The 2013 status report identifies progress taken throughout the year on several objectives and initiatives identified within the 20122017 Ajax Accessibility in Action Plan. Those items identified in the Plan not listed herein have either been identified as ‘completed’ or ‘ongoing’ in previous status reports. The 2013 status report also includes newly-identified actions for 2014-2017.

Community Accessibility Partnerships & Inclusive Programming o Explore partnership opportunities which will further the development and delivery of accessible and inclusive programs in Ajax.
Partnership with Grandview Children’s Centre continues to provide program space for programs and camps operated by Grandview for Ajax residents. New sensory equipment was purchased for use in children’s programming Launch of the HeartWise Exercise Program in Ajax in partnership with Rouge Valley Health System to assist individuals transitioning from Cardiac Rehab to safe and suitable community exercise programs. Seasonal programs offered in partnership with Grandview Children’s Centre include martial arts, art therapy, music therapy, preschool playtime, and four weeks of youth summer camp at the Ajax Community Centre Adult Drop-in Centre partnership with Community Living Ajax-Pickering Participation in Central East Health Line Living with Chronic Conditions workshops To respond to the needs of participants with special needs, staff have created an alternate swims assessment (used to assess deep-end swimming competency) to be used when it is not possible for a participant to complete the standard swim test due to a special need (i.e. difficulty with physical mobility, behavioral challenges, developmental challenges, visual/hearing impairments, or medical conditions). Participants may request an alternate assessment of their ability through the Aquatics Supervisor or Aquatics Community Recreation Coordinator.

Project Target: 2014 Aquatics will be offering an accessible swim for families including persons with disabilities. This swim will provide a quieter, lower ratio swim environment and will be offered on Saturdays at the Audley Recreation Centre in the leisure pool form 4-5 p.m. The aquatic hall will be shared with teen lesions that will be taking place in the lap pool. The leisure pool and recreational swim equipment will be available for those participating in the swim. Customer Feedback Mechanisms o Monitor current customer feedback mechanisms and look to increase feedback with persons with disabilities
AAC Chair and members presented delegation to Council regarding proclamation of National Access Awareness Week in May 2013 Members of the AAC participated in the Grand Opening of the Audley Recreation Centre in June 2013 with an accessibility awareness booth. The booth promoted the Committee’s message of fostering a ‘Culture of Inclusion’ and over 150 participants took part in ‘experiencing’ a disability through a variety of visual impairment simulations. Members were present to answer questions and hand out resource materials, including ‘seeds of understanding’. Project Target: 2014* Acquisition of Customer Relationship Management Software – the software will help to streamline the work flow process of how inquiries / feedback are managed corporately. Equipment Replacement* o Identify opportunities to upgrade and improve accessible specifications on Town vehicles and equipment
Annually, aging fleet vehicles are replaced with updated versions. A key accessibility initiative has been to install side step rails/three point hand rails on the side of all vehicles indentified to have difficult egress into the cab area. This includes but is not limited to snow plows, off-road vehicles and equipment, stake trucks, 4x4 pickup trucks, fire apparatus and ice resurfacers. The Showmobile (mobile stage) is planned for replacement in 2014. The replacement of this piece of equipment with an updated version, will accommodate an accessible ramp and/or lift. This will allow persons with disabilities to access the performance staging area more easily.

2013 Progress AAC and Ajax Accessibility in Action Plan featured in the Winter 2013 edition of Ajax Today. Annual participation in Volunteer Recognition Awards – AAC nomination of resident Casey Malvern for Accessibility Award. AAC developed an Accessible Ajax brochure providing information on accessibilityrelated Town of Ajax initiative and resources. The document was promoted online through the Town’s social media channels (Twitter/Facebook). AAC developed an ‘Accessibility Makes Good Business ¢en$’ flyer, providing information on the importance of accessibility for local business and simple inexpensive tips to improve business accessibility. Attended Ajax Business Network Meeting regarding Pan Am 2015 and set up information display about the importance of accessibility for business (November 2013). Ongoing accessibility content is submitted to the Town’s Diversity & Community Engagement Plan Newsletter and Regional Accessibility Newsletter Members of the AAC and staff attended the Provincial Accessibility Advisory Committee Forum in Toronto in May 2013. Ajax Public Library o Review all library resources, including the print and electronic collections to ensure that they are accessible and that the library is in compliance with the Accessibility Standards for Information & Communications
Investigated database accessibility components for persons with disabilities: o Staff reviewed the Accessibility Standards for Information and Communication to ensure that library electronic resources are accessible o 90% of databases were identified to have accessible features such as audio options, and 95% offer print/email options o Two vendors (Gale and EBSCO) have committed to offer fully accessible options in the future o As part of the general product review process, staff will incorporate ‘Questions to ask to ensure e-resources are accessible’ for new vendors and suppliers Development of a staff orientation check list of accessible services and resources as part of the orientation package to new staff: o A check list of accessible services and resources has been developed as part of the orientation package for new staff and is awaiting final approval. All 90 inch material shelving units at the Main Branch have been reduced to 67.5 inches. Some bottom shelves have been adjusted in the adult area for the general public to browse the collection more easily and for older adults who may have difficulty bending their knees.
Relocation of the media collection: o The DVD collection has been moved into media drawers, from regular shelving, for easier browsing access, particularly those who may have limited mobility with their hands. Promoted Daisy talking books and magazine collections to persons with visual impairment: o Reviewed the community agencies that serve people with disabilities. o Developed and implemented the annual training plan for library staff to include the use of the accessible station as a refresher course so that all staff are kept up to date with its use and any chances to hardware/software. o Purchased a start-up collection of reading materials in the Daisy format to support the TD Children’s summer reading program. Promoted library resources in various types of accessible formats: o Ajax Public Library Twitter and Facebook have been used to promote downloadable collections in place of a blog. 2013 Progress Fire & Emergency Services expanded its student co-op program to include students with exceptionalities. Partnership with the Durham District School Board has provided 2 students the opportunity to participate weekly in a variety of activities within their functional abilities (vehicle checks, classroom and active training exercises, equipment identification, fire safety, etc.). School-to-Work program partnership with Ajax High School supports graduating high school students in transitioning from school to the workforce.
Employee Accommodations Policy & Process Review o Conduct a comprehensive review of all HR policy and process documents to ensure compliance with legislated Accessible Employment Standard requirements.
Discussion meetings have been held in consultation with the Committee Coordinator to review required changes. The system will allow for paperless automated online delivery, tracking, collection and storage of forms and documents. Public meeting has been held in consultation with the AAC to determine recommendations for proportion of accessible taxicabs.
Annual consultation meeting held with AAC and Durham Region Transit Specialized Services Town of Ajax manages the installation of hard surface bus pads in Ajax on behalf of Durham Region Transit. Town staff work with transit staff to develop specifications and identify locations for safer and more accessible opportunities to enter and exit the public transit system. 240 bus pads will have been completed by December 2013. This project is funded by the Region of Durham.

