PRINCIPAL'S SPEECH Colleagues and Students, We have gathered today to assess our achievements in 2011-12. While we have enough reason to celebrate what we have achieved, we must not be complacent about that. Success must inspire us to achieve more and must not make us oblivious towards our short comings. I take this opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of students, teachers and non-teaching staff in bringing laurels to our institution. We are pleased to have with us on this occasion Shri Raj Kumar Singh, an IAS officer of 1975 batch, as Chief Guest. Born on 20.12.1952, Shri Raj Kumar Singh, joined Indian Administrative Service in year 1975 and belongs to Bihar cadre. Shri R. K. Singh graduated in English Literature from St. Stephen College, Delhi University. He has a Diploma in Management from RVB, Delft (Netherlands) and a Degree in Law from Magadh University. He started his career as Sub-Divisional Officer in the year 1977. He worked in diverse fields of Land Revenue Management & District Administration, and was Joint Secretary, Agriculture & Cooperation. He was District Magistrate of East Champaran, and District Magistrate, Patna: Inspector General of Prisons: and Commissioner, Patna Division. He was Home Secretary, Bihar from 1997 to 1999.
Disaster Management Act. 2005 and the creation of the National Disaster Response Force. He was Principal Secretary I Road Construction Department in Bihar from December, 2005 to July, 2009. During this period, he was responsible for changing the face of roads in the State. When devastating floods struck the State in 2007 and the Kosi river breached its embankment in 2008, he was given additional charge of the Department of Disaster Management and he organized one of the largest rescue and relief-operations ever. He served as Secretary, Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence from July 2009 to June 2011. He was appointed as Officer on Special Duty in the Ministry of Home Affairs on 24 June 2011. Shri R K. Singh took over as Union Home Secretaryon30th June 2011. We also have with us Ms. Archna Arora, I.A.S. & Chairperson, New Delhi Muncipal Council as our Guest of Honour tonight. She is a Science Graduate with Master's and M. Phil Degrees in Social Work from University of Delhi. She also has a Diploma in French and Diploma in Labour Laws. She joined the Indian Administrative Service in 1983 and was allotted Union Territories Cadre. During the last 27 years in the service she has served in Goa, Arunachal Pradesh and Delhi. She has also done one tenure of 4 years in Election Commission of India and one tenure of 5 years in Govt. of India in the Departments of Personnel and Training and Atomic Energy. She was posted to Andaman 8: Nicobar Islands in July 2009. In these Islands she was heading the Departments of Health, Education, Art & Culture and was also Managing Director, ANIDCO.
In the Government of India, his first central deputation was in Ministry of Defence as Director during 1991-1994. Later became Joint Secretary, Ministry of Defence from 1994-1995. In the second instance on Central deputation he was posted as Joint Secretary (Centre State)/Joint Secretary (Disaster Management). During his tenure in the Home Ministry, he was involved in drawing up the schemes of Police Modernization, Prison Modernization, Strengthening of Fire Services, creation of National Disaster Management Authority and enactment of

among others. Before moving to Andaman & Nicobar Islands she was Commissioner Value Added Tax in Govt. of Delhi for 3 years. At present she is working as Chairperson, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) since 8.8.2011. We are fortunate to have amidst us our Chairman, College Governing Body, Shri Baleshwar Rai, Retired I.A.S. Officer, who is presiding over this function tonight. Mr. Rai is, a post graduate in ancient history culture & Archaeology from University of Cambridge U.K. He retired as Secretary (Coordination & Public Grievances), Cabinet Secretariat Govt. of Indian. (July 2005 to October 2005). He has been the Secretary, Dept. of Official Language. Ministry of Home Affairs (2004-05) Additional Secretary, Ministry of Labour & employment, Government of India (2003-04) Chief Secretary, Government of Goa (2001-03) Joint Secretary, Ministry of Power, Government of India (19992001) Commissioner, Sales Tax, Government of NCT, Delhi (1997-1998) CMD, Delhi Financial corporation, Delhi Chairman, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), new Delhi Deputy Secretary/ Director, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. Mr. Rai also occupied the positions of MD, Delhi State Civil Supply Corporation, Government of Delhi, Secretary-cumDirector of Education, Delhi. Director of Vigilance, Government of Delhi. Deputy Commissioner, Lunglei District, Mizoram. Joint/City Magistrate, Gorakhpur (UP). Shri Baleshwar Rai has given valuable contribution in the social sector. He has done appreciable work for abolition of child labour & bonded labour which are social stigmas on our society. He also worked as Chairman of the PRAYAS, an N.G.O. for rehabilitation of physically handicapped children. I welcome Mr. Raj Kumar Singh, Ms. Archna Arora and Mr. Baleshwar Rai once again for taking their valuable time out and being amidst us on this august occasion. I take this opportunity to apprise them about the achievements of our students, teachers, the departmental societies, the sports and cultural activities of our college in 2011-12. 5

