Police have impounded an estimated Sh112 billion in fake currency from two houses in Nairobi, said to be the biggest stash ever of such contraband in Africa. The massive haul of glittering dollar and euro contraband, that can cause serious inflation and other effects were it to be injected into the local economy, was found by officials from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in two houses—at Kilimani and Diamond Estate off Mombasa Road. More than 5,000 needy students in Kilifi county may be forced to stay out of class this term following a dispute over which bank Sh140 million earmarked for the scholarship fund should be deposited. The row between the County Assembly Education committee and the executive ensued after county secretary, Owen Baya, directed that the funds remain in Equity Bank contrary to the committee’s opinion that the cash be deposited in a National Bank account “The procedure for opening of the account with National Bank has not been followed,” a letter signed by Baya reads. But Education committee chair Getrude Mbeyu claimed all legal procedures had been followed and that the account had been in use for six months.

Squatters plea to the President More than 400 squatters living in Warazo colonial village in Kieni, Nyeri county have petitioned President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene and resettle them. The squatters yesterday marched from the village to the office of area Deputy County Commissioner at Chaka trading centre, where they presented their petition. They said their plight has been ignored by successive post-independence regimes. Through lawyer John Mwai, the squatters threatened to boycott voting in 2017 elections if their demands are not met.

suicide bombers. KDF sources in Nairobi said an intensive search and rescue operation was in top gear at the El-Adde area of Gedo region in Somalia. The attack on KDF camp was launched at about 4am last Friday, claiming unspecified number of soldiers and militants. General Mwathethe said on Sunday the militants stormed the Somalia National Army (SNA) and KDF camps aboard three vehicles heavily laden with explosives and detonated. In tow were suicide bombers rigged with explosive vests. Vowing KDF’s resolve to pursue and eliminate the al Shabaab threat, Mwathethe said: “We will fight them deep in their hideouts, we will smoke them out of their caves and we will follow them to the end in honour of every drop of blood of our Kenyans. As we speak, the search, rescue and recovery operation is ongoing as a matter of priority and has been ongoing for the past 72 hours. We have also pursued the enemies and done so effectively through concerted efforts of our land and air assets and severely degraded them. We will not allow any further casualties.” And last evening, the first batch of bodies of Kenya’s fallen heroes were expected to arrive at Wilson Airport. Reports indicated the flag-bedecked bodies were to be received at about 8.30pm. Meanwhile, the Opposition leadership yesterday called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to declare a two-day period of national mourning beginning today with the flags flown at half-mast to mourn the soldiers killed in the attack. In a statement signed by the Cord principals, Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetang’ula, the Opposition also urged the government to give a detailed statement of what hap-

Cases of clerics who make calls for religious regulation valid Faith is the platform and anchor for believers. Clerics provide the physical link on spiritual matters. Bid to exorcise demons using kerosene backfires A minor in Nakuru is nursing burns after an exorcism ritual using Kerosene by clerics, went awry. The minor is claimed to have been possessed by demons which prompted the men of cloth from ‘Mowar Israel’ to drive out demons by making her drink Kerosene while the rest was sprinkled on her as they prayed using lit candles on their hands. One of the clerics who had Kerosene in his mouth, spat it towards the girl while holding a burning candle which inflicted burns on her face!
A Zimbabwean pastor came up with an unconventional strategy for passing exams! All you need to do is buy a pen. Prophet’ Sham Hungwe, from Harare, attracted a lot of attention after he began selling hundreds of special, ‘anointed’ pens to candidates. He told faithful during a sermon, that the miracle pens would help students pass exams without even studying! Predictably, many saw this as the shortest route to success and the sanctified pens literally flew off the shelves! There was no fixed price. According to him, the more you pay, the higher marks you get in exams! Pastor Sham was criticised with some people calling for his arrest, accusing him of ruining the standard of education and mocking religious sentiments. It is unclear whether miracle pens worked miracles to those who abandoned their books and anchored their hopes on the pen!
Patients given ‘holy water’ to cure Ebola During the escalated Ebola crisis in West Africa, a Nigerian preacher, Temitope Joshua, sent the Sierra Leone government 4,000 bottles of patented ‘holy water’, which he claimed would cure Ebola. For years, Joshua has been claiming to use his magic water to cure a host of health problems, including infertility, tumours and more. He also claims that he has been distributing the anointing water to several nations including the USA, UK, Greece, India, and Russia, through his church, the Synagogue Church of All Nations, based in Lagos. The water, he says, has helped the “sick, afflicted and oppressed.” Well, it was never confirmed whether the magical aqua actually helped!
Preacher slaughters man to bring him back to life, but fails In September 2014, a religious leader was arrested for killing a follower to prove his claim that he could bring him back to life. Muhammad Sabir, a resident of Mubarakabad in Bahawalnagar, had gained popularity over years for his ability to perform “miracles.” When he claimed he could bring the dead back to life, 40-year-old Muhammad Niaz, volunteered for the miracle. Niaz was placed on a table in a square, and his hands and legs were bound. Sabir then sliced his throat as people looked on. By the time police reached him, Niaz had died. Witnesses said Sabir uttered some words to bring him back to life, but when he realised his “miracle” had not worked, he tried to flee before being arrested and charged with murder.

National Land Commission (NLC) chairman Mohammed Swazuri has halted all constructions on a controversial 21-acre land owned by a former senior public servant and ordered hundreds of squatters who had invaded the property to vacate immediately. ODM party to unveil Malindi by-election nominee today by Luke Awich @AchiaAwich
ODM party will today unveil its nominee for the Malindi Parliamentary seat days after an attempt to conduct the nomination ended in disarray. Yesterday, the party deputy leader Hassan Joho (pictured) held a consultative meeting with the aspirants where a deal is said to have been reached on who will represent the Orange party in the
by-election scheduled for March 7. Cord leader Raila Odinga was also present at Orange House yesterday where the deal is said to have been reached. On Saturday, ODM’s attempt to conduct a nomination in the constituency ended without winner after the poll officials declined to release the results yielding to complains from supporters and candidates that the exercised was marred by massive irregularities. The tallying exercise ended pre-
maturely at Tadhibu Muslim Academy in Malindi after Kakuyuni MCA Nixon Mramba alleged that some ballot papers had been stolen by people who had reportedly been ferried to the centre. Mramba’s allegations sparked outrage among party supporters forcing ODM electoral officials to call off the exercise without announcing the winner. ODM National Elections Board (NEB) chairperson Judy Pareno yesterday, in a statement to news-

CS asks board to weed out illegal contractors by James Momanyi @PeopleDailyKe
Lands Cabinet secretary Prof Jacob Kaimenyi (pictured) has asked the Board of Registration of Architects and Quantity Surveyors (BORAQS) to expedite the process of weeding out foreigners practising illegally in the country. He also asked the board to enhance its partnership with learning institutions such as the Management University of Africa and University of Nairobi to improve training on the soft skills of its registered professionals and stakeholders to enhance service delivery. He added that linkages with UN-Habitat would also strengthen sustainability in the building sector, particularly at the design stage. “The fact that they (foreigners) continue to practise illegally within our borders is a matter that should be tackled urgently in partnership with the Department of Immigration and other pertinent instruments of government,” said the CS when he inaugurated new board members at his Ardhi House office yesterday. The new team will oversee the operations of the board for a three-year term. Board chair Nathan Kureba said his team will undertake reforms to instill professionalism in the sector,

A suspected serial killer was yesterday charged in a Nakuru court with the death of a 20-year-old commercial sex worker. The accused, Ashton Wachira, 32, was arrested by police officers on patrol at Free Hold area two days ago. According to police, Wachira had parked his tuk tuk in a suspicious manner drawing their attention. His arrest comes in the wake of a spate of killings of commercial sex workers in Nakuru by unknown people. He was arraigned before Lady Justice Maureen Odero referred him to Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital (RVPGH) where a psychiatrist is expected to ascertain his mental status. The accused allegedly committed the offence on January 16 at Free Hold area in the town. When his name was called out in court, the accused declined to respond saying he had converted to Islam a while ago and therefore, now has a different name. However, the judge pointed out that his religion “was currently not a concern of the court” and that he had been called out by the names indicted in his identification card. displayed by detectives, resembled a bank strongroom, with the cache looking the exact replica of legal American and European tender. Police said the phony stockpile was part of a widespread, crossborder, fake money printing ring. Two suspected foreign kingpins were apprehended in possession of $693 million (Sh71 billion) and €369 million (Sh41 billion), in what detectives said exceeded any such confiscation of fake bank notes in Africa. Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet said two foreigners—Mohammed Sani alias Mustafa, a Niger and Ousman Bako, a Cameroonian—suspected to be the masterminds of the racket were arrested during the weekend. “Two individuals, a Cameroonian and a Niger have been arrested in possession of the bogus money after we received a complaint from the Comoros that fake money from Kenya was being channelled there,” he said. However, in what potentially predisposes the country into a major transnational fake currency transit and money-laundering centre, Boinnet said their local accomplices were still at large. The money was allegedly shipped from war-torn and extremist-controlled Syria in the Middle East. Director of Criminal Investigations Ndegwa Muhoro was represented at the DCI press conference by his deputy Gideon Ashimalla. Investigators from the Economic Crimes Unit made the breakthrough at the weekend sting operation following a tip-off by a member of the public, Boinnet said at Mazingara House.

WHAT SH112 BILLION CAN DO IN KENYA
Build 161km of the 485km Standard Gauge Railway Construct four eight-lane Thika superhighways Fund more than half of the Education ministry’s Sh200b budget Finance the Health ministry’s annual budget of Sh60 billion for two years Run six phases of Kenya’s School laptop project
A computer, money-printing chemicals, sophisticated printers and other equipment used to make the counterfeit cash were carted away by police as exhibits. The money was found stashed in five metallic safes and three suitcases. Police also recovered foils, glue and other materials stuffed in cartons. Police said they were trailing the suspects over allegations of conning a businessman of Sh400 million and upon search, found the fake currency haul. It was still unclear for how long the fake money-printing syndicate had been going in the country and neither were details available of their association with Syria in transiting such colossal fake amounts.
The consequences
The suspects were expected to be charged with printing fake currency and smuggling it out of the country alongside other serious fraud charges. Financial experts yesterday said the risk of sending the economy into a spiral was real if such a haul

were to enter the local money market. Sh112 billion, which is about 2.3 per cent of the annual national budget, is enough to construct 161km of the Standard Gauge Railway. It can also fund more than half of the Education ministry’s budget of Sh200 billion or build four times the eight-lane, 50km Thika superhighway. Fine details of how the cash is printed and transited will only emerge when the culprits appear for hearing in court. In 2013, three Turkish nationals were arrested and charged at Makadara Law Courts after police confiscated undeclared Sh29,580,000 ($348,000) at JKIA en-route to Mogadishu, Somalia. The cash was being transported as ordinary luggage aboard a local flight. Boinnet said the fake money recovered at the weekend could have had a major negative impact even in the region were it to filter through. Kenya has occasionally been blamed for weak capital controls
despite being a major economic hub where currencies are freely convertible for foreign trade and other current account transactions. The racket, thriving on shady operations, is said to target local and foreign countries. Meanwhile, Boinnet sent condolences to families and friends of Kenya Defence Forces soldiers killed during a dawn attack at the El Adde camp in Somalia. He also confirmed police have identified “several people of interest” involved in circulating gory images of slain KDF officers on social media and warned the act amounts to glorifying terrorism. The police boss also urged media to exercise caution while reporting terrorism matters so as not to advance the terrorists’ agenda. “We are mourning with our KDF officers but we will continue working together to protect our motherland. We want to caution members of the public spreading gruesome images. We have identified several people of interest, who will soon be arrested and taken to court,” he said.
The mother of a Form Three girl whose both arms were allegedly chopped off by her boyfriend in 2013, has appealed for help to enable her go back to school. Martha Mbulungo, a former Yumbisye Secondary School student, was this year admitted to Thika’s Joytown Secondary School for Physically Handicapped to continue with her education. Her mother Mary Mbulungo said she was unable to raise the Sh28,000 required as fees for this year as well as cash for her shopping. In total, she said, they need Sh50,000 for her to report to school. Speaking to the People Daily in Kitui town, Mary, a food hawker, said her daughter was expected to report yesterday (January 18) but she was unable to raise the fees.
Beastly attack “I am delighted that after my daughter’s dream to pursue education was shattered by the beastly attack that left her with permanent disability can now be relived. She will start a new life for a better future, if we get the help we are looking for,” she said. The girl will repeat Form Two so as to catch up with other students, her mother said. In the admission letter (seen by the People Daily), Joytown Principal J P Komonye instructed the girl to report to the school on January 18 at 9am and risk to lose the position if she does not report in a week’s time. The girl is embroiled in a legal tussle with the assailant Wilson Mwendwa Kyalo in a Kitui court who is charged with two counts of attempting to murder her and causing her bodily harm in 2013.

