THE MARATHON OF HISTORY

Marathon Route It was born in Marathonas of our Greece in 490AC by the heroic effort of the day-runner Fedipides the soldier, who crossed the distance in order to announce to the Athenians the victory of the Greek, falling dead aﬅer the superhuman effort.

Today in every corner of the world thousands of Marathons take place, making the sport, the one with the most participants in the planet while in the same time the word “Marathon” is the only common word in every spoken dialect globally. The International Marathon “ALEXANDER THE GREAT” covers the route from Pella, the ancient capital of Macedonia and birthplace of the great Marshal, until Thessaloniki, the modern Greek metropolis of Macedonia. The Marathon that bears as a symbol, one of the most recognized faces of the humanity, ALEXANDER THE GREAT, isn't' just a big and international sports event, but also a route in the history, a route full of Greece, from the ancient Greek civilization until today. The first International Marathon “ALEXANDER THE GREAT” took place

on the 16th of April 2006 and was the result of a vision of sports, social and cultural bodies from every part of Greece. MEAS TRITON of Thessaloniki was licensed by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and was sponsored by the Hellenic Athletics Federation, the Hellenic Olympic Committee and the Hellenic National Commission for UNESCO, as well as with the collaboration of multiple bodies, institutional supports. MEAS TRITON of Thessaloniki organizes the top for North Greece event, with sports, social, cultural, environmental, touristic and above all historical importance, an event that is an excellent ambassador of our town, of Macedonia, and of our whole country, in the planet. The International Marathon is a member of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), and is incorporated regularly within the official annual international calendar, denying in the same time the right of every other Marathon in the globe to use the name of Alexander the Great.

OUR VISION Through the International Marathon “ALEXANDER THE GREAT” and its concurrent events, we want to bring out internationally a historical route, but also the importance of Thessaloniki and Macedonia, as a center of history, culture and sports.

In addition, we want to offer through the Routes of the racing schedule the opportunity to everyone, no matter what, to run or to walk, for the performance or for the joy of participation, aiming at the promotion of a healthy living standard and improving their quality of life.

For this reason the main purpose and our commitment is to provide exceptional services to all of our participants, volunteers, sponsors, and everyone collaborating with us, for the success of our big common effort.

MULTIDAY AND MULTILATERAL EXPERIENCE

STRATEGIC GOALS 2017 – 2020

Following the standards of the big international Marathons, the International Marathon “ALEXANDER THE GREAT” is for all the participants a multiday experience that with the essential notion, the sports and their participation to some of the running events, provides opportunities for tourism, participation in environmental actions, cultural and social events. The complete schedule of the organization will also provide important opportunities of commercial development for the sponsors and its supporters.

That the International Marathon “ALEXANDER THE GREAT” obtains the “status” and the “position” in the global sports scene, relevant to the big International Marathons and to the name that bears.

To be placed in the global scene as “The Marathon of History”. To be registered in the Greeks' conscience as the “National, Historical and Touristic Event”, fully exploitable for the promotion of the country, as well as for the financial development of Central Macedonia, making Thessaloniki the center of the sports tourism.

Empowered by the improved schedule of the parellel events and the continuous improvement of the quality of the provided services towards the runners, the goal is that it increases the interest of the Greeks for the Routes of Health and Power Walking and also the healthy way of living. Published University studies, showed that the level of happiness of the runners is increased having as a result the improvement of their quality of life. That the schedule of the concurrent events of the organization, of a social, environmental, cultural and commercial character, includes scientific events, in cooperation

with Greek and foreign universities so that it offers important benefits to the society of our town and in general of our country. To increase the competitive participations by 10% every year. To be established as the most important event with the greater social and financial influence in Northern Greece and one of the top annual events of the country, with a multiple significance and importance.