KIRORI MAL COLLEGE IN NASA It is a matter of immense pride that NASA has yet again invited Kirori Mal College team to USA, this time to its Lunabotics project to be held in Kennedy Space Centre, Florida in May 2012. Over the last few years, our students have traversed diverse frontiers and come out trumps in their endeavours. Under the perfect guidance of our faculty advisor, Dr. Sumitra Mohanty, our college teams have been invited to prestigious events organized by NASA and have won laurels for the college. In the last few years, our team participated in NASA Moonbuggy events, along with several engineering colleges from across the globe, including some from India. Our team came out shining and won several awards and a lot of acclaim in the NASA circles. In other words, Kirori Mal College has made a mark in NASA. Moreover, we were the only team from India to win any award, despite being the only team from a non-technical Institute. In continuation to the legacy, and with a will to do something new and more challenging, we are going to NASA yet again, this time for the Lunabotics event. We can say with pride that ours is the only college in Delhi University where we have been sending undergraduate students abroad, that too to NASA, where they get an incomparable exposure. The NASA Lunabotics is an international event which challenges students to design and build a lunar excavator called 'Lunabot', i.e. a Lunar Robot which is able to traverse on the lunar terrain and collect lunar regolith samples. The lunabot must comply with several stringent rules provided by NASA to make it compatible with the lunar environment and test the validity of its design in an actual lunar mission. Such rules & demands make the project extremely challenging. Through this event, NASA aims at reviving interest of students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and provides a platform to the eager young minds to display their potential at the international 19

lunabot which is highly suited to work in harsh lunar conditions. This was made possible by a lot of hardwork, dedication and the will of our students to face challenges. The inspiration to participate in this event came from the successful venture of the teams from KMC in NASA Moonbuggy Race in the previous years. The event shall be held in Kennedy Space Centre, Florida, in May 2012. The team was formed under the mentorship of Dr. Sumitra Mohanty and consists of six students from B. Sc. Physics Hons. Initially more than 75 international teams were registered for the event. The teams were required to perform specific tasks in a stipulated period of time. As of now about 60 teams are left to participate in the final competition. If we take only Delhi into perspective, three teams, one each from IIT Delhi, Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology and Kirori Mal College were rearing to participate in the beginning. But today, Kirori Mal College is the sole Institution to keep pace with the rigours of this project. Our team has the inimitable distinction of being the ONLY non-technical team taking part in the competition. Now about the Lunabot designed and fabricated by our students: 22
Our Lunabot is an advanced version of a basic excavator design. It consists of a boom loader, an onboard collector bin and a final dumping system. The boom loader will collect the lunar regolith as the bot moves on the lunar arena. This regolith will be then transferred in the onboard collector bin capable of holding 140180kg of regolith. The collected regolith will be finally dumped in the bin specified by NASA where it will be weighed and points will be awarded to the team on this basis. In our design, we have implemented or rather invented a technique which is not conventionally used. We have used a device called 'Kinect' which was basically meant for gesture recognition in an Xbox. It consists of an Infrared laser projector, a CMOS sensor and a RGB camera and performs multiple tasks of depth recognition, obstacle avoidance and distance mapping. Recently, Microsoft corp. launched a model of Kinect which is compatible with Windows 7. So, we decided to use it to our advantage by modifying it a bit and using its gesture recognition technology for plane mapping. We are now in a state where our lunabot prepares a 3-D map of the surface on which it has to move and decides its own path thus avoiding obstacles and craters. In addition to the Kinect, we have provided the lunabot with 2 high resolution IP cameras to get a real time visual feedback of the operations of the lunabot. We have also developed an android application to operate the lunabot and hence can control our lunabot using any android device like a mobile or a tablet. However, we plan to operate it from a laptop at the NASA site owing to high reliability and a more powerful processor. We are grateful to the University of Delhi for financial support of rupees seven lakhs in terms of travel grant for the team, and to JCB 23
