A Message From Freeholder John C. Bartlett, Jr. n behalf of the Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders, I welcome you to the Spring 2010 issue of Out & About Ocean County, A Free Newsguide to Arts & Heritage Events.

On March 16, we will be hosting a county wide Arts and Heritage Summit. The public is encouraged to come and share their vision of the needs and aspirations for the future of arts and heritage in Ocean County. Only the second such program in Ocean County history, this planning session will be lead by a nationally recognized expert in the field.

I am pleased to announce that we have received notice of a grant for $49,500 from the New Jersey Historic Trust for Cedar Bridge Tavern, now owned by Ocean County and under the care of the Ocean County Department of Parks and Recreation. Over 200 citizens joined us on December 27th for the annual ceremony recognizing the last documented land engagement of the American Revolution.

Ocean County art and history non-profits have suffered significant reductions in state funding and therefore loss of staff and programs.

Even so, the arts are surviving in Ocean County for the Spring of 2010. Maritime art will be showcased in Bay Head, Toms River, and Tuckerton. The Ocean County Library Student Film festival will take place in May. The Ocean County Teen Arts Festival will take place this Spring under the able leadership of Roberta Krantz of the Ocean County College. I am pleased to highlight an exciting program administered by the New Jersey Institute for Disabilities at the Toms River Adult Training Center, SEE (Special Eyes on the Environment). We have begun our efforts to recognize the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War (1861-1865). Ocean County was formally established on January 15, 1850. Citizens from Ocean County served with distinction and valor during the four long years. Ocean County residents volunteered on the steps of historic Court House #1 in Toms River and the Old Stone Store in Manahawkin among other places. I hope you are able to get out and enjoy the arts and history offerings for the Spring of 2010.

Sincerely,

“Nets” by Alaysia Artist from the SEE Program
