Outline of China s Outward FDI in 2008 1. China,s outward FDI net flows (hereinafter referred to as ¡°outflows¡±) in 2008 reached US$55. 91 billion, increasing by 111% compared to the last year. Among the outflows, US$ 28.36 billion was incremental equity investment, US$ 9.89 billion was reinvestment of current profits and US$ 17.66 billion was unclassified investment, accounting for 50.7%, 17.7% and 31.6% of total respectively. By the end of 2008, nearly 8,500 domestic investing entities had established about 12,000 overseas enterprises, spreading in 174 countries (regions) globally. The accumulated outward FDI net stock volume (hereinafter referred to as ¡°stock¡±) stood at US$ 183.97 billion. Total assets of overseas enterprises had exceeded US$1 trillion.

2. The outflows of financial outward FDI reached US$ 14.05 billion in 2008, among which US$ 13.2 billion belongs to the banking sector, taking up 94%. By the end of 2008, the accumulated stock of financial outward FDI stood at US$ 36.69 billion, among which US$ 26.79 billion belongs to the banking sector, US$ 510 million belongs to the insurance sector, US$ 530 million belongs to the securities sector and US$ 8.86 billion belongs to other financial institutions, taking up 73%, 1.4%, 1.4% and 24.2% of total respectively. By the end of 2008, the Chinese state-owned commercial banks had established 43 branch offices, 20 affiliated institutions in 28 countries (regions) including the U.S.A., Japan and the U. K. with an overseas staff of 81 thousand, among which 79 thousand are foreign employees. As of 2008, China had established 12 financial institutions in insurance sector abroad.

3. The non-financial outward FDI flows reached US$ 41.86 billion in 2008, marking an increase of 68. 5% compared to the last year. The overseas enterprises had realized total sales of US$ 534.3 billion, increasing 58.3%. Total exports and imports realized with the involvement of overseas invested enterprises amounted to US$ 179.2 billion, of which US$ 32.1 billion were exports, making an increase of 29.4%. 4. In 2008, the overseas enterprises accommodated 1026 thousand employees, including 455 thousand foreigners.
