CLOUD-BASED MULTIPHASE FLOW SIMULATION OF A BIOREACTOR PROJECT: CLOUDFLOW

23rd and 24th of June – Amsterdam

USE-CASE: BIOREACTOR  Bioreactor is a device, which supports a biologically active environment  It is used for the production of different organisms, which are used in pharmaceutical, chemical and food industries  Pharma companies: Bayer, Pfizer, etc.  Food & drink manufactures: Nestle, Paulaner Brewery, etc.  Manufacturer of the bioreactors are equipment manufacturer: ZETA, VTU, VogelBusch Biopharma, Eppendorf etc.

ACTUAL PROBLEM AND WHY CAN CLOUD COMPUTING HELP?  What is the problem and for whom?  Long calculation time (about a week - caused by the need to run transient simulations up to 20 seconds) without a highly optimized workflow and huge computational resources  Industry requires a calculation time not longer than one week  These computational resources are often not affordable for SME  Why simulation?  Product improvement (e.g. higher cell density, number of viable cells etc.)  Process understanding (e.g. scale up, new impeller design or number of impellers etc.)  Improvement of process criteria (kLa, shear rate, homogenization etc.)  Why Cloud computing for a bioreactor simulation?  Peak demands can be covered

 Huge number of CPUs are available on demand  Possibility to perform DoE analysis (e.g. up to 25 parallel variants)  Full cost control  Already developed and proven workflow I4MS 2016: FOSTERING DIGITAL INDUSTRIAL INNOVATION IN EUROPE · 23rd and 24th of June · Amsterdam

WEB BROWSER AND CLOUDFLOW PORTAL

 Solution  Access to computational resources via Cloud - thus full cost control, shorter calculation time and affordable for SME  Highly optimized workflow for this kind of application I4MS 2016: FOSTERING DIGITAL INDUSTRIAL INNOVATION IN EUROPE · 23rd and 24th of June · Amsterdam

3D RESULTS POSTPROCESSING IN CLOUD  2D and 3D data post-processing in Cloud  Full integrated 2D/3D postprocessing application in Cloud  No data transfer through network  Simulation and residuals monitoring

ECONOMIC IMPACT AND BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES  Cost saving

 In house costs  45.000€ (12-16CPUs + License for a year)

120000

 Utilization: about 80% per year

Cloud costs

100000

 Cloud costs: 1,2 [€ / CPU h]

 Variant simulation (e.g. DoE) is not direct comparable with inhouse calculation, due to very high investment costs (e.g. 25*45.000€, practically not possible for SMEs)

ECONOMIC IMPACT AND BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES  Time saving

 Actual impact for SES-Tec  In the next three years SES-Tec is planning to increase the actual turnover by 15% of the actual turnover only due to Cloud computing. SES-Tec  We will contact potential customers (e.g. Vision Pharma (2016) and CPHI (2016)) and increase the market in the are of pharma and bio technology  Furthermore, SES-Tec is planning to hire a new employee, which deals exclusively with cloud computation. CONCLUSION AND FURTHER PLANS  Cloud computing advantages  No investment and service costs  Available 24/7

 Benefits from CloudFlow project  Cloud computing knowledge and integration of a workflow  Results of a DoE analysis in Cloud  Experience and basis knowledge for other applications and integrations  New services offer new application areas and new job positions

 How I4MS helped SES-Tec  With the help of I4MS it was possible to create a new tested application – in order to keep up also as an SME  Provided a large network  A SME is forced to economize differently as a large enterprise and therefore it is pretty tough to develop a cloud-based platform for a CFD simulation during the daily work

 Dissemination and exploitation activities  Contact with potential customers  Usability test with SES-Tec customers (live demonstrations for potential new applications)
