“I’m Alaska Grown. Do I get a sticker?”
This time last year, the Fairbanks area faced the likelihood of school closures, increased unemployment and falling property values as a result of military budget cuts. Things turned out differently. In 2013, the military instead announced growth in the Interior, even as downsizing continues across the Department of Defense in general. Why was the Interior spared much of the pain? side, the future of 4,000-soldier-strong 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, was in jeopardy in 2013 as the Army made plans to shrink its force and consolidate its units.
Schaeffer Cox’s appellate case has consisted largely of a public argument with his attorney about whether he is delusional. Cox, a former Fairbanks political candidate and militia leader, is in his third-year of a 26-year sentence for a conviction of conspiring to kill federal employees. He’s asking U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to reassign him his old lawyer and to consider evidence not presented at his trial that he says will exonerate him. C o x ’s c o u r t - a p p o i n t ed attorney, Seattle-based Suzanne Elliott, said Cox’s court filings aren’t helping his appeal. She’s asking a judge to schedule a competency hearing before the judge responds to any motions filed by Cox. She said she’s “mystified” that Cox’s mental state didn’t get brought up earlier in the case.
