BRIEFLY Historic redoubt ‘under attack’ Damage is being caused to the banks of the historic Alexandra East Redoubt. It is thought the damage has been caused by children sliding or riding down the banks. Waipa Heritage Council has been alerted and asked to speed up planned signage and planting, along with remedial work. The banks being damaged are to the south of the lookout point. Damage to an archaeological site can bring fine of up to $40,000.

Sky the limit Christmas came early for 114 community and charitable groups in the Waikato who received over $480,000 in the third round of Skycity Hamilton Community Trust grants. Locally, Te Awamutu Brass received $8,500 towards replacing an ageing tuba, Te Awamutu Public Relations $3,966 for Christmas lights as part of Light Up Te Awamutu and the World Association of Kick Boxing Organisation headquarters (Te Awamutu) received $3,302 towards team tracksuits and uniforms for competing at the World Championships in Hungary.

Sharp shooters Te Awamutu, Cambridge and Otorohanga fullbore rifle members hosted the final trials to select the New Zealand Commonwealth Games team. Six of the 12 finalists competed at the Otorohanga Rifle Club range on Awatane Road, Kio Kio, while the other half dozen did likewise at ranges around the country. They shot off over 300, 500 and 600 yard targets on Saturday, followed by 900 and 1000 yard targets on Sunday. Form shown at the last month’s Oceania Games competition in Australia was also taken into account by the national selectors. The two shooters to represent New Zealand in Melbourne are Brian Carter (Te Puke) and John Snowden (Ashburton), who were first and second overall at the trials. Mike Collings (Te Puke) is the reserve.

Holly conquers her fear By Cathy Asplin Most people get nervous at the thought of speaking in front of others, but for Ohaupo student Holly Walmsley the fear of public speaking was terrifying. “I have never had confidence in speaking - or in myself. “Even the thought of speaking made me sick. When I was called on to do a class speech I started crying straight away.” Class teacher Gene Bartlett recognised that Holly had a real problem and called on Val Millington to help. “I started going to Mrs Millington every day to build my confidence. Initially I couldn’t even read my speech to her, but eventually I did, then I built up the number of people I could speak to.” When it came time to read her speech about less fortunate children in Uganda, Holly again froze in front of the class. “I remembered how I felt when I first stood up there - my stomach started to hurt and I started to cry, so I ran to the toilets.” When she returned Mrs Millington asked her to focus on the children she wanted to help, rather than on her own fear. She suggested they read Holly’s speech together as the class had been waiting for some time. “Eventually I took the speech notes off her. It took me 20 minutes to get started, but I did it in the end.” Holly’s speech outlined how her family sponsored a child and explained that many children in Uganda do not have any schooling and certainly don’t have any Christmas presents. “We don’t realise how fortunate we really are here in New Zealand.” Holly’s bravery in presenting her speech and her desire to help others struck a chord with her classmates, who knew how difficult it was for her to speak publicly. They too wanted to help the children in

OHAUPO pupil Holly Walmsley (left) with a gift made as part of her project - which was supported by her classmates, Val Millington and teacher Gene Bartlett (right rear) and benefited Te Awamutu Women’s Refuge (two representatives centre rear). Uganda. “But Mrs Milligan pointed out that there were less fortunate people in our own community who we could help.” This got Holly thinking of ways they could help. She enlisted the help of her classmates and wrote to their parents for support with her idea. “We got into groups and filled wrapped boxes with gifts like toys, jewellery, make-up and games. “After hearing about different charities we finally voted who should get these boxes - we

decided it should be the Women’s Refuge in Te Awamutu.” Representatives of the Te Awamutu Women’s Refuge visited Ohaupo school earlier this week They were met by a smiling Holly Walmsley who read out a speech, outlining the story of her Christmas project to the visitors, teachers and classmates. It was a speech that would have made Holly physically sick less than a year ago and shows what great strides she has made. It also clearly demonstrates how you can benefit through a desire to help others.

Carbon tax to inflate costs

MP SHANE ARDERN hopes protests against the carbon tax will be as successful as those against the flatulence tax last year, during which he drove Myrtle the tractor up the steps of Parliament.

Labour’s carbon tax will cost TaranakiKing Country Electorate $72 million says local MP Shane Ardern. This month the National Party launched a campaign to defeat the carbon tax that it is estimated will see all New Zealanders pay six cents more per litre of petrol and seven cents per litre more for diesel, 6% more for electricity, 7% more for gas and 1.3% more for groceries. “New Zealand families should not have to pay this latest tax grab from Labour,” says National Party leader Don Brash. “The carbon tax will increase the cost of living, undermine the competitiveness of business and achieve nothing for the environment. “Labour has tried to disguise the carbon tax as environmentally friendly when it is just another excuse for Dr Cullen to get his sticky fingers into the pockets of hardworking New Zealanders.”