Kanu has reiterated that it will field a presidential candidate in next year’s General Election to face-off with incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta. And party chair Gideon Moi asked Deputy President William Ruto to back their candidate in the poll, promising to return the favour in 2022 when the DP plans to seek the top seat. The Baringo senator, however, declined to name the possible party flag bearer for the 2017
poll. He was speaking at Moi’s Gardens in Kericho yesterday when he presented the party’s certificate to Paul Sang, the party flagbearer for the March 7 Kericho senatorial by-election. He was accompanied by the party secretary general Nick Salat, Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto and Kenya National Union of Teachers secretaries Daniel Chumo (Bureti), Stanley Mutai (Kericho) and David Bore (Kipkelion). “Some politicians have been telling us to wait until 2022 so that we back somebody else next

Time is now to know who our friends are,” he said. “We want development, infrastructure and security now, and to fight corruption today not tomorrow. We can only do this effectively while in power. Why then wait until 2022?” Gideon and Salat at the same time sent messages of condolences of families of the Kenya Defence Forces soldiers who were killed by al Shabaab militants in Somalia last week. “We pray for their families. We recognise they were gal-
lant soldiers who have made us proud. May God rest their souls in peace,” said Gideon. Salat called on the government to investigate circumstances that led to the butchering of the soldiers, saying it cannot be business as usual when so many lives have been lost. Ruto urged Kericho residents to vote for a visionary leader who will push devolution agenda. The March by-election was necessitated by the resignation of Senator Charles Keter after he was appointed Energy Cabinet secretary last year.

The gang of about 20 youths also hacked the coffin into pieces, spilling the deceased’s body on the ground. They destroyed tents and chairs, cut down trees, bananas and other crops. Mourners who had gathered at the home of Albert Muchesia to give his wife a final sendoff scampered for safety after the thugs, who were armed with crude weapons, injured several people. A grief-stricken Muchesia said he and his family members escaped death narrowly after they took off and locked themselves inside the house before alerting police. But in the hurry to save their lives, the body of his wife was left lying on the ground. Muchesia’s brother Patrick Anguba said they suspected that the thugs were hired by

ignored all the sale documents in our possession,” he said. Anguba said the group served the bereaved family with a court order on Friday night warning them not to bury the deceased on the land but they ignored it because, he said, it was not signed. By the time of going to press, police were providing security at the homestead with the family frantically making plans to buy a new coffin and lay the deceased to rest. They, however, expressed fears that the gang, which fled after wrecking havoc, might return to exhume the body and harm them. “They are opposed to the

Kakamega Central police boss Richard Ng’etich urged the family to remain calm as they investigate to ascertain who were behind the attack. He also promised to arrest the gang. “We are on the look out for them. If they have issues, they should resolve them amicably instead of engaging in such illegal acts,” said Ng’etich.
We are set to join Jubilee after talks, says Lusaka by Mukalo Kwayera @kwayeram
New Ford Kenya (NFK) party leader Ken Lusaka says his party will wind up in due course to join the proposed Jubilee Party after consulting its members. The Bungoma Governor told People Daily yesterday that talks were ongoing among leaders of parties under the ruling Jubilee Alliance. But he said it was premature to give a party position on the matter because nothing concrete had come out of the consultations yet. “We have not reached any decision on the matter. The process requires thorough
and genuine consultations. We shall first have to consult widely within our party ranks before coming up with a final word on the issue,” Lusaka said. Jubilee affiliates have agreed to fuse the outfits into one entity known as Jubilee Party (JP).

Youth envy graft lords’ lifestyles, shows survey
Political Parties Liaison Committee (PPLC) chairperson Wavinya Ndeti has claimed that there are plans to do away with multiparty system of governance in the country. Speaking at a church in Kathiani, Wavinya (pictured) said that the PPLC, which is supposed to be in the Political Parties Act and was decided upon by the Kriggler Commission has not been implemented to date. “Our regulations have been in Parliament for the last two years and nothing has been done about them. There is an effort to ensure that PPLC does not work,” she said. She accused the Registrar of Political Parties office of sidelining her committee by ensuring it did not carry out its mandate.

The study conducted by the Aga Khan University and funded by International Development Research Centre (IDRC) shows youth admire wealthy individuals, corrupt or not. Apparently, 73 per cent are afraid to stand up for what is right for fear of retribution with a lowly 40 per cent strongly believing it is important to pay taxes. This comes as multi-billionshilling corruption scandals have dogged Kenya and made headlines globally. Despite government’s resolve to fight the menace, few

Survey paints damning picture of influence unchecked corruption has had on country’s younger population
Majority of youth in Kenya would amass wealth quickly and corruptly as long as they did not get caught, a study has revealed. The survey showed that 35 per cent would readily take or give a bribe as it emerged majority see corruption as a sure way to gain wealth quickly. Anti-corruption activist John Githongo has attributed the worrying trend to escalating cases of corruption in the country which have gone unpunished. “These findings are disturbing. Over the past 50 years, people have looted the country but none has been punished…the youth look at this and get inspired to do the same,” he said. Githongo says all is not lost as long as President Uhuru Kenyatta cracks the whip on corrupt officials.

This comes a day after a driver was killed by suspected thugs on the busy road, with his colleagues identifying Longonot and Chechnia as the most notorious areas. “We are concerned by the planned robberies targeting trailers along the highway and we ask police to deal with this cartel,” said Ali Juma, a driver. Police in the past have accused some of the drivers
using the road of colluding with the thugs to steal transit cargo. Meanwhile, property worth millions of shillings was reduced to ashes after fire gutted down a residential plot in Naivasha. More than 10 families were left homeless though no one was injured. The fire is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault in one of the houses located near DEB primary school. It took the intervention of fire fighters from NYS training school in Gilgil to contain the fire and stop it from spreading to nearby houses.

Judge gets Sh5 million for malicious prosecution After being acquitted of attempted murder, Judge to be compensated for spiteful indictment by Paul Muhoho @PeopleDailyKe
Appellate Judge GBM Kariuki has been awarded Sh5 million compensation for malicious prosecution over alleged attempted murder of a motorist six years ago. High Court judge George Odunga has criticised police for their “unusual haste” in prosecuting Justice Kariuki before the complainant, Robert Karori, and other witnesses had recorded their statements following a confrontation between the two. He, however, dismissed an assertion by Justice Kariuki that the criminal case was instigated by former Justice Minister Martha Karua in retaliation for their alleged acrimonious fallout. The judge was alleged to have stabbed Karori with a Somali sword but the alleged offensive weapon was never discovered or produced as exhibit during the one-year trial before

He obviously must have gone through trying moments. However, it would seem that his employer did not think much of
the prosecution since at the time he was giving evidence in these proceedings, he was the head of the Family Division of the High Court at Milimani and was subsequently elevated to the Court of Appeal,” Justice Odunga observed in his 75-page judgment. “The position of a judge depends on the trust that the public has in the holder of that office to dispense justice and where the holder himself is charged with a criminal offence, that confidence is bound to be eroded,” said Odunga.

Sustain impetus to restore tourism sector’s lost glory The positive vibes about the tourism sector is currently riding on a reenergised platform which is elevating it back on a growth projection not seen for a while. Arrivals which had dropped by almost 20 per cent last year, depriving Kenya of much-needed foreign exchange and threatening half a million jobs in the broader hospitality industry, are now looking up. The feeling within the sector is ebullient and stakeholders believe this is the time to turn around Kenya’s Sh100 billion tourism sector and boost the muchneeded foreign exchange. While the government’s ambitious target of three million visitors a year by 2017 may not be within reach, recent moves to spur the sector growth are spot on. Security has been beefed up throughout the country and coastline coupled with massive investment in tourism infrastructure such as upgrading airstrips. The government has also moved to encourage family visits by withdrawing the requirement for children under 16 years to pay visa fees and entry to Kenya’s national
All the 47 devolved units offer very unique tourism products that are waiting to be leveraged on to pump impetus into the Kenya tourism experience parks. This should boost numbers. The sector will benefit greatly from the Sh1.2 billion Charter Incentive Programme which intends to waive landing fees for all tourist charters with passengers terminating at Moi International Airport Mombasa and Malindi Airport, coupled with a $30 passenger subsidy per seat filled by international passengers who terminate or disembark in Kenya over the same period. To this end, Kenya must restore the competitive edge of the coastal region as a tourism destination while ensuring the marine and beach tourism products are sustained. The beach and safari products must also be upgraded while introducing new brands to boost the experience. The newly opened English Point Marina is a classic example of efforts to change the Mombasa tourism experience and boost Kenya’s tourism package. The transformative marina is expected to put Kenya on the map of luxury boat markets which span the Mediterranean region, Egypt, Dubai, South Africa and the Far East. The iconic development is expected to attract an investment of approximately Sh5 billion. While Kenya targets visitors from new markets such as Russia, Hungary and Nigeria as well as the European nations on which Kenya has traditionally relied, the same energy should be put beyond these core markets to tap new markets such as China. More importantly, the government must fast-track local tourism as the bedrock of the sector growth. Kenyans have already proved that with the right approach, they can sustain the sector. All the 47 devolved units offer very unique tourism products that are waiting to be leveraged on to pump impetus into the Kenya tourism experience. We must not lose the momentum.

Go beyond hashtags in appreciating fallen soldiers News of the al Shabaab attack on the KDF military camp in Somalia left Kenyans shell-shocked. May the Lord rest the souls of those who died in eternal peace and heal the survivors. As we mourn the loss as a nation, it is critical that we look beyond the statistics and recognise that the soldiers were beloved members of families and communities that have been hit hard by the loss of lives. It is heart-breaking! As we receive the bodies of the soldiers who paid the ultimate price, we need to have a candid reflection on how we have treated families of our departed soldiers in the past. We need to ask tough questions: Do our past actions demonstrate the fact that we really care about deployed soldiers and veterans? Have we done enough for the families that have lost loved ones on the battlefield? Do we have a structured process through which their dependants can be fully supported? Are we adequately supportive of soldiers who have suffered shattering injuries in line of duty? Are our soldiers properly supported to deal with the trauma they face on the battlefield? It was heart-breaking this week to hear a widow of a soldier call one of the radio stations to complain that she was yet to be paid compensation for her husband who was killed in the line of duty back in 2014. Indeed, it is a fact that many veteran soldiers who have returned home after suffering devastating injuries in the line of duty end up living like paupers. It is heart-breaking that after risking everything for us, they end up not feeling appreciated by the very people they risked everything to protect! In dealing with this matter, we need not just point fingers at the government but at ourselves
as well. There is a lot we can do to support our soldiers and their families. We can learn from others. In the US, for example, a citizen-led initiative known as Soldiers’ Angels provides aid and comfort to members of the army and their families. The mantra of the group is “May No Soldier Go Unloved”. To date, volunteers from Soldiers’ Angels have sent hundreds of thousands of care packages and millions of letters and cards to “adopted” deployed service members. So far, they have supplied the wounded with over 25,000 First Response Backpacks and provided care and comfort to those in State military facilities. The story of Soldiers’ Angels got me thinking
When is the last time you physically appreciated a soldier for keeping our nation safe? about what citizens can do to support our military families and veterans. Below are some ideas that we can try: First, we should set up initiatives to ensure our returning soldiers are publicly acknowledged for their contribution. They need to feel appreciated. In the US, whenever returning soldiers land, they receive a standing ovation from hundreds of bystanders at the airport. This show of love makes the returning soldiers immediately feel their sacrifice is recognised. When was the last time you physically appreciated a soldier for keeping our nation safe?
Secondly, it is not enough to commiserate with soldiers on radio and social media. We need to think of creative ways in which we can let them know we appreciate them. How about “adopting” deployed soldiers and communicating with them regularly? Thirdly, most of our wounded soldiers are taken to military hospitals but hardly anyone follows up to know whether the treatment they receive is adequate. There are a number of ways in which we can support the soldiers to make a full recovery, including galvanising financial backing to support cases where treatment abroad is required. We have done it for civilians, why not for the brave soldiers? Again, the most affected people when a soldier falls is the family and often they are left on their own immediately their loved one is buried. We need to set up initiatives to ensure comfort for such families. There are numerous ways we can do this, including setting up visitation teams and delivering household supplies for the families. We can also “adopt” military families that have lost their loved ones and ensure their basic needs are met continuously. Finally, we need to push for policies that will ensure our soldiers and their families are well protected. The policies should ensure proper compensation for deployed soldiers and veterans. Further, soldiers need to be provided with a comprehensive insurance package that covers all risks. We owe our soldiers a huge debt of gratitude. Let’s act now. Media should not have licence to kill stories of interest In his 1922 Public Opinion book, American journalist Walter Lippmann dedicates a whole chapter on how the media connects events of the world and the images in people’s minds. He says though the media may not always succeed in telling people what to think, it is stunningly successful in telling its audience what to think about. This concept was later called the media agenda-setting theory by theorists Maxwell McCombs and Donald Shaw in their Public Opinion Quarterly five decades later. Simply, the theory holds that media defines the public agenda—tells the masses what to talk about in given periods—based on their ability to influence the salience of topics. No doubt, the local media have effectively defined the Kenyan public agenda. It’s media reportage of current affairs that inform debates in barazas, social joints, online and elsewhere. However, one thing that seems of least interest to media scholars is how media also
tell audience what to forget and how fast to do so. Media have proved notorious story killers! Sometime last year, Faustin Munishi—that veteran Tanzanian gospel artiste who has lived in Kenya longer than he did in his home country—was on a local TV talkshow. His answer to a question on why he hasn’t been on TV screens aptly highlighted the role of the media in ‘killing’ stories. The question was why Munishi was not as popular as he used to be. His answer? “You (the media) make or kill our (celebrities’) popularity.” It’s the media that make celebrities popular or otherwise! This got me thinking about how many stories of public interest the media hasvekilled, lately. Media have made stories, like matchstick flame, hit headlines with a bang only for them to fizzle out and eventually be forgotten shortly after. Understandably, one of the key determinants of newsworthiness of a story is freshness or newness. Again, newsmen and
women can only dig in for fresh aspects in stories up to a given extent. For instance, journalists can only comment on crime stories up to the time they enter judicial trial process. After that, they can only report the court proceeding lest they are cited for contempt. The latter explains exactly why Kenyans may have forgotten a governor in Eastern region was being impeached, that a county Assembly Speaker and an MCA “kidnapped themselves”, that a certain MP “raped” a journalist or that a doctor in Kasarani “sedated and raped” patients. These matters became subject to court proceedings and journalists “abandoned” them. However, there are so many stories the media can tell and retell, including what became of a land saga between a city hotel and a primary school, the Cord’s solidarity account for teachers, the alleged attempts on Raila Odinga’s life as once claimed by his elder brother Oburu Oginga and the
flopped coffee marketing deal propped up by a Central Kenya governor! Again, Kenyans were once upon a time promised a public disclosure of the autopsy results of the late minister Mutula Kilonzo and Senator Otieno Kajwang’. There was also that Githurai cop and gangbuster Katitu (nickname). What of the missing self-confessed god Jehova Wanyonyi? Was he ever found, dead or alive? Some authorities also vowed to act on misbehaving MPs after a shameful parliamentary session that left egg on the face of the nation. Just what happened? Is there a justification why media should kill stories that impact on or affect lives of millions? The media have an unwritten contract with society to, among other things, keep the populace in the know. It’s for this reason that human-interest stories should remain “developing stories”. —The writer is Deputy Chief Sub People Daily. —

