Sansom named to Superior Planning & Zoning Commission Sonnie Sansom took the Oath of Office for the Planning and Zoning Commission on Thurs., Nov. 14. Sansom was appointed by the Superior Town Council on November 7. Sansom has over 40 years experience in the construction industry, primarily in Arizona. He operated his own company, S.L. Sansom General Contractor Inc., working on projects that included light commercial projects , design and

construction of custom homes and remodeling projects, and the ownership and operation of a plumbing company. He held both an Arizona B2 General Contractors license and an Arizona Real Estate License. Sansom has an extensive knowledge of building codes, including having familiarized himself with the code book for the Town of Superior, as well as the town’s maps and zoning vocabulary. In

his initial inquiry into the position he is now stepping up to fill, Sansom said “I also have an appreciation for the history of the town and the need to preserve as much of the town’s identity as possible while staying in the confines of the zoning and codes.” He went on to say, regarding his vision for Superior “The town is about to enter a new era of real estate development and it will be critical to manage the planning

and zoning not only in a legal manner, but to appropriately develop the town of Superior according to the town’s planning and zoning codes.” In addition to his extensive experience in and knowledge of both the real estate and construction industries, Sansom has been a resident of Superior for over three years, owns his home in town, and has rehabilitated and is currently operating a retail store at 203 W. Main St.

technical competency. Education serves as the means to develop oneself physically, mentally and socially. Arizona has common core standards for education that are national standards. The standards were developed through a state-led initiative spearheaded by governors and state school chiefs. The federal government was not involved in developing the standards. Arizona is committed to staying on course and supporting the implementation of the common core. The State Board of Education can make changes to academic standards at any time. Good standards shouldn’t change too often, but over time evolve based on what is learned from research, from educators in the field and from student assessments. The standards reflect the real world expectations of what is necessary for students to succeed in higher education and the workforce, including critical thinking, problem solving, and effective communication skills. The standards were

developed using evidence that includes scholarly programs, assessment data identifying college and career ready performance and comparisons to standards from high performing states and nations, among other data. Together with highly trained, well supported teachers, the standards will better prepare Arizona students for college and careers. Education is a fundamental human right and essential for the exercise of all other human rights. It promotes individual freedom and empowerment and yields important development benefits. Superior School District cares deeply about the future of our youth and will be holding additional meetings about the vision of educational future. Expect More Arizona has high expectations for our youth. The organization can send out brochures about kindergarten to high school, tools that can be used to help children at home and to help them excel at school. http://www.nonnamarias.com/ 1 pound red potatoes, cut into chunks 8 ounces mascarpone cheese softened 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese 2 slices of cooked

Pie Crust: 2 c all purpose flour 2/3 c canola oil 6 tablespoons COLD water 1tsp sugar 1 tsp salt

Directions: Combine flour, salt & sugar. Next, in separate bowl, stir the oil and ice water until creamy, then pour over flour mixture. Mix well. Save dough till needed. Step 1: Cut off the top of 4 apples off and discard. Remove the inside of each apple with a spoon carefully, as to not puncture the peel. Salvage as much as you can so you can use it for Step 2. Step 2: With remaining apple dice very thinly. These apple pieces will give you the additional filling needed to fill the four apples you are baking. Mix these with the innards of the first 4 apples. Mix sliced apples with sugars and cinnamon in a bowl. You may modify sugar & cinnamon to your preference. Scoop apple/sugar mix into hollow apples. Step 3: Roll out pie crust and slice into 1/4 inch strips. Cover the top of the apple in a criss cross pattern with pie crust strips. Step 4: Place apples in an 8×8 pan. Add just enough apple cider to the cover the bottom of the pan. In separate bowl mix melted butter & 1 tablespoon of sugar. Pour this over the top of the pie crust. Cover with foil and bake for 20-25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes or until crust is golden brown and apples are soft

Directions: Place potatoes into a large pot and cover with lightly salted water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer about 20 minutes. Drain. In pan, cook bacon WELL. Crumble into bacon bits. Mash the potatoes until smooth, then add the mascarpone Cheddar cheese, bacon, and garlic powder. Mash until the ingredients are mixed well. Transfer to a serving dish,sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and scallions to garnish.

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F Rinse turkey, and pat dry. Loosen turkey breast skin, and insert pieces of butter between the skin and breast. Place apples inside the turkey. Sprinkle with garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Place turkey in a roasting bag (dust the inside of the bag lightly with flour), and pour apple cider on inside and outside of the bird. Close bag, and place turkey in a roasting pan. Bake turkey 3 to 3 1/2 hours in the preheated oven, or until the internal temperature is 180 degrees F measure in the meatiest part of the thigh. Remove turkey from bag, and let stand for at least 20 minutes before carving.

Directions: Cook pasta in salted water according to package directions. Reserve 1 cup pasta water before draining the pasta. In a second pot of water Add the broccoli to and cook over medium-high for 3-4 minutes, until fork tender, drain. While the broccoli is cooking, transfer the pasta to a large bowl. Add 1/4 cup pasta water, yogurt, aand 1/3 of the grated cheeses and stir until the cheese has melted. Stir in remaining cheese, one small handful at a time to prevent clumping. Add additional pasta water as necessary to thin the cheese sauce. Season with salt and pepper. Add the broccoli and sundried tomatoes , mix well, and serve.

