Northwest Chess Press Release 2011‐02 October 10, 2011 Award‐winning Northwest Chess article and cover art available to download GM Yasser Seirawan and photographer Philip Peterson each won Chess Journalists of America 2011 annual awards for their contributions to Northwest Chess magazine. “Yaz,” a former U.S. and Washington State chess champion, won the “Best Historical Article Award” for his imaginative article “A Forgotten Chess Tale: Hapley’s Project” in the November 2010 issue, while Philip was recognized with the “Best Chess Art Award” for his March 2011 NWC cover entitled “Alekhine’s Gun.” The November 2010 and March 2011 issues are available for free non‐commercial use on the back issues page of the NWC website, http://www.nwchess.com/nwcmag/back_issues.htm. Congratulations! Synopsis: “A Forgotten Chess Tale: Hapley’s Project” is a 10‐page fictional story written by GM Yasser Seirawan. Charles Hapley, secretary/treasurer for a British chess club during the 1920s, invites world champion Capablanca to play a simultaneous exhibition. After arrangements are made for four 40‐board simuls at local clubs, circumstances intervene to allow Hapley himself to play on the last board, becoming the only player to defeat Capablanca. Includes an actual (or imagined) chess game! There is also an excellent cover photo of GM Seirawan by German photographer Jeroen van den Belt.