Matiang’i impromptu school visits are policy driven This month, Education Cabinet secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i has visited six schools in Mombasa and Nakuru counties without the administrations of the schools having had prior information of the tour. The random inspection visits is a normal but strategic management and leadership tool that should not jolt the nerves of school administrators. Management thinkers, notably, American Management Consultant, Tom Peters, call this kind of management style, management by wandering around (MBWA). Effective school administrators know it well. They have not only practiced it at school level; they also
studied it in training institutions. MBWA is a style of management, which involves managers wandering around, in an unstructured manner, through the workplace(s), to check with employees, or equipment, about the status of ongoing work. It is consistent with management of education policy, standards and curricular, that education leaders make formal and informal inspection tours in schools to provide supervision or to determine how well the principals are providing the required supervision to administrative and pedagogic aspects of school management and leadership. A thief was force-fed more than 40 bananas by police in India to recover a stolen necklace he had swallowed. The 25-year-old man had denied snatching the gold chain from a woman on the street in Mumbai, but X-rays indicated he had consumed it in a bid to conceal his crime. Initially, an enema was administered to try and retrieve the jewellery. But when this failed, officers resorted to a more unorthodox technique after deciding an operation would be too expensive. “He was fed more than 40 bananas throughout the day,” said Mumbai police senior inspector Shankar Dhanavade. “Eventually the chain was found. We made him wash and disinfect it.” The suspect appeared in court on Friday. It is not the first time Mumbai police have used the fruit to recover stolen goods. Our vision is to be a leading organisation in offering solutions that will lead to sustainable development. Q: What else does the centre’s mandate entail? A. In addition to anchoring our programmes on Vision 2030, we are also aligned to the newlyreleased UN Social Development Goals (SDGs), which are part of the Global Goals. We are most keen on Goal 13, which states: “Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts”. Although our mission is to create awareness on climate change through mass media, we have also created comprehensive programmes to help us achieve our mandate in a holistic manner. The programmes revolve around information, communication and education; women and youth; research and advocacy; forestry and tree planting; pollution and green economy. Q. Addressing climate change remains a major challenge that has even captured the attention of world leaders. What is the impact of global warming in Kenya? A. Although climate change is a global phenomenon, developing countries, like Kenya, are the most vulnerable to rising temperatures. Indeed, Kenya is a member of the recently launched Vulnerable 20, which brings together 20 countries with a population of almost 700

Photo: COURTESY million people who are economically most vulnerable to climate change. We experienced first-hand the environmental and financial damage that climate change can cause during the 1997/98 El Nino rains. We are now faced with another period of the same. Our weather patterns have also changed drastically and there is no predictability any more. This has affected many economic activities, especially agriculture, which is one of the top foreign exchange earners. We must all come together and take action to mitigate climate change now before it is too late.
Q. You have recently threatened to take class (legal) action against local franchises of Volkswagen vehicles in relation to the diesel gas emission scandal in America and Europe. Tell us about it. A. The diesel gas emissions scandal was exposed in the US last year after an environmental lobby group revealed that the Germanbased VW Group had used “defeat devices” to deceive authorities on the level of pollution from some motor vehicle models since 2009. Through our lawyers, we first wrote to the National Environmental Management Agency (NEMA) and the Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) demanding that they com-
pel local VW franchise(s) to state their position on the scandal. Secondly, we asked them to state the action they would take against the franchises to mitigate the effects of the consequent environmental pollution. We have received a response from Kebs, who said the imported cars had been issued with Road Worthiness certificates at source after complying with Kenya Standard KS 1515. However, the letter did not explain what the standard measures are and whether Kebs had the capability to detect the so called “defeat devices”. Lawyers representing one of the VW franchises also responded, stating Kebs position.

The right to a clean environment is enshrined under, among other Statutes, Article 69 of the Constitution and the Environmental Management and Coordination Act of 1999. These statutes provide guidance to the State in ensuring sustainable management of the environment and the role of different actors. We have now written directly to the local franchises notifying them of our intention to go to court. Kenya is a big market for VW vehicles and so the scandal definitely affects us. Through these actions, the centre aims at sensitising the government about enforcing existing environmental protection laws and enacting more legislation where necessary. Q. What are your future plans? A. We want awareness about global warming and climate change to reach the high levels like people have on HIV/Aids. So far, the majority of people still think climate change is a figment of the imagination of scientists. However, the evidence of the devastation being caused by this extreme weather phenomenon is becoming evident all over the world. We are now faced by El Nino rains, which have forced the government to divert colossal amounts of funds and other resources from development activities to mitigation and adaptation measures. We need to empower everyone in seeking lifestyles, modes of production and agricultural practices that leave the least carbon blueprint on an increasingly delicate environment.

The dancing diva
H @obel_barry
er heart and soul dwell in dance, and in it she finds not only peace but happiness. Nikolina Nikoleski is a world renowned dancer, choreographer and trainer. Dance to her is a language of a kind and like one of her teachers, she says, “I’m interested in what moves people, not how they move.” The 39-year-old has managed to make a name for herself over the years because of passion and purpose, aspects she believes take her all the way. “I started aged four, first with gymnastics and ballerina training. From then, I always knew I wanted to be a dancer because in it there was real expression,’’ she says. After high school, the second born in her family left her homeland of Zagreb, Croatia and headed to Asia and Western Europe to gain experience in the craft. But nothing was smooth sailing. Especially not with skeptical parents who wanted a more conventional path for their child. “My parents were not easily convinced, they thought it was not a sustainable path. They had their concerns with predictability of the field,’’ adds the New Delhi based artist. From the people she met along the way, to the cultures she rubbed shoulders with, Nikoleski was taken by life as a dancer. In three decades she has built an incredible resumé with unparalleled experience. In 2004, she moved to Germany and later India via a Government scholarship. Here, she learnt a valuable part of her trade that was pivotal for her. “I got to acquaint myself with contemporary dance at the prestigious Folkwang Hochschule Essen, belonging to legendary dancer Pina Bausch and spent a further six years in India learning classical dance with the highly regarded guru, Padamshree Dr Saroja Vaidyanathan. There I discovered and consequently learnt varied dance techniques provoked by philosophy and thought,’’ she says. India is a large country known for an elaborate dance industry which has drawn worldwide acclaim. “I toured the country and performed all over,
She is croatian but dances to an Indian beat. Nikolina Nikoleski, a contemporary and classical Bharantanatyam world renown dancer, is in the country for a series of workshops and performances and Barry Silah caught up with her to hear her story experimenting with styles. The versatile nature of the industry opened my eyes to a completely different universe. People even spoke different languages yet they were from the same country,’’ she says. After her study sojourn, she opted to stay in India where she set up a dance academy in 2012. This was because she had studied and appreciated the vibrancy and richness of the culture in her new spot during her studies. “We established the organisation with the intention of making the dance industry proffessional. We offer classical ballet, social dancing, yoga and contemporary dance at the academy”. Nikolina Nikoleski Dance Company is a reputed team of professional artists, with her playing the role of Artistic Director. Earlier she had a stint as a
Dance Professor at the French Embassy School in New Delhi and also was the Head of Performing Arts Department at the Father Angel School. Geographical distance between Europe and Asia notwithstanding,

At a glance • Nikolina has been featured in many documentaries and TV shows, performing in great festivals, theatres and other venues across India and abroad. • Her most recent contemporary dance production that unites fashion, dance and opera into magical portrait of life through different generations sold out in New Delhi. • She has worked with greats across the globe, such as dancers Pina Bausch Tanztheater Wuppertal, Ben Riepe and Sasha Waltz from Germany and Merce Cunningham, Jose Limon, Martha Graham, Bob Wilson and Lucinda Childs from USA amongst others. • She has bagged three prestigious dance scholarships from some of the world’s finest institutions such as: The dancing queen. She has also received numerous prestigious scholarships from some of the world’s finest institutions — Bhaskara Scholarship for Bharatanatyam at Bhaskara College of Fine Arts; Ana Maletic School of Dance & Rhytmics in Zagreb Croatia; Paul & Maria Kremer Scholarship in Cologne Germany; and Folkwang Scholarship for contemporary dance & dance theatre at Folkwang Hochschule Essen in Germany alongside Salzburg Experimental Academy in Austria. there are a lot of connecting points when it comes to dance, it is a way of communicating though not without some difference. “In Europe, there is an introverted approach to dance, as opposed to Asia where people are much more expressive and emotional. In Indian dance, there is a lot of smiling which uplifts the whole performance,’’ she says. Thus far she has taught close to 500 students, receiving widespread appreciation because of her charm. Though her end product is excellent, according to Nikoleski, it can only get better.

The language of Venus Happy wife, happy life, so the saying goes. Is it really true that making the woman in your life happy makes everything easier? Faith Kyoumukama explores
the woman is the one who takes care of the home. But according to A marriage counsellor, Sheila Wachira, this expectation may lead to a decrease in a woman’s happiness. “ While she may enjoy doing it, the pressure and expectations of having to take care of everyone around them might be a burden on her. A good way to counter this is to make sure her happiness is top priority. This way she feels appreciated,” she says. Wachira explains that the woman does not feel pressured to do anything, but her actions are instead borne out of her own volition and are something she enjoys doing then the marriage is more fulfilling. In her expert opinion, people tend to translate happiness in marriage as being things such as financial security, while it only boils down to two aspects; understanding and appreciation. “A happy marriage is just two people understanding and appreciating each other: who the two are as a union and as a man and woman, what comes with the package.” A woman needs to feel valued, cared for and loved in a union; that checks the boxes in her happiness list. While a man needs respect and to feel appreciated.

omen and men are different; what makes a man happy does not necessarily work for a woman and vice versa . But men on the other hand believe that when they make their wives happy, their women are not aggravated with them and thus everyone is happy. Twenty Eight-yearold Aldo Mpamya is one such man, “I make you happy and in return I get happy, after all marriage is a partnership, ” he says in jest. According to tradition, women are often expected to take care of their husbands. The notion has been fed to them over a long period of time; that

Relationships are like jigsaw puzzles only function differently. A wise man should, therefore, allow his woman to express and manifest her strengths for his own benefit. When women are allowed to flourish, they exhibit amazing qualities and they blossom gloriously. There are some abilities given to women that men don’t have and there are others given to men that women don’t have. For relationships to flourish, these several abilities must be recognised and allowed to function. Until a man recognises the female strength, he will be weak in those areas because she was designed to supply what he doesn’t have. A woman is designed to give respect and honour. This is why she so easily adapts to different environments and stimuli. Her ability to function this way

