DiEthicones have a much broader organic compatibility than dimethicones permitting formulating with common raw materials used in sun care, including hydrocarbons, Water Phase esters, waxes, and sunscreens.

DiEthicones maintain DiMethicones beneficial properties of excellent slip, spreading, gas permeability, and water proofness due to similar physical properties, yet DiEthicone possess greater compatibility with common suncare and cosmetic ingredients.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Low surface tension enables the DiEthicones to spread easily on the skin and act as a lubricant and detackifying agent. In sunscreens, a small amount of DiEthicone is useful to reduce the tack of materials such as Octocrylene. DiEthicones provide more than the typical silicone “slip”. They give an emolliency, a non-greasy sensation with a silky dry feel, and more cushion than traditional Dimethicones of equal viscosity. Additional benefits of DiEthicone in sun care include hydrophobicity yet non-occlusivity, and permeability to gases including water vapor which results in a more comfortable feel. DiEthicones are inert and chemically stable, non-toxic, non-irritating, and non-sensitizing.

WETTING PROPERTIES Wetting properties were evaluated by preparing pigment grinds in DiEthicone and DiMethicone of equal viscosity. A better wetting vehicle will be more efficient in displacing adsorbed gases from the pigment surfaces. This in turn will produce a grind with lower viscosity. DiEthicones produce dramatic reductions in grind viscosity for dispersions of silane and siloxane modified inorganic pigments or treated and untreated organic pigments.
