A Traffic Free Bike Ride

extend into nearby towns. There is also the rail trail from Jaffrey into Rindge. Close to my home in Peterborough is another rail trail that goes north from the center of town through part of Hancock and into Bennington, which I often ride, most recently on a lovely August day. In mid-morning, I loaded my old single speed Bianchi hybrid with its medium width tires onto my car and drove over to the trail head on Summer Street. It’s a popular starting place for walkers and riders, but there was only one car there when I arrived. A few minutes later I was pedaling north along the Contoocook River. After a few yards through the woods, the trail briefly follows the shoulder of Summer Street, with the river very close on the other side. Then it goes into the woods, moves away from the river and, about a mile from the start, crosses Hunt Road and follows Tarbell Road for maybe a quarter of a mile before entering the woods for a very nice stretch that passes a town water building, goes by a pretty pond, crosses one road leading to some condos, and then goes back into the woods. Soon after, I was pedaling by the school bus parking area on Route 202, the Hancock Road, with the

sometimes (but not often) busy highway on my right. I was headed for the section of the trail that passes the entrance to the town recycling center, but I didn’t have to cross the highway to get there because a nifty tunnel takes the trail under the road. The next section of the trail is perhaps the loveliest. The tree lined Contoocook is close by on one side and deep woods on the other. After another mile or so, I left Peterborough and entered Hancock. Soon after, I crossed Cavender Road, which is unpaved at that point. I briefly left the trail to pedal east a few yards to the foot bridge which crosses the river, always a good spot to rest and enjoy the view over the water. Then it was back to the trail and pedaling north. I passed the bridge over Ferguson Brook where it enters the Contoocook and then came to a section where some recent logging had resulted in a number of downed trees. I was a bit surprised by that, but kept riding and was soon back in the woods. I stopped where a small stream leaves a pond on the left, goes under a small bridge left over from railroad days and enters the river where it has begun to broaden into the pond just below the covered bridge on Forest Road. It’s a great place for a rest with a good view. A few minutes later, I rode the rest of the way to Forest Road and pedaled east to the bridge, which marks the border between Hancock and Greenfield. I saw only a single car on my short ride on the highway. It was about eight miles to the covered bridge. Then I turned around and rode back along the Contoocook into Peterborough. It was, as usual, a fine and relaxing ride.

Under 202 One problem, or even a hazard, for cyclists is the motorized traffic, certainly on city streets and busy highways, but even on small town roads. One has to be ever mindful of the cars and trucks passing by only a few feet away. Mountain bike trails don’t have the problem, but many of them are also on the steep and rugged side, which is fine with many riders. There are, however, some great trails in the Monadnock Region – most of them rail trails – that offer easy riding in lovely surroundings with no cars or trucks. Keene has several of these trails, some of which