Debunking sexual stereotypes
FamilyFabric
The relationship between males and females is like a jigsaw puzzle. The puzzles themselves don’t make sense until they are connected together. They must be connected in the right way otherwise the whole thing comes crumbling down. The fact that male and female differences have dealt many couples some difficulties isn’t reason to throw out the baby with the bath water. We must be brave enough to deal with the issues at hand and learn to solve problems. Men will always be weak as long as they don’t recognise the strengths of women. The same will happen to women when they fail to recognise the strengths of men. Men and women are equally strong. They only have different strengths. These strengths are in no way inferior or lesser than each other. They
“Buy that pair of earrings, a gift doesn’t have to be expensive, it just has to show you care. Surprise her for dinner sometime, not only during Valentines day. She will always remember such acts, at least that is what I have seen with my wife,” Aldo, who has been married for two years, offers. And what do you as the man receive in return? Aldo says a bucket load of respect and numerous thank you gestures. “Everybody wins!” Further, Wachira advises couples to use the five love languages: Words of appreciation, acts of service quality time, physical touch and gifts. “Kind words and compliments will definitely boost your wife’s mood. Taking out garbage, paying the bills; these will certainly earn marks, even if you forgot one thing on the list.” Letting your partner feel like they are your sounding boards by giving her news or asking her opinion first also makes her feel valued. “When you get a new promotion, instead of calling your mum first give priority to your wife. Imagine how she would feel if she was not among the first people to get the news. However small a matter is, it is part of appreciation,” Wachira adds. Trust is yet another secret to a happy marriage. When you trust your wife, you are opening up your relationship for both of you to be happy. “When you show you trust your wife, she receives the message that you love her. When she sees you being open with her, a woman will interpret it as love. You feel happier too, because you have let her into your world,” Wachira advises. The counsellor’s establishment is that when these languages are spoken fluently, relationships benefit. “Remember, it takes two to tango. Imagine dealing with a miserable wife? Everything in that household becomes chaotic, from the children to the househelp!”
meets a man’s greatest need. A man just doesn’t desire respect, he needs it. It is part of his design as a leader, protector and provider. It actually enables him to lead, protect and provide. His need for respect is at the core of his esteem and affects every area of his life. A wise woman should, therefore, remind her man of his capabilities and should help him maintain his self-confidence. She should understand his value and achievements. A man on the other hand should love his woman by cherishing and caring for her. She was designed to receive love. She doesn’t just desire love, she truly requires it as her core need. As much as a man needs to know that he is respected, a woman needs to know that she is loved.—The writer is a saxophonist and a relationship coach

ou probably grew up with the belief that men are more sexual than women, right? Society also portrays women as victims and men as victors when it comes to sexual relationships. These sexual stereotypes stipulate how men and women should carry themselves in regard to their sexuality: Women are believed to be sexually passive in comparison to their more aggressive male partners. Women are also believed to be disinterested in sex, while men are expected to think about it every ten seconds. While men reflect on their sexual fantasies, women agonise over what to make for dinner. Men who have multiple sexual partners are polygamous but women who bed more than one man are slutty. It is also believed that men
are more impersonal in their sexual encounters while women always get emotionally attached to their partners. Even though these stereotypes don’t always hold true, they do affect relationships. When we buy into these stereotypes, we can become both victims and promoters of attitudes that are not only ignorant, but also self-limiting. Currently, men and women struggle with emotions and self-expression because of stereotypes that encourage men to bottle up their feelings and women to minimise their sexuality. The truth is, men and women are more alike than they are different. They have the same desires and may seek the same kinds of satisfaction with each other. Both of them want love, sex, affection, success, dignity and self-fulfillment. Men, just like women have feelings emotions too.

Battle for farmers’ hearts and minds by John Miner With most of Ontario’s big cash crops engineered with traits added in the laboratory, you might assume the battle for consumers’ hearts and minds over genetically modified foods is over. Think again. After decades of scant attention, the fight over how food is produced for your plate is flaring up again, with some big players in the food industry now declaring genetically modified organisms (GM0s) offlimits. For Ontario farmers, the fallout could be a tough challenge to counter the anti-GMO message and explain to consumers the benefits of tweaking food to fend off pests and diseases, said Terry Daynard, a crop scientist and farmer who lobbied for approval of genetically modified crops in Canada. “The general public doesn’t see any advantage to them if my corn doesn’t have European corn borer and doesn’t fall over, or if I can do a better job of controlling my weeds,” said Daynard, a former University of Guelph professor. The backlash against GMOs recently gathered steam when the world’s two largest retailers — Walmart and Costco — said they’d never sell genetically modified salmon, despite the US food regulator saying the engineered salmon was safe to eat as the regular fish. The GMO salmon are altered to grow on less feed with eggs produced in Prince Edward Island and flown to Panama to be raised. Then, in a break with other food giants, which one public health lawyer said could be “a watershed moment,” Campbell Soup Co. said last week it will start disclosing the presence of genetically engineered ingredients in its products, becoming the first major food company to respond to growing calls for increased transparency on food contents. The world’s largest soup-maker said it supports creating federal legislation for a single mandatory labelling standard for GMO-derived foods and a national standard for non-GMO claims on food packaging. It also said it would withdraw from all efforts by groups opposing such measures. In the US, some large food and beverage companies have spent millions to defeat GMO-labelling ballot measures. But activist groups want more product transparency, especially for foods involving GMOs, amid growing concern about their effects on health and the environment. While genetic modification has received the blessing of government regulators and been widely adopted by North American farmers, industry observers say it’s clear anti-GMO activists are
winning the PR battle. “The biotech industry miserably failed in conveying to the public the factual risks. From a scientific point of view, the risks are minimal, but they are losing the war on perception,” said Sylvain Charlebois, an economics professor and member of the University of Guelph’s Food Institute. “It is one of the most politically charged debates in agriculture,” he said. Charlebois blames the b i o t e c h n o l o g y i n d u s t r y ’s opposition to labelling food products that contain genetically modified ingredients for losing ground in the PR war. Mandatory labelling would actually benefit the biotechnology industry, he argues. “It would demystify the technology. Right now they are being criticized of hiding things,” he said. Lucy Sharratt, coordinator of the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network, a coalition of 18 groups opposed to genetic engineering, said the labelling decision was a blunder. “It was a hugely arrogant step for companies to introduce this new technology into our food system, thinking they could do that without telling customers what was happening,” she said, adding: “This technology needs to be debated and assessed by the public.” But Daynard puts much of the blame for the backlash against the technology on US biotech giant Monsanto. Under former chief executive Robert Shapiro, Monsanto snapped up seed companies and bragged the new world of agriculture would be dominated by his company. But farmers didn’t appreciate that swagger, and made both Monsanto and its genetic engineering a target for groups that don’t like big corporations, said Daynard. His fear is that the success of campaigns against genetic modification will stall future crop enhancements, such as wheat that would resist fusarium blight, a widespread fungus that can make the crop toxic. The alternative to genetic modification is to keep spraying crops with fungicides. Disease-fighting is behind many genetically engineered crops, such as a new potato that Idaho-based JR Simplot Co. developed and plans to market next year. It can resist the same pathogen that caused the devastating Irish potato famine in the 1800s. Another genetic modification that has enormous promise and has drawn huge opposition is Golden Rice, a variety that’s been engineered with a gene from corn to increase vitamin A. A shortage of vitamin A in diets of children in southeast Asia and Africa is blamed for over half a million deaths a year. “I don’t understand how the activists can oppose Golden Rice,” said Daynard . -The London Express

Graduates find a fortune in farming With savings of Sh100,000, five university students are today reaping Pointers • Modern Moguls Farm big from what was once seen as a has employed two venture for the uneducated workers by Milliam Murigi
A
@millymur1 fter their graduation from different colleges, Nelson Maina and his friends began their search for white collar jobs. But to their surprise, with no job experience, no one listened to their story. Maina and his four friends decided to venture into poultry farming in 2006. With a capital of Sh100,000 from their savings, they were ready to start their poultry farm, Modern Moguls Farm at Karogoto, Nyeri County. “We decided to venture into farming because poultry keeoing in Kenya is probably one of the most lucrative business when it is setup and managed properly,” said Maina, the farm manager. At first they decided to keep the commonly kept breeds (broilers and layers) as a way
of trying to penetrate into the market. Six years down the line, Maina attended a poultry farming seminar in Israel and came across another breed and upon his return the group diversified to an exotic breed known as Israel breed which is more profitable compared to others. “This kind of chicken is way bigger than the local Kenyan chicken, weighing and fetching more profits as well. The birds are imported either as eggs and hatched or as live birds,” he said. Although the breed was doing well in Kenya, a problem arose when hens started laying eggs without sitting on them to hatch, forcing them to get an incubator. Without cash to purchase an incubator they applied for a Youth Fund Loan and fortunately they were given money to buy two incubators which can hatch 528 eggs at a go. “The only
• 200: The number of chicks hatched daily at the farm • Sh100,000: Capital that Nelson and his friends used to set up the business • Sh1,500: The minimum cost of a mature chicken • Sh3,000: The maximum cost of a mature chicken challenge we are facing is that since this breed don’t hatch eggs, then we have to use incubator and this means that you have to keep the chicks in a brooder to keep low mortality,” he said. Currently, the farm has employed two workers and more than 200 mature birds. They can hatch 200 chicks daily. Though it sounds as a big investment, Maina revealed that they only sell chicks and not the eggs or mature birds unless they are disposing them. “We dispose our chicken after one-and-a-half to two years depending on the weight of the chicken. Our cock can weigh up to 12 kilogrammes while our hen goes up to eight kilogrammes when well fed,” he said. He revealed that they don’t sell one-day-old chick as the norm in this industry but they sell three-week-old chicks so that mortality rate are minimal. A three-week-old chick goes for Sh200 and a mature chicken goes for between Sh1500 and Sh3,000 de-
pending on the size. He says that even though Kenya has a shortage of poultry farmers, the problem might be there 10 years to come because most people are now taking white meat instead of red meat. The aspect of livestock farming presents one of the finest opportunities for smart thinking entrepreneurs to make good money within the shortest period of time possible. He urges youths who are struggling to make the end meets to apply for youth fund loans and they will be able to boost their business.

hat does your move to France mean for Ukoo Flani Maumau? Ukoo Flani Maumau will always remain my camp. We’re all Ukoo Flani Maumau, no matter where we are. As a group, we had different dreams and aspirations, so it was only natural for us to pursue them separately. And while we’re pursuing our own things, we’re still a team. We try to get together whenever possible. On different occasions, you’ve talked passionately about your 2015 album Position Ya Power. What makes it so special? The album is about finding myself after battling with drug addiction. It was my rebirth and a new dawn. I was happy by the positive reception the album received, especially by my Kenyan fans. Your single Malaika sounds an awful lot like a tribute. Care to comment? During my days as a drug addict, there were some women who never gave up on me. Some were not friends or family, but they would look out for me just to make sure I was okay. They looked after me when I was lost. I never went hungry when they were around. They showed me love that I never thought I could get. They were my angels. Malaika was my gratitude to them. Your novel, Learning English Through Hip-hop got rave reviews. How did the French English Department come to the decision of adopting your book? I pitched my idea Mediart Language Immersion to the department and they were impressed. For a trial to gauge its success, they agency gave me a chance to teach at a school in Paris for a month. To their surprise, kids were so intrigued by the programme’s interactivity and would stick around even after school. The programme will be implemented in all schools next month. A lot has been going on in the local music scene, with the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) being at the heart of the matter. Why do you think local artistes keep crying over the same things when it comes to the body? The problem is, we have given cartels a position of power and they are using it to corrupt the industry. I have been a member of MCSK for almost 14 years. Yet they claim to only have two of my songs on record. Initially, they had denied having any record of my music, but after much pressure, they came up with the two singles. MCSK is weighing the industry down. The body should be disbanded or reconstituted. Otherwise musicians will keep on languishing and slaving for no reason. Last year, there was a hip-hop battle to determine who the king of the game is. Who do you think is supreme? This battle was pointless. It made it look like Kenya has only four hip-hop artistes, yet we have serious rappers out there who’d reign in comparison. It’s

Daddy Owen releases a new song Local gospel artiste, Daddy Owen, has finally released his new song Jumapili. The new hit is written by him and directed by Mhando Brian of Onfon Productions. The singer decided to use a different style compared to his usual Kapungala style. The song talks about how Christians should serve God daily and not become a Sunday Christians. Speaking to Spice Daddy Owen had this to say: “It’s a high time that gospel artistes invest more in writing the word of God rather than just songs that are there in between.” Owen also spoke on his video, which was shot in Longonot. “My video is basic, the simple reason being communicating the word of God. What are your thoughts on Jaguar being named the Nacada ambassador? I’ve got no beef with Jaguar, but this was all a PR move. Nothing groundbreaking has been achieved, but maybe time will change that. As someone who has struggled with drugs, I reached out to him. I shared some tips on how to help addicts. I would have loved to assist, but he made it look like I wanted to pocket handouts. I took a bow. The hardest part of an addict’s life is staying on track after rehab. They need to feel productive. That means giving them alternatives to improve their lives and be resourceful in the society. How has being a dad changed you? Being a parent is beautiful and fulfilling. Slum children use waste to dump poverty
ff slums,” she says. The two slums they are working in have a population of about 100,000 people and over 75 per cent of them are youth and women. The briquettes project is their main project and main source of income. They have partnered with surrounding schools and offices where they get their papers from and with local charcoal dealers who provide them with charcoal dust. “Our raw materials are readily available and we can make 450 pieces of briquettes per day, which are later dried using the sun before they are packaged,” she explains. They package their briquettes in two kilogrammes polythene bags so that they can reach many people in the slums. Each bag goes for Sh50 and they can make up to Sh20,000 every month from briquette sales. Apart from the briquette project the foundation has also adopted other projects such as urban farming (sack gardening), poultry keeping, a mentorship programme and an education centre as a way of getting more income. So far, 200 youth and women are actively involved in the project. Urban farming, which is facing space challenges, is also picking up with 10 households doing it in smallscale. The education centre houses 50 children and about 300 are left out due to lack of accommodation. “We have also started a children’s home where we are accommodating 25 children. We are also supporting 35 children whom we are training on how to make briquettes,” she adds.

eaving a tedious garbage pickers job with one of the private garbage collecting group in Nairobi turned out to be the greatest decision Milcah Muthoni ever made. It opened her eyes to the wealth that lies in waste collection, particularly in recycling papers. She says the decision was driven by tough working conditions, which pushed her into considering turning garbage into a profitable investment. “I am happy that for now I make good money from waste, but I am also happy because I train other women from other counties on how to make briquettes from waste,” she says. After working with Soiya Youth Group for more than five years they were trained on how to make briquettes from waste papers, compost materials and soil. Following the training they started making and selling briquettes, but after five years the group collapsed. “I decided to continue with the project alone because I learnt that briquettes were fetching good money. I wrote a proposal and a donor bought me a briquette-making machine worth Sh10, 000,” she says. She later trained 11 men and women and together they formed Mwamko Foundation, a community
based organisation based in Soweto slums, and Kahawa West in Nairobi, which was registered in 2012. The organisation seeks to empower youth and women and offer services such as rehabilitating drug addicts, environmental management, mentorship, prevention of HIV/Aids in children and addressing genderbased violence. Coming from a poor background, Muthoni always wanted to make sure that other children don’t suffer the way she did. “Mwamko Foundation works with informal settlements in Nairobi County namely Soweto, Kamae and Kiwanja

