July 9, 2013 Dear Parents of East High Freshmen, The Common Core State Standards of Mathematics (CCSSM) call for the use of appropriate technology. Many schools have adopted that their students provide a handheld device in their math and science classrooms. Beginning this fall, we will bring this technology into our school in order to offer competitive, technology-rich lessons to students. Providing the best tools for student success is a top priority for the mathematics and science teachers at East High School. Therefore, it is highly recommended that all freshmen have a TI-Nspire™ CX Graphing Handheld, for the 2013-2014 school year. This device comes with computer software for Geometry, Statistics, Spreadsheets, and Graphs with a bright, backlit full-color screen. It will align content and instructional resources to teach students effective mathematical and science practices for all four years of high school through college. Students will be able to create and save computer files on the TI-Nspire™ and share those with their teacher, classmates and home computer. Most importantly, it has a very long rechargeable battery life, so does not require battery purchase. Your TI-Nspire™ purchase will include the handheld, cover, USB adapter and cord, handheld to handheld connection cord, student software for PC or Mac®, and user manual. In addition, the TI-Nspire™ is approved for use on the SAT, ACT, AP and IB® exams. Research shows that significant improvement in scores were recorded when students used the TI-Nspire™ on national, state and school-level exams (education.ti.com/research). Students who purchase a TINspire™ CX handheld can also download free SAT and ACT practice questions from the The Princeton Review™ for use on their handheld and also access $25 worth of minutes free from Tutor.com. To ease the pressure of decreasing budgets, and overextended schedules, we will have representatives selling the TI-Nspire™ to our student body during fall registration for $123.06 (plus tax) at East High School. This price is lower than any offered in stores or online. Additionally, you can order a TI-Nspire™ online from the representative at http://www.valleybusinessmachines.com and choose the link with the NspireCX for Back to School. Staff will be on hand to answer questions, help you navigate your device and demonstrate some of its software capabilities at registration. If you are unable to afford a handheld, attached you will find a loan form that can be submitted to administration to determine if you are eligible for our loan program. Mathematics Department TI-Nspire™ CX Graphing Handheld Loan Agreement
The TI-Nspire™ CX Graphing Handheld can be rented from EHS for a $50 deposit, of which $20 will be refunded if the handheld is returned at year end in good, working order along with all handheld accessories. Should the handheld be lost or damaged, the student/parent is responsible for paying back the full price of the handheld ($140). Both student and parent signatures below indicate they are assuming responsibility for the handheld and all associated components (cover, USB adapter and cord, handheld to handheld connection cord, software disk and user manual.).