He says New Zealand is the only country in the world to impose a carbon tax, despite our emissions amounting to just 0.4% of the global total. There is no evidence to suggest the carbon tax will reduce emissions. “National’s campaign is about ensuring the carbon tax suffers the same fate as Labour’s infamous fart tax. “National has strong allies in its opposition to this tax in organisations like Grey Power, Business New Zealand, Treasury and Federated Farmers. We will also be holding New Zealand First and United Future to their election promises to oppose the tax,” Dr Brash says. The campaign involves thousands of postcards being distributed to households, a petition available at petrol stations (including locally) and a series of regional and industry visits by National MPs.

Following the meeting with the Minister, the Bains met with Police and Army personnel, including Deputy Commissioner Steve Long and Army head, Major General Jerry Materpare. The family raised concerns about the findings of a recent Police investigation into Police handling of the 1981 shooting and also discussed the Army’s with holding of certain information from the

The family met with the Phil Goff, Minister of Defence in his beehive office. Shane Ardern accompanied the Bains and members from Crown Law and Defence Department were also present. “We had an hour and half meeting with Mr Goff and in general, things went pretty well,” Murray Bain told the Courier. “Mr Goff had obviously been well briefed and displayed a good knowledge of events from 1981 as well as current. Drivers urged to take care

Christmas decorations much improved

School holidays and the excitement of Christmas are almost upon us. There will be children out shopping, going to the library, the pools and the parks. My plea to all drivers is to constantly watch our for children who are walking and cycling. Every time a driver crosses a footpath or reverses out of a driveway, please look both ways before going out onto the road. From my experience as an adult pedestrian, many drivers fail to look both ways.

First I’d like to say what an improvement on last year’s Christmas decorations in town. But the pathetic Christmas tree couldn’t we have a real one? The gentleman who said the tree obstructed his view of traffic should get his eyes tested - I had no problem seeing traffic coming from the right. I think if Te Awamutu brought back the Midnight Madness after the Christmas parade it would keep the Christmas Spirit going longer. The town was dead by four o’clock. P. N. MCKINNEY

They look to the right to check for traffic and then it’s foot down and go. What about the pedestrian walking along to your left? “Oops didn’t see you at all.” Reason being the driver never took a split second to look to the left. If you are a pedestrian, look both ways before crossing the road. If you are a driver, look both ways before crossing the footpath. Quite simple really. Please don’t be one of those people who forget to do it. VAL JONES

Bye Jude: What a blast from past as past members joined the current students in heartfelt song. As many or more past music students not involved in choir, but paying tribute to Mrs Page, were in the crowd. Afterwards it was like a school reunion. It was a fitting finale to what had been a wonderful concert. Mrs Page had place of honour in her leather lounger and drew names from the hat, firstly of current high performing NCEA music students and then of past student, who performed solo spots. The current Flying Start, Senior Band and Senior Jazz added to the occasion. Many of the students who had left told of how the music department and Mrs Page had given them inspiration and confidence through music. It was a room filled with love and warmth, and no-one wanted it to stop.

GUEST OF HONOUR: Retiring vocal tutor Judy Page had pride of place for Monday night’s ‘Bye Jude’ 349053AD concert.

BACK FOR JUDE: Clockwise from left - Cameron Olsen and Kelly Tauroa, Laura Quin, Regan Reti, Alasdair Laws and Laurel Hungerford.

By Dean Taylor I had the honour being MC at this year’s final Te Awamutu College Music Department Concert, which doubled as a farewell to retiring vocal tutor Judy Page. It was an honour because in my early days of teaching I worked with Mrs Page at Te Awamutu Intermediate and watched as she and George Brooks came to Te Awamutu College and developed the music department that has helped make our high school the success that it is. Mrs Page is a specialist vocal tutor, but her contribution to the department over 18 years cannot be underestimated. Bye Jude, the concert, attracted friends, family, supporters and heaps of past pupils as a mark of respect. The Flying Start choir which sang the finale of ‘Flying Start’, ‘Hey Jude’ and ‘May the Road Rise to Meet You’ tripled in size

Final Issues for 2005 Monday, December 19 Display deadline will be 4pm Thursday, December 15 Classified deadline will be 12noon Friday, December 16

Police, security and Council staff are amazed vandals managed to graffiti a huge portion of the skatebowl in broad daylight without anyone reporting the incident. The offence occurred between 8am and 12.30pm on Tuesday and probably involved more than one offender as there were three different paints and several styles of graffiti in the bowl (example right). ble Richard Hurrell says much of the graffiti was highly offensive and obscene, and visible from Rewi Street, which is a busy part of town. He says it is important that if anyone saw anything suspicious at the bowl at that time, then they should contact him. Mr Hurrell reminds the public that everyone loses when this type of offence is committed and that they should report such activity at the time if

