Relax and enjoy your flight(s) with complimentary meals and drinks on board. Day 2–Mon. May 15: Arrive Rome Welcome to Rome! After a warm welcome by our local representative, we board our motorcoach and drive to our hotel for time to rest before enjoying a Welcome Dinner and prayers to consecrate our time ahead. Hotel Nova Bethlem Day 3–Tue. May 16: Vatican City, Appian Way, Basilicas We head for our opening Mass at St Peter's Basilica built precisely over the tomb of the apostle. Unsurpassed in beauty, a monument to the long history of the Catholic Church, St. Peter’s is the largest church in the world and is considered one of the holiest places of Catholicism. After Mass you will be able to view the Michelangelo’s Pieta, a stunning marble sculpture depicting the Virgin Mary holding Christ after His crucifixion, death, and removal off the cross before being placed in the tomb. Next we visit the Vatican Museums, whose treasures include the ancient Rome exhibits with the famous Laocoon statue, and the High Renaissance murals of Raphael, which he was painting at the same time Michelangelo completed the Sistine Chapel, another marvel. After enjoying free time for lunch on your own, or to purchase souvenirs from Vatican City we will begin the short journey down the Appian Way, the earliest road of Ancient Rome to the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls. Rome's second largest church, the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls is erected on the site which is traditionally believed to be the burial place of the Apostle Paul. Throughout the centuries the Basilica would not cease to be embellished and enhanced by the Popes only to be almost completely destroyed by a terrible fire on the night of July 15, 1823. The Basilica was reconstructed identically to what it had been before, using all the elements which had survived the fire and embellished over time with beautiful mosaics, a magnificent portico with 150 columns while contemporary work has uncovered the tomb of the Apostle so that all
pilgrims can pray and visit. We continue to the Basilica of St. John Lateran, built in the fourth century in honor of St. John the Baptist. St. John Lateran is the Cathedral of Rome and the most important of the four major basilicas. Next to it we visit the Holy Stairs, that have been traditionally identified as the very same ascended by Jesus in Pontius Pilate’s palace in Jerusalem. We return to our hotel for dinner and overnight. Hotel Nova Bethlem Day 4, Wed-May 17: Papal Audience, Fountains and Piazzas We attend the Papal Audience at St. Peter’s Square and receive the blessings of His Holiness, Pope Francis (if His Holiness is in residence). Following the Papal Audience, we will visit the famous fountains and piazzas starting at the Fontana di Trevi (Trevi Fountain) walking all the way to the beautiful, Piazza Navona. This square was built on the former Stadium of Domitian that held many festivals and sporting events (86 A.D). At the center of this square, stands the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers). There are four figures constructed on this fountain that represent four rivers: the Nile, Ganges, Danube, and Rio de la Plata. We will celebrate Mass at the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, built in 352 AD, the largest of the temples dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the city of Rome, followed by dinner at a local restaurant. Hotel Nova Bethlem Day 5–Thu. May 18: Rome/ Barcelona This morning we fly to Barcelona, Spain. It’s a true national monument with its buildings built with practically indestructible granite stone. We will visit the great Cathedral and celebrate Mass. Inside the Cathedral there are pieces of priceless architecture, statues and religious treasures. Behind the silver and gold main altar we will find the sarcophagi of St. James and two of his disciples.
