General Course Information: Prerequisites: Trigonometry and Analytical Geometry

Course Description: This is a college-level course in calculus based on the Advanced Placement Program of the College Entrance Examination Board. It includes a study of function limits, continuity, derivatives, and integrals through numerical, graphical, analytical/algebraic, and verbal/written analyses. Students are required to take the College Board AP Calculus AB exam on Wednesday, May 8th, 2013, and attend mandatory study sessions (dates and times to be announced). Course Goals: By successfully completing this course, students will be able to: • Work with functions represented in a variety of ways and understand the connections among these representations. • Understand the meaning of the derivative in terms of a rate of change, and local linear approximation, and use derivatives to solve a variety of problems. • Understand the relationship between the derivative and the definite integral. • Communicate mathematics both orally and in well-written sentences to explain solutions to problems. • Model a written description of a physical situation with a function, a differential equation, or an integral. • Use technology to help solve problems, experiment, interpret results, and verify conclusions. • Determine the reasonableness of solutions, including sign, size, relative accuracy, and units of measurement. • Develop an appreciation of calculus as a coherent body of knowledge and as a human accomplishment. Leilehua High School Credit Information: Year course (1 credit) College Board AP Calculus Exam: May 8th, 2013 at 8:00AM; $87 exam fee; scores range from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest).

Description Chapter exams will be administered after the completion of each chapter to assess students’ progress. Performance Assessment Tasks (PAT) will be administered periodically throughout each quarter. PATs will contain problems that are more difficult than previous assignments, quizzes and exams as they come from actual AP Calculus exams. Students will be given daily mini quizzes, and periodic section quizzes on to test students’ understanding and application of previously learned topics. Quizzes can be unannounced or will be announced about one week before they are administered. A comprehensive exam and/or Unit by Design (UbD) project will be administered at the end of each quarter that will cover content learned throughout the quarter. Classwork and homework assignments will be given daily to practice lessons just learned. Classwork is due at the end of the same class period, and homework is due at the beginning of the next class period. Only assignments with WORK SHOWN and written only in PENCIL will be credited. NO LATE WORK ACCEPTED!!! However, students are encouraged to finish any missing homework and show it to the instructor ASAP. Periodically, I may be checking notebooks for organization of handouts, notes, classwork, and homework assignments. Notebook Guidelines:

Your notebook should include: 1. Class notes 2. Classwork and homework with DATES and PAGES/SECTION numbers

Note: A variety of factors are considered when determining a student’s grade, not only the items noted above. The student’s attendance, attitude, behavior, participation, and preparedness can affect their grade. The student can earn extra points for exceptional work, or lose points for unsatisfactory effort. The number of points added or subtracted varies according to the situation at the discretion of the teacher and student.

Grading Scale: The following grading scale will be used to determine quarter and semester grades: A (90% - above)

B (80% - 89.99%)

C (70% - 79.99%)

D (60% - 69.99%)

F (Below 59.99%)

CAUTION: An “F” at the end of the year means NO CREDIT!!! Parents, please proactively monitor your child’s grade to ensure your child’s success in Algebra I (honors). Grades are posted/updated online at http://www.edline.net/pages/Leilehua_High_School. Announcements, forms, class notes, assignments, and quiz and exam reviews can be found at my website, http://leilehuacalculus.weebly.com/. Feel free to contact me to inquire on your child’s progress (see the first page for contact information). I am most accessible via e-mail.

Attendance/Tardy Policy:

Students are expected to attend class on a regular basis. However, should a student be tardy or absent, he/she is responsible for any material that was covered during their absence and/or tardy. What if the student has an UNEXCUSED tardy? The student must serve in-class detention immediately after the class period. If the student does not perform his/her service, the student will not receive credit for any assignments, quizzes, and exams during that class period. The student is also responsible for any material that was missed during his/her tardiness. What if the student has an EXCUSED TARDY (a tardy authorized by the LHS administration)? The student must make up any missed work (notes, quizzes, exams, etc.) within the day, during the class period, recess, lunch, or after school.

What if the student has an UNEXCUSED ABSENCE? The student will not receive credit for any missed assignments, quizzes, and exams. However, the student is still responsible for any material that is covered. What if the student has an EXCUSED ABSENCE (an absence authorized by the LHS administration)? The student has two class periods (from the day he/she returns to class) to make-up all assignments, quizzes, or exams missed. Please be aware that credit for any missed work will only be given if the absence is authorized by the LHS administration. Please take the following steps to ensure that the student adheres to the make-up work policy: 1. Parent/Guardian e-mails/contacts instructor (you may include the reason for absence, and/or dates of child’s absence). 2. Student meets with instructor upon returning to school to receive missing work. 3. Student submits missed work within two class periods of returning to class. 4. Student submits approved “LHS Attendance Verification Form” to Instructor.

General Class Rules, Policies, and Course Expectations and Consequences: General Class Rules: BE RESPECTFUL TO YOUR: • Teacher and Faculty • Classmates • School

BE RESPONSIBLE FOR: • Your Success • Your Education • Your Choices and Actions

Class Policies: 1. Lectures/Lessons: Students will not be permitted to talk or walk around during direct instruction, unless acknowledged by the instructor—in which the student must raise their hand and wait to be called upon. 2. Lining Up at the Door: Students must stay in their seats until dismissed, not when the bell rings. Leaving class before dismissed will result in a zero for the day. 3. Tests/Quizzes: Students are not allowed to talk during tests and quizzes. If the student has any questions or concerns he/she must raise their hand wait for the instructor. Any unauthorized talking and/or cheating will result in a zero! 4. Food/Beverages: Students are allowed to eat snacks, and drink water (no meals or gum chewing allowed). All trash must be discarded in the trash can outside of the class. Each student will be assigned to monitor any rubbish and tidy the room before leaving. If the classroom is left untidy, this privilege will be taken away. 5. Cellular phones/Music Players/Unauthorized Electronic Devices: These are contraband items in school. These items must be turned off and put away during class. If the student is caught using a contraband device in class, he/she will receive a verbal warning. If the student is caught again, the instructor will confiscate the item, and call the student’s parent/guardian. The student will be allowed to pick retrieve their device at the end of the school day. Expectations: 1. Being present and punctual to class. Since much of this course utilizes information presented in earlier units, attendance is very important. Each student should be in his or her seat at the sound of the bell, ready to work. 2. Being prepared to work and participate in class discussions and activities. 3. Have a positive attitude in the learning environment. 4. Being accountable for all learning, work and behavior. (You are expected to keep up with your work and notes. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to obtain class notes and assignments and turn them in by the specified due date) 5. Be attentive. Listen to instructions the first time they are given. 6. Being honest and fair at all times. No cheating and/or copying will be tolerated. All parties involved in cheating will receive and automatic “F” on the assignment. 7. Required materials must be brought to class daily. 8. Problems must be written out neatly and legibly, all work shown, answers circled in order for students to receive full credit for their work. If I can’t read your handwriting, your assignment will not be graded. 9. Student agendas are required in class daily and will be part of your daily grade. You are required to record your daily assignments for the appropriate date each day you are in class. 10. School discipline policy is always in effect. Consequences: 1. Unacceptable behavior will result in in-class service (detention), teacher-student conference, parent notification, classroom detention, teacher-parent-student conference, or referral depending on the severity and amount of occurrences.
