From the CROA Board of Directors… The Board of Directors of the Celebration Residential Owners Association (CROA) provides vision and leadership for many of the qualities that make Celebration the unique and positive place it is. Building on the work of prior Boards and volunteer committees, the current Board of Directors is active with both existing resources and amenities, as well as envisioning new ones. Many of the ideas and work comes from you through attendance at Board meetings or committee meetings, volunteer work, responses to the quarterly resident survey, and informal conversations. Thank you for your engagement! The Board’s work has been extensive since its initial meeting in mid-March – five (5) public meetings of the full board through the end of April (all are recorded and available for viewing online)! Key to the Board’s work for this year are six strategic planning goals; in short, these encompass the Parks and Recreation Master Plan, Futuristic Growth, Communication, Partnerships, Quality of Life, and Administrative Issues. See the Celebration website (look under CROA) for more details on each of these. Also, please check out this issue of the Celebration News to see the results from the most recent resident survey. Some additional things about which you will be hearing more include the new athletic and recreation fields on the civic corridor, a revamped website, discussions about the Island Village development, and reviews of various procedures. The agendas for monthly Board meetings and various Board workshops are posted in advance; with these, you can see the variety of topics discussed, and get a sense of what is planned for our homeowners association. The Board continues to encourage your involvement in Celebration – come to Board or committee meetings, volunteer, and share your ideas! It’s the dedication, creativity, and thoughtful engagement of our residents, all within the spirit of community, that help make Celebration the special place that it is. A listing of the current Board of Directors can be found on page two of this publication or at www/celebration.fl.us/CROA.

Celebration Spotlight highlights a different resident every month, and provides a glimpse into the people who make this community so special.

This month our Celebration Spotlight gets to know Jim Bates Withers. Jim is no stranger to our community’s residents. He can often be found out and about, and always with a friendly smile. Jim can also be found lending a helping hand with Thriving In Place. Name: Jim Bates Withers Lived in Celebration since: 2014 The one thing in Celebration that I never get tired of: The cleanliness and beauty of Celebration, the hard work of all the maintenance workers and property owners that keep it beautiful. A key event in my life: When my girlfriend said yes and married me thirty-seven years ago, and four years later we had our wonderful son Chris. Plus I got two terrific brother-in-laws, Bob and Tom. Accomplishment I am most proud of to this point in my life: I really don’t like to talk about myself, but I guess it would be my work with my church, Thriving in Place, and the Celebration Community. One thing I want to be sure to do while I am still able: Is to help as many people as I can. Hobbies: I like to read; sometimes I read three to four books a week. I also enjoy woodworking, talking to people, and being with and going places with my wife. Book I would recommend: The Bible, my very favorite book.

If you have a suggestion of a resident for an upcoming Celebration Spotlight, please email us at [email protected].

Favorite Song: “Who Am I” Star who would play me in a movie version of my life: Alan Alda One thing people don’t know about me: I went to the Bishop School of Theology at Saint John’s Cathedral in Denver, Colorado. Five people, living or dead, I’d invite to a dinner party: Dad and Mom Bates, my grandfather and my two grandmothers. You have one opportunity to explain to a complete stranger why Celebration is special, what would you say: Definitely the people, they are the heart of Celebration. They are warm, caring, friendly, loving, and will definitely make you feel welcome. It is like a walk back in time, the houses have front porches with rockers and swings on them and the yards are meticulously attended to. The trees make a canopy over the streets, there are parks, trails, beautiful scenery everywhere you look, boardwalks, lakes, people riding bikes, running, holding hands as they walk along the lake’s paths. The Town Center has excellent restaurants, many shops, an ice cream shop, and a coffee shop. There are beautiful churches, schools and businesses. The architecture of the buildings is fascinating. When downtown I have seen my pastor taking morning walks, my doctor walking his dog, and friends drinking their coffee and having a pastry outside the bakery on the table there. You just have to come and see Celebration yourself.

