PLANNING YOUR HOLIDAY 5

Arabian Peninsula Travel Tips

The hard part is over and you’ve decided where to go. Now it comes down to the organising. Sometimes it is the basic things that we tend to forget, so Qantas Holidays has compiled some tips to simplify your planning.

Climate

Ramadan

Straddling the Tropic of Cancer, the Arabian Peninsula’s climate is sub-tropical, with temperatures that vary from warm in the winter months to hot in the summer. Sunny blue skies prevail throughout the year and rainfall is infrequent. The weather in the Arabian Peninsula is mildest in the months of December through March. January is the coolest month of the year, with an average temperature of 18°C. The temperature starts to climb in April and continues to climb steadily to an average temperature of 40°C by August. The temperature begins to cool down in September with temperatures in November dropping considerably to 25°C.

The holy month of Ramadan is the most spiritual period for Muslims and the fast from dawn to dusk is one of its most important aspects. Cities do not close down during Ramadan, in fact it is an amazing time to experience the culture. Daytime is often quieter, business hours are generally shorter with restaurants and cafes screened off or closed out of respect for those who are fasting. You may also find that shops and markets will close early in the afternoon. Within many hotels and resorts, tourists may notice little difference, other than some alterations to restaurant operations. Virtually all the usual resort and tourist facilities and activities go on without change. Eating, drinking, chewing gum and smoking openly in public is prohibited by law, in daylight hours, during Ramadan. In the evening, cities come to life as people meet to socialise, visit with family and friends and go shopping. Public places will be busy well into the early hours of the morning. You will find that the hotels and restaurants pull out all stops during this time and main shopping centres and most large stores have a festival atmosphere, with some staying open late.

Outside banking hours, moneychangers operate between 4pm and 7pm in the evenings and at weekends. Credit cards are readily accepted in large shops and hotels and by an increasing number of traders in the souq. Most banks in cities and towns have ATMs.

No visa is required for entry into the United Arab Emirates for Australian passport holders. Please check the passport and visa requirements with your travel consultant or the appropriate embassy/ consular office before you travel. We strongly recommend that you purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy when you book your holiday.

Things to do

Visit Saadiyat Island

Enjoy Abu Dhabi shopping

From Abu Dhabi city’s famous Corniche to the Oasis City of Al Ain and the massive dunes of the western region’s Empty Quarter desert in Al Gharbia, culture, history and adventure are encapsulated in the emirate.

Just seven minutes from downtown Abu Dhabi and 20 minutes from Abu Dhabi International Airport, Saadiyat Island is undergoing remarkable transformation into a world-class leisure, residential, business and cultural hub of global proportions, housing the world’s largest single concentration of premier cultural assets. These will include the Zayed National Museum, Louvre Abu Dhabi and Guggenheim Abu.

Shopping is something of a national pastime in Abu Dhabi, perhaps because it is so diverse and, of course, tax-free. There’s everything from ultra-modern malls with the latest brands, to small, souklike outlets where you can buy traditional perfumes, handicrafts, spices and carpets.

Experience the architectural prowess of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, enjoy the peace and tranquillity of a stroll through Al Ain’s cooling oasis, learn about the ancient sport of falconry, experience an adrenaline rush on the world’s fastest roller coaster, or marvel at the history of an emirate dotted with ancient forts and historic sites – several of which have been listed as official UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

You can spend thousands of dollars on a bejewelled designer watch, or pick up a basic timepiece in a supermarket. You can splash out on an haute-couture designer outfit or buy fabric and have a local tailor make up your very own creation for a bargain price. All things luxurious can be purchased in Abu Dhabi including; art, carpets, gold jewellery and perfume.

Experience Al Ain A one-and-a-half-hour drive from Abu Dhabi city, Al Ain is one of the world’s oldest permanently inhabited settlements, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For stunning views of the city, drive, take a cab or, if you have the stamina, cycle to the top of Jebel Hafeet – a rocky height dominating the city – via a winding highway.