Directions: Wet the rosemary & dredge through sugar. Use this rosemary as a garnish place in pitcher to serve. Combine remaining ingredients together in a pitcher and stir, stir, stir. Refrigerate for an hour or so (or longer!) before serving.

DECA members host ‘Fill the Bowl’ for the Superior Food Bank By Mila Besich Lira Superior Sun The Superior High School DECA club has taken on a community service project to help raise awareness on hunger in Superior. The student organization is hosting a “Fill the Bowl” fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013. The event ticket is $10 and includes all you can eat soup, salad and bread. There will be three soups to choose from including beef posole, chicken noodle soup and a vegetable soup. These bowls are not just your average soup bowls, they are bowls that have been decorated by the students, local artists, business owners and community leaders. All proceeds raised will benefit the Superior Food Bank. The food bank plans on using these funds to assist with holiday food boxes for those in need in Superior. The students have been researching statistics on hunger. During their presentation to the Superior School Board these statistics were what encouraged these students to host this important community event to raise awareness on hunger and gain support for the Superior Food Bank. DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs

A week of ups and downs for Resolution Copper By Mila Besich Lira Superior Sun Last week started out with a barrage of state and national news coverage upon Resolution Copper’s announcement that their Mine Plan of Operations would be submitted to the Tonto National Forest Service. The submission of the Mine Plan of Operations will mark the beginning of the full National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) review. The Mine Plan of Operations will be available electronically on the Resolution Copper website in the coming weeks. Resolution Copper hosted a community wide open house in Superior on Monday to allow

the community an opportunity to see the plan and ask questions before it was submitted to the Forest Service on Friday. On Wednesday, there was an unexpected call for a floor vote by the U.S. House of Representatives on the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act H.R. 687. As unexpectedly as the house vote was called by Representatives Gosar and Kirkpatrick the duo pulled the bill from the floor for a full vote within minutes of the floor vote. In a statement following the series of events both Gosar and Kirkpatrick vowed to keep fighting for the passage of the land exchange bill.

Kirkpatrick stated, “The setback on HR 687 is disappointing. The families in Arizona’s Copper Corridor need these jobs, and Arizona’s economy needs this boost. I remain committed to moving this forward, working across the aisle with Congressman Gosar and my colleagues, and bringing local stakeholders together. When it comes to creating jobs and strengthening the economy, we need to find common ground.” While the U.S. House of Representatives have not voted on the bill, Senator John McCain has requested a hearing in the Senate Energy Committee for Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013.

El Centro Youth Center moving to Superior; By John Hernandez Copper Area News Betty Chavez of Adelante Juntos Coalition (AJC) has announced that the El Centro Youth Center will be closed in San Manuel and moved to the town of Superior. The youth center will be moving in November. Betty is moving to Colorado Springs, Colo. to take care of her mother. Adelante Juntos will be

moving their office out of the B Avenue School building and returning to their old location until the first of the year. Diane Polanco, project assistant will be running the office. The closure of the office and youth center in San Manuel is due to the loss of funding. Money and grants have dried up in part due to the sequestration and government shutdown.

There is a possibility that the youth center may reopen if new funding becomes available. Betty has been involved with Adelante Juntos in San Manuel since 2005. She has been active in substance abuse prevention and working with youth in the Tri-Community and Copper Corridor. The STOP! Underage Drinking program has been a success in the area. “We have had good results and outcomes in the prevention of underage drinking and want to duplicate this in other areas like Superior and the Florence school districts,” said Betty.

Betty said that when she started, she did not understand community mobilization and coalition. She has been instrumental in establishing partnerships with law enforcement and other agencies that have resulted in more services for families along the Copper Corridor. Project STOP and National Night Out provided opportunities to build relationships with local law enforcement which has helped provide a safer, healthier, drug free community. In partnering with the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office they were able to raise community awareness of the crystal

meth problem through town hall meetings and community forums. Sheriff Paul Babeu and Lt. Tami Villar have helped immensely. The Neighborhood Meth Watch Program garnered Betty and Adelante Juntos Coalition national honors. AJC designed and implemented the program

in many rural communities in Pinal County. The Pinal County Attorney’s Office and Sheriff’s Office have helped fund AJC programs with donations from their RICO funds. Betty is proud that she has empowered others to be successful. She is “humbled and honored” to have been involved with

Elizabeth Magallanez named head the community in working with Safe Journey House, Copper Town Days, and the youth center. Her proudest moment was when the El Centro Youth Center opened its doors. This gave the youth in San Manuel a safe place to spend time after school and was used for many positive activities and events. Betty has given much to the community especially the youth in area. She will be missed. Elizabeth Magallanez is the Adelante Juntos Coalition Project Coordinator in Superior. She is working on finding

a location for the youth center. She will be under the supervision of Dr. John Zhang. “The center in San Manuel is very nice,” said Elizabeth. “I hope we can find a good location, getting the right location is key.” Elizabeth has been the chairperson of the Superior Substance Abuse Coalition (SSAC) for five years. She has worked for Resolution Copper and the Town of Superior. She is also involved with the Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition. Elizabeth and Adelante Juntos will be looking for volunteers to help

with the Youth Center and other programs. She will have AJC partner with existing programs such as the Culinary Arts School at Superior High School. AJC started up in Superior and is returning to the area. Although the loss of the youth center in San Manuel will hurt, Superior will be gaining a well established program to help the youth of the area.