Ruth Dyson, the new Minister of Labour has promised to “fine tune the Employment Relations Act”. Ruth was a union leader before becoming a Member of Parliament. She has obviously sympathetically read the Council of Trade Union’s agenda for the Government they worked so hard to return for a third term. The CTU will be looking for ‘pay back’ By Chamber of by insisting on, guess what, ‘a fine tuning of Commerce executive the ERA’. officer Michael Cox. The guts of their wish list urges this Labour Government to address the following; the bracketed comments are mine: ● The minimum wage (pushing up prices of basics?) ● Vulnerable workers (those who don’t belong to a union should be made to?) ● Under funding and low wages paid in the age care and other sectors. ● Redundancy laws (cheaper to keep non performers on?) ● Responsible contractor policy. (Reducing contracting-out and the consumer benefits that flow?) ● Work – life balance. (Less work, same pay and more life?) ● Paid parental leave. (More? Especially for Dad?) ● Portability of entitlements. (Same pay in Te Awamutu as in Auckland, despite cost differences?) ● Flexible working hours. (Statutory right for workers with dependents to demand flexible hours?) For members of this organisation all of these measures will result in lower profits, or increased prices. In the long term increased prices just negate any benefits workers may, in the short term, receive from these measures. That’s how inflationary cycles begin.

they see it. He says it is important perpetrators are identified and apprehended as a deterrent to others. Waipa District Council had the bowl waterblasted on Tuesday afternoon, so far at a cost of about $400 to ratepayers. Senior Sergeant David Simes is amazed at the prevalence of this type of offending in Te Awamutu. He says property

damage such as smashing letterboxes, signs and windows, plus graffiti and other vandalism are not the minor and victimless crimes people often think they are. Mr Simes is stumped as to why Te Awamutu has such a high number of these acts, but says Police are keen to stamp it out and welcome any reports that would assist them. Te Awamutu Police number is 872 0100.

Pakistan relief heats up As winter takes hold in the mountains of Pakistan - with night temperatures falling to -14C World Vision is continuing its relief efforts, which last week extended to include food distribution to more than 11,000 people. World Vision New Zealand’s donations are nearing $1 million for the earthquake appeal, as funds continue to arrive. As part of the partnership between World Vision and World Food Programme (WFP), food packages including wheat flour, pulses (seeds), vegetable oil, biscuits and dates were handed out to more than 1,800 households. The food was just the latest step in World Vision’s operations in the devastated region, which have included non-food distribution and the establishment of Child-Friendly Spaces (CFS). More than 500 children are regularly using the seven CFS, where they find safety, counselling and a chance to play. Winterising these seven CFS tents – and the two that are to be established over the next week – is now a priority as the bitter winter starts to bite. Donations to World Vision’s Pakistan Earthquake Appeal can be made on 0800 800 200, or www.worldvision.org.nz

Timing is Everything

349TC053/05

Owning a car is a lot like being sent to school as a kid. It’s the little things that end up getting you into the most trouble. With cars it is typically maintenance, or more accurately, the lack of it that causes the problem. There are critical areas to watch, one of these being the timing belt. Most modern cars have overhead cam (OHC) engines with a timing belt linked to the crankshaft which regulates the frequency of movement of various engine components. A timing belt often requires replacement as it is made from a composite material and wears just like a fan belt. A timing belt has ‘teeth’ and acts upon a gear. Wear on the teeth of the belt or

any stretching can throw the engine timing out. The replacement interval is usually every 50,000 to 100,000 kilometres, but this can vary and the manufacturer’s guidelines in Graeme Gulliver the service manual should be Service Manager followed. Timing belt failure can cause serious internal engine damage requiring expensive repairs. There is also a great inconvenience if it fails late at night, or while on a trip far from dealer/service facilities (when the repair will probably cost more than it should). If you are looking for a good used car, rather than a new vehicle, keep this in mind. Think of it as you would the tyres and check the wear.

PAKEKE Lion Ian Grey congratulates this year’s raffle winner, Joan Daniel of Otorohanga. By Cathy Asplin When Joan Daniel heard she had won the Pakeke Lions Christmas raffle she was thrilled. Then she remembered her tickets were in the glove box of her car - only problem was the car was on it’s way to the South Island. “My son’s car had broken down during his stay here and he had to get back to work. So I told him to take my new car - I had only had it a couple of weeks - and I would get his car fixed here.” She had also arranged for some friends to take his car down after it was repaired and return hers, but of course she wanted to collect her prize before that. “As I couldn’t produce the tickets I had to have my identity confirmed by the police.” A very excited Mrs Daniel arrived in Te Awamutu earlier this week in a borrowed car to collect her prize. The Caltex service station worker is also a member of the Otorohanga Lionesses Club, so she knows how much work goes into a project like the

349055AD

Pakeke Lions raffle. “Well done Pakeke Lions and thanks also to all the businesses who support this lovely Christmas raffle.” Mrs Daniel picked up a book of raffle tickets when she was in Te Awamutu to attend a course. “I parked right outside where they were selling the raffle in town, so I grabbed some change out of the glovebox and threw the tickets back in there afterwards - never thinking the car would be so far away when the raffle was drawn.” She is looking forward to sharing the ‘goodies’ with her four children and ‘rugby team ‘ of 15 grandchildren. Pakeke Lions member Ian Grey says money raised from this annual raffle is returned to the community. “So we would like to send a big thanks to the business community which generously supports this project and all of the people who have willingly purchased tickets. “Ticket sales were highly successful this year.”

