In order to achieve week goals as above mentioned, Castila offers other programs for reinforcement, practice and reviewing when the studentand the teaching staff considers that it‘s appropriate according to the student’s needs. Castila also propose objective test at the end of every level, so that we can evaluate the process and guarantee the perfect timing.

**

In order to improve and achieve the C.2 level (mastery) goals, Castila proposes courses based on specific topics such as courses applied toprofessional purposes (medicine, law, diplomacy, commerce, business, teaching...), Spanish and Latin American literature and culture or othercourses whose objective is communicating in Spanish like a native or developing a professional career in a Spanishspeaking country.

CEFR: Common European Framework of Reference, proposed by the Counsel of Europe that was established as a standard description of language levels.

DELE: Diplomas of Spanish issued by the Ministry of Education. The Cervantes Institute administers the 6 levels proposed by the CEFR languages.

Welcome

With this folder we present to you Castila, our educational centre founded in 1988.

We are thrilled with the idea that you may come to do a course with us and that you confide in us a part of your linguistic education and cultural immersion. We would love to have the opportunity to teach you, along with Spanish, everything about Castila and its city, Granada, both an excellent example of Spanish life and culture. During these last few years we have worked to adapt our curriculum to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). We have distributed the 6 different levels of the CEFR into 24 modular one-week programs, and we program another 6 when necessary. These programs are complemented with a dozen other courses dedicated to specific areas including professional, cultural, social and academic subjects. We intend these programs to be a response to the specific needs of our students. We also intend to respond the common questions: “How much time do I need to learn Spanish?”, “How much will I improve during the weeks I spend in Castila?”, “What is my current level of Spanish and how much time will I need to study to be able to take the DELE B1 or C2 exam?”, or most importantly, “What should I study to be able to go to a university, live or work in a Spanish-speaking country?”. We have often heard our students say that “Castila is the best school to study Spanish,” to which we always respond: “but not as good as it will be next year.” Thank you for placing your confidence in us. Antonio Perales Castro, Founder of Castila

The School and Granada

GRANADA is situated between the mountains and the sea, half an hour from the ski station and the Sierra Nevada National Park, and half an hour from the Tropical Coast, a lush valley filled with avocados, mangos, papaya, chirimoyos, and the warm waters of the Mediterranean. Granada is the city of the Alhambra and the Generalife, the most visited monument in Spain. Granada is also home to the Albaicin, one of the most unique neighborhoods in theworld. But Granada represents much more, it is a city; the city itself makes up a population of 600,000 people. Of these, 60,000 are university students which make Granada a cosmopolitan *Location in the City: In the center of the Albaicin neighborhood, in a street closed to city and an academic and cultural traffic for pedestrian use only *Views: From the second floor classrooms, one can contemplate the Alhambra, reference in Spain. The city consists of Generalife, Sierra Nevada, and the white carmens of the Albaicin. From the lower many dualities: the harmony between floors, there are views of the school's garden and other nearby carmens. tradition and forward-thinking, of *Classrooms: 7 rooms are complete with Internet access and audiovisual equipment *Library: There is a complimentary lending service for students with free use of all the going out to party and tapas, of the school's books, videos, and discs. Castila also has a collaboration agreement with the mountains and the beach, of the sun and Municipal Library of the Albaicin (only 5 minutes walking from the school). *Other Services Available for Students: Wifi, Internet, a cantina/ bar, and in the snow, of Falla and Lorca, of frivolous summer, a swimming pool in a nearby residence. pleasures and transcendental thinking, *School Access: From Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 22:00 of street life and inspiring light.

The ALBAICÍN: Apart from its significant history, perhaps the most valuable aspect of the Albaicin is that it maintains its customs, the traditional atmosphere and the beauty of its Carmens, aromas of jasmine and wisteria, narrow streets, cypresses, plazas and overlooks with spectacular views of the Alhambra and the Sierra Nevada along with bustling markets full of color and kind people…. The Albiaicin offers the privilege of being able to enjoy the advantages of a small town in the center of a big city. It is common to hear among visitors and residents that the Albaicin is both an exceptional and charming neighborhood, a 21st century luxury. The writer from Cordoba, Antonio Gala, stated once that it was just as beautiful to look at the Albaicin from the Alhambra as it was to look at the Alhambra from the Albaicin. In this way, the two sites joined together; in 1995 UNESCO added the popular neighborhood to the “Patriarchy of Humanity of the Alhambra, Generalife.” And since 1988, Castila has resided in the heart of the Albaicin with its beautiful views of the city, the Alhambra, and the Sierra Nevada. THE SCHOOL AND ITS INSTALLATIONS Since 1988, Castila has been in the Albaicin, in the “Carmen de los Gatos” or “Carmen of the Cats.” It exists as a sample of commitment to the Spanish culture in its setting for offering the combination of language, culture, and the Spanish customs. The “Carmen of the Cats” is a free-standing house with a garden, orange trees, fig trees, loquat trees, and views of the Alhambra, Generalife, and the Sierra Nevada. UNESCO World Heritage Site: The Alhambra, Generalife and Albaizín neighbourhood of Granada. “The residential district of the Albaizín is a rich repository of Moorish vernacular architecture, into which the traditional Andalusian architecture blends harmoniously.” Source: UNESCO: http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/314 Other languages: French, English, Arabic, Chinese, RussianCarmens: Scholars relate the etymology of the word Carmen with songs and Latin poems. “Carmen” is also a feminine name that was given to the protagonist in the “Opera of Bizet. “ It is an interesting coincidence that this is also the name given to typical Granada houses. A Carmen (from the Arabic word “Al karm” meaning vineyard or vegetable garden) is a free-standing home in Granada with a garden, fruit trees, which made an earthly paradise for the Arabs of Al-Andalus. Granada is known as the city of Carmens.