Osceola County Sheriff ’s Office

Bike Riding 101 By Deputy Jerry Weiland, Osceola County Sheriff Office I think that we’ve made it through the brutal Florida winter. For those of you outside of Florida, I want to remind you that we had at least two or three days of freezing temperatures. But I digress. With our nice weather and the end of school nearing, I thought it a good time to remind, inform and otherwise educate you all in some bike riding and driving safety. But first some real and sobering facts. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations (NHTSA) 2015 stats, 818 cyclists were killed in crashes with vehicles in the United States. That averages over two people each day across the U.S and a 12.3% increase, from 2012 statistics. There were also 45,000 injured. The number for injuries is only for accidents reported to law enforcement. I would guess the injury number is much higher. Most bicyclist deaths occurred most often between 6 - 9 p.m. The vast majority of bicyclists killed were male (88%) and the largest number of males injured were between 20 to 24 years old. Thirty seven percent of fatal bike crashes involved alcohol and 27% of riders killed in 2015 had a blood alcohol content of .01% or greater. About one in five bicyclists (21%) killed in crashes had blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) of .08. Florida usually ranks at the top when it comes to cyclist deaths. Florida was number one for bicyclists’ deaths in America for 2015, with 150 riders killed. California had 129 deaths and every other state had less than 50 people killed. This isn’t the category we like to win. I can go on and on giving you statistics why being a safe rider and driver is vital, but I think you may already see the importance of having a little reminder about bike safety. As you might expect, when a crash occurs between motor vehicle and a bike, it is the cyclist who is most likely to be injured or killed. Florida has many bike laws, 316.2065 is the Florida Statute number for bicycle regulations. Listed here are excerpts of that statute. For the full statutes, you can go to http://www.leg.state.fl.us/STATUTES/. Every person propelling a vehicle by human power has all of the rights and all of the duties applicable to the driver of any other vehicle. Essentially if you are riding a bike on the road, you must comply with the same laws that apply to vehicles. THIS MEANS STOP SIGNS. You must also ride with the flow of traffic. All 50 states have a similar law to this. A bicycle rider or passenger who is under 16 years of age must wear a bicycle helmet that is properly fitted and is fastened securely upon the passenger’s head by a strap and that meets the federal safety standard for bicycle helmets. Any person operating a bicycle upon a roadway at less than the normal speed of traffic shall ride in the lane marked for bicycle use or if no lane is marked for bicycle use (we have no bike lanes in Celebration), as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway. There are a few exceptions to this as: when overtaking and passing another bicycle or vehicle proceeding in the same direction, when preparing for a left turn or when reasonably necessary to avoid any condition or potential conflict. Persons riding two abreast may not impede traffic when traveling at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and shall ride within a single lane. Please be aware of vehicles behind you and move to riding single file to allow them to pass.

Every bicycle in use between sunset and sunrise shall be equipped with a light on the front exhibiting a white light visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the front and a light and reflector on the rear each exhibiting a red light visible from a distance of 600 feet to the rear. A person riding a bicycle upon and along a sidewalk, which is legal in Florida, or across a roadway upon and along a crosswalk, shall yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian and shall give an audible signal before overtaking and passing such pedestrian. Parents, please remind your kids of this one. I have gotten complaints about this. I save the best one for last. No parent of any minor child and no guardian of any minor ward may authorize or knowingly permit any such minor child or ward to violate any of the provisions of this section. This means parents or guardians can be ticketed for allowing their kids to break the laws.

Some other tips for drivers Remember that people on bicycles have the same rights as you behind the wheel. Yield to bicyclists as you would motorists and do not underestimate their speed. This will help avoid turning in front of a bicyclist traveling on the road or sidewalk, often at an intersection or driveway. In parking lots, at stop signs, when backing up, or when parking, search your surroundings for other vehicles, including bicycles. Drivers turning right on red should look to the right and behind to avoid hitting a bicyclist approaching from the right rear. Stop completely and look left-right-left and behind before turning right on red. Obey the speed limit, reduce speed for road conditions and drive defensively to avoid a crash with a cyclist. Give cyclists room. Do not pass too closely. Pass bicyclists as you would any other vehicle—when it’s safe to move over into an adjacent lane. Florida law states to give riders at least three feet space when you pass them.

Some tips for cyclists Select or ride a bike that is the proper fit for you. If buying a bike, ask questions of the sales person and make sure the bike is properly put together. Make sure you feel comfortable riding a bike to operate is safely, especially near vehicles. Ensure your bike is working correctly. Remember to check the A-B-C’s, Air, Brakes and Cables/Chain before each ride. Have the proper equipment, including lights, helmet and reflectors. Wear light colored or reflective clothing also if out in the evening or at night, even when using the lights. Carry any items in a backpack, basket or carrier to leave your hands on the handlebars and brakes. Always look ahead on the road for hazards like potholes or leaves. Assume the drivers do not see you and take appropriate actions to avoid being hit. Avoid texting or covering both ears with headphones with music blaring. Remind yourself that you’ll most likely be losing the battle if involved in a crash with a car, regardless whose fault it is. Starting with Florida’s nice year round weather then throw in an abundance of trails, bunches of tourists not knowing our laws (or just blindly sightseeing), local drivers and riders who are disrespectful or just don’t care, along with an increasing population, seem like a recipe for disaster to happen. Does that sound familiar? Celebration has the same exact mixture. I really hope both drivers and riders do their parts to make this the one of the places in Florida without a statistic. Please be safe and be respectful of others.

COMMUNITY ASSESSMENT Celebration Residential Owners Association Winter, 2018 The fourth quarterly survey of residents was offered during February, 2018, from February 1 to February 22. Building on the responses from the three previous survey, and the positive regard held for doing such surveys among residents identified with the Fall, 2017 survey, this survey addressed two specific topics: a community building and community activities and events. These quarterly surveys of Celebration residents began during May, 2017, and are conducted and analyzed by the Board of Directors of the Celebration Residential Owners Association (CROA). As background, the intent of these brief outreach efforts to the community is provide residents with the opportunity to offer input and suggestions on a variety of initiatives and issues, of interest to them and to the Board of Directors. Each survey includes both quantitative, scaled items as well as open-ended opportunities for comments. The results of each survey are shared at the subsequent CROA Board meeting and are published in The Celebration News and on the Celebration website. Further, these results are shared with the CROA Board of Directors and the management personnel for review and incorporation in decisions and planning. Included in this report for the February survey are the results for each of the two topics. These follow the methodology and response rate. A copy of the survey and its invitation are included at the end of this report.

