Special Release

22 June, 2011

-The Senior Staff Housing Committee at its meeting of 25 May, 2011 reviewed the problems confronting staff housing on the campus and made the following observations and decisions. 1. That the available housing units on campus are grossly inadequate to go round deserving members of staff but the Committee would continue to be fair and transparent in the allocation of vacant quarters. 2. It is noted that some members of staff who had moved to their own houses refused to submit keys to the campus accommodation but turn such houses to other uses. The Committee hereby appeals to all those who are not effectively occupying their accommodation on campus, to vacate and surrender such houses to the Senior Staff Housing Committee. 3. It is also noted that the Committee with its limited resources, generated solely from rents payable on the senior staff residential houses on campus, is not in the position to repair official houses to the tastes of allottees. In line with the philosophy of the present University Administration on cost sharing for the repair of residential houses, the Committee reiterates its policy of graded funding of repairs as follows: (a) One Bedroom flat – N30,000; (b) Two Bedroom flat – N40,000; (c) Three Bedroom flat – N60,000; (d) Bungalow, - N80,000; (e) Duplex, N100,000. The Committee however, acknowledges members of staff who had spent their resources, to add value to the houses they occupy. 4. Occupants would henceforth be responsible for all internal repairs once they move into the apartments. The Committee however would continue to maintain the external fittings within the limit of its resources. 5. The Committee would not also intervene in the repair of Boys quarters and garages. Occupants are therefore encouraged to maintain these facilities. 6. Renting out of Boys quarters is illegal, any person caught in the act would be ejected and be made to face disciplinary action. Students are also enjoined not to rent Boys quarters and report cases of staff members collecting rent on such buildings to the Chairman or Secretary of the Senior Staff Housing Committee, on telephone numbers: 08023469780 and 08037271462 respectively. 7. The Committee reiterates that it is illegal to install air conditioners in the Boys quarters. Air conditioners already impounded must be recovered by the owners on the payment of N5,000.00 to the Cash Office within six weeks after which they would be disposed of. 8. Occupants are once again reminded to register persons living in their Boys quarters at the Estate Office, by providing information on their identities and passport photographs. 9. The Committee noted that many occupants are in the habit of exploiting the lapses in the system to evade the payment of rent. The onus is on the occupants to check their respective pay slips and ensure that the appropriate rent is paid. Failure to do this would mean deliberate intent on the part of the occupant to defraud the university. Henceforth, all complaints made to the SSHC must be accompanied by a photocopy of the most recent pay slip of the occupant. Thank you Omotayo O. Ikotun (Mrs.) Registrar
