The Snail’s Pace Crew accepting the 50 Best Running Stores in America award in Austin, Texas The 50 Best Running Stores in America for 2015 By Competitor.com, Published Nov. 24, 2015, Updated Nov. 25, 2015 at 11:27 AM UTC A great running store is the cornerstone of a healthy running community. It not only provides the latest knowledge on shoes and gear, but also fosters a passion for the sport by building a thriving community around it.
. Only through exemplary customer service, insightful industry knowledge and well-organized provisions of run programs and events can a store be considered one of the best—especially in an era dominated by online shopping. A great store is so much more than just a place to buy gear. Hence, every year Competitor magazine partners with Running Insight trade magazine to celebrate and identify these qualities in the 50 best running stores across the nation. The process begins with readers nominating their favorite shops on Competitor.com, followed by diligent evaluations executed by undercover shoppers.

Krystal Martinez – A Snail’s Pace Brea, Senior Sales Associate Where are you from originally and when did you move to So Cal? Hacienda Heights, CA, and I’ve lived here my whole life. What got you started on running, when, where, etc.? My elementary school had cross country so I started running competitively in first grade at the age of 5 and never stopped. What has been your favorite race and why? My favorite race is the Baldwin Park 5k because I actually use to run that one in elementary school. So I have lots of memories from that course. What is the coolest place you have gone for a run? The coolest place has to be up in Truckee, which is about fifteen minutes from Lake Tahoe. What are you training for now and how is it going? I’m training for the Brea 8k, and training is going well. Do you have any races that interest you? I would love to run the OC Half, but 13.1 miles at race pace is what keeps me hesitant. What are your current running goals? My goal is to train enough to be confident enough to actually run a half marathon. What is your best running tip? My best running tip is to NEVER underestimate your body, it’s what you have to count on, and it can do so much more than you think. Why do you run? I run because it’s my escape from the world, and my time to connect with myself and clear my mind. Any other hobbies or interests? If Netflix counts as a hobby, then yes! I also like to read and write. What do you like most about working at A Snail’s Pace? The atmosphere and our customers. I get to talk about the sport I love, and help others get started.

Brea Chapter News
Watch for Runners Back in 2014, I fe lt like I had re ache d a de ad e nd in my running. It came shortly afte r the LAMarathon. My time was much slowe r than e xpe cte d. It was hotte r than usual. I was tire d. And I got hit by a bike . Now grante d, the bike didn’t actually knock me OVER. But it re affirme d tha t pe rhaps this was not, pe rhaps, my day, running wise . I made it to the e nd as was gre e te d by frie nds with a chorus of “You finishe d! That’s the most important thing!” And although the y me ant we ll, as any runne r knows, it’s a bit patronizing to he ar those words for a race for which you traine d for months, no ma tte r wha t good inte ntions lie be hind the m. In April of 2014 I de cide d to join the Snails on a whim. I was looking for a group in which I could both run and me e t pe ople . Whe n I he ard about the Pub Run the adde d ince ntive of be e r se ale d the de al. Be ing part of the Snails he lpe d to re affirm the aspe cts of running tha t I always love dthe camarade rie . Admit it or not, we runne rs are a bit mad. We arise on Saturdays whe n othe rs are still asle e p in the ir comfy, comfy be ds to le g out long runs. We he ar how carbs contribute to we ight gain and the n de cide to load up on spaghe tti dinne rs to avoid hitting the dre ade d “wall”. We push ourse lve s to the point of e xhaustion only to arise the ne xt day and do it again. And ye t, with your fe llow runne rs, it’s the be st kind of madne ss. The kind of madne ss tha t turns walke rs into marathone rs, training runs into compe titions, and strange rs into frie nds. Right now I’m dre ading going up to Sacrame nto and having to run e ighte e n mile s by myse lf on Christmas Eve morning. I’ll do it, be cause my pe rvasive se nse of runne r’sguilt will make me . And the re ’s a good chance tha t I’ll e njoy it, e spe cially with Spotify streaming into my e ars and the dulce t tone s of Nick Offe rman re ading about his list of gre a t Ame ricans in his ne we st book. But will I e njoy it as much as running while Kelly Hertzig is ne xt to me with he r she e r sense of efferve scence tha t se e ms e ntire ly unnatural for a Saturday morning be fore the sun has e ve n come up? Or running while de bating which bacon, British or Ame rican, wins in pure tastine ss with Running Duche ss from Wale s- Cathe rine Pe arson (for the record, it’s USA all the way baby)? Or while que stioning Jimmy Andres’s logic of running 26.2 mile s downhill, which still, as I type it, se e ms like a bad ide a, e ve n a month and a half afte r the fact? No. Of course not.
I come back for the pe ople - the mid-we e k conve rsations, th e Saturday camarade rie , and, of course , a be e r or two a t the be e r garde n on Thursday. I’m proud to have contribute d to the club as your Ne wsle tte r Editor in 2015, and I’m e xcite d to se e wha t the coming ye ar has in store . If you have any comme nts or sugge stions ple ase don’t he sita te to le t me or my fe llow office rs know wha t we can do to make the club e ve n be tte r. Have a gre a t Holiday Se ason, and here ’s to a gre a t 2016! Brad Vargyas will be the president of the Brea chapter of the Snail’s Pace Running Club in 2016. He’sproud to report that he was hit by exactly zero bicycles in 2015.