Methodology and Response This fourth quarterly survey was designed by CROA Board members. It was distributed to 3,221 homeowners – this represents all those for whom an email address was on file with the Town Hall records. Distributed by Town Hall staff on behalf of the CROA Board, the survey used Survey Monkey software for distribution. SPSS software was used for the analysis. The survey responses were submitted to one CROA Board member for analysis, review and reporting; a second Board member collaborated for data analysis of the qualitative responses and overall report preparation. The survey was available from February 1 to February 22, with reminders sent to non-respondents on February 10 and February 19. Notices were also placed in the Friday Flash. With the distribution of 3,221, a total of 2,865 were delivered; 1,863 were opened, representing 65% of the surveys delivered. Of these opened surveys, 832 were completed – this provides a 44.7% response rate of the emails opened, and 29.0% of those emails delivered. The reason for the lower delivery rate when compared with the contact invitations is that there were 232 bounce backs, and 124 residents who had opted out of this and future surveys. The rates for this fourth survey are slightly lower than, yet similar to, those from the three previous surveys, and are summarized in the table below.

Community Building / Community Center The CROA Board determined it would be helpful to gather some preliminary insights from residents about the proposed community center / community building. With interest expressed by Osceola County leadership regarding potential partial or full funding for such a facility and resource (based on size and need), it was deemed timely and appropriate to begin some data collection regarding this resource. As noted in the survey’s instructions, these were solicited to gather some initial thoughts from residents. The section overview stated, “With the August, 2017 resident survey, responses demonstrated an interest in having community meeting spaces and a community center. Since then, the CROA Board has approved the purchase of property in the Civic Corridor (between the Dog Park and CCDD building and the planned athletic fields). In addition, Osceola County has expressed interest in a community center. To help with discussions about this resource, it will be helpful to have some initial thoughts about its features.” Residents were asked to rate each of thirteen items on a six-point scale; the question was worded as “How important is each of the following for a community facility such as this?” The scale ranged from 0 = ‘not important at all’ to 5 = ‘extremely important.’ A section for open-ended comments was also provided. The graphic the follows shows the respondents’ results based on this scale. Their responses ranged from a high of 3.16 to a low of 1.88, on the 0 to 5 scale. The highest ratings were for exercise and recreation facilities, multipurpose spaces and gathering places; lower items were for tutoring and computer workstations.

General Positive Comments

3

Balanced varied interests

The responses to this question are provided in the following three illustrations. With the first graphic, it is clear that the most positive reactions were found with Food Truck Friday, Founders day Activities, the Porch and Yard Sale, Movie Nights and July 4 Activities. The most negative reactions were around Halloween. The following two graphics provide further detail about these same sixteen activities or events; these two offer the actual responses for each of the items, showing what percentage of the 832 respondents actually specified individual responses (such as to “not offer” or “not offer unless changes occur”). This type of illustration is particularly helpful with question choices such as those offered, as a typical Likert scale was not used. For example with Food Truck Friday, 3.8% said to not offer this (whether with changes or at all), and 64.7% want keep it as is; with Halloween, 22.1% wanted to not offer this, while 38.5% wanted to keep it as is.

Community Activities and Events The second question’s topic focused on the wide variety of events and activities available in Celebration. As noted in the introductory language for the question, some of these are planned and sponsored events, and others occur without planning or with resident sponsorship; further, the planned, sponsored events have varied organizers. The intent of this question was to glean residents’ views and suggestions on these events; concerns and complaints had been shared with CROA Board members and through survey comments, so a more orchestrated approach was deemed appropriate for understanding further these events. The background narrative for this question was: “A wide variety of activities are offered in Celebration by various groups and organizations; these include CROA, Lexin Management, and other groups and organizations. Other “events” are not formally organized, yet occur in Celebration. Discussions are underway with various leadership groups to address the aims of these event sponsors and the needs of Celebration’s residents, with particular attention to safety, security, traffic and parking issues. These discussions will be aided by homeowners’ views on specific activities. Please note that the goal is to have improvements (not necessarily solutions) with identified concerns associated with these activities/events.” Respondents were asked to record their assessment to this question: “For each of the following, please select the choice that best describes your feeling about the event.” Five choices were provided: 1 = I believe this should not be offered”; 2 = “I believe I should not be offered unless changes are made (noted below)”; 3 = “Neutral – it doesn’t matter to me”; 4 = “I believe this should be offered, but with suggested changes (noted below)”; and 5 = ‘I believe this should be offered; no changes are needed.”

9 CELEBRATION NEWS - May 2018

As with all four resident surveys, respondents were provided with the opportunity to provide written comments. A total of 127 individuals of the 832 respondents (15.5%) provided one or more comments. These comments are organized within several general clusters, summarized in Table 2.

