Definition • Physical Spaces – Orchid Farm, Government Office, and etc.

• Virtual Spaces – Web, Social Media, and other digital spaces.

• Digital Technology and communication – Facebook technology

• Knowledge Cluster – Group of connecting people to share and learn.

Research Question • What is critical knowledge they share and learn? – Critical knowledge is the one that is right, useful, and timely.

• What are factors affecting competitive capability in knowledge cluster?

Research Objective To develop Knowledge Cluster Model • This model will be used as a tool for developing competitive capability for Orchid Cluster. • This model is expected to apply in other similar scenario and environment.

Research Methodology Ethnographic research (+ Quantitative) • Researcher is active role play and stay in the field of study. Data collection tools. • Observations • In-depth interviews • Documentation review

Research Subject Orchid Cluster Ratchaburi Group • High Potential Cluster in Cluster development process • The cluster was established 10 years ago in a bid to increase production quality for export markets. • Comprising 11 farms with a combined plantation area of 340 rai, it exports 10 million Baht worth of orchids each year.

Research Experiences Active Role • Cluster consultant on Management Cluster Activities and Socialization • Meeting • Marriage ceremony • Funeral ceremony • Hospital visit • Farm visit • World orchid conference • Orchid contest • Orchid classroom • Orchid training • Orchid lab • Field trip • And etc.

Research Time • Two years

Virtual Spaces Creation Using digital technologies and communication • Facebook technology – Account, Group, Page

• From Country level to global level – Local group – National group – Global group

• Training and Socializing

Orchid Global Network

Orchid Global Network

Orchid Global Network

Physical Spaces Using digital technologies and communication • Facebook technology – Account, Group, Page

• From Country level to global level – Local group – National group – Global group

Results • Interest – Group members show more interest on content

• Growth – Group member number grow continually

• Reaction – Group member response to other member i.e. post, like, share, and comment

Findings • No learning without practicing – Critical Tacit Knowledge comes from the field work

• No sharing without trust – 40:40:20

• No chatting without friendship – Fun and Joy approach

• Magic number of 10 – Group stay in touch and sustain longer if the number of member is 10 (+/-)

Findings • Micro-Macro Knowledge Cluster by Prof. Rapee Sagarig and Thai Layman exists long before Porter’ s Cluster Concept initiate in Thailand (2002) Porter’s Cluster Concept “Love to have on Mankind” Orchid

Eastern Cluster Concept Gen 1 (1965)

Gen 2 (1970)

Gen 3 (2002) Gen 4 (2010)

Orchid Cluster Ratchaburi Group

Findings • Physical spaces – Learning Most by Looking, Listening and Practicing – Not Classroom or Textbook

• Virtual spaces – Learning Most by Looking not Reading – Computer Literacy is stills main obstacle.

Proposed Knowledge Cluster Development Model: • East meet West Context – Porter’s Diamond Model and King’s Bhumibol ‘s Philosophy of Sufficient Economy

• Triple Diamonds: – Physical Factors (Business contexts, Factor conditions, Demand conditions, Related Industries) – Human Factors (Love, Friendship, Trust) – Environmental Factors (Physical Geography, Weather atmosphere, Geo-social)

• Blended Social Media Technology driven – Facebook Concept (Free, Post, Like, Share, Comment)