Celebs chew nails to protect Rhinos Sir Richard Branson is leading a new campaign against the sale of rhino horn that features the Virgin founder, along with Chinese celebrities and global wildlife ambassadors, chewing their nails. The campaign, a series of English and Chinese-language billboards and videos from conservation groups WildAid and the African Wildlife Foundation, aims to highlight how rhino horn is made primarily of keratin, the same protein that makes up human fingernails and hair, which has no medical benefits. In one advert, Sir Richard is shown biting his
nails next to the words: “Keratin. That’s all it is. No different or more a medical remedy than your fingernails. So with a dwindling rhino population, why kill off one of our planet’s greatest species for no reason?” Rhino horn is considered a status symbol in Vietnam and China, where the growth of the middle class has led to an explosion in demand for the horn, which is ground down and used as a traditional medicinal cure and recreational drug. International criminal syndicates are known to charge £60,000 a kilo for an illegal substance that is worth more than gold, but is
actually no different from human fingernails. “Rhino horn’s luxury cache among a privileged few is the root cause of the poaching crisis raging in Africa,” said WildAid chief executive, Peter Knights. “This campaign seeks to deflate rhino horn’s allure and expose it for what it is: fraud.” The most recent official figures show that 749 rhinos had been poached by August 27 last year in South Africa, where most of the animals are concentrated. The rate had further intensified after a record total of 1,215 rhinos were killed in 2014. -The Guardian

Squabbles will cost Raila top seat, Midiwo warns MPs Wambora by Eric Juma bans sale of raw coffee from Embu @PeopleDailyKe
Deputy Minority Leader in the National Assembly Jakoyo Midiwo has cautioned Luo Nyanza MPs against engaging in “unnecessary political spats”. He said public quarrels by MPs in the region was causing disunity and widening gaps among community members, who should instead, be focused on delivering the top seat to
Cord leader Raila Odinga. “Divisions witnessed in Nyanza if not checked may be used by our opponents to widen the gap,” said Midiwo, adding that the legislators must concentrate on their National duties. Midiwo was speaking during the burial of West Uyoma MCA, Mathews Odeny, in Rarieda subcounty. He warned Suba MP John Mbadi and his Rarieda counterpart Nicholas Gumbo to stop their
persistent squabbles for the sake of peace in the party and region. “Your rifts if not stopped will cost Raila the seat. Let’s not go to the media and insult one onother but unite as a family,” he said. He told Mbadi to stop losing focus by concentrating on local politics. “Mbadi, you are a National chairman and we expect you to convince others to support Raila in 2017 not engage in grassroots poll disputes,” he said.

Police shut Siaya church, detain six after fighting Leadership wrangles erupt into chaos after new pastor ejects some members

by Eric Juma and Charles Muasya @PeopleDailyKe
Siaya County Commissioner Joseph Rotich has ordered the immediate closure of Gospel Church of Kenya, Siaya branch, a day after a fight pitting two factions brought proceedings at the church to a halt. Rotich said the church would remain shut until leadership wrangles are resolved to avoid escalation of violence. “We have noted that the leadership crisis has led to disintegration of order as well as raising tensions between the followers of the rival camps,” he said. The violence that saw six people, including a pastor, arrested also left three others nursing injuries at Siaya County referral hospital.

Meanwhile, clerics in Kitui county have asked the government to deal with wayward preachers individually instead of punishing churches collectively. Led by Reverend Samuel Muendo of Mulango AIC and Apostle Julius Nyerere, the preachers said although they support self-regulation, the government should deal only with churches whose leaders are suspect.
“It is true some have used the church to enrich themselves using ‘the seed collection’ which has portrayed the church negatively but what we are telling the government is to deal with such people but not crack the whip on all the churches’’, said Reverend Muendo. He said the church, like other organisations, pays the county governments fees for preaching, advertisements, including bill boards and denying them room to preach on radio not only interferes with freedom of worship but also impedes the preachers from
North Rift elders tell Cord leader to forget their support if he continues war on Rotich by Winstone Chiseremi @Wchiseremi
A group of elders from North Rift has warned Cord leader Raila Odinga against his sustained attacks on Treasury CS Henry Rotich (pictured) over the Eurobond saga. The elders said Raila should forget the support of Kalenjin community in his quest for the country’s top seat in the 2017 general election for allegedly plotting the
downfall of the CS. Led by Simon Murkelda and William Sawe, they asked the former premier to stop
politicising the issue for his own gain ahead of the next polls. “We are very concerned over the sustained attacks spearheaded by the Opposition leader against the Treasury CS and we warn him to stop the war against State officials if he wants to be respected by Kenyans,” said Murkelda. Rotich was among 10 officials whose resignation Cord leader demanded while releasing a list of interested parties in the Eurobond saga recently.

He said the Attorney General should subject the draft religioussociety rules 2015 to public scrutiny so as to come up with a finer draft that does not interfere with the freedom of worship as outlined in the Constitution. “Churches with integrity should work together with the government to root out people who use the church to create wealth. These are thieves who should be treated with all the contempt they deserve’’, said Apostle Nyerere.

Embu Governor Martin Wambora has banned the sale of coffee grown within the county outside of it, saying doing so was sabotaging a processing plant his administration had installed from Brazil. Wambora (pictured) said the coffee factory at Kavutiri in Embu East is complete and will soon start milling to add value to the coffee from the region and asked police to arrest anyone found transporting raw coffee from Embu County for sale to other parts of the country. “We have bought machines from Brazil to process coffee and later added Sh10 million to install other facilities. Why would someone sabotage such an initiative?” he posed.
Neto to fix 210kms of Ndhiwa roads by Noven Owiti @PeopleDailyKe
Ndhiwa is set to get a facelift after area MP Agostino Neto launched the rehabilitation of 210kms of roads. Neto said construction of the roads will be funded through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to the tune of Sh40m. He said the project will involve marumming as well as installation of culverts, a project expected to take two months. The lawmaker said his CDF office will also repair some of the local bridges damaged by the El Nino rains. “The poor state of roads has inflicted a lot of suffering to residents but this will now be a thing of the past,” he said.
Speaker says not party to plans to impeach Akaranga by Enock Amukhale @PeopleDailyKe
Vihiga County Assembly speaker has denied claims of being party to an alleged plot to impeach Governor Moses Akaranga by instigating the formation of an ad hoc committee to probe a Sh2.5 billion debt. Addressing the County Assembly during the tabling of the report on county debt, Daniel Chitwa
said the formation of the committee was mooted by Maragoli Central MCA Abdalla Chogo. The committee report was rejected by the Assembly saying it was aimed at landing Akaranga before the Senate as well as crucify some of the executive members. Akaranga had earlier dismissed the committee report saying it was misleading the public by misrepresenting facts.

Diplomatic row InBrief Senegal President seeks shorter terms
Senegal’s President Macky Sall (pictured) has proposed to cut his own term in office by two years. Changing the president’s mandate from seven to five years is part of several proposals for constitutional reforms which are to be put to a referendum. The president’s office say they are aiming to strengthen democracy. Several African presidents have recently done the opposite - changing constitutions to extend their time in power. The new constitution would not allow a president to run for more than two consecutive terms in office. The BBC’s Nadege Sinarinzi in Dakar says after reducing his term in office, Mr Sall is then expected to put himself forward for re-election in 2017 instead of 2019. - BBC
Tanzania newspaper banned for ‘incitement’
Tanzania has banned a weekly newspaper for inciting violence, including stories on scrapped elections in Zanzibar, the information minister said today. The weekly Kiswahili-language Mawio newspaper “is banned permanently” Minister of Information Nape Nnauye (pictured) said in a statement, with the shutdown applying to both the print and online editions. He said the closure was ordered after the Dar es Salaam-based newspaper received eight warnings to change its reporting, including after it printed articles warning of violence in Zanzibar after elections last year were annulled. - AFP
Musharraf acquitted of rebel leader’s killing
A Pakistani court today acquitted former military ruler Pervez Musharraf over the 2006 killing of a Baloch rebel leader, one of three legal cases he faced after returning from exile, lawyers said. The decision was the first significant ruling in the cases, which include the murder of former leader Benazir Bhutto in 2007 and treason, since Musharraf was indicted in 2015 for the killing of nationalist leader Nawab Akbar Bugti. - AFP
Iran denounces US missiles test sanctions Move prevents 11 entities and individuals linked to the ballistic programme from using America’s banking system Tehran, Monday Iran has denounced new sanctions imposed by the US over its ballistic missile programme. The sanctions had “no legal or moral legitimacy”, a foreign ministry spokesman said. In October, Iran tested a precision-guided ballistic missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead, in defiance of a UN ban. The new sanctions prevent 11 entities and individuals linked to the programme from using the US banking system. Announcing the measures, Adam J Szubin, US acting under-secretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, said: “Iran’s ballistic missile programme poses a significant threat to regional and global security, and it will continue to be subject to international sanctions.” However, Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Hossein Jaber Ansari said today: “Iran’s missile programme has never been designed to be capable of carrying nuclear weapons.” “The US sanctions against Iran’s ballistic missile programme... have no legal or

moral legitimacy,” he said. Ansari added: “America sells tens of billions of dollars of weaponry each year to countries in the region. These weapons are used in war crimes against Palestinian, Lebanese and most recently Yemeni citizens.” Defence Minister Hossein Dehghan told the Fars news agency that the new US sanctions would have no effect. “We will prove it in practice by unveiling new missile achievements,” he said. A UN resolution endorsing the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers calls on Iran to refrain from testing missiles designed to carry nuclear weapons.
Sanctions lifted
The new US move came just a day after sanctions against Iran were lifted over its nuclear programme. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said it had verified that Iran had restricted its sensitive nuclear activities. Four American-Iranians in Iran and seven Iranians in the US were also freed in a prisoner swap deal on the day sanctions were lifted. The US had threatened to impose the missile test sanctions earlier but US sources said they were delayed as Washington did not want to undermine the nuclear deal negotiations - particularly over the prisoner swap. The sanctions were announced only after a plane carrying the released prisoners had left Iran. - BBC
DR Congo to prosecute militia leader Katanga Kinshasa, Monday The Democratic Republic of Congo said it plans to prosecute notorious militia leader Germain Katanga, who had been scheduled to leave prison in Kinshasa today after completing a sentence handed down by the International Criminal Court. “He will not leave” prison, Justice Minister Alexis Thambwe Mwamba

told AFP in an interview today. He said Katanga was implicated “in other cases just as serious” as the one for which he was convicted by the ICC in 2014 t—hat of arming an ethnic militia that carried out a brutal village massacre. One case concerns his alleged role in the killing of nine UN peacekeepers in the violence-torn Ituri region in the northeast of the country in 2005, Thambwe Mwamba said.
Another, which is in the hands of military prosecutors, concerns “contacts” that Katanga “continues to have with other officers who are being prosecuted”. The minister declined to give further details on this second case in order not to violate the confidentiality of the investigation. He said the trial would be “fair” and Katanga would have “access to all the lawyers that he wants to defend himself”. - AFP

Vets raise concerns over animal rights The Kenya Veterinary Association (KVA) has expressed its concern over the high number of livestock dying while under transportation. According to the association, the dead animals are finding their way to some butcheries, posing a serious public health threat. KVA vicechairman Dr Samuel Kahariri said the cases of cruelty towards animals are on the rise across the country. He identified goats and chickens as the most affected, adding that traders transporting animals to various destinations are subjecting them to immense suffering. “Ironically, some of the dead animals find their way to some butcheries, posing a serious public health concern,” said the official. - KIRERA MWITI

MP takes fuel battle to Parliament over cartels Mwaura to table motion seeking to pass benefits of low global prices to consumers by Conrad Onyango @onyangoconrad
The raging debate on high pump prices is headed to Parliament in an attempt to tame cartels out to make a kill at a time global crude oil prices are lowest in 12 years. Nominated Member of Parliament Isaac Mwaura will table a motion to compel the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to make public profits earned by oil marketers in a move that seeks to reduce the huge margins enjoyed by retailers, thereby mitigating fuel costs for households and motorists. The motion—which is slated to be tabled when Parliament resumes in two weeks—will also seek to poke holes in the regulator’s role in protecting interests of consumers as the MP claimed local oil cartels are to blame for last week’s negligible fall in pump prices. “The current global pricing regime does not reflect the true cost of the commodity. If there will be no redress over the next two weeks, we will take the debate to Parliament,” said Mwaura yesterday.
Marginal cuts
Last Thursday, ERC made marginal cuts on the price of petrol by Sh1.42 to Sh88.64 per litre, while that of diesel fell by Sh 1.81 to Sh76.70, sparking consumer anger as the pricing is not in tandem with the low crude oil prices at the global marketplace. Oil prices hit below $28 (Sh2,856) per barrel yesterday with signs of a deeper plunge looming large as Iran said it was ready to pump 500,000 barrels per day after sanctions on its energy products were lifted. United States and the European Union lifted sanctions against Iran last week, which had cut oil exports by about two million barrels per day. Iran’s comeback drove down Brent crude to $27.67 (Sh2,822) a barrel as it pumped more fuel to an oversupplied market. “With Iran coming on steam, we expect prices of crude oil to drop further. But local consumers are yet to feel the impact of the falling prices,” said Mwaura. Fixed costs, which include taxes, levies, distribution costs and mar-
A car being refuelled at a petrol station. Motorists have not felt the impact of lower crude oil prices. INSET: Nominated MP Isaac Mwaura at a press conference in Nairobi yesterday. PHOTOS: SAMUEL KARIUKI, FILE gins amounting to Sh48.15 per litre for petrol, have been blamed for the high retail prices. Government charges petrol Sh32.42, diesel Sh22.83 and kerosene Sh0.45 as taxes. Supplier margins are estimated at Sh11.18 for both petrol and diesel, while kerosene is charged Sh8.89, with Sh4 added as distribution cost. The balance of Sh40.49 remains as profit margin that goes to oil marketers. This is the amount Mwaura’s motion will seek to reduce. “We want to know whether these profits can be passed down to con-
sumers,” said the MP. He claimed oil marketing cartels, some with links to multinational oil companies, are “profiteering” by holding Kenyan consumers hostage.
Global market
“The oil cartel is so powerful that it has entrenched its roots into the Comesa market,” said the MP. While the legislator claims petrol should retail at Sh50 per litre, Consumer Federation of Kenya (Cofek) had projected prices to drop by Sh10 a litre ahead of Thursday’s ERC review to reflect global market trends. “ERC’s price-setting mechanism
has only favoured oil marketers at the expense of consumers and needs to be reviewed,” said Cofek secretary general Stephen Mutoro. ERC director general Joseph Ng’ang’a said consumers are set to enjoy full benefits of the current crude prices from March when fresh oil stocks land in the country. Kenya’s top three oil marketers— Total Kenya, Shell and KenolKobil— had a combined market share of 71.9 per cent by June 2015, according to data from the Petroleum Institute of East Africa. This is a clear indication the three companies are the biggest beneficiaries of current high prices.