Online rugby fitness programme kicks off New Zealand Rugby Union and ACC have joined forces to help rugby players stay in shape over summer - with the launch of a new online fitness programme. ACC injury prevention programme manager, Simon Gianotti says www.rugbysmart.co.nz was an internet-based extension of the 10-point RugbySmart programme for peak performance and injury prevention developed by the NZRU and ACC. “The RugbySmart programme

has already shown good results in reducing rugby injuries. This online programme will now take it to a wider audence,” says Gianotti. The programme is for everyone, not just top players. “The great thing is that it’s free, it’s readily tailored to suit your level of fitness, and it will get you into great condition.” The off-season programme will soon be supplemented by a more game-specific pre-season online programme. 349TC048/05

CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE

‘Now they’re trying to bring religion into Christmas’ By Pastor Bruce Bradburn, Te Awamutu Baptist Church I read a piece in the paper last week about a conversation that was overheard on a bus in Auckland. A young woman, who was talking to a friend, said “would you believe it, now they’re even trying to bring religion into Christmas!” Doesn’t that just about sum up how Christmas has become for many now - “those Christians, they’re trying to take over our special time of year”. Well, the funny thing is, I thought Christmas was actually all about the birth of Christ. In fact, did you realise that every time you write the date, you acknowledge the real reason for Christmas. You see, we date everything around this man. 2005 actually means 2005 years after the birth of Christ. His birthday forever changed our calendar! So, did this one day really make a difference? Did this one man really make a difference? Well, if Jesus was taken out of history, some of humankinds greatest architecture, the great Cathedrals and Churches around the world would not exist. If Jesus had never been born, the majority of the great works of art of the ages would be lost. paintings like ‘The Last Supper’ by Da Vinci and ‘Madonna’ (the painting that is) and many of the other great works of art. If it wasn’t for this one man and this one day, some of the most beautiful music that has ever been put on score, sung by a voice, or played by an instrument would not exist. If that day had not dawned in Bethlehem 2005 years ago, there

would be no Handel’s ‘Messiah’ nor would we have the music of Johann Sebastian Bach who dedicated every note he wrote to God’s glory. And then, think of the great literature of the world of literature that would not exist, but for the birth of the baby at Christmas. Think of the impact that Jesus’ birth has had on humanitarian efforts to help the poor and the hungry. Jesus set the example of helping the poor, of caring for those on the edge of society. And, he told his followers to go and do likewise. And they did! And his life has inspired programmes like the Red Cross and The Salvation Army, World Vision, Tear Fund and many other humanitarian efforts. If Jesus had never been born it is hard to imagine what modern medicine would be like. Following the example of Jesus, it was followers of Christ that began some of the greatest advances in medicine. Many historians attribute the creation of ‘the hospital’ to Christianity - in the U.S. the first hospitals were started by Christians. Consider the effect that Jesus’ birth has had on education. The greatest universities worldwide were founded by Christians for Christian purposes: Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Yale, Princeton and others. Most of the world’s languages were first set to writing by Christian missionaries in order for people to read the Bible for themselves. And this is still true today. There are still more than 300 million people in the world who do not have a way to write their

own language - many of these languages are being written down by Christian missionaries and translators. At the end of last century, Time magazine elected its “Person of the Millennium” - and they elected Gutenburg who in the 15th century invented the movable type printing press - enabling books to be published. What was it that inspired and motivated Gutenburg? It was the possibility of mass producing the Bible which tells about Jesus. But wait there’s more ... we could go on and on listing Jesus’ impact on science and government and economics and morality, and civil rights movements. But you know, the most important difference that first Christmas day can make, is the difference that day and that man can make in your life. For as the angel sang that first Christmas night “Unto you was born that day in the city of David, a Saviour who is Christ the Lord.” Trying to bring religion into Christmas? No! We’re just celebrating the One who really has made a difference. Maybe you might want to go celebrate at a church near you this Christmas!

IN BUSINESS CIRCLES

Hot pace set by customers at Te Awamutu’s new ‘2 Degree$+’ store rently living while they look for a house in Te Awamutu, while Mrs Vedder has family at Kawhia. The couple had been looking for a suitable premises in Te Awamutu for around five months, but nothing seemed to be available. “Then my aunt and uncle spotted this location for us on Arawata Street and it has proved to be ideal.” Family also pitched in to get the shop ready in a short space of time. Many of them helped to build shop fittings and mobile display bins, while others painted walls and shelves. Mr Vedder says local businesses have been very supportive as well, helping out with supplies, after hours deliveries, services and advice so that they could open in time for the pre-Christmas shopping period. Leading up to Christmas the store is operating 9am5pm, seven days per week. “Not that we usually close the door right on five o’clock. If there are people still here shopping we keep going until they have finished.”

OWNERS Phil and Esta Vedder have had a busy time setting up their new store on Arawata Street and an even 3490511AD busier time with customers coming through the doors.