Celebration Residential Owners Association, Winter, 2018 Tables 3 and 4 summarize the written comments about these activities and events. Table 3 focuses on the general comments, and Table 4 illustrates comments that have to do with specific events. The primary general comments regarding all the events have to do with traffic; these are often paired with parking comments as well as those about safety and security. With these comments, a total of 238 (or 28.6%) of survey respondents provided a written comment. Since many respondents included comments that related to more than one cluster, the number of total comments among clusters exceeds the number of respondents.

Demographics The final question was on the demographics of the respondents; this asked them to identify their village of residence. Table 5 summarizes these, and also includes the responses based on the previous three surveys. As documented below, the overall distribution of respondents is roughly similar across the four surveys. With over 800 residents taking the time to respond, and many with detailed comments, the CROA Board and management personnel are aided with the insights and perspectives. The thoughts and comments regarding the community center are helpful for the current discussions about this proposed amenity. Further the details and observations of residents about many of the larger-scale events occurring in the community, whether sponsored or ad hoc, are helpful for the various sponsoring agencies, community planners, law enforcement and others. These observations will be shared with the various entities to aid their efforts in the future. Just as has occurred with each of the previous three surveys, the results will be shared with those in leadership positions that affect Celebration, primarily the CROA Board and Town Hall Staff, the CCDD Board of Directors and staff, and Osceola County leaders. Since one of the questions focused on events sponsored in the downtown area of Celebration, those suggestions will also be shared with Lexin, the owner of that area and also the sponsor of many of those events. The CROA Board further thanks residents who provide their comments and offer their responses to these surveys. These opinions are most helpful as those in leadership and volunteer positions continue to seek improvements with the quality of services and resources in Celebration.

Following 20 years of service to Celebration, Vice President Pat Wasson has announced her retirement from CCMC. “Words cannot begin to express the level of respect and appreciation we hold for Pat,” says Eastern Division President Joe Cook. “Her passion for serving homeowners and mentoring team members is just a small piece of her professional legacy. Her contributions have transformed our industry and demonstrated the effectiveness of servant leadership.” Pat will continue to serve in her current role until she retires on October 1, 2018. Pat’s CCMC story began in 1999, when she sold her own community management company in Virginia to become Executive Director for Celebration. In 2014, she was named Vice President for her exceptional leadership. As Vice President she continued to serve Celebration with executive oversight and professional consultation. “Pat Wasson is a true legend in Celebration. Her legacy is one that embodies commitment to excellence, positive cooperation, negotiation for positive outcomes, passion for service, and pride in the community. These are all factors that will be sustained by those with whom she has worked and served. I join with others in our community, both original and newer residents, in thanking her for her service and dedication, and wishing her every happiness in the years ahead,” explains CROA Board President David Anderson. Longtime resident, volunteer and CROA Director, Jack McLaughlin, “I have personally worked with Pat for 19 years. Her guidance, insight and forward thinking has been invaluable in our growth as a community and Association. I have nothing but

praise, appreciation and gratitude for the many, many contributions she has made to our community.” Pat has watched Celebration grow from 600 homes into what it is today - one of the most recognized and desirable places to call home. “My service to Celebration has been a true gift,” she explains. “Our residents and team members have inspired me to think beyond the ordinary, embrace the extraordinary and expect the impossible. It has been an incredible privilege to be part of the Celebration family.” With a nationally renowned reputation in the industry, Pat has dedicated her career to elevating service in the community management industry. She has previously served as National President for Community Associations Institute (CAI), National Faculty for CAI, Chair of the National Education Committee and led the task force that established the current curriculum and standards for the national certification program for community manager and ultimately serve as Chair of the National Board of Certification for Community Association Managers, now known as the Community Association Managers International Certification Board. She holds her Certified Manager of Community Associations® (CMCA®) and Professional Community Association Manager® (PCAM®) designations from CAI.

Celebration Community Development District

Celebration CDD – Mosquito Control FAQ Spring is a time of enjoying the Florida sunshine and being outdoors in our neighborhoods and community. It is also a time of increased mosquito activity, and it helps to be aware of their activities, the programs in place for controlling the insects and what you can do to help. Below are some commonly asked questions related to mosquito control practices, taken from a brochure provided by the District’s mosquito control contractor, Clarke Mosquito Control.

Q: Is it necessary to spray for adult mosquitoes in populated areas? A: Yes. A well-planned, integrated program involves stopping mosquitoes in both the larval and adult stages. Mosquitoes can migrate up to 15 miles, which overrides local larval control efforts. This results in the need for adult mosquito control. Q: Are the insecticides being used for controlling mosquitoes dangerous? A: No. Industry and government testing programs are so advanced and so demanding that it is virtually impossible to use a control product which could have an adverse effect upon people, animals or plant life.

Q: Why do we need mosquito control programs? A: Without control programs, the mosquito population would flourish and cause potential health and comfort problems.

Q: What can I personally do to help control mosquito development? A: Look for possible breeding sites in your yard and community (e.g., any standing water areas). Advise the District office of potential problems. If adult mosquitoes become a nuisance, immediately notify the District office.

