BackPack Program Filling the Gaps in Children’s Nutrition It is an important goal of the Central Virginia Food Bank to ensure that all children in our community have the healthy food they need to grow strong in body and mind. School breakfast and lunch and our own Kids Cafe program, only meet the needs of children five days a week. The BackPack Program provides food for the weekend to help meet children’s nutritional needs when these other programs are not available.

What is the BackPack Program? An effort of cooperation involving public schools and other community partners to provide chronically hungry children with additional nutritional support by supplying a weekend’s worth of food each Friday.  Each child will receive one bag consisting of six balanced meals including whole-grain cereals, protein-rich entrées, canned fruits and vegetables, milk and snacks.  Each BackPack is designed to provide the nutritional equivalent of two school breakfast and two school lunches - the very meals that a child who relies on these free or reduced-price meals through the school lunch program are missing on the weekends.

Where is the BackPack Program Available? In 2010-2011, the BackPack Program will be serving 2,000 children (12,000 meals) every weekend in 51 locations including schools and after-school programs in 10 jurisdictions including the cities of Hopewell (4), Petersburg (8) and Richmond (16) and the counties of Chesterfield (8), Dinwiddie (1), Hanover (1), Henrico (8), Lancaster (2), Louisa (1), and Middlesex (2).
