NGO News Civil Society plays an essential role in peacekeeping processes A new study and guidelines on civil society engagement were launched earlier this month by the Division of Policy, Evaluation and Training of the Departments of Peacekeeping Operations and Field Support (DPKO/DFS). Approved on 8 May 2017, the “DPKO/DFS
Guidelines on Engagement with Civil Society” remedy a lack of operational guidance identified in the study conducted in May 2016. The guidelines seek to help peacekeeping personnel engage more effectively with civil society and broaden the range of local actors they interact with to achieve mandated tasks and priorities. They explore the various phases of the engagement process starting with planning, identification, and mapping of civil society actors; interactions with civil society actors; and impact assessment. The guidelines also consider critical issues such as expectation management and the protection of civil society throughout the engagement process. Reporting by iSeek: http://bit.ly/2s2Kd7h
DPI-associated NGO Spotlight Sesame Workshop Sesame Workshop was associated with the United Nations Department of Public Information on 23 June 2017. Sesame Workshop is the non-profit media and educational organization behind Sesame Street, the pioneering television show that has been reaching and teaching children since 1969. Today, Sesame Workshop is an innovative force for change, with a mission to help kids everywhere grow smarter, stronger, and kinder. They are active in more than 150 countries, serving vulnerable children through a wide range of media, formal education, philanthropically-funded social impact programs, each grounded in rigorous research and tailored to the needs and cultures of the communities they serve. Their curriculum addresses children’s critical development needs with sophisticated use of media and a large dose of fun. Their programs deliver crucial lessons about health, emotional wellbeing, and respect and understanding to help kids grow up healthy, happy, and at home in their world. Sesame Street began 40 years ago teaching kids through television but it is now a worldwide educational phenomenon, reaching millions of children around the globe. The workshops programs are tailored to the unique needs of children, their country, and culture, created with local educators, advisors, and puppeteers, creating a local version of Sesame Street. Everything from radio to the latest in interactive media enhanced by research and innovation labs like the Joan Ganz Cooney Center are used on the ground, bringing lessons directly in the homes and classrooms of particularly vulnerable communities. Did you know that Bangladeshi 4-year-olds who watch their local version of Sesame Street have literacy scores that are 67% higher than those who don’t watch?