Q: How can we best control mosquito breeding? A: By identifying their breeding sites and preventing the larvae from maturing into adults. Preventing larval development into adult mosquitoes can be accomplished through carefully planned and implemented programs while meeting sound environmental standards.

If you would like a copy of the full FAQ brochure, go to the website, http://www.CelebrationCDD.com/mosquito-control/ and scroll down to Informational Brochures or stop by the District office (313 Campus Street behind the library). You may also contact us at 407-566-1935 or [email protected] with any questions, comments, or concerns.

The community of Celebration derives its unique character from a mix of compatible architectural styles and from the cooperation of all owners in upholding minimum design, landscaping, and aesthetic standards. One of the benefits of owning property in a planned community is the commitment among neighbors to maintain their property in a neat, attractive, and well-landscaped condition to enhance the overall beauty and aesthetic appeal of the community. Every owner has a responsibility to comply with the governing documents and uphold the community standards described in the Celebration Charter.

Security Devices Design Guidelines Safety and security are important to every property owner and resident. When considering security devices for your home, changes must be approved in the same manner as other exterior changes to a property by submitting an application to the Architectural Review Committee (ARC). Applications for security devices require a diagram of the property showing the proposed locations of the devices as well as pictures indicating how they will be concealed (i.e., photo of front porch showing which corner the camera will be installed). Specifications for all proposed devices are also required, including size, color and image. Specific Design Guidelines for security devices are:

Security Cameras • Location - Exterior security devices shall be hidden from public view to the greatest extent possible. The best location is often mounted under roof eaves, in corners; however, other locations may be reviewed. Cameras should not be installed in the middle of walls. Creative alternatives are encouraged (i.e., back side of fences). At no time shall the security device be directed into neighboring properties.

• Size - Cameras shall be appropriately sized to their proposed locations so that the size does not hinder its concealment. Conduits/wires must be concealed within the structure. Exposed wiring and conduits are not permitted. • Color - Camera housing and associated brackets shall be consistent to the location on which it is mounted. Housing and parts may need to be painted. • Flashing or strobing from cameras is not permitted if either warrants a complaint from neighbors. • Video doorbell cameras may be approved by ARC if the finish and color match the existing door hardware on the front door.

Security Lights • Any exterior device and its accessories shall have its light source diffused or shielded from view of the street and adjacent properties. The best location is often mounted under roof eaves; however, other locations may be reviewed. • Flood lights are not permitted.

Design Guidelines are approved by the Celebration Residential Owners Association (CROA) Board to provide guidance to owners and contractors applicable to all of the residential properties within the community. For additional information, you may obtain current Design Guidelines and an application from Town Hall (851 Celebration Ave.) or download from the Celebration Front Porch (www.celebration.fl.us). Select Community Standards under the Town Hall tab.

Saturday, May 12 7 p.m. Community Presbyterian Church Looking for something to do this Mother’s Day weekend? Why not treat mom to a walk along the “Great White Way” right here in Celebration. For this year’s spring concert, the Celebration Community Chorus will be going back to their roots (spring of 2012) to present ‘The Best of Broadway.’ In this 2018 chorus version, the scene is set during the golden age of Broadway musicals – 1940’s to 1960’s. Before this time, musical themes ranged from light-hearted song and dance entertainment to the dramatic or sentimental to political satire. Plays of this new era focused on raising social consciousness and promoting tolerance. These works also yielded some of the most enduring story lines and musical scores ever written. To illustrate the shift in subject matter, Conductor Kristopher Schave has chosen medleys from My Fair Lady (the story of a cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons so that she may pass as a “lady”), West Side Story (a modern adaptation of Romeo & Juliet) and Fiddler on the Roof (a father struggling to impart the importance of religious and cultural traditions to his 5 daughters).

There was also a notable change in the music during this period. Many of the lyrics shared inspirational overtones designed to give renewed strength or guidance to the play’s characters. The team of Rogers & Hammerstein produced some of the most memorable songs of this genre including “Climb Every Mountain” (The Sound of Music) and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” (Carousel). These two beautiful, timeless melodies are also part of the program. So, if you have been thinking, “Wouldn’t it be loverly to spend some quality time with mom this Mothers’ Day weekend”? The Celebration Community Chorus invites you to join them as they pay tribute to some of Broadway’s best-loved classics. You’ll find that this is somewhere your entire family can go to and enjoy, so don’t be surprised if it becomes a tradition. (And as a final note, just to shake things up a bit, the chorus will also be performing a medley from a popular rock musical that premiered as an “Off-Off-Broadway” production in 1982, but you’ll have to come to the concert to [HINT…] see more)!

