Building the structures and systems to support healthcare provision I’m delighted to introduce this latest issue of NHS Matters. In these pages you can learn about the work currently underway to ensure we have a strong set of governance structures within the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) and indeed the entire health system in Qatar. Transparency and accountability are key characteristics which we must endeavor to instil within our systems and the transition from Supreme Council of Health to MoPH has given us the opportunity to review and evolve the Ministry's governance. The resulting structures are robust and designed to ensure delivery of the Ministry's key objectives. New mental health legislation was approved in mid June. This will result in improved care and appropriate treatment of patients in fully licensed and monitored facilities. By recognizing the rights of patients with psychiatric conditions we will also be able to assist and support their families in the wider community. The health of the whole community is similarly at the center of an updated draft law on the control of tobacco and its derivatives. Qatar’s public health system took a significant step forward at the beginning of May when the first patient was cared for at Sidra Medical and Research Center. Sidra is a vital element of our overall plan for the health system. New facilities have also

been opened recently, and more will be opened over the next few months, across PHCC and HMC. More patients will be able to access the best possible care, with the most up to date facilities, in the best healthcare settings to meet their needs.

Transparency and accountability are key characteristics which we must endeavor to instil within our systems and the transition from Supreme Council of Health to MoPH has given us the opportunity to review and evolve the Ministry's governance.” Please take the time to read through the informative articles in this issue which offer a valuable insight into recent health events and priorities as we continue to develop the health system in Qatar. Her Excellency Dr. Hanan Mohamed Al-Kuwari Minister of Public Health