The AA and Police are warning motorists planning to travel over the Christmas/New Year period to avoid holiday ‘death marches’ - very long driving periods without rest. Drowsy driving crashes are among the most deadly on the road because the driver is not awake to slow the car down. At best this means the car will hit something that slows it safely and wakes the driver, but at worst it can mean a high speed head-on smash. AA Motoring Affairs Manager Mike Noon says motorists should plan to spend no more than eight to ten hours of solid driving, with substantial breaks every three or four hours. “Don’t start driving long distances late at night and make sure you get a good eight hours sleep the night before. If your passengers fall asleep, stop. You could well be next. And it goes without saying, don’t drink, or take drugs and drive, or speed. “Demonstrating how far and how fast you can drive in a day is not heroic, it’s plain stupid. Heroes don’t put themselves, their family and every other driver on the road at risk,” Mr Noon says. Police National Operations Manager, Inspector John Kelly, says some drivers go to all the trouble of making sure their cars are safe for a long journey, but forget to look after themselves by getting enough sleep the night before. “The Police would rather not be attending any accidents over the Christmas break, and we certainly don’t want to be knocking on anyone’s door to tell them that loved ones they were expecting will not be making it.” Inspector Kelly warns there will be delays and to plan for them. “Give yourself the time and if you do start running late, don’t fret about it. Just bear in mind there are far worse things than being late. Call ahead and take your time. “We have to get over this competitive driving culture where we judge our progress against other vehicles on the road. The road isn’t a racetrack and it really doesn’t matter if you pull over and look at the scenery from time to time.” Currently, New Zealand’s road toll is significantly down on last year’s.

Owners Phil and Esta Vedder say they have been very busy and are pleased with the way local people have welcomed them to town. “We’ve had a great response from the public and some of our lines like the ‘Just Tricks’ joke gifts have been flying out the door.” The shop stocks a huge range of items from toys and small gifts suitable as ‘stocking stuffers’ to homeware, hardware, jewellery makeup and stationery. There are several Christmas lines also available such as light-up Santa hats and Christmas decorations. Mr and Mrs Vedder have operated similar low-cost stores around the North Island, but have made a return to familiar ground with the opening of the latest shop. Both were born in Hamilton, where they are cur-

By Dean Taylor Think of a big Aussie sedan and Falcon or Commodore probably spring to mind. Mitsubishi had a go with the Diamante, but now they’ve cracked it with the 380. The new generation Mitsubishi has done it in style, being named Australia’s Best Large Car and it is on the list for the New Zealand award. I drove the VR-X from Te Awamutu Motors, the model with a bit of extra grunt not available in Australia, plus bigger wheels, tuned suspension, better brakes and exhaust and extra body styling. This is a great looker, with aggressive front styling and a neat rear integrated spoiler and lights. I’m not that keen on silver cars, but check out the other eight choices, especially red and dark grey (sorry Molten and Storm). My 3.8 litre V6 had 180kW of power and

343Nm of torque. It was matched to a five speed automatic with ‘Sports Mode’ sequential shifter. When the foot went to the floor it made a sound like a car wanting to go, and it did. It was nice to actually hear an exhaust tone, I momentarily turned the awesome CD player down. Around town it didn’t feel like a ‘big’ car be-

cause it is so driveable. On the open road the extra power and size was noticeable. The 380 sits nicely on the road, its width and big wheels giving a good feel on both the straights and corners. It has those big brakes to pull up quickly, then the big motor to pull away again. Even in cruise mode the motor wanted to be more willing.

The cockpit is a simple, but effective design, with a multi-purpose LCD centre display that shows time, sound system settings, temperature and air conditioner status. Simple to use controls make adjusting everything very easy, and the main information is straight ahead. Seating and room is excellent for driver and passengers.

By Dean Taylor I have to say first up that I used to have a Viva - it was the worst car I ever owned. It’s fair to say that was back in the day when the British motor industry was struggling, but on the strength of good experiences with earlier model Vauxhalls, I bought one. Now the name has been resurrected by General Motors to fill the gap between the small car and the family sedan. So complete with Holden badge this time downunder, the Viva is back on the road. It’s a pretty safe bet, this 1.8 litre mid-sized machine. But that’s what was needed. It comes as a hatch, sedan or wagon with simple styling that has a European touch (to go with that Italian name). The wrap around lights and slightly sporty stance add to the pleasing looks. The engine gives a re-

Phone Jeff Jamieson at 027 289 6057

spectable 89kW of power and 169Nm of torque. With either five speed manual or four speed auto, this is a peppy performer. The engine is a DOHC, multi valve, multi point injected model with a variable intake manifold. My old Viva had a carburettor which poured petrol everywhere, except into the engine - which was just as well because

it was often broken. Oh how times have changed. But it’s not just about performance. The manual should give an economy rate of between seven and eight litres per 100km, while the automatic is closer to nine litres. That’s good mileage at a time when fuel prices are high and unpredictable. And it is not that the economy comes at the

expense of other features. The Viva has good brakes, MP3 compatible CD sound system, air conditioning, power windows and plenty of safety features, including four airbags. Because its a mid sized car, careful attention has been placed on storage. The Viva has lots of handy storage features, including good sizes door bins.

Jennie says that makes her experience even more special. “People came from all over the country to have this opportunity, travelling from as far away as Nelson and Wanaka. “Fortunately I was in the

second group to go and the track had dried out - I would have been disappointed if we couldn’t go as fast as possible!“ It sounds like the experience has also brought out the racer in this Te Awamutu fan - she’s joined the HSV Club and is seriously considering racing in club time trials.