A New View Standing up for your “Citizen Health” By Eileen Crawford, LMHC Graduation time has rolled around again. Our kids have grown from their protected cocoons to become citizens someday charged with leading our nation. As we navigate arduous ceremonies, one question invades parents’ minds: have I taught her all she needs to know about how to navigate the world? Not since the ‘70s has America seen the level of civic engagement we are seeing today. Back then, students were the leaders in dissent against the Vietnam War. At first, their campus protests were viewed as the rebellious folly of kids with too much time on their hands, but they persisted, and over time, their intensity, and the witness of those on the front lines, changed the minds of a weary nation. Once their mission was accomplished, the use of student protest dramatically diminished – until today. Starting with Black Lives Matter, and now with the #MeToo and Never Again movements, students are again finding and using their voices. Since Civics as a school subject was largely eliminated decades ago, these young people are creating their own ways to get their message across. They have expanded from marches and walkouts to the skillful use of social media to spread their message and rally their crowds. While some may view this new surge in activism with the familiar skepticism older adults have always had toward their

offspring, there is evidence that this civic engagement is good for the mental and emotional health of participants. According to the Society for Research in Child Development, civil engagement leads to (mostly) positive changes in health outcomes. Those who vote and volunteer see higher academic achievement and incomes, and lower rates of depression. Those who engage in activism see similar academic and income improvements, but also engage in more risky lifestyle behaviors. The researchers postulate that this may be due to activists often being members of counter-culture groups and that some become discouraged by the slow pace of social change. Remember, when your young adult stands up, he might just be improving the world, and his own health in the process. Kids teach us something new every day, don’t they? Canines and their companions had reason to celebrate on March 23, as the Celebration Unleashed Dog Park celebrated it’s first anniversary with a Yappy Hour. A chamber of commerce spring afternoon greeted attendees, as residents mingled and dogs frolicked.

Spring Fling Some of the community’s youngest residents were painting the town red and blue and green and yellow and any number of combinations during an afternoon of egg coloring at Town Hall. The youngsters enjoyed the spring weather, as they let their imaginations and creativity take over. The young (and young at heart) also had the opportunity to do crafts and of course, have their faces painted. Special thanks to the Girl Scouts for their assistance.

Spring Fling Residents enjoyed a community tradition on March 31, as kids and their families came together to participate in the annual egg hunt. The hunt, or more appropriately the gathering, saw 20,000 eggs spread across the Spring Park field as the hunters scurried and hustled their way to find the colorful, prize filled treasures.

Five life-changing days By Luis Henrique Prado Cunha RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) is an event organized around building leadership skills, connecting with others, and having fun at the same time. Throughout the five days, we participate in activities including team-building exercises, meeting speakers from the community, talking to Rotary Youth Exchange teenagers, and even canoeing around the lake. However, these descriptions do not even come close to expressing how powerful the complete RYLA experience is in helping us grow as better people. You must be there to understand this. On the first day of RYLA, we were awkward teenagers, strangers to one another, eating quietly. By the last day, all you would see and hear were chants, laughter, and joy every way you turned your head. The friendships made at RYLA are even more intimate than those we have with people we see every day, people that we never have a chance of knowing deeper. In life, we begin painting masks over our faces from an early age; RYLA helps us remove these masks and show ourselves and see others for what we really are. We realize we are not alone when facing the challenges that life brings and comprehend that we can help others greatly through simple actions. Nevertheless, when we return to our normal lives, we are once again in a society of masks; and if we are not careful, we can begin painting our own again.

However, just knowing that there is always something behind the paint makes us much more understanding, much more welcoming, and much more embracing of all those around us. The true meaning of RYLA is one that can only be experienced and not explained. I also thought that I knew these things I am telling you about, but now I understand them as I never had before. For three years, I had the opportunity to go and chose not to, because I had a test to study for, an essay to write, or some other homework to do. Looking back, I would give almost anything to be at RYLA one more time. It is difficult to understand this without experiencing it, but regardless of who you are, or what you are facing in life, if you have the opportunity to attend RYLA yourself, or know someone who does, know that RYLA is truly a life-changing experience. RYLA is awarded to deserving members of Celebrations High Schools Rotary Interact club. Teacher Gary Benedix, is the club sponsor

By Cindy Swisher History and Heritage – A big Celebrators thank you to our April speaker Kayla Smith of the Osceola County Historical Society. Founded in 1949, their mission is to collect and preserve the county’s history, and provide educational, research, and recreational opportunities. If you haven’t already, be sure to add this to your Central Florida trip list to visit and enjoy. Celebrators Connect UPDATE – Several of our members have expressed an interest in finding a way to help “Celebrators Connect” with others who have similar interests or backgrounds. So far, various members have come up with the following ideas and are looking for others to participate – RV Rovers, K-8 School Helpers, Classic Car Cronies and Dine-IN Club. If you would like more information on these groups or would like to start one of your own, visit our website www.thecelebrators.org. Material is also available for the taking at the information table located in the back of the room during our monthly meetings.

And Speaking of Meetings… – The Celebrators are always looking of new and interesting speakers for our monthly meetings. Are you one of those people with an unusual career (opera singer, professional athlete, archeologist, etc.)? Maybe you have just returned from a vacation to some exotic destination and are dying to share the details of your trip. Or, perhaps you have a unique talent or hobby. If you or someone you know fits the bill, we would love to have you attend one of our monthly members meetings and tell us all about it! Contact our President, Carol Coehlo, to find out how to sign up for your “15 minutes of fame.” Coming in May – Jannine Martino, guidance counselor at Celebration K-8, will be at our monthly membership meeting to discuss the many volunteer opportunities available at the school. Notice how this fits right in with one of our new “Celebrators Connect” groups – K-8 School Helpers? Join us and learn how you can get involved. It’s as easy as A-B-C!

