Barcelona Bound
It’s not often that a new trade show launches, especially one offering a totally unique buying experience, which is why there is so much interest in the new event being held in Coventry this October by the organisers of Chic. Fashioned on the boulevards of Barcelona, Boutique will feature glass ‘shop front’ stands, covered walkways, chandeliers and water walls. Extravagant, sophisticated and glamorous it may be, but will it attract the buyers? Show organiser, Mark Greenhalgh, seems to think so and has timed the show directly after Mipel in Milan for forward ordering. Find out more about the show and its exhibitors from page 31. As official media partner to the show, we’ll be there with the most recent issue of the magazine, so please pop along to meet the team.

NEW AWARDS TARGET DESIGN STAFF UK-based professional pattern-cutters, garment technologists and samplemakers are being urged to take part in a UK-wide campaign to identify the top 50 skilled people in the fashion and textiles industry. The “Behind the Seams” campaign has been launched by Skillfast-UK, the Sector Skills Council for fashion and textiles, to draw attention to the unsung heroes of the fashion and textiles trade, whose creative talents, technical ability and time-served craftsmanship go into producing successful businesses and international brands. Skillfast-UK is also hoping that the campaign will highlight the need to recruit and train a minimum of 40,000 new employees over the next five years, to replace those leaving through retirement. Speaking at the launch of the campaign, Linda Florance, chief executive of Skillfast-UK, said: “There are 79,000 fashion and textiles enterprises in the UK, and they create some exceptional creative designs. But creativity needs to go hand in hand with technical ability, and all too often the back-room staff members go unrecognised. Behind the Seams will celebrate the skilled individuals who are the backbone of our sector, and we will use the results of the campaign to lobby politicians for more support to develop the skills of the next generation of employees.” The top 50 nominees UK-wide will be invited to receive their Award at a major event in London on 11th November, attended by key politicians and fashion figures. UK-based design agencies can nominate a technically-skilled employee for a Behind the Seams Award online, at www.skillfast-uk.org/bts where they will be asked to explain, in a hundred words, why their employee is a hidden hero when it comes to skills.
This season the Steven Harkin Design team have selected hot red and black, patent leather for their new workbag design, the Barbara XXL, an oversize version of their bestseller Barbara, as well as the Kylie, a clutch bag inspired by the company’s fellow Australian artist. In preparation for Top Drawer Autumn, a messenger bag, a new clutch and small purses were developed in the company’s Essex workshop and will be presented in a gorgeous classic or stonewashed finish, with patent leathers from Italy in a rich colour palette of green, lemon, sky blue, purple and red wine along with the traditional selection of total black, red hue, vintage brown and the new cognac and sand shades. Launched in 2006, Harkin’s niche bags now sell in cosmopolitan cities across Europe and in 25 independent UK boutiques, as well as in a luxury department store in New York. Wholesale prices start at £60. Another recent launch from Harkin is Pod, a small, across-the-body bag featuring a detachable aluminium handle and a long shoulder strap in order to allow the bag to be worn on a belt. The handmade range stands out from the crowd of big brand bags, with the clean and sculpted lines that are Harkin’s signature. Originality and longevity characterise these futuristic, yet retro bags, which are classic enough not to date. Further details are available at the website www.stevenharkin.com.

Home & Gift, Harrogate reports positive trading levels Clarion Retail has announced that Home & Gift, Harrogate in July was a huge success, providing an inspiring visitor experience. The show exceeded the expectations of many of its high-quality exhibitors, who continue to thrive despite today’s challenging retail climate. The overall visitor figure for 2008 is still awaiting an ABC audit, but is expected to be 10,748, a slight drop from last year. However, the show organisers have reported that the number of Indigo Club and Indigo Gold visitors has increased by 15%, indicating that the quality of visitors to the event is strong and on the rise. “We are delighted that buyers and suppliers have given the show a strong vote of confidence, especially given the current climate within the retail industry. This gives us a strong platform to attract new business, plan our continued investment in marketing and continue to deliver a show that really does remain constant as the industry’s favourite” commented Joanna Bush, show director. Next year Home & Gift, Harrogate will take place from 19th-22nd July 2009. For further details access www.homeandgift.co.uk.