THE LIGHTING OF THE ALEXANDER FLAME OF THE MARATHON

FLAME

In the context of the organization, in cooperation with the Municipality of Pella and the Archaeological Museum of Pella, is celebrated the lighting of the Alexander Flame, within the archaeological site, in the Saturday morning, the day before the big Marathon race. Aﬅer the torch relay, the Flame of the Athletics and the Culture, and the Flame of the power of the human body and spirit is transferred to the White Tower of Thessaloniki.

In the evening of the same day the Alexander Flame, aﬅer its transit from all the points crossed by the Routes of the Racing Program, having an honorary reception by the scheduled events of the local bodies, ends up at its final destination, remaining in its altar, until the noon of the next day, until the finish of the last runner, heating up the hearts of the athletes and the viewers, participating in the big celebration of the Marathon of History.

In the context of the strategic goal for a social and financial impact of the organization in North Greece, but also the contribution of it to the financial development of Central Macedonia, is organized the MARATHON EXHIBITION (SPORTEXPO Marathon), during the three days period of the race. The exhibition is addressed to companies and bodies that are mainly related to the sportswear

and footwear, the nutrition, the health and wellness, the recreation and the tourism. The 20,000 participating runners and their companions, the staff of the organization and the volunteers (about 2000 individuals), the staff of the institutional supporting bodies, the sports fans of the race, as well as the visitors to SPORTEXPO Marathon, will visit its kiosks, inside the

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY In the context of the organization that is sponsored by the Hellenic National Commission for UNESCO take place parellel cultural events, social responsibility and social contribution events that complete the sports schedule. In the aforementioned events, the participants and supporters of the organization are given the possibility to have an active presence, applying by this way the program of social responsibility of the company or the body that they belong, or enriching their own

ENVIRONMENT

The O.C. of the “ALEXANDER THE GREAT” International Marathon in the context of its contribution to the society and the protection of the human values takes care of the actions that aim to the contribution of the confrontation of environmental and cultural issues.

Main purpose of it is to reduce to the minimum the ecological impact of the organization and in the same time to initiate the kids, “the tomorrow of our country”, that participate in the 1000m race, i.e. the students of the Elementary Schools, so that they get to love the environment and to be sensible towards it. Aﬅer their finish, the little students receive an envelope with the label “THE RACE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT IS A MARATHON”, in which a card is included that is made of paper containing organic seeds from aromatic plants, and this (the paper) is “planted” under a fine layer of soil and then it springs up, creating in a few days an excellent little garden with herbs such as Basil, Sage and Mint. The plantation of “seeds with paper” is by this way an entertaining activity at home, as well as for many children is their first gardening experience, while simultaneously observing their evolution, the children acquire new experiences and knowledge.

A program of collection – recycling of used sports shoes is applied, in collaboration with institutional and volunteering bodies and sponsors. Our slogan is “LET THEM RUN AGAIN”. All the runners have some sports shoes leﬅ in a shelf that they don't use anymore. Instead of them ending up in the trash aﬅer years, now they have the possibility to hand them over (provided that they can be used) in special bins that are placed in the Inscriptions Center. Then, aﬅer their condition is evaluated, they are given to groups of people that need them, not only in order to run and practice sports, but also to use them in their daily life.

Meanwhile, the sector of environmental responsibility organizes a recycling of all the materials that are used to cover the needs of the Runners (80.000 bottles, glasses and other equipment). The sector of Environment of the O.C. of the International Marathon “ALEXANDER THE GREAT”, in collaboration with the six Municipalities of the Marathon route and the institutional Supporters of its, proceeds to the cleaning of the streets and the edges of the streets (Marathon, 10.000m, 5.000m), something that is very important for the racing part of the organization, the aesthetic image of the areas and the health of the society. In collaboration with its sponsors proceeds to environmental responsibility actions such as tree plantings, creation and conservation of environmental interest sites, such as environmental awareness events, aiming to a better society, highlighting the high responsibility of management of the organization in every sector, with the respect for the environment that we inherited and the improvement of the quality of life as the main purpose.