United We Stand – Central Florida “United We Stand – Central Florida” is a grassroots organization for Celebration and Central Florida residents. We are “a civilized and common-sense public policy club in support of the President open to everyone.” In April Mark Oxner, a former school board candidate addressed the issue of what the Constitution says about education. He used that standard to discuss how to improve school initiatives responsive to local demand and how that will strengthen students as future leaders in the country. Tom Varacky announced at the March meeting that UnitedWeStandCF and visitors to our booth at the Porch and Yard Sale contributed $120 to the Wounded Warrior project, the group we support this year. May 9 meeting, (6:30 – 7:30 p.m., 851 Building, Celebration) With all the discussion about types of firearms, it important we understand the history and rationale for the Second Amendment and that we learn exactly what firearms are now being questioned. Whether you are a novice or experienced gun owner, this open discussion will be enlightening. There are just too many conflicting descriptions, understandings, and implications in the news for most of us to follow. As a reminder, we will continue to collect donations for the Wounded Warrior project throughout the year as our charity project.

Hold the dates: June 6: Presentation on Institute on the Constitution to Celebrators; July 4: July 4th parade, and Constitution Day Party and Fundraiser; September 16: In advance of the remembrance, September 17. Sign up for details at: www.unitedwestandcf.com or contact us at [email protected]. We have a Facebook page: (https://www.facebook.com/UnitedWeStandCF) where you will find new postings.

By Patricia Alesbury Our year of Garden Club meetings and trips is drawing to a close. It has been an eventful and enjoyable year. Our program has been varied and entertaining from the Cayman Islands and Martha’s Vineyard to talks on pollinators, landscape design, bromeliads and container planting. We have enjoyed trips to Leu Gardens, Bok Tower, Mount Dora and the interior gardening world of Gaylord Palms Resort. We have raised funds for the community from two pine straw sales in October and March and our fashion show in February. Thank you to everyone who participated enabling us to donate money to worthwhile causes here in town. Our last event in May will be the presentation of the wreath at the Memorial Day Flag Ceremony on May 26. Our photos this month illustrate the donations we have made. • Thriving in Place to enable them to purchase a fridge, a printer and other equipment for their new premises. • Lifelong Learning to purchase equipment such as an Elmo projector and white board flip charts for use in lectures • Celebration K-8 school for three different gardening projects within the school. • Celebration High school to enable them to add colorful plants to the entrance of the school • Give Kids the World to buy new plants for the butterfly garden under the direction of Robert Bowden of Leu Gardens. Members enjoyed a wonderful pasta spring luncheon at Artisan Park Club house in April and trips to a blueberry farm and a winery. We have a great program of meetings and trips planned for next year starting in September 2018. Details will be on our website soon, www.celebrationgardenclub.org. Once again, thank you for supporting Garden Club and our community this year and have a wonderful summer wherever you choose to be!

Mike Harford to address Democrats in May March proved to be an excellent packed meeting when Celebration resident and former Colorado Congresswoman Pat Schroeder spoke at our meeting recalling funny stories from the past and guidance for the future in our effort to turn Florida blue. In April, we learned from Chris King about his run for Florida Governor in the primary coming up August 28. If elected, he plans to work for making sure wages and incomes finally start going up, ensuring educational opportunity, expanding access to affordable housing, and passing on a cleaner environment to the next generation. We expect our May meeting to be equally stimulating when former District 1 County Commissioner Mike Harford joins us. Mr. Harford will give us an update on the county, and fill us in on what to expect in the future and what we can do as Democrats to get our county to participate in a more progressive manner with county matters. Whenever he has spoken at our meetings in the past we have had an excellent turnout and suspect the same

will be true on Wednesday May 23. As a lifelong resident of the county, born in Kissimmee, he has knowledge of the past that help us understand how we came to where we are today. We have been grateful to be able to learn from him and look forward to doing so again. Please join us every fourth Wednesday from January-October at our monthly meetings. We meet together at 7 p.m. at Town Hall, 851 Celebration Ave. in Mike Harford Celebration and conclude at 8 p.m. promptly. We would love to have you with us as we push forward working for a progressive agenda in getting Democrats elected this fall. You can find us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ democratsofcelebration All are welcome to our friendly meetings, whether you live in Celebration or not. Please call Steph Garber for more info at 321-939-0775. We also have a 50/50 drawing at every meeting! Please join us.