NEW CONCEPT OF GDS MET WITH ACCEPTANCE The new concepts of the Dusseldorf shoe fair duo GDS, the international event for shoes and accessories, and Global Shoes, a leading trade show for sourcing, has been received very well by both trade and the industry. Most exhibitors and visitors agree that the reorganised hall layout and rearrangement of exhibitor neighbourhoods has noticably stimulated the trade fair business. According to preliminary counts approximately 33,000 buyers visited the fair grounds, with 6,500 of them attending Global Shoes. This means that both shows closed almost on par with last year, thereby standing their ground despite the current tight market situation. Almost one in two visitors to GDS came from abroad, and at Global Shoes the number was even higher standing at 55%. Altogether 1269 exhibitors from 40 companies presented their footwear fashions for spring/summer 2009. Next year GDS will run from 13th-15th March 2009, with Global Shoes taking place from 12th-14th March 2009. For further details visit www.gds-online.com or www.globalshoes-online.com.
IJL thrives despite the credit crunch At IJL 2008, exhibitors and visitors alike reported consistently positive responses to the show, which featured a sparkling new look and enjoyed the presence of serious retail buyers who were intent on positive business transactions. IJL’s investment in a new show layout with a more open floor plan and clearly identified product destinations featured the largest ever collection of both UK and International exhibitors from over 30 countries. The Boulevard, The Avenue and the new mezzanine level devoted to the Design Gallery, alongside an agenda of seminars and trend information. Eight IJL Exhibitor Awards were presented for excelling in various categories, from Best Newcomer to New Product and Overall Contribution to the Show. Winners included Consortia and Gladstone Jewellery. Commenting on the show, Syreeta Tranfield, Exhibition Manager, stated: “The show has been a real success and the overall feeling from exhibitors is that it has been extremely productive. Despite being slightly lower on visitor numbers (compared with 2007) by just 300 people, the feedback is that business was thriving at IJL, which is very encouraging. International Jewellery London is organised by Reed Exhibitons and will take place next year at Earls Court 2, London from Sunday 6th – Wednesday 9th September 2009. my way
I did it Having had a long and varied career, firstly in Higher Education, then in overseas aid and the UK voluntary sector, Julie Peel decided that it was time for her to do something very different. With a background in finance and a diploma in 3D design, she felt this a combined knowledge made good grounding for a jewellery business. Initially, she joined forces with a friend, but it soon became clear that they each wanted to take the jewellery business in two quite different directions, so Julie progressed with her own, very individual jewellery label, zigzag. Specialising in unusual and exciting silver and gemstone jewellery for women, Julie aims to offer an exceptional and beautiful product at reasonable prices, combined with excellent customer service. Every purchase comes beautifully boxed and gift wrapped, with individual silk pouches in every imaginable colour and pattern, made by a ladies’ cooperative in Jaipur. We caught up with Julie to find out more about the business… What direction did you decide would be most beneficial for your business? I was most interested in developing exciting individual pieces which would appeal to women who buy jewellery for themselves, as they are much more adventurous in their choices of individual designs, stones and colour.