2013 Progress Addition of blinds to St. Francis Centre box office transaction window in order to allow the office to be utilized as an accessible change space. Replacement of main entrance benches at the St. Andrews Centre with higher seating to make sitting and rising easier for program participants. Village Seniors Centre games room benches replaces with higher seating to make sitting and getting up easier for program participants. Relocation of current mail/drop box site at Town Hall. Mail/drop box to be located in a more visible, accessible location beside the main entrance doors at Town Hall. Signage and font increased according to accessibility standards. Mail/drop box to be installed at recommended height for access (December 2013). Project Target: 2014* Proposed replacement of the countertops in the HMS Room kitchens at the Ajax Community Centre. During renovations staff will review accessible design relating to countertops, particularly relative to space, height and reach requirements, as considerations for accessibility. Project Targets: 2016* Proposed replacement of the front entrance doors at the Ajax Community Centre; staff will incorporate any possible accessible design elements into the replacement. Proposed replacement of the public change room lockers at the Ajax community Centre; staff will incorporate any possible accessible design elements into the replacement.

APPENDIX A: Accessible Trails, Parks & Public Spaces
2013 Ajax Accessibility in Action Plan Status Report The Town’s first inclusive playground, winner of a 2013 Durham Region Award for Accessibility, is located at the Audley Recreation Centre. It includes the following accessible features: o Playground elements that include specific accessible playground apparatuses (swings, climbers, low level station etc.) o Climbing stone with tactile surface o Dinosaur digging element o Accessible scorpion water feature o Appropriate gradients on all pedestrian surfaces o Recessed curbs throughout the complex o Accessible resilient playground surfaces o All surrounding trails are composed of asphalt paving and barrier-free access with minimal gradients Project Target: 2014-2015* Rotary Park Canoe/Kayak Docks and Fishing Nodes – (as identified in the Shoreline Improvement Strategy) This type of facility brings another type of recreational activity to the Ajax Waterfront and promotes and active lifestyle. The facility shall be designed to allow for safe launching of canoes and kayaks from a dock located at the existing boat launch at Rotary Park. This design will include considerations for both an accessible lookout and fishing node. These areas will further support bird and marsh viewing and recreational fishing at Rotary Park. Project Target: 2016* McLean Community Centre playground replacement – as part of the placement process, staff will review accessibility requirements and equipment options during the design phase of the project; staff will also seek input from the general public and AAC during the design process. Project Target: 2016* Paradise Park Development – including preservation of popular park elements such as baseball, tennis, playground and soccer areas located in the northeast section of the site. Proposed new amenities to support a swimming beach include washrooms and/or a change facility to be constructed on the existing fire hall building footprint.

Applications for significant development projects submitted for site plan approval by the Planning Section are circulated to the AAC for review and comment. Project Target: 2014-2016* Conduct comprehensive review of Site Plan Manual, Zoning By-law and related bylaws and documents to incorporate compliance requirements with the Design of Public Spaces Standard Development of a Pickering Village Community Improvement Plan*
The Town has drafted a Community Improvement Place (CIP) with respect to Pickering Village (inclusive of Kingston Road, Old Kingston Road, Church Street, and Elizabeth Street. Within the CIP, one of the proposed Financial Incentive Programs being offered is a Façade Grant – a program to promote the sensitive redesign of existing building facades to enhance the image of Pickering Village. The Façade Improvement Grant Program will provide property owners a financial incentive to undertake restoration or upgrades to their building and property that may not otherwise occur due to cost premiums associated with these improvements. The Facade Improvement Grant Program will provide building owners with the opportunity to receive a grant equal to 50% of the eligible costs to a maximum of $5,000 per building for exterior accessibility upgrades (Approval of the CIP is anticipated in November 2013)