State in hasty retreat over GM maize legalisation Press briefing called to announce release of first ever variety called off at eleventh hour under unclear circumstances by George Kebaso @Morarak
Plans by the government to officially announce release of the first ever Genetically Modified (GM) maize variety in Kenya—which would have paved the way for its commercialisation—was yesterday cancelled at the last minute. It was not immediately clear why a press conference called by the National Biosafety Authority (NBA)—the country’s biosafety regulator and that was to be addressed by the Ministry of Agriculture’s top officials—was called off. However, a source intimated to People Daily that the matter was put on hold because of its “sensitivity.” It further emerged that other line ministries such as that of Health, which banned importation of GM products in 2012, called for wider consultations before any announcement is made. This is contrary to an assertion by Deputy President William Ruto in August last year that various government ministries, departments and agencies concerned with biotechnology had already consulted and agreed on the necessary regulations and safety measures to be adhered to.
Bidco targets farmers for raw materials by Seth Onyango @SethManex
Household goods processor, Bidco Africa plans to engage 30,000 farmers to grow corn, sunflower and soya beans to meet its swelling demand for industrial raw materials. The manufacturer will issue binding contracts to farmers, guaranteeing them ready market for their produce. This is set to create employment opportunities to numerous youth and boost agribusiness in the county. Bidco Oil has already partnered with Vision 2030 Youth Entrepreneurs Associates chief executive Edward Githaiga to identify 5,000 youths to produce some of the raw materials. Approval of the Bt maize will pave the way for variety release and registration through the National Performance Trials and eventual delivery to farmers.
The Cabinet was expected to discuss the issue before allowing GMOs in the country—Ruto “Consultations over GMOs have been concluded, and the Cabinet was expected to discuss the issue before allowing GMOs in the country so that we can maximise on agricultural production, improve health services, conserve the environment and basically improve the living standards of our people,” Ruto told a congregation of scientists and policy makers at the annual Bio-Safety Conference. He was, however, categorical the ban on importation of GM products had not been lifted. The insect pest-protected GM maize variety, the Mon810, known worldwide as Bt maize, has been on

trial for close to two decades now. Scientists say Bt maize will help farmers in Kenya increase yields by reducing damage caused by stem borers. Scientists behind the Mon810 variety also say farmers can improve yields while reducing the use of insecticide sprays, thus benefiting the environment. According to the Agricultural Sector Development Strategy (ASDS), Kenyans depend on maize as staple food and every year, millions are threatened by hunger due to a number of constraints including in-
sect pests. Stem borers are particularly known to reduce maize yields by an average of 13 per cent or 400,000 metric tonnes. This is equivalent to the amount of maize imported by Kenya annually that approximately costs the taxpayer an estimated Sh7.2 billion. Scientists from Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation (Kalro) and their partners formally applied to the biosafety regulator for release of GMO maize that has been on trial for commercial production.
Plan to tap beach tourism product offering mooted by Munira Mandano @PeopleDailyKe
The government in partnership with tourism industry players will soon launch beach product improvement initiatives in light of incentives for charter flights to the Kenyan coast. Tourism Cabinet secretary Najib Balala said his ministry will work closely with that of environment,
county governments and the private sector to improve Kenya’s beach product offering. The government has rolled out a Sh1.2 billion Charter Incentive Programme that will see all tourist charters with passengers terminating at Moi International Airport Mombasa and Malindi Airport enjoy landing fee waiver. The charters will also benefit from a $30 (Sh3,00) passenger subsidy per seat filled by international
passengers who disembark in Kenya. Balala said the beach is the leading tourism attraction at the Kenyan Coast, adding that enhancement of water sport activities to provide beach lovers with alternative activities is part of initiatives being put in place to improve the offering on this front. About four years ago, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) initiated a beach rehabilitation programme within Mombasa county.

Farmers now back MP’s bill on coffee earnings by Wangari Njuguna @PeopleDailyKe
Coffee growers have supported the move by Kiharu MP Irungu Kang’ata to introduce a bill that if adopted, will compel the government to set a guaranteed minimum return kitty to cushion them from fluctuating market prices. Drawn from Murang’a, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, Meru and Kisii counties, the farmers under the aegis of the Peasant Coffee Farmers Association of Kenya (PCFAK), said they want t h e g ov e r n ment to set the minimum price of at least Sh200 per kilo. They said in Murang’a yesterday they have for the longest time been receiving meager returns from the produce despite the commodity fetching high prices at the international market. Led by their chairman Peter Minai Wangonya, the farmers said a kilo of Kenyan coffee fetches up to Sh16,000 at the international market and Sh4,000 locally while the farmer gets as little as Sh50 or less for the same. “Coffee farmers have not been getting the deserved returns as very little money trickles down to them despite the good prices in the market,” said Minai.
Bargaining power
He said coffee payments should be made immediately after delivery and the prices made public to avert any underhand dealings. Minai also urged Kenya Planters Cooperative Union and the Coffee Directorate to play their rightful roles in streamlining the sector, failure to which farmers will call for their disbandment. “The two institutions have failed in their mandate to streamline the sector which is now in a shambles,” he said. However, KPCU managing director Joseph Kioko said the millers and marketers are largely to blame for farmers’ woes. He said the two collude to lie to the farmers that their coffee is of poor quality so that they can pay them meagre prices. Kioko said they also delay payments to farmers for up to eight months so that the money can earn them interest. He urged the farmers to unite to champion their rights and boost their bargaining power.
Car dealers on song as 2015 sales rise by 15 per cent by Steve Umidha @steveumidha
Automakers posted a solid 15 per cent sales growth in December, making 2015 one of the best years for the industry in recent history. Kenya Motor Industry Association (KMI) chairperson Rita Kavashe said sales of light commercial trucks and
pick-ups helped push new sales to 19,966 units for the whole year. “The industry grew by 15 per cent last year, a good performance in the industry for most car makers. Looking forward this year, the auto industry, especially for local vehicle assemblers will begin to feel the pressure from the new tax system,” said Kavashe who is also General Motors East Africa
(GMEA) managing director. She tipped the industry to grow at a flat-rate figure this year. GMEA recorded the highest growth of 33 per cent with total sales of 6,479 units against Toyota’s 3,553 units sold during the period under review. GMEA’s Isuzu brands once again outshone Toyota’s Hino brands for the third straight year.

Technology to take over 5m jobs by 2020
More than five million jobs will be lost by 2020 as a result of developments in genetics, artificial intelligence, robotics and other technological change, according to World Economic Forum research. About seven million jobs will be lost and two million gained as a result of technological change in 15 major developed and emerging economies, WEF founder Klaus Schwab and managing board member Richard Samans said in “The Future of Jobs.” The findings are taken from a survey of 15 economies covering about 1.9 billion workers, or about 65 per cent of the world’s total workforce. The blurred lines between physical, digital and biological spheres amount to a Fourth Industrial Revolution, according to the WEF, which will address the idea at its annual meeting of policy-makers, academics and economists in Davos, Switzerland. - BLOOMBERG
Venezuela declares economic emergency
The Venezuelan government has announced a 60-day economic emergency to deal with the country’s worsening crisis. President Nicolas Maduro (pictured) will govern by decree for two months. The edict includes tax increases and puts emergency measures in place to pay for welfare services and food imports. The government’s move came as official figures released by the central bank showed the Venezuelan economy had contracted by 4.5 per cent in the first nine months of 2015. The emergency was declared hours before President Maduro delivered a State of the Nation address to Congress for the first time since his centre-right opponents took control of the legislature. - BBC

Women Fund has loaned out Sh7.3b at grassroots MARGINAL AREAS
At inception almost 10 years ago, the Women Enterprise Fund was touted as the game changer by giving women access to business capital. But what has it achieved so far? People Daily’s NASIBO KABALE spoke to the Women Enterprise Fund Advisory Board chairperson Mumina Bonaya on progress made. Excerpts: QUESTION: How much has the Fund been allocated since inception and how many women have benefitted? ANSWER: Exchequer disbursements were Sh3 billion since inception in 2007 and in the last FY 2014/15 the fund received Sh168 million only. The total disbursement to date stands at Sh7.36 billion, reaching 1,151,645 beneficiaries. This shows that the revolving fund concept has taken root and the women beneficiaries have remained faithful in paying the loans promptly. The printed Budget Estimates for the current 2015/16 financial year is Sh523 million. If this amount is received in full, the fund will reach approximately 200,000 additional women by June. Q. If you are trying to reach the women at the grassroots who have little or no access to information, how do loans trickle down to their level? A. We have sensitisation programmes at grassroots level conducted by our regional staff, mainly the volunteers, who understand the local language. For the visually and speech impaired women, the fund engages translators in case there is need. We place notices in strategic locations; for example, local churches and market places, where our staff create
awareness in barazas jointly organised by local leadership. Awareness creation is also done through vernacular radio stations. Q. It is often perceived that these funds are intertwined with some sort of bureaucracy. How are women able to break that chain of bureaucracy? A. We have simplified the process of women accessing these funds. They just need to apply at the constituency level through the WEF officer on the ground. With the rollout of the laptops to each constituency, the loan details of a particular group can be captured by the officer without the women necessarily having to make their way to the regional offices to have their loan applications processed. To hasten the process further, the loans committee decided to meet once every month and this has greatly improved the turnaround time, and women are able to get their cheques every month. Applicants are also able to send an SMS to a short code service and query the stage of loan processing or loan status. Q. In your assessment, has the WEF created jobs for women and is there a measuring tool to ascertain the number? A. The fund collects and documents success stories from
North Horr - Sh1.8 million · Laisamis - Sh2.3 million · Saku - Sh8.6 million · Moyale - 5.35 million · Isiolo South - Sh7.2 million · Isiolo North - Sh25.3 million · Mandera South - Sh3.85 million · Mandera North - Sh7.35 million
Chairperson of Women Enterprise Fund Mumina Bonaya during the interview with the People Daily in Nairobi. PHOTO: AYUB MUIYURO our beneficiaries. The number of people employed by the women entrepreneurs is evidence that direct jobs are created for women. In addition, these women entrepreneurs source for locally-produced inputs, therefore creating indirect jobs for others. Q. How do you ensure the deserving people get the loans? A. WEF has made sure that our officers are competitively recruited to ensure we get the very best. The loans committee ensures that deserving people and also marginalised constituencies receive the loans—we have managed to focus on areas with low uptake and the marginalised areas to ensure that women from those areas also benefit. Lastly, we have a very robust complaints mechanism if they feel that any officer is marginalising them. Q. What is the impact of WEF and just what trans-
formative effects has it produced? A. We have disbursed Sh7.36 billion to more than one million women, effectively changing their livelihoods. Our success stories indicate that our beneficiaries are better able to provide for their families as a result of their business growth. Q. A recent study revealed that women identified the loan sizes they received and lack of financial management skills as some of the impediments to their business success and growth, with many shying away out of fear of their property being attached to pay back the loans. What are you doing about that? A. The fund has progressive lending cycles that allow our beneficiaries to grow over time. In addition, these lending cycles have been reviewed such that the progression is now up to Sh500,000 per group. It is important to note
· Fafi - Sh3.55 million · Lafey - Sh250,000 · Ijara - Sh11.25 million · Daadab - Sh5 million
that WEF does not require any security for the loans we offer and, therefore, the issue of fear of property being attached doesn’t arise. Borrowers are also taken through an intensive entrepreneurship training before accessing the funds. Q. The fund falls under the Devolution ministry, which has been in the limelight for all the wrong reasons. Can you say that you are clean from all the corruption and how do you stay away from it all? A. It is simply owed to the fact that we stick to the mandate, which is empowering women and we get support from the ministry. It is unfortunate that some negative things have happened but we only have women’s best interest at heart and that is why we remain successful.