Connelly reporting to duty April 4, 2018, 0900, destination Denny’s Restaurant for the ‘Battle of the Pancakes.’ Many articles have been written about the above three gentlemen, referencing their lives as former military personnel. However, outside of their service to our country, they are three men who have become friends with histories only they can understand. Monday thru Friday, the threesome convenes every morning for coffee and breakfast. Their meeting location may change, but their conversations have a common thread – respect for each other interspersed with good-natured humor. The humor is not only saved for each other, friendly jabs are shared with the employees of their gathering spots in such a way that everyone knows their names when they enter. When remembering their “war” stories, each one patiently listens without interruption of tales as if they were their own to tell. Most amazingly, they brag on each other and cannot wait to boast of the others’ accomplishments and or awards such as the two-time Purple Heart Recipient. In addition, even more amazing is how modest each is regarding their own personal achievements in serving our country evidencing the strong and humble leaders they played in battle. All three of these unselfish men were drafted either in their senior year of high school or immediately after graduation. Only 18 years of age, each one lived in different parts of our country and enlisted in different arms of the military. Individually all have experienced the good and the bad of wartime.

Conversing with John, Tony and Bill, you learn not only about their personal reflections on the draft, WW II and Vietnam, you become enlightened of their personal lives and their paths to current day. Their friendships began over a simple cup of coffee and grew into daily breakfasts of companionship between three men living in Celebration. This new friendship and respect they now share with each other, is a true reflection of how they lived their lives in the military. Honor, leadership and regard for their fellow soldiers is shown with each other. The belief of “first on and last off the battlefield” still holds true even for the ‘Battle of the Pancakes’ at Denny’s Restaurant. Staff Sergeant John Colacchio, Flight Officer Tony Gallego and Sergeant William A. Connelly currently serve as active members of Thriving In Place. If you would like to learn more about Thriving In Place, please contact Mary Pat Rosenthal, 407-572-9850.

Geoffrey Mouen shares Celebration’s Pattern Book New Urbanism presented Community Conversations with Geoffrey Mouen, speaking about Celebration’s Pattern Book. A fascinating look at the thought that went into creating our community. Geoffrey has been part of Celebration since the beginning of the community. From 1992 - 1999, Geoffrey worked for the worldrenowned firm of Robert A.M. Stern Architects. A bit of Celebration History, Robert Stern and Jacquelin Robertson created the master plan for Celebration. With only a couple of seats to spare in the new Thriving space at 690 Celebration Avenue, the group enjoyed learning more about the Pattern Book and hearing stories about the planning that went into creating “streetscapes.”

The New Urbanism Committee plans to offer Community Conversations on a regular basis so that we can learn more about Celebration, New Urbanism and our place in Central Florida.

K-8 students digging their Golden Shovel Award The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) selected the Celebration K-8 School as the Gold Winner of the Golden Shovel Award in the Best Revitalized Garden category! This award recognized the multiple new gardening initiatives implemented during the 2017/2018 school year, including a new edible raised bed garden, a keyhole garden, native wildflower gardens, a butterfly garden, and an outdoor vermi-compost tower garden. The Florida Farm to School Golden Shovel Awards recognize school garden projects developed during or sustained throughout the school year. FDACS recognizes schools that show outstanding efforts in their school gardens and encourages students to get involved in nutrition and agriculture education. School gardens help students learn about the process of getting fresh produce from the garden to their plate and the important role agriculture plays in our everyday lives.

First graders take a bite out of their curriculum With the support of the PTA “Green Up” Committee, Celebration K-8 School first grade teacher Mrs. Joiner created a new organic edible garden for the benefit of all 120+ first grade students. Students were able to compare the length, shape, color and taste of different types of lettuce through the “Lettuce Be Different” curriculum, which emphasizes the importance of diversity in crops and in real life. Seven raised beds were built for students to grow various types of lettuce, kale, spinach, peppers, radish, peas, beans, and aromatic herbs. The new garden was funded by the generous support of the Garden Club of Celebration, as well as through grants from the Florida Farm Bureau and from Florida Agriculture in the Classroom, Inc.

Nearly 40 Kindergarten students from the Celebration K-8 School and their teachers Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Shurina planted Florida native wildflower seedlings in the school garden. The Florida Wildflower Foundation through the “Seedlings for Schools” grant awarded the seedlings to the school. UF/IFAS Master Gardener and Celebration resident Lisa Barry volunteered to help the students dig, plant, mulch and water, and shared the importance of planting native wildflowers for our local ecosystem. The Florida Wildflower Foundation nurtures the awareness, understanding and enjoyment of Florida’s native wildflowers through education, planting and research projects that increase the presence of wildflowers and support the wildlife depending upon them.

Celebration K-8 receives $3,000 TERRA grant With the support of the PTA “Green Up” Committee, the Celebration K-8 School was awarded a $3,000 grant from the Technology Education Resource & Redesign Alliance, Inc. (TERRA, Inc.). TERRA is an organization that funds scientific equipment for a hydroponic vs. traditional gardening challenge. The grant funded an indoor hydroponic tower garden, as well as two iPads and scientific tools for first and second grade students in Mrs. Joiner and Mr. Fiorito’s classrooms to conduct their experiment. The Mission of TERRA is to mobilize the resources, knowledge, and capacity of individuals, foundations, business and industry in shaping and facilitating educational policy, practice, and research for increased achievement in a global environment.