Les and Anne McNeil (pictured) are the envy of hot rodders everywhere, building their first car, driving it to the Super Chevy Nationals in Invercargill and coming home with all the trophies. They won the Grand National Champion trophy and awards for Best Paint, Best Under Bonnet, Best Upholstery and Longest Distance Travelled. The couple own Tyre Boss in Otorohanga and are members of the Te Awamutu Rod and Custom Club. Building a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air had been a long-term dream, but it took a near death accident while four wheel driving to force the issue. Mr McNeil said he could never justify the money while the couple were raising their children, but four-anda-half years ago the time seemed right. So committed were they to the dream that they purchased the plate before they found a car. Mrs McNeil says it is a reference to both the car and her, an idea that came to mind in a flash and that they both agreed suited. The rolling body for

the project was bought from Invercargill and stripped for a bare metal rebuild. Alan Langdon of Otorohanga Panelbeaters put the car back into shape. Mr McNeil’s dream was for a red Chev, but no colours matched his vision, so carpainter Peter Toa of Colour FX in Otorohanga kept mixing paint until the right one was found. Every detail was designed by the McNeil’s, with help from their team. Shane Ward of CH Allen in Te Awamutu

was entrusted with the upholstery, turning the McNeil’s vision into an award winning design. Initially the couple had planned to have the car ready last year, but found they were rushing and taking shortcuts. Instead they changed the deadline to the Whangamata Beach Hop in April this year and finished the car to the specifications they wanted. The Chevy has an aftermarket 350ci injected Ramjet engine, 700R transmission, 17” wheels tyres and stock running gear. It took

the couple three years scouring books and magazines to find the wheels they liked. Mr McNeil says he had clear pictures in his head of what the car would look like, including the lake pipes. Everyone laughed at the idea until he did the mock-up, and they stayed. Mr McNeil says he likes the look and the sound. No-one could believe the car was driven to the Super Chevy Nationals, but while it is show car class, it is also a daily runner. In fact in the seven

Driving a red HSV Holden with the number plate ‘My Vice’ probably gives away the fact that Jennie Parkes is a bit of a ‘petrol head’. So when her husband and children were looking for a birthday treat for her, they looked to Holden websites and Greg Murphy’s ‘Club Murph’. The ideal gift was there - Hot Laps With Murph. Her birthday surprise was a once in a lifetime chance to experience racing around a track at speeds of up to 255 km/hr with Greg Murphy at the wheel. The visit to Pukekohe racetrack also included a certificate, photo and refreshments after the ‘hot’ laps with Murph. And the verdict from the birthday girl? “Absolutely awesome. I loved it. It was the best birthday present I could have imagined.” While most people would have been hanging on for dear life, not Jennie, she was waving to her family with a smile plastered on her face. “I could have kept going, no problem. I learned plenty about driving at speed and how to attack corners.” She also says (tongue-incheek) “I should get to work faster now!” In all 36 people lined up at the Pukekohe circuit to enjoy the experience. They are probably the last to do so, as Murph’s commitments means he cannot offer

The team at Vehicle Testing wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and safe motoring over the festive season

By Dean Taylor One of the most hotly contested markets is for the small car. Everyone has one, and everyone is trying to make theirs cooler and cuter than the next. Toyota established itself over the years, firstly with the Starlet, then the Echo. The new model is the Yaris, which is the new Echo but with the international name. Hopefully that change will not affect them, because these are neat little cars. I drove the first generation Echo in cities and on the open road in the South Island and was terrific. The Yaris four door I drove from Waikato Toyota had been given a fit out as a special offer to make it even a bit more special. The Dark Blue model with silver skirts, spoiler and sports pedals was quite a stunner. Unfortunately the new mags hadn’t arrived at the time I had the car. Waikato Toyota plan to sell these extras as a special deal on the first models sold. They are just some of the genuine accessories offered by Toyota. They have so many they print one pamphlet for the car,

and a second for the accessories, so there is no excuse for not making your Yaris stand out from the crowd. My car had the 1.3 litre DOHC VVTi engine with 64kW of power and 120Nm of torque. With the five speed manual (there is a four speed auto option) it was quick enough off the mark and fine on the open road.

I still think the 80kW 1.5 litre would be preferable once the little car had a bit of weight on board. Inside is roomy enough in the front, even for me, and the dash layout is simple and neat. A centre mounted digital console shows all the information you need to know and the sound system and climate control

system stacks below that. And because it’s small, it is really clever with storage throughout the car. Most importantly safety hasn’t been compromised for size, the Yaris scoring the maximum 5 stars in the EuroNCAP crash safety tests.

