TRIPS SAINT PAUL’S CHURCH & WOODLAWN CEMETERY: Historic Sites in our Own Backyard NEW! Touch our past at two local historic treasures! Just in time for the Eastchester 350th Anniversary, we’ll visit Saint Paul’s Church, a National Historic Site in Mt. Vernon that tells the story of the development of colonial society and the road to the American Revolution and beyond. The 240year-old church is best known for its service as a Revolutionary War hospital in what was then Eastchester, while the current exhibition Saint Paul’s and the Civil War shares how the growing community handled the national crisis 150 years ago. We’ll stop for lunch at Arthur’s Avenue’s delicious Tra Di Noi. Then, explore the history, architectural treasures and natural resources of The Woodlawn Cemetery, a National Historic Landmark and one of the nation’s distinctive “garden cemeteries”. The walking tour will share an overview of the cemetery’s establishment in 1863 as well as highlight some of the impressive works of art and architecture nestled in bucolic splendor. Visit the memorials to icons of music, such as Miles Davis, Duke Ellington and Irving Berlin; marvel at the “forever homes” of individuals and families who shaped New York and the nation, such as F.W. Woolworth, Augustus Juilliard, Fiorello LaGuardia, and others. Trip includes extensive walking – wear comfortable shoes.
