CAREERS NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2018 WELCOME BACK TO THE NEW SPRING TERM! The latest issue of Moving On magazine is out now! This issue brings together the worlds of science and creativity to cover careers in art and design, media and film, science, and IT. With interviews with people working in illustration, Foley artistry and stunt performing, there is plenty to inspire young readers. There are features on STEM-related careers in food technology, pharmacology and software engineering, and information on becoming a teacher of STEM. Those who love writing can read about how to become a writer, editorial assistant or content manager. To access your free digital copy of the magazine, visit: http://movingonmagazine. co.uk.

EXPLORE WITH THE EXPERTS Our new ‘Explore with the Experts’ workshops have created a real buzz in school. Running monthly during lunchtimes, they provide an opportunity for students to meet our carefully selected guests, ask questions in a relaxed and informal setting, and explore a wide range of job roles and career possibilities (including different pathways, e.g. apprenticeships, and, for older girls, potential work experience leads). So far we have given a warm Kingsley welcome to solicitors, entrepreneurs, engineers, gaming experts, a flight service manager, an events manager, a speech and language therapist, a business manager in the construction industry, and a lawyer - phew! Already booked in for this year are a probation officer, a head of HR, a surveyor, a graduate working for National Grid, representatives from the Police, Army, RAF, a variety of medical employees and a textiles artist. Spring term dates are 25th Jan, 15th Feb and 29th Mar . The sessions will run from 12.45pm to 1.45pm in the Learning Resource Centre (LRC). More information will be sent to the girls nearer each session.

WORK EXPERIENCE In October, Year 10 students were given the opportunity to experience the world of work for a week. The girls’ placement choices were incredibly varied and covered a wide range of industries, including engineering, archaeology, HR, veterinary, radio, education and graphic design. Lily C, who completed a placement at Cygnus HR, gained first-hand experience of employment tribunals by sitting in on a real case. Lily W thoroughly enjoyed her time at Avonvale Veterinary Practice and received some excellent feedback, with one of the vets commenting, “It’s very rewarding to have such a lovely person for placement.” Lucy, who chose to experience life in a bakery (spending around half of her placement baking and the other half serving customers), made such a great impression that she was offered a parttime job at the end of the week! The girls returned to school full of enthusiasm and eager to share their experiences with fellow students and staff.

The Aspire Conference, 3rd March in Birmingham A great way for Year 9-13 students to find out more about the various career paths into law from legal professionals and educators. This is a free event. National Careers Week (NCW), 5th-9th March Lots of exciting careers-related activities will be taking place in school (thanks to the parents and girls who attended the ‘People Like Me’ workshop for contributing to these plans!). Following the success of last year’s #mydaughtersfuture evening, run in conjunction with the University of Warwick’s Institute of Employment Research, the subject of this year’s talk will be ‘Pathways Post-18’. Taking place on Wednesday 7th March at 7pm, it will cover degree level apprenticeships and sponsored degree programmes. With university fees costing around £9k per annum, we are sure you will want to save the date and discover how your daughter can get a degree without the debt! The Big Bang Science Fair, Saturday 17th March at the NEC This is a fantastic (free!) event for any children and families who are interested in exploring careers that STEM (excuse the pun!) from studying Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. The number of women working in these traditionally male-dominated sectors is increasing (could this be because demand far outweighs supply or as a result of the great salaries on offer?). Predictions are that, within the next 10 years, 70% of all job roles will be STEMrelated. This labour market information forms a vital part of our careers education programme here in school. The fair is aimed at 7-19 year olds and free tickets can be booked here: http://www.thebigbangfair.co.uk/.
