Background • Despite error-prevention efforts, medication errors continue to harm millions of inpatients and result in billions of additional healthcare costs annually • Hospitals are continuously working to optimize their medication use process to decrease medication errors and meet national standards for patient safety • Most effective error-prevention strategies, according to ISMP target system changes rather than rely on human vigilance • Medication barcode scanning technology offers a strategy to improve medication administration accuracy

Preliminary Results Methods • Mixed method study design will be followed to evaluate BCMA implementation at Broward Health ERDs • Electronic Medication Administration Record (eMAR) documentation and follow up metrics reports will be created within discern analytics by information system analysts • Data will be manually filtered to exclude all out of scope cases

Purpose • Evaluate the implementation of Barcoded Medication Administration (BCMA) at four independent Emergency Departments (ERDs) in a 1500 bed multi-facility healthcare system

• BCMA implementation project leaders will be interviewed and qualitative methods will be used to note advantages of the BCMA implementation approach and challenges faced. Lessons learned will be captured along the process • Descriptive statistics will be used to characterize findings