The vehicle has a Vauxhall chassis - his special interest vehicle (he has eight Vauxhalls in various stages of resurrection in the sheds at his home). The 12cwt 57hp VXC light commercial has a three-speed crash gearbox. It zips along nicely on the open road (at about 19 litres per 100kms) and is more pleasant to travel in than Mr Parsons imagined. He has restored it for fellow Hamilton VIntage and Classic Car Club member, Stuart France. of its history, he is keen to know more about its local connections. It was owned in the late 1930s by three Ohaupo Road residents - Alan Boyd, Robert Whittaker and Jos Bothwell. Anyone who can help with the Bedford’s history is invited to phone Mr Parsons at 871 9617. Mr Parsons retrieved it from Cook’s Beach two years ago paying $250 for a vehicle virtually without a body and in complete disrepair. It has been a true labour of love. An automotive mechanic by trade Mr Parsons was always confident of his ability to rebuild the engine, but the woodwork required in restoring it (as a van) needed new skills.

When Brent Parsons ran out of gas in the 1932 British Bedford truck he has restored on a back road near Pirongia he was stuck there for an hour. Not because he did not have more gas on hand, but because passers by kept stopping to talk to him about the vintage vehicle which he has done such a beautiful job of restoring. The Bedford first saw service in 1933 as a lines truck for Te Awamutu Electric Power Board. It was one of two purchased by the Power Board from Ebbett Motors for 387 pounds, 10 shillings and ninepence. It was traded with Craik Motors in 1938 and although Mr Parsons has been able to research much

Ann Waters had the satisfaction of recording her first holein-one in a career spanning four decades at Te Awamutu Golf Club in February. Little did she know, 10 months later that she would be made a life member of the club. “I’m stoked, it’s been a memorable year,” says Waters. The presentation of a life membership certificate and gold brooch bar was made by women’s president Raie Green. It was in recognition of Waters untiring work and support as a member of 42 years. After joining the club in 1963, Waters quickly showed her skill for the game - rapidly progressing through bronze II and bronze I ranks to the silver division, gaining many trophies and her LGU badges. She has held offices of secretary and handicapper for the

golf club, along with president, captain, secretary and handicapper for the women’s section. She also had a lengthy stint as secretary for the Waikato King Country Lady Vets. “In all matters pertaining to golf, Ann has shown an encyclopaedic knowledge which she has always been willing to share with others when called upon,” said Mrs Green. “Ann’s expertise has helped smooth the transition for new office bearers in their understanding of all golfing protocol. “She has a wonderful sense of humour, with stories and anecdotes on instant recall that are enjoyed by all.” Waters has taken it upon herself to continue with the preserving of the history of the club, collecting photos and news items which pertain to all club events.

Everyone a winner in Xmas tourney All 127 women from throughout the Waikato King Country went home with a prize from the Christmas tournament at Te Awamutu Golf Club. Teams of four competed, with the best three stableford scores on each hole counting towards their total. Angela’s Angels, comprising Angela Thomson, Hazel Bryant (TA), Noeline Mulligan, Marion Kloeten (Pio Pio/Aria) prevailed with 125 points. One shot in arrears were the runners-up, Fairies Galore, comprising Margaret Johnson (TA), Brenda Staples, Meredith Pengelly (Pirongia), Cynthia Dow (Waitomo). Prizes included those rewarding accuracy, along with ‘hot shot’ prizes for shots that were far from accurate. Humorous entertainment was provided by some talented club members, adding to the camaraderie of the day. Karen Campton was a convincing winner of Saturday’s club scramble with 41 stableford points. She headed off Julie Stevanon on 37 and Robyn Norris 34.

NZ team pursuiters beat world champs Gudsell’s strength leads team to victory

NEW ZEALAND team pursuiter Tim Gudsell pictured competing in the recent Tour www.tombalks.com of Southland. Trackside were Gudsell’s sister Rebecca and some of her Te Awamutu mates on their O.E., including Sarah Swney and Stacey Osborne. Gudsell’s coach Gra-

ham Bunn was stoked with the victory. “It was a mighty achievement. “They were up against pretty much the British team that won the world

WAIPA RACING CLUB

championship.” Bunn says the good thing, from a New Zealand point of view, is they now have depth in the team pursuit. “They introduced another guy, with Peter (Latham), the usual anchor-man back home, and they still produced a top time.” Latham missed the World Cup meet through injury. Gudsell has been through the school of hard knocks and ups and downs of cycling himself. He will have been thinking of his mate Peter back home. It was the New Zealand team’s second World Cup victory this year. They also beat the British in February in Sydney. The riders that outsprinted the British then were Allen, Godfrey, Ryan and Greg Henderson. New Zealand won their qualifying race in Manchester in 4:09.142, with Britain second. Gudsell teamed up with Aucklander Richard Bowker in the madison. They acquitted themselves well, finishing sixth out of 20 teams, after being fourth entering the closing stages.

By Colin Thorsen Te Awamutu international cyclist Tim Gudsell is on fire. A week after cleaning up at the Oceania championships in Wanganui, the 21-year-old has produced another stunning performance on the other side of the world. Gudsell was the strongman in the New Zealand men’s team pursuit who beat reigning world champions Britain to claim gold at the World Cup cycling meeting in Manchester, England. Jason Allen, Hayden Godfrey, Gudsell and Marc Ryan clocked 4m 08.142s in the 4000m on Sunday (NZ time) to down a late charging British quartet for one of New Zealand cycling’s best results this year. The New Zealand foursome led the first half of the race, with Britain wresting back the initiative to lead at the start of the final 1000m. Gudsell then took control, pulling the last two laps to get the Kiwis home first by a fraction of a second. Britain recorded 4: 08.345 in the International Cycling Union event.