Methodology and Professors “I ordered a coffee, and do you know what they gave me?” A middle-aged English student explained to his professor because he had decided to continue learning Spanish. He told the story that when he began to learn Spanish, he took a trip to Spain by car. “During the journey I made a stop in a bar along the motorway and ordered a coffee with cream. Do you know what they gave me? “ “Well, no, what did they give you?” the professor asked expecting to hear a humorous misunderstanding or error. “Well, they gave me ….. a coffee with cream.” The anecdote was told by a student to his professor, Jose Antonio (IC London), and it seems to demonstrate clearly that what excited this student was that language is a tool to obtain objectives and … in his case, enjoy coffee with cream. Now, this student wanted more tools so that he could obtain more objectives with language.

At Castila, we are convinced that language is the most effective and important of the social abilities, and that learning a language is like gaining a dictionary of communicative capacities, a conglomeration of precision and style in the function of personal necessity. In order to determine the level and analyze the necessities of each person, all of the students of Castila have a personal interview with a professor and must take a written and oral level test. According to the results of the test and the number of weeks of class each student wants to take, the coordinators propose a plan of the objectives and contents of the course. We believe that a person that learns a language always has a clear vision of the path he or she wants to take. The classes are interactive and all the necessary teaching elements are present (grammar, the teachers, didactic materials: books, videos, audio) and the activities in the class have the objective of the continual participation of the student, that he or she listens, reads, writes, and speaks Spanish from the very beginning and very first day. Furthermore, we believe that language is a culture, and in this way, it is a way of life. After class, the student has the opportunity to continue practicing and the family, with friends, the day to day everyday life (shopping, visiting, enjoying the culture with Spanish people, expositions, bars, In the selection of the professors at cinema, TV, homework, etc…) and in the Castila, the requirements are: 54 different after-school activities that -university licensure (5 year minimum university study) Castila offers with its professors. The Professors All of the professors are native Spanish speakers with two basic requirements: the highest university title and specific training in the teaching of secondary languages. The professors, without doubt, are the most valuable part of Castila. In questionnaires and comments, students emphasize their (the professors') enthusiasm, competence, closeness, availability, commitment, and overall, their huge help in learning, understanding, and enjoying the different aspects of the language. Many teachers have been with Castila for more than 10 years. It is certainly tested and proven that experience and enthusiasm work together in perfect combination with our professors.

-post-graduate work: in pedagogy aptitudes -Castila Training Course: theory revision and practice of all the didactic aspects, methodology, and styles of teaching and learning, and familiarization with the school and staff itself -Empathy and interest in cultural interchange are also qualities that are stressed in all of our professors. -In order to improve the quality of education offered, the professors of Castila participate in continuing training and education programs, with a minimum of 30 hours completed per year.

Activities

“Castila, one hundred and one opportunities to practice language and enjoy the culture and customs of the Spanish”. The activities are a fundamental part of the teaching-learning process that composes the academic team of Castila. All of our efforts are concentrated on efficiently combining classes, practice, and cultural experience. Our intent is to obtain compatible goals: to continue practicing Spanish outside of class and at the same time to learn and enjoy the geography, the culture, and the customs that sustain Spanish. -ceramic making

An old publication from Castila in 1992 said: “We accept that we like our life, we enjoy the winter with one or two days of skiing per week, sailing in the spring, riding horses, playing tennis and swimming, a thrilling football game, a trip to Cazorla, another to Morocco, to be able to make out the view of the sea from the desert, to bathe and swim in Cantarrijan, to be dazzled by flamenco at parties, to see the Alhambra from San Nicholas Overlook, to eat with so many people in so many places…. to speak Spanish; and the continued option of Spanish movies every Tuesday at 6pm, songs that the students learn by heart, thematic afternoons about wine, bullfighting, Spanish cinema, colloquialisms, and conferences, Holy Week, the “Corpus,” the Crosses and so many activities for the seductive spring, the sunny winter, the unforgettable autumn with brilliant colors, and the warm, delicious, and exciting summers...”

“A hundred and one opportunities to speak Spanish”... is something our students often say

As a part of the programs offered by Castila, Granada also offers its own activities as a cosmopolitan university city: libraries, museums, archives, art galleries, cinema clubs, theatre, cinema, concerts, expositions, sports installations, etc… and an evening and nightlife where boredom doesn’t exist. Popular town and neighborhood festivals are endless demonstrations of folklore and tradition. Various festivals and events are unique to exclusive stages such as the Alhambra itself for their sheer renown and importance: the International Festival of Theatre in May, the International Jazz Festival in November and the International Festival of Music and Dance in June and July. On the weekends, Castila offers excursions to various points of geographical interest, including places as far away as Morocco and Portugal. The most frequently visited excursion options are to the Sierra Nevada, Alpujarra, the Tropical Coast, Ronda, Ubeda and Baeza, Cordoba, Antequera, Guadix, and the troglodyte towns. Castila always is attentive to the profiles and preferences of its students.