India Ltd for sponsoring rupees three lakh twenty-five thousand for construction of the bot. The transportation of the bot is being supported by the college. UK- INDIA EDUCATION AND RESEARCH INITIATIVE (UKIERI -2011) Kirori Mal College coordinated UK- India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI -2011) from September 6th to 8th September , 2011 on behalf of the University of Delhi in the college premises with Dr Seema Mehra Parihar , an Associate Professor as its coordinator. The programme was attended by 40 students with 20 each from UK and India It provided an opportunity to UK and Indian students to interact, learn and participate in new and unique experiences beyond their own communities. The programme was packed with programmes like lighting the lamp by Dr Kiran Nanda, Mr Rajib Ray and Mr Rudrashish; Breaking the Ice; Knowing your Buddy, Reading Shlokas Together, Knowing KMC; and number of lectures including Knowing KMC by Dr Ajay Ranjan, Mapping is Fun by Dr Seema M Parihar; Nanotechnology Today by Dr Anita Kamara; Physics in Everyday Life by Dr Rakesh Pandey; Political structure of India by Dr Rupak Dutta; Value of Time by Dr Benu Gupta and Geography of India by Dr Kaushal Kumar Sharma. The students also visited ISCKON Temple in Delhi where they saw the Vedic Expo and enjoyed the rendering of Bhagwad Gita through Robots and danced to the chanting of Hare Krishna music. In the evening on the same day they attended a dinner at the Principals residence and danced till late and enjoyed sumptuous Indian food. ACHIEVEMENTS OF FACULTY MEMBERS Dr. Anita Kamra Verma, Associate Professor, in the Department of Zoology, is actively involved in research and in 'Developing Novel Polymer Therapeutics as Nano-medicines'. Currently she has five grants from Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, University Grants commission and Indian Council of Medical research to support her research amounting to ~ 3 crores. She was an invited to chair the session in 2nd World Congress on Biomarkers-2011- Biomarkers and Drug Development, 12-14th Sep 2011, Baltimore, USA. She was also an invited speaker at the Multi Mega Event of 24th Annual National Conference of Indian Society of Atherosclerosis Research and International CME on Atherosclerosis, 24th-25thSep 2011, ISARCON 2011, JIPMER, Puducherry (India). She has been recognized as a Supervisor by BRS (Sciences) and guiding two students for Ph.D. DST project of Rs 32 Lakh on “Flow Injection Analysis”. Dr Seema Mehra Parihar, Associate Professor, Department of Geography, got a number of accolades in 2011-12. She completed the deputation as a Fellow at Institute of Life Long Learning (ILLL) , University of Delhi and joined back the college on October 31, 2011. In addition, at present she is a Joint Director of Developing Countries Research Centre at University of Delhi. As a Fellow, she not only initiated Geography as a Discipline at Institute of Life Long Learning (ILLL) for the first time, but also wrote an E-Lesson (Overview of Remote Sensing) and have coordinated 43 E-lessons for Undergraduate Geography Honours Course at University of Delhi along with multiple Quizzes . 29
She continued ahead with pursuing research in geospatial arena. She was granted two projects in this academic session as a Principal Investigator with one entitled “Devise a Grassroots Level Geospatial System for Climate Stress Management in Bhilangana Basin of Garhwal Himalayas” from the Department of Science and Technology , Government of India and another “Mapping Wetland Stress Pattern of East Kolkata Wetland Using High Resolution Remote Sensing Data” from the University of Delhi. She was also sanctioned another project entitled “Developing and Maintaining a portal for Geospatial Education and Training (GET) in India” in the capacity of a Co – Principal Investigator from Department of Science and Technology. She also successfully coordinated the IIRS driven Edusat Programme at University of Delhi on Basics of Remote Sensing, GPS and GIS for the fourth Consecutive time in collaboration with IIRS, Dehradun, ISRO, Department of Space and NNRMS. Innovative this time (2011) was the use of A-View Classroom as a learning space. She also coordinated the launch of Bhuvan, the web portal of ISRO at dcrc along with three workshops with one each on Open Source GIS; Using GPS and ENVI IDL and another on Hyper Spectral Images. She was also invited to present a paper at ISPRS COMMISION MEETING (ISPRS Commission TCVI , WG 4 ) and she presented her paper on “Geospatial Life Long Learning India". She was also invited to chair the sessions in two International Conferences. In addition, she was also invited to be a member of various Committees at national level outside the university set-up in 20112012. Besides, she also coordinated the UK- India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI -2011) at Kirori Mal College on behalf of the University of Delhi where 40 students actively participated for 3 days and published a news letter Beyond Borders. At personal level she moved to the second level of the Asharay Group at International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISCKON) and is attempting to learn Bhagwad Gita as it is.

GEOGRAPHY Department of Geography organised its annual geography festival GEOTIME on 27th and 28th February, 2012. The two day festival was well publicised within the students community of the various colleges through the creation of website and a promotional video. It was through the efforts of the students that this level of advertising was possible. On the occasion annual magazine GEOLINE, marking the endeavour of the talented students of the Geography Department was also released. It carried articles by students of Geography from various colleges of Delhi University as well as from Jamia Milia Islamia. The festival was formally inaugurated by our Principal, Dr.Bhim Sen Singh which was followed by lecture of Dr.Sushmita Sen on 'Techniques in Water harvesting' from Centre for Science and Environment. The event had plethora of activities which helped students to appreciate and learn geography outside of the classroom.