The multi-talented Chyna Hohepa and Paekau are also in New Zealand netball age group training squads. Chyna’s older sister, ex-Te Awamutu Col-

lege sportsperson of the year Carla Hohepa, is back home for the holidays from Otago University. She scored the winning touchdown helping Te Aroha win the women’s open grade at the Maori touch na-

tionals. Carla is in the Waikato open women’s touch squad training for the national tournament in Wellington. She played netball for Otago this past season while living in Dunedin.

life to the same opposition. Parsons enjoyed further success, taking out the ‘pick your partner’ mixed pairs tournament with Merle Wyllie as his lead. They beat Joan Oates (s) and Clive Strickett 23-10 to claim the silver tray. A feature of this event was the encouraging form shown by junior players, especially Robyn Pitcon. She excelled as lead for Kevin Ager, another junior with only three years playing experience. Ager and Pitcon were eliminated in the semi-finals but made the eventual winners work hard for their 19-13 win. Oates and Strickett breezed past Dawn Small (s) and Lindsay Cameron 28-9 in their semi-final. Cameron bounced back winning the singles competition for

Ron Parsons’ team retained both their lives winning the championship rinks at Pirongia Bowling Club. It was not all one way traffic they were made to work hard for their victory. Parsons, with Kevin Ager (3), Don Scrimshaw (2) and Les Liddington (l), needed an extra end to beat Neville Northcott (s), Alex Muir, Stuart Branch and Russell Refoy in the final. The scores were locked at 11all after the completion of the mandatory 15 ends. It took a brilliant last bowl from skip Parsons to turn three shots down on the head into a win for his team on the extra end. Veteran Scrimshaw was outstanding at No 2 for the winners, as was skip Northcott for the runners-up. Northcott’s team lost their first

the Hine Cup outright with four wins. It is the second consecutive year that he has won the event, played over four games of 10 ends. Cameron’s wife Sonya featured in the Courier recently, making her debut in Sarah Ulmer’s SUB ride at Karapiro. Len Knapp skipped his Te Rapa team of Barry Chapman (2) and Henry Knapp (l) to victory in the Fairview Motors sponsored tournament at Pirongia. The visitors recorded three wins and a draw from their four games. Te Awamutu evergreen Joan Pollard (s), with Doris Mackey (2) and Margaret Kelman (l) claimed the runners-up prize with 2½ wins, on a countback from three other teams also with 2½ wins.

By Colin Thorsen The strength of women’s touch in Te Awamutu is reflected in the number of local teenagers making provincial age group teams. Chyna Hohepa is in the Waikato under-21 squad preparing for the national tournament in Wellington. Fellow Te Awamutu College student Jasmine Emery (U17) and Waikato Diocesan’s Jeana Tukua (U15) are Waikato representatives selected for interprovincial age group tournaments at North Harbour and Ngatea. Karamea Hohepa made the Waikato under-17 squad but is unavailable for either of the inter-provincial tournaments. She is a former Fraser High School pupil, set to attend Te Awamutu College in 2006. Chyna Hohepa, Karamea Hohepa, Emery, Tukua and Donalda Paekau all played for the runners-up Tainui under-16 girls’ team at the Maori touch nationals at Hopuhopu on December 3-4. Their only loss over

The regent Theatre and the Courier give you the chance to win one of two delightful Chicken Little soft toys in time to celebrate this new movie. To be in to win write your name, age and phone number on the back of an envelope and answer this question: What is Chicken Little afraid of? Get your answer to us by 5pm next Tuesday. The sky’s the limit in Walt Disney’s new computer animated comedy, ‘Chicken Little’. The movie picks up where the classic fable ends, namely after our pint-sized hero

has caused big-time havoc when he mistakes a falling acorn for a piece of the sky. In the wake of the ‘unfortunate acorn incident’ Chicken Little’s name is mud in his hometown of Oakey Oaks. Down but not out, he struggles mightily to restore his reputation and make his Dad, Buck Cluck, proud. Chicken Little joins the local baseball team and, despite the fact that he is barely bigger than a ball himself, he manages to smack a championship-winning homerun. With one crack of the bat, the town laughing stock becomes the toast of Oakey Oaks. But no sooner has Chicken

Little redeemed himself then he is conked on the head one more time. And this time the sky really is falling! Fearful of once again being labeled crazy, Chicken Little tells no one but his best friends, Runt of the Litter, Abby Mallard A.K.A. Ugly Duckling and Fish Out of Water, about the threat that hangs over Oakey Oaks. Together this misfit crew tries to save the day. Chicken Little eventually discovers that he needs to risk his newfound popularity and alert his father and the town. When Buck realizes Chicken Little actually has it right this time, he unites with his son and his friends as they set out to save the world.