Unending Eurobond saga has much to do with misunderstood facts Eurobond. That is one very technical word that has gained common usage in Kenyan lingo faster than the debt paper did. Never mind that most people talking about Eurobond barely know anything about it except, perhaps, its spelling and pronunciation. We all know economics is not a cup of tea for many. While trawling social media, I came across a simple explanation by my friend Gordon Opiyo, a former colleague who studied economics, who uses a common family analogy to make the Eurobond saga easy to understand.
Let’s see if it makes sense. Otieno has three wives, each involved in income-generating activities. Nyar Alego based in Siaya sells Omena. Nyar Asego based in Homa Bay sells Mbuta and Nyar Kano based in Kisumu operates a tea kiosk. They all have accounts in their respective towns, but at the end of every month, they send money to the family account in Nairobi. From that family account, Otieno makes decisions to use the money in various activities such as growing sugarcane, building the plot in Alego, and buying a boda boda motorbike.
We all know economics is not a cup of tea for many
It happens that Nyar Asego gets some loan of Sh250,000 from the Homa Bay Women’s Development Fund. After sorting out an expensive loan taken from the local shylock, she transfers Sh140,000 to the main account in Nairobi. The Sh140,000 is, however, mixed with other monies from Siaya and Kisumu. As Otieno goes on with his hard
work of investing his family income, Nyar Asego’s uncle starts spreading rumours in local bars and funerals that Otieno has squandered all the Sh140,000. In the spirit of accountability, Otieno publishes all the bank transfer details from Homa Bay to Nairobi. He then explains to his uncle that the money is being used as it has been mixed with others, as always happens. In addition, Otieno tells the uncle that there are auditors who routinely check how money is used and any problem will be exposed in the audit report. But uncle doesn’t buy
into that. Instead, he calls barazas everywhere to say Otieno has stolen the Sh140,000. Otieno ignores him and continues to invest, since he suspects malice in his uncle’s claims. That should be easier for noneconomists to digest. Public finance management is not an easy job. It requires transparency in large transactions such as the Eurobond. And therein lies a take-away lesson for National Treasury. The writer is the managing editor of www.businesstoday.co.ke. Email: lmulunda@businesstoday. co.ke

62 worth more than world’s half poor
World’s richest individuals have more money than 50pc of the poorest population The richest one per cent now has as much wealth as the rest of the world combined, according to Oxfam. It uses data from Credit Suisse from October for the report, which urges leaders meeting in Davos this week to take action on inequality. Oxfam also calculated that the richest 62 people in the world had as much wealth as the poorest half of the global population. It criticised the work of lobbyists and the amount of money kept in tax havens. Oxfam predicted that the one per cent would overtake the rest of the world this time last year.
Super-rich
It takes cash and assets worth $68,800 (Sh7 million) to get into the top 10 per cent, and $760,000 (Sh77.5 million) to be in the one per cent. That means that if you own an average house in London without a mortgage, you are probably in the one per cent. The figures carry various caveats, for example, information about the wealth of the super-rich is hard to come by, which Credit Suisse

says means its estimates of the proportion of wealth held by the 10 per cent and the one per cent is “likely to err on the low side”. As a global report, the figures also necessarily include some estimates of levels of wealth in countries from which accurate statistics are not available. Oxfam said that the 62 richest people having as much wealth as the poorest 50 per cent of the population is a remarkable concentration of wealth, given that it would have taken 388 individuals to have the same wealth as the bottom 50 per cent in 2010. “Instead of an economy that works for the prosperity of all, for future generations, and for the planet, we have instead created an economy for the one per cent,” Oxfam’s report says. The trend over the period that Credit Suisse has been carrying out this research has been that the proportion of wealth held by the top one per cent fell gradually from 2000 to 2009 and has risen every year since then. -BBC

El Nino deluge spoils wheat farmers’ party by Peter Leshan @PeopleDailyKe
Thousands of wheat and barley farmers in the 47,000 hectare Mau Zone in Narok county are staring at huge losses because the ongoing heavy rains pounding the region have rendered their farms inaccessible. Farmers, who started harvesting in November last year, have suspended the activity until the rains subside. There are fears that most of the barley may be rendered useless for beer making, forcing farmers to sell it as
livestock feed. “If it doesn’t subside soon, we will make losses running into millions of shillings,” said Erisha Kuluo, a largescale wheat farmer in Enabelbel. Farmers were expecting a bumper harvest of between 25 and 30 bags of wheat each crop per acre. They said good weather prior to the onset of El Nino rains, the use of seeds that are resistant to stem rust and good crop husbandry worked in their favour. Lack of storage facilities and poor roads, however, have contributed to high post-harvest losses.

Rebuilding Utalii Grounds One of Nairobi’s premier grounds of the 1980s and 1990s in major facelift by Charles Thuku @Peoplesport11
To many footballers growing up in Nairobi in the 1980s and 1990s, Utalll Grounds on Thika Road were few that offered them a chance to display their talents. In equal measure, tens if not hundreds came to be associated with the grounds as many lined up for the weekend matches, as one of the approved venues for Nairobi League matches. Like many players of the yester-years, before the Utalii Hotel football ground received a major facelift many footballers who are a product of the facility reminisce the bad old times associated with it, and it offers fond memories as a venue that opened up the world of football.
Former AFC Leopards and Harambee Stars coach James Nandwa was part of the now defunct former Kenyan Premier League (KPL) side Utalii FC squad that used the ground in the 90s despite its poor condition. “The ground was bumpy and we largely used it for training, but there was a break from tradition when we once hosted Shabana in a League match since all the other Football Kenya Federation-registered venues were fully booked,” said Nandwa. Despite the deplorable conditions of the pitch, the Utalii brigade, then under the tutelage of Kenyan legend James Siang’a, won the Kenyan Premier League in 1997 to represent Kenya in the Africa Champions Cup where they exceeded expectations. In his own words, Nandwa reckons that it may have been a different story altogether and that Utalii would have reached far just like Gor Mahia did a decade earlier by clinching the Africa Cup Winners Cup (Mandela Cup) title. “During those days there were several challenges one of which was playing on a bumpy surface, but we persevered and the results were there for all to see,” Although he has not
seen the ongoing rehabilitation work at the Utalii ground, Nandwa described it as good riddance to upcoming players to showcase their skills without fear of sustaining injuries,” “This is very encouraging and I wish to congratulate Mwendwa (Nick, Kariobangi Sharks chairman) for this noble course while calling on other individuals and corporate entities to follow suit by giving back to the community,” said Nandwa who joined Utalii after a successful career with Harambee Stars and another defunct side Kenya Taitex Mills (KTM) as a player. A cursory look at the newlook Utalii ground will tell you its of professional workmanship. The lush-green grass surface, which is inviting to visitors has been sprinkled with manure and sand and is easily one of the best in the country today, perhaps comparable to that of that of another private facility in Mumias Sports Complex. The first phase was having the surface have high-quality top soil and having new grass planted after which was fitting of under-ground sprinklers where water from the institution is collected in a reservoir for use on the pitch irrigation system.
Mwendwa put the figure to complete the renovation at Sh20 million and another interesting aspect in the project is the construction of a perimeter fence as well as terraces which will accommodate 5,000 fans, making it the second biggest in Nairobi after the City Stadium which holds a capac-
ity of 15,000 fans. “The terraces will be put up in the expansive northern side of the facility next to Mathare Area 4 Estate, complete with changing rooms, toilet cubicles and shower compartments and the architects will give further impending developments,” said Mwendwa.

Gymkhana raid Sikh Union in NPCA T20 tourney tie by Barry Silah @obel_barry
Nairobi Gymkhana beat neighbours’ Sikh Union by 57 runs at their Parklands backyard, as the Nairobi Province Cricket Association (NPCA) Twenty20 League entered second week. The home team’s Irfan Karim’s aggressive hitting ensured three boundaries plus a further three sixes off 46 ball deliveries in the morning innings. Gymkhana’s 164/6 haul
was shared between by opening innings pair of Karim and Karan Kaul (21) who together shored in 50 runs for the second wicket. National team reserve player Kavi Dosaja (7) weighed in to his bit best but it was inadequate as he departed off quickly. Lucas Oluoch’s double fours and two sixes ensured the middle order held firm while veteran Thomas Odoyo added 23 runs to his name. In a rather meek response,
Sikh Union lost wickets by the count and thus the opposition’s giant scoreline buried them. Umar Ehsan was the highest scorer with 26 off 23 balls followed by Gurdeep Singh on 16 including four boundaries. Elsewhere, Swamibapa sent hosts and minnows Ruaraka to the daggers with a four-wicket rout at the Ruaraka Sports Club in the mild afternoon weather. Even after their innings were downsized to 17 overs, the home team managed a score of 8/88. The brisk pair-
ing of Rajendra Mapani(25) and Chandresh Hirani (20) conjured a 47-run return in the opening for Ruaraka but Swamibapa came alive with brilliant display by siblings Nehemiah Odhiambo (24) and James Ngoche (3/18) respectively atoning for the earlier shake up by last year’s league runners-up. The duo collectively unleashed five overs to silence and sweep the hosts emphatically.

Sawoyo timed 29:28 in a photo finish with third placed Josphat Kipng’eno crossing the finish line with an identical time. Kimitei said after the race, “The course was hard for
me. It was full of corners and many barriers but I am happy that I won though at a close range. “The tough course is challenging but good mainly for training and when I will go to Nairobi, this will be my good training ground,” said Kimitei who trains in Iten. In the 8km senior women, 25-year-old Cherotich was placed second at the inaugural Chebara Dam cross country said the course was good for her together with the weather which favoured her. “The weather was good to me, as I did not have difficulties in breathing like other races where I struggled in breathing,” said Cherotich. Cherotich who finished third at Baringo 10km, said that she wants to follow her training programme to the later to ensure that she wins the next meeting at Uhuru Gardens, Nairobi. Cherotich stopped the timer in 27:52 as local cross country runner Linah Cheruto returned second timing 28:03 ahead of Emily Chepkirui who completed the podium in 28:05.

Djokovic reached all four Grand Slam finals, winning three, last season following the birth of his son, Stefan, in October 2014. “Darling, I guess we’ve got to make more babies,” he said, presumably referring to his wife, after his first-round win over Chung Hyeon on Monday.“I’m probably going to get criticised for what I said now,”the Serb added sheepishly. Wozniacki crashes out of Aussie Open
DEFEAT: Furious former world number one Caroline Wozniacki crashed out of the Australian Open at the first hurdle yesterday and admitted she had no one but herself to blame. The Dane, who remains one of the most marketable players in tennis despite never winning a major in 35 attempts, tossed away a one-set lead against 76th-ranked Kazakh Yulia Putintseva. “I would say it’s a pretty shitty start to the season. It wasn’t a pretty first set but I got it done and really should have closed it off in two,” Wozniacki told a press conference. She romped through the first set against Putintseva but as the Kazakh’s confidence grew, Wozniacki struggled to cope with her baseline game and went down 1-6, 7-6 (7/3), 6-4 in 3hrs 12 mins. -AFP

Match fixing storm Djokovic reveals Sh16 million bribe as leaked files expose shocking tennis corruption scandal Melbourne, Monday @Peoplesports11
Novak Djokovic has spoken of the time he was offered money to fix a tennis match after bombshell revelations about corruption in the sport emerged. The world number one spoke out after secret files said to expose evidence of top-level match fixing— including the rigging of three matches at Wimbledon—came to light. A string of Grand Slam winners, none of whom have yet been named, were reportedly allowed to continue their careers despite suspicions being repeatedly raised that they had thrown matches. The group of corrupt players is said to include 16 who have ranked in the Top 50 over the last decade. Djokovic instantly rejected the bribe made to him 10 years ago and has denounced the practice as a “crime in sport”. Roger Federer, who once dominated the sport, added: “I would love to hear names. Then at least it’s concrete stuff and you can actually debate about it. Was it the player? Was it the support team? Who was it?... It’s nonsense to answer something that is
pure speculation.” Djokovic has previously claimed he was offered £110,000 (Sh16 million) to lose a first-round match in St Petersburg but says the bribe was turned down before it even reached him. “I was not approached d i r e c t l y,” D j o k o v i c said, adding: “I was approached through people that were working with me at that time, that were with my team. Of course, we threw it away right away. It didn’t even get to me, there was nothing out of it.” Djokovic added: “It made me feel terrible because I don’t want to be in any way linked to this, somebody may call it an opportunity. For me, it’s an act of bad sportsmanship, a crime in sport honestly.” “I don’t support it. I think there is no room for it in any sport, especially in tennis,” said Djokovic. Djokovic, however, insists he is not aware of any match-fixing at the top level of the game. “From my knowledge and information about match-fixing or anything similar, there is nothing happening on the top level, as far as I know,” Djokovic said. -Dailymail

