2018 PROGRAM SCHEDULE What types of science and engineering activities will my student engage in? Blue Studios has created the ultimate summer STEM experience. Students engage in intellectually robust, hands-on science experiments and engineering projects under the direction of STEM professions who guide them through scientific methods and the engineering design process. Aligned to Next Generation Science Standards, the Department of Labor and best practices in STEM education, projects have real-world application and relevance from the students’ perspective. Students leave with an understanding of science and engineering and how these fields impact the world in which they live, and most importantly how they can be a part of that world. Blue Studios enlightens and empowers students to think of themselves as someone who can do anything and go anywhere. We engage and entertain students on a number of levels: making STEM real and relevant to their world now; shifting the paradigm from consumption to creation; and showing even the youngest students that they can engage in science and engineering right here and now. Students model the work and methods of STEM professionals, while exploring a wide variety of STEM fields and careers—from botany, chemistry and microbiology to computer science, coding and aerospace, structural, and packaging engineering. Students experience the joy that comes from planning and building something with their own hands, while developing key STEM skills sets: problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and resilience. Students also uncover how scientific methods are used to arrive at good answers to the conundrums of science as well as to everyday decision making.

2018 PROGRAM SCHEDULE What is Minecraft coding? Minecraft coding is the education platform of the popular game in which students explore, create and play in an immersive Minecraft world. Students learn how to write the code by moving, building and creating objects inside the game. The platform is a great primer for learning dynamic coding languages because it’s very similar to JavaScript—one of the languages used to build more complex websites. What is Swift Playground? Swift is a powerful and intuitive programming language created by Apple and used by the pros to build today’s most popular apps for Mac computers, Apple Watches and iPhones. Writing Swift code is interactive and fun. The syntax is concise yet expressive, and Swift includes modern features that developers love. Swift Playground is the “kids version“ of Swift. It’s a revolutionary app that makes learning Apple’s Swift language interactive and fun for children. It requires no coding knowledge, so it’s perfect for students just starting out. Designed by Apple and other leading developers, it allows students to solve puzzles, take on a series of challenges and step up to more advanced “playgrounds” to master the basics of Swift. What type of coding (web and mobile development) will my student learn? We provide students with the tools required to kick-start their journey in coding and become lifelong learners. From programming fundamentals to launching web apps, they’ll learn to solve problems with code while applying industry best practices in a collaborative environment. Students will focus on the front end development languages of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Next, they move to the back end language of Ruby on Rails—a modern web language and model view controller (MVC) framework. Students also learn the critical value that teamwork and collaboration plays in designing and creating today’s complex software and applications. As a benefit, Blue Studios members are also entitled to free admission to our summer hack-a-thons—an awesome venue for students to show off what they’ve learned in a competitive environment.

2018 PROGRAM SCHEDULE What is eSports? Why should my child do it over the summer? “eSports” is simply the short name for electronic sports. It’s a new force in collegiate athletics and is one of the fastest-growing ventures in the world. Just like football teams compete on the field, eSports teams compete on computers. But it doesn’t take place inside living rooms between friends and family. eSports are team-based games played in leagues and tournaments throughout the world, culminating in one final event. The winners of eSports competitions can, and do, go home with thousands of dollars in prize money. People playing computer games is nothing new. Gamers have been doing this for more than 30 years. However, around the year 2000, computers became cheaper and the internet became faster. It also became easier to connect gamers around the world, allowing gaming to become a true spectator sport. Now people who play are skilled professionals attracting millions of fans, which has converted computer gaming into an organized, competitive sport. Blue Studios is offering summer campers the opportunity to test their mettle in this new and emerging technology that is gaining momentum across the world. Who knows where it can lead? Currently, fans come from far and wide to attend big tournaments and watch their favorite “celebrity” players. These leagues offer salaries and player’s rights, just like any other professional sports league. Now high schools are starting to field teams, colleges are starting to offer scholarships and players are turning pro. Even the Olympics is trying to figure out how to get in on the action.
