1. Introduction The Capacitive Proximity Sensor Module is used to detect metal as well as nonmetallic materials such as solids, liquids, plastic, glass, wood and paper. But it is more suitable to be used for detecting the nonmetallic targets. The ability of the sensor to detect the target is determined by the target’s size, dielectric constant and distance from the sensor. The bigger number of dielectric constant, the material will be easier to be detected. The larger the target’s size and the shorter the distance between target and probe, the capacitive coupling will be stronger. The corresponding light indicator will ON when the target is being detected. This sensor consists of knob adjustor which is used to vary its sensitivity of detection materials. Specifications:  Input Voltage : DC 6V to 30V  Output : o Digital (0 or 1 digit)  Output Signal : NPN (Active low)  Sensitivity : Adjustable  LED indicator : Red color

Sensitivity Adjustor  Clockwise for increasing material detecting sensitivity.  Anticlockwise for reducing material detecting sensitivity.

Wire

Description

Function

Brown (VCC)

6V~30V

Connect to +6V ~ 30V power supply (Internal testing, it is also compatible with 5V)

Blue (GND)

Ground

Connect to Ground  

Black (Output)

Digital Output (NPN Signal)

Active Low, it is able to connect to the load such as relay, lamp, input microcontroller, input PLC, and etc. The voltage of output signal depends on VCC voltage.

Example: o VCC: 6V  Output: 6V o VCC: 32V  Output: 32V

3. Sample Hardware Installation and Sample Source Code Diagram below shows the hardware connection between Capacitive Proximity Sensor Module and microcontroller. For the power supply that is 6V and above, before connecting the Capacitive Proximity Sensor’s output to the microcontroller, remember to put voltage divider (see below diagram) in order to regulate the voltage to 5V which is suitable voltage for majority microcontroller such as Arduino, PIC and etc. Otherwise, it may cause damage on microcontroller due to the high voltage.

Diagram below shows the hardware connection between Capacitive Proximity Sensor Module and Arduino UNO. In this example, the 5V is used to activate the sensor so the voltage divider is not need to be connected.

To obtain the result, please get the sample source code and burn it into Arduino. After that, open the “Serial Monitor” to see the result.

4. Result The example is done between a thick exercise book and a thin white card. The sensor is unable to detect the thin white card, because its capacitive coupling is too weak to be detected by the sensor. The LED is OFF.

Next, the thick solid item (exercise book) is used. The sensor is able to detect the item (exercise book) due to its capacitive coupling is strong enough for sensor. The LED is turned ON. Therefore, the size of chosen item should be considered as it will affect the sensitivity of sensor. The solid or thick item is preferred for this sensor.