22 ATTIRE
I am just not interested in mass-produced, mass-marketed brands, and nor, I believe, are most independent-minded women. Brands are fine for clothing, but jewellery should be as individual as the woman who wears it. Nor am I much good at small and delicate. So many other jewellers do that perfectly well and what I wanted was to be bold, exciting and different, but also affordable and accessible, with great customer service and a wonderful shopping experience. It seemed to me that there was a lot of scope in the High Street to introduce something fresh, new and exciting. What was behind the decision to name the brand zigzag? It is a snappy name, which incorporates the chemical symbol for silver – Ag. The shape of the letter ‘Z’ has a lot of impact, and is a great design focus for signage and packaging. Tell us a little about the initial opening and subsequent expansion of your stores… In 2004, with the small amount of capital I had built up from my initial endeavours, I opened a shop in Barnes, South West London, which seemed a great place to find the kind of woman my jewellery would appeal to. The demographic there is exactly right for what I wanted to do and we had a tremendously successful first year. That same year, I opened our second shop in Farnham, Surrey, a really beautiful market town, full of lots of little independent shops and with a very similar demographic to Barnes. The following year was one of consolidation and
A desire to create individual pieces of jewellery that are bold, exciting and different, but also affordable and accessible, was the motivation for Julie Peel, Director of zigzag london. We spoke to her about the great success she has enjoyed with her business… just coming to terms with going from no shops to two shops in less than nine months – a progression, I imagine, almost as life changing as giving birth to twins! I have a great property agent, Andrew Reed of NB Real Estate, who helped me to develop a list of towns in which I would like a presence and we investigated anything suitable that came up in those locations. Many of my choices were picked up by the big multiples first, so we had to move quickly whenever something good came up. In 2006, we managed to find another two, opening in Epsom on Derby Day, and St Albans, (in the exclusive Christopher Place shopping centre), just five weeks before Christmas! Doubling the number of shops and opening the last in the middle of one’s busiest trading period is not a combination I would recommend – it really does stretch management and staff resources to their limit, but my staff are fantastic, and we managed to pull it off and had another brilliant year. Talk us through your latest collection in store… We are really concentrating on developing our range of one-off and bespoke gemstone necklaces, bracelets and earrings, which we design and make in-house. We have a huge range of semi-precious and precious beads, which we combine with silver and gold to make really gorgeous and unique pieces, either in response to customers requests, or just because we have had a good idea. It keeps all of us excited and interested in the product and I am constantly looking for new cuts, shapes, qualities, colours and combinations of gemstones for us to work with.
Retailer Interview
Where do you source materials? I travel a great deal, sourcing stones as well as individual pieces, from craftsmen and designer/ makers in Jaipur and Mexico, most of whom we have been working with since I began. To fulfil our own designs and provide materials for our individual and bespoke beaded necklaces range, I select precious stones directly from my trusted stone merchant. It is not commonly known that Jaipur is one of the best places in the world to find precious stones from all over the world and that craftsmen here have been making fantastic jewellery for centuries, including many of the wonderful Moghul pieces you will find in the V&A Museum. It is highly skilled work, performed by succeeding generations of craftsmen, in line with tradition. Everything is handmade, using some of the oldest traditional techniques known, yet producing modern 21st century designs to the highest finish. How often do you launch new lines? We are constantly bringing new jewellery into the shops, just by the nature of the way we work, but also because our loyal customer demands to be presented with something new each time she visits. Obviously, we do bring in seasonal pieces, especially for summer and for Christmas gifts, but there is a constant flow of new ideas and designs, which we release when they are available. What can we expect from your brand in 2008/2009? More new one-off, in-house designs in gorgeously coloured gemstones, more gold and some exciting new, very substantial, silver pieces. We have also been working with Lester Bowden, a ladies outfitter based in Epsom, with a number of outlets in the South of England, to supply a range of jewellery to be sold in the more exclusive, independent ladies clothing boutique. We hope to be rolling this out more widely across the country to selected outlets in the coming year. How do you promote your business? So far, we have mostly grown by word of mouth and recommendation, using direct marketing to
our existing customers, with lots of reward-based promotions. I don’t buy print advertising at the moment, as the direct approach has proved to be much more cost effective, but with the launch of our new website in September that will change, as it is now going to be worthwhile to advertise to bring us to a wider audience. Who designed your website and have you found it to be successful? Our current website was designed by Pete Wilder at Designers Collective. It was specifically designed to be an effective ‘business card’, with examples of our product and background information on the company. It gave prospective landlords and other partners a good idea of our values, approach and professionalism, and has served us very well for that purpose. Now, however, we are about to launch our new website, which will be an all-singing, all-dancing e-tailing operation. This has been produced inhouse, in collaboration with a very talented, (and extremely patient), software consultant and with crucial input from Pete, without whom I would not commit any graphic statement to paper.