THE ONE WHO GOT CAUGHT -Austrian Daniel Kollerer remains the most high-ranking tennis player banned for match-fixing. -Kollerer, who reached a career-high 55th in 2009, was found guilty in 2011 of three violations of anti-corruption rules, including “contriving or attempting to contrive the outcome of an event.” -The violations occurred between October 2009 and July 2010. Kollerer appealed his life ban but it was upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
VICTORY: Grand Slam record-holder Roger Federer gave himself a confidence boost in taking just 72 minutes to win his opening match at the Australian Open, breezing past Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili in straight sets yesterday. The Swiss third seed wasted little time in disposing of the Georgian 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 in a night match on Rod Laver Arena to set up a second round meeting with practice partner Aleksandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine. The 17-time Grand Slam champion was in a different class to his 117th-ranked opponent and showcased his full arsenal of shots against the bemused Basilashvili in their first meeting. “That was a good match. I’m really pleased how I was able to play,” Federer said. -AFP

Tejas, Rajveer victorious in Autocross season-opener by Rodgers Ndegwa @NdegwaRodger
The opening round of the 2016 Kenya National Autocross championship came to a dramatic close at the Champagne Park in Kipeto on Sunday with 13-year-old rising star Rajveer Thethy and Tejas Hirani winning their respective race categories. The Vintage Club organised round was Tejas’ last race in Kenya this season in the run up to his 2014 RX Lites Winter and World Rallycross Championship campaigns. Rajveer who has been touted as motorsports’s next Hirani won the Junior Non Turbo Class in a blindingly fast and chopped-
up Daewoo Cielo buggy built for him buy his dad who is former KNRC 2WD Champion Charan Thethty. “The car handled really well. I enjoyed the straights and corners which were quite technical. I hope to improve on my driving lines in a bid to end the season on a high,” said Thethy. Tejas who was among the special guests at Friday’s Soya Awards said: “It’s always amazing to sign off your home championship in style but quite emotional when you know that you will compete with your home not meet your regular opponents in the season. I am not defending my title this season as I will be heading to Sweden this week,” he said: He added: “I will return to
Kenya in April but will still be fighting for honours in the 2016 FIA World RX Lites Rallycross championship. I wish to thank the Kenyan motorsports family and the media for their unswerving support. I really promise to give it my best shot in Europe.” Sunday’s season opening round saw three-time former KNRC champion Azar Anwar win the 4WD Turbo class which is a category for rally cars. Second and third in 4WD Turbo class were Rehan Shah and Don Smith. The Vintage and Classic Car Club of Kenya organised round turned out to be an upset galore with Imran Hakada vanquishing champion Shalien Mughal in the 2WD Turbo class.

AC Milan sue Yaffa for claiming to be 19, but is actually 28 Milan, Monday An insane story got traction yesterday, revealing how AC Milan were duped by Zambian footballer Yusupha Yaffa into believing he was much younger than he actually was. Yaffa was on the books at the San Siro after he was signed by the Rossoneri in 2013. The African forward was drafted into Milan’s youth setup, while he went on to become a regular for the Milan U19 side. There was only one problem, however. Yaffa, while claiming to be 19, was actually 28! Yusupha Yaffa is currently on the
books of German side MSV Duisburg, however one suspects that deal could come to a rapid end. According to reports, Yaffa has now been summoned to court in Italy by AC Milan for fraud. Should the trial come to pass, it will be interesting to find out the details of how the footballer managed to dupe one of the biggest football clubs in the world about his age. It should also be
pointed out that the revelations about Yaffa’s true age arose due to social media. Apparently things started going awry for the Zambian when old schoolmates realised he’d doctored his age on his Facebook account, and it wasn’t long before people started talking about the footballer’s alleged fraud. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Yaffa claims he lost his documents on a number
of occasions, and when he arrived at the immigration office in 2009 in Italy, he claimed he was born on the 31st of December 1996, instead of the 14th of November 1987. It’s not the first time that Yaffa has found himself dealing with the law. In January 2015, soon after moving to Frankfurt, he was accused of raping a girl and was arrested. Gazzetta also report that while Yaffa protests his innocence, during his trial a number of former trainers and coaches from Milan will be present, including Filippo Inzaghi. -YAHOO
Bollo breaks duck Royal wins first Sigona Bowl title to set pace for Goty challenge by James Waindi

Selected Sigona Bowl results: 1. Kenneth Bollo 223 (74, 71, 78) won on play-off 2. Sujan Shah 223 (79, 71, 73) 3. Jay Sandhu 225 (75, 76, 74) 4. Mike Kisia 227 (73, 79, 75) 5. High flying international amateur golfer Kenneth Bollo (pictured) at the weekend broke the jinx to win his maiden Sigona Bowl title at the par 72 course after a nerve cracking sudden death play-off against home player Sujan Shah on the 18th hole. It was a bright start for the player who finished a close second at last season’s Golfer Of The Year (GOTY) standings, given that Sigona Bowl is the season opener, the first event in the Goty series. A poor final day round of 78 gross saw Bollo who plays off scratch, tied with Shah on a total score of 223 after three rounds and the winner had to be decided through a sudden
death shoot-out on the final hole just near the club house. He sunk a birdie to win the contest. “Today I played bad golf because the rains affected my game but all in all I’m happy to have won the title to set the pace for the remaining tournaments. It a big victory for me given that during the same tournament last year I finished 10th,” said Bollo who is a member of Royal Nairobi Golf Club. Bollo on the final day dropped shots on holes two, four, nine and 10 then had a double-bogey on hole 17. He had, however, enjoyed good golf in the first two rounds, playing 74 gross in the first round before posting one under par 71 in the second round where he sunk six birdies. “ I now want to shift my focus to the second Goty event, the Mount Kenya Championships slated for Nyeri Golf Club on February 6 and 7. The ongoing constructions at my club Royal have affected my game, but I will have to look for a way of dealing with that to ensure that my form remains high,” Bollo said. Shah posted 79 gross in the first round, 71 gross in the second round and 73 gross in the third and final round. Jay Sandhu also of Royal was third on a total of 225 gross (75, 76, 74), while Mike Kisia of Vet Lab was fourth on 227 gross (73, 79, 74) and John Ndichu tied with Alfred Nandwa, M. Kanjumba, Dennis Saikwa, S. Njoroge and reigning Goty champion John Karichu on 229 gross.

SA star Cele dies as car plunges into river JOHANESBURG: South African Premier League footballer Mondli Cele died Sunday after the car he was a passenger in plunged into a river near eastern city Pietermaritzburg. The tragedy occurred a few hours after the 27-year-old scored for Maritzburg United in a 3-3 Premiership thriller against famed Soweto club Orlando Pirates. Cele and another passenger died when the driver lost control of the car, a provincial transport department spokesman said. A third passenger survived. “His character on and off the field was impeccable,” said Maritzburg chairman Farook Kadodia, referring to 27-year-old midfielder Cele. Premier Soccer League spokesman Lux September said: “Mondli scored a beautiful goal and it was to be his last celebration.” -AFP
Chelsea eyeing Barca starlet Xavi Simons
BARCELONA: Chelsea are continuing to monitor the progress of 12-year-old Barcelona starlet Xavi Simons, having first attempted to sign the youngster in 2014. Xavi’s father, Regillio, played for a number of teams in the Dutch Eredivisie across his own career as a professional footballer, and it appears some of that talent has been passed on to his son. A midfielder with an eye-catching head of blonde hair, Xavi impressed in the recent La Liga Promises youth tournament—considered by many to be a reliable shop window for future talent. On Chelsea’s interest, Regillio is coy:“We have spoken to Chelsea and you know it’s going to be good money at Chelsea. Agents approach me to say they are working for English clubs or Spanish clubs. It can’t touch me. I’m not someone who will be starry-eyed. -AFP
Hayatou gives up CAF election duties
CAIRO: FIFA’s acting president Issa Hayatou has given up some of his powers as Confederation of African Football (CAF) leader ahead of the increasingly controversial election campaign to head football’s world body. Hayatou will leave CAF’s handling of the FIFA election and relations with other regional confederations to his two vice presidents, according to an official statement. CAF decided the move on Saturday, a day after FIFA presidential contender Prince Ali bin al Hussein made a complaint over an accord made by the CAF and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). CAF officials denied there was a link however. “The president, in agreement with the executive committee, just wants to exclusively wear his FIFA hat in handling the election for which the final phase will start on January 26 with the final list of candidates,”said a CAF spokesman Junior Binyam. -AFP

Most Kenyan footballers plying their trades in foreign countries featured for their respective sides during a weekend that was characterised by a glut of goals. But the most successful of the lot was Harambee Stars sweeper Brian Mandela (pictured) who found the back of the net as his team Maritzburg which plays in the South African league lost a comfortable lead to draw 3-3 with pre-match favourites Orlando

Pirates. The uncompromising Maritzburg went ahead inside nine minutes from the start through Mondli Celle before Rusike cushioned the lead in the 31st minute. Seven minutes later, Mandela made it three goals for Maritzburg but their defence went to slumber, giving leeway for the resurgent Buccaneers to reply through Rakhale (38th minute), Thabo Matlaba (53rd minute) and Kenmit Erastus (79th minute). In Belgium, Johanna Omollo clocked only 15 minutes for Royal Antwerp in the team’s 2-1 win over Geel

Saint-Etienne reignited their quest for European football with a 1-0 win over bitter rivals Lyon in Sunday’s feisty RhoneAlpes derby, while Marseille continued their impressive away form in Ligue 1 with a 3-1 victory at Caen. Norway striker Alexander Soderlund marked his home debut with the decisive goal 14 minutes from time at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard to leave Saint-Etienne just two points off the Champions League places. For Lyon, who exited the League Cup in midweek following a 2-1 defeat at holders Paris Saint-Germain, this latest loss simply yielded another disappointment in a season full of setbacks. “We had a 10-second lapse of concentration for which we paid dearly,” rued Lyon coach Bruno Genesio. “We conceded a goal from out of nothing. It’s really disappointing. “We were up against a goalkeeper who made saves at key moments. I think we also lacked aggression in front of goal, we could’ve come back at the end if we’d been a bit more adventurous.” Both sides had entered Sunday’s clash level on 29 points and looking to keep in touch with the European places, and it was Lyon who largely bossed the first -half. On-loan striker Jean-Christophe Bahebeck tried to catch out Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes with an early free-
at Bosuil Stadium. Omollo came in for Stallone Limmbombe in the 75th minute with Antwerp’s Belgian coach David Gevaert saying his late introduction was because the Kenyan, who had started in 13 out of 18 games this season, was not a hundred percent fit. “We have a very strong core and then you sometimes have to make decisions,” said Gavaert on Antwerps supporters’ website. Antwerp, the oldest club in Belgium, will next play White Star Bruxelles at the Edmonds Matchtens Stadium on January 23.
kick, but the visitors were on top after that as Stephane Ruffier twice thwarted Rachid Ghezzal, the second stop a stunning low save just before the break. Ruffier then palmed away a Clement Grenier free-kick after half-time, before the crossbar came to Saint-Etienne’s rescue as Ghezzal’s cross was diverted towards his own goal by Kevin Theophile-Catherine. But it was the hosts who made the breakthrough on 76 minutes when a stray pass from Corentin Tolisso was pounced upon by Kevin Monnet-Paquet, who slipped in Soderlund for the Norwegian to notch his first goal for his new club. Earlier, Marseille snapped a four-match winless run in the league as they claimed a fifth victory in six away games. -AFP

Record-setting Higuain firing Napoli’s title charge
MILAN: Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri hailed Gonzalo Higuain as “the top striker in the world” but says the Argentinian can do more on his record-setting run towards Serie A’s top scorer’s award. “If he was a little more aggressive when going to the net, he’d score a lot more. But he’s still the top striker in the world right now,” Sarri said after Napoli moved two points clear of Juventus and four ahead of Inter Milan at the top of Serie A thanks to a 3-1 win against Sassuolo on Saturday. Higuain, who joined Napoli in time for the 2013 season after six seasons at Real Madrid, finished the previous two Serie A seasons with a tally of 18 goals (2015) and 17 (2014). Yet, in his first game of the second half of the season on Saturday,‘Pipito’hit his fifth brace from his last seven games to take his goals tally to 20 from 20 league games. -AFP

Across all of Europe’s top leagues, only the Barcelona pair of Luis Suarez and Neymar have combined for more goals than Arsenal’s dynamic duo of Olivier Giroud and Mesut Ozil this season. Most experts would agree Ozil and Giroud have been Arsenal’s key attacking players this season. However, while the German No10 is universally adored at The Emirates, some Gooners (presumably jealous of his handsomeness) still refuse to give t h e i r d re a m y French striker the love he deser ves. This should help shut those people up. In terms of combining for goals, only one partnership in all of Europe has been more effective than Arsenal’s dynamic duo this season. Ozil has provided the assist for six of Giroud’s goals this season, while Giroud has returned the favour
for one of Ozil’s goals. That means the two of them have paired up for seven different goals—and only the absurd combination of Barcelona’s Suarez and Neymar can beat that. Neymar has set up five Suarez goals; Suarez has created four of Neymar’s. No real shame in being outgunned by those two, is there? Meanwhile, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger hopes playmaker Ozil will be fit to face Chelsea after the German was forced to miss Sunday’s goalless draw at Stoke with a foot injury. Ozil is well clear at the top of the Premier League’s ‘assists’ charts with 16, compared to nine for his nearest challenger, Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne. And Wenger hopes the 27-year-old will overcome the injury in order to face the struggling Premier League champions at the Emirates Stadium next weekend after conceding he was missed during a stalemate in the Potteries. “There is no team in the world that wouldn’t miss Ozil,” Wenger said. “We are used to having him there. If we had Mesut, it would have been a different game (against Stoke).” “Ozil has an inflammation of the foot. On Saturday morning he was not very well and he was already not 100 percent at Liverpool,” the veteran French boss added. -Agencies