into our fifth year, even in the challenging current economic climate. How often do you update your window displays? We completely renew the window displays at least monthly, but the product on display in the windows changes weekly and sometimes, on a daily basis. There is always something fresh and new to see in the window. What do you believe is the key to running a successful retail jewellery business? The rules are pretty much the same for all retailers; find the right location, know who your customer is, give them exceptional service, and build a great team around you. But most of all – you must make it fun, or it is not worth doing! A
What do you enjoy most about your role? Working with my staff as a team to develop new ideas, new opportunities and build on what we have achieved so far. They are an exciting and committed bunch, and great fun to be with. We have regular team meetings with all the staff from all the shops, taking a full day to review progress and plan for the future, followed by a good dinner. We all enjoy each other’s company, the day is a great motivator and an opportunity to celebrate successes and learn from mistakes. What has been your greatest success in the business so far? I would say coming from the Charity and Education sectors, with no practical retail or business experience, to building a successful business has been my greatest success. I went from nothing, to four shops in the space of two and a half years and I am still operating profitably going

Money Magnets Purses and wallets are often sidelined in store, but stocking these small products could make a big difference to your business. Read on to find out more... Fiorelli has introduced a fabulous new collection of leather and synthetic purses, which is a highly luxurious range of bright and classic black designs accented with fun and lively hues of cobalt blue, cerise pink, sweet pea green and pillar box red. The bright block colours add drama to the range, whilst hues of black tie the collection together and are highlighted with elegant fittings. The company stays true to its glamorous image with items that twinkle in metallic gold and silver tones, and even design staples are brought to life with refreshing colours and details. Compact coin purses and cute frames add a touch of fun and girlishness to the collection, more details of which are available at www.fiorelli.com.
A purse or a wallet holds many of the personal items that we hold dear, as well as the professional tools that we couldn’t live without. Credit cards, keys and photographs are all entrusted to this diminutive accessory, and many people would agree that a reliable purse or wallet is worth at least as much as the money that it holds, so why are they often found to be a neglected commodity? Time was that purses and wallets were functional possessions that were only purchased when they were needed rather than desired, and often featured a traditional and sophisticated leather finish. This approach may be due to the school of thought that says a product containing many important items needs to be sturdy and stylish rather than trendy and frivolous. Thankfully, this opinion has changed and, as a result, the market for these accessories has developed with it. Wallets have always been a classic gift for men and, even in this age of fashion-informed males, it is often the accessory that men are most likely to buy for themselves without prompting or style advice. Whilst women have all manner of handbags or clutch bags to choose from, on a day to day basis men tend to simply carry everything they need for an outing in their pockets and wallet, arguably making it one of the most important purchases a male customer can make. It is obviously essential then for men to have a great wallet which is
resilient and functional, but this point means that it is also important that the wallet has an attractive design to tempt a purchase which may not be made too often. Women, too, need a reliable and attractive product, but female consumers are probably more likely to buy a purse more frequently, and in greater numbers throughout their lifetime. Sophisticated and smart designs are, therefore, a fairly sure fire sale as a regular purchase as well as a crowd pleasing gift. Furthermore, purses provide a fantastic opportunity for both consumers and retailers to take a few style risks. A good quality handbag is often seen as an investment piece and, as a result, many consumers will pick a classic and timeless style that can last through the season. In contrast, a luxurious, high end purse could be a far less expensive indulgence, making it an accessory that can be updated in line with whatever trend may come along at an affordable price. Although purses and wallets are valuable accessories in their own right, these items are frequently bought as an add on sale with matching bags or primarily as gifts. In light of this, the best position for the products in store is at the point of sale. Indeed, products can be displayed imaginatively to capture consumer’s attention or to prompt an impulse buy.

Flexible Footwear We speak to Dominique McClain Barteet, founder of innovative footwear business, Onesole Shoes, about her launch into the UK market How did the idea for Onesole come about? I owned hundreds of shoes and traveled a lot with whole bags just for shoes. One day I was buying the same shoe in four different colours and thought: ‘the bottom is the same - it would be nice if I could just change the tops’. That is when I began to experiment with creating the shoe. How did you develop the initial collection? I put a lot of hard work into developing the initial collection, with plenty of trial and error to get it just right. The first ones were absolutely hideous, so I carried on working until I achieved a shoe I was happy with. The Onesole is a unique shoe concept that can be personalised, customised, and is ever changing with the fashion trends easily and affordably. When did the brand first launch and what was the initial response from retailers? We first launched the brand at small local trade fairs. Due to the phenomenal success of the brand, we now have agents worldwide. Do you have any protection over the concept i.e. patent, trademark, intellectual property? We have several patents pending, as well as some that have issued already. We also have numerous trademarks and copyrights for our prints, logos, and name.
28 ATTIRE
What type of retailer would be ideally suited to the brand? We are sold in a variety of stores such as high end boutiques, resort hotels, gift shops, airports, and luggage shops. The smaller boutiques really do well with them. Why did you decide to launch Onesole Shoes into the UK market? We have been getting a lot of orders for our product online from the UK, so we felt now was
the right time to launch into this market. Our first trade show in the UK was Pure, which took place in Olympia, London, not too long ago. What was the response from UK retailers at Pure to your shoe concept? We had great feedback from retailers at Pure, not just from the UK, but from many different countries besides. How often will you be launching new lines? We launch new lines every season for soles and every month for new tops. We have over 600 different top designs available at any given time for purchase. Are you planning to exhibit at any other UK trade shows? If so, which ones? We are researching which shows we will do in the future. We will definitely be back to exhibit in the UK to grow the brand. What can we expect from Onesole in the next year, and how do you plan to develop the brand going forward? It is our intention that Onesole will soon be a household name around the world. IN BRIEF Event: Boutique by Chic Location: Ricoh Arena, Coventry Date: 26th-28th October 2008 Tel: +44 (0)161 440 7200 Web: www.boutique-by-chic.com Show-weary buyers beware: the new kid on the block looks set to shake up the way you shop, forever! With its stylish layout based on the boulevards of Barcelona, wonderfully glitzy chandeliers and chic fountains, there’s no denying that Boutique by Chic is an exhibition with aspirations of grandeur. Added to this, visitors to the event will be rewarded with free champagne, blinis and complementary admission to the extravagant after-show party. But is it a case of style over substance? After-all, for Boutique truly tempt buyers it needs to produce names that may not be seen at any other UK-based exhibition. The organisers have answered this potential criticism by signing up some exciting European brands, many of whom are exhibiting for the first time in the UK and have chosen Boutique as the perfect platform for their product offering. “The Chamber of Commerce for the region of Naples, Italy, have confirmed the brands which will be showing in
32 ATTIRE
their pavilion at Boutique,” says Mark Greenhalgh. “These fine fashion brands, which are showing for the first time in the UK, encompass handbags, accessories, ladies’ day wear, men’s and ladies’ shoes, jewellery, gloves and scarves.” He
continues: “I think it is already possible that we have more Italian handbag and accessory brands in the show than any other UK event.” Aside from an excellent Italian exhibition presence, the trade show has also attracted some leading Spanish footwear brands. Taking place from 26th-28th October, the show sets itself after other autumn UK trade events, as it is predominantly for forward ordering. Most exhibitiors, therefore, will be showing their spring/ summer collections, as Mark explains: “Boutique is perfectly timed shortly after the Mipel fair to allow the manufacturers to produce final samples and distribute them to their international sales personnel. Buyers and sellers can now make their orders very early in the season without the risk of short delivery, and more essentially missing those key trends which, in my experience, are always the key collections.” Here at Attire Accessories, we’re delighted to be the Official Media Partner for Boutique.
