HOT 30 COUNTDOWN
BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE maybe I’ll go there. The most important thing is to just listen. It’s a conversation; it’s not an interview. If you listen to these people, they’re telling you about their weekend, and inevitably, there’s something there that’s awesome.” Margaritaville is the ideal location for the Happy Hour — not only is it just a block from SiriusXM’s Nashville home at the Bridgestone Arena, it’s also in the heart of the city’s downtown party district. When artists play Bridgestone or the Ryman Auditorium, just half a block away, it’s convenient for last-minute visits from the likes of Brett Eldredge, Maren Morris or Blake Shelton, who trotted on over after Brainard tweeted him. “Blake didn’t even tell me he’d be here,” says Brainard. “Next thing I know, he comes walking in with a bottle of vodka.” The Happy Hour didn’t start at Margaritaville. Brainard inherited a countdown with a live studio audience more than a year ago when he swapped dayparts with Storme Warren, who now does mornings on The Highway. Warren started taping the countdown, and that left Brainard with an audience and no structure. It soon became a party where the guests signed up in a dvance for 30-minute windows. The move to Margaritaville met some resistance at SiriusXM, but once the company agreed, it brought a wealth of positives: The audience could stay longer, it created a natural cross-promotion with Jimmy Buffett’s Radio Margaritaville channel, the access to alcohol helped loosen up the crowd, and the Happy Hour now has a natural home when it visits such remote l ocations as Canada or Las Vegas. “When we say we’re doing Margaritaville in Vegas, people know where to show up,” says Brainard. Musically, the Happy Hour is mostly a spirited property. Luke Combs’ “Hurricane,” Runaway June’s “Wild West” and Thomas Rhett’s “T-Shirt” all received spins during the June 30 installment, though the shift also included Zac Brown Band’s “My Old Man,” an emotional ballad that’s the antithesis of a party song. “If we’re to the point where we’ve got to drop some music, we might drop the slower songs, but the Highway’s pretty tight,” says Brainard. “We spend a lot of time and effort figuring out what our identity is musically, so I think we pretty much just stick to that and just let the party atmosphere take care of itself.” The good times come across on the air, though the scope of the celebration isn’t quite as obvious. The listeners can’t see the line outside the building b efore the venue opens to Happy Hour visitors at 2 p.m. They don’t see the mass of patrons at the bar, or the preening and posing of tourists looking to score on their vacation, and they don’t get to witness Brainard wading into the crowd to take photos. “Some of them drive for days,” he says. “We can’t get everybody on, and I just can’t imagine disappointing people. If you show up there, I owe it to you [to reach out]. I don’t want to force myself on anybody for a selfie, but I at least want to shake your hand and meet you, get your name and say hi.” And keep the party going, even for the patrons who may not be able to remember it the next day. “That’s why we take selfies,” says Brainard. “So that we can document it.”

(For more on Lonestar’s hit, which led the list 18 years ago this week, see Coda on page 21.) STAR-SPANGLED SALES Sparked by the Fourth of July holiday, patriotic country hits score significant boosts in sales and streaming. On Country Digital Song Sales, Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA,” which originally peaked at No. 7 on Hot Country Songs in 1984, re-enters at a new peak of No. 2, up 1,128 percent to 23,000 d ownloads sold in the week ending July 6. The move bests last year’s action, when “USA” re-entered the sales chart at No. 9 with 19,000 sold (July 23, 2016). The song also surges by 606 percent to 2.2 million U.S. streams. Toby Keith’s 2002 Hot Country Songs No. 1 “ Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)” reenters Country Digital Song Sales at No. 9 (14,000, up 685 percent) for the first time since July 23, 2016, when it returned with 16,000 sold. The anthem, which reaches the Country Digital Song Sales top 10 for the first time, also hikes by 103 percent to 2.6 million U.S. streams. NEW TOP 10s Billy Currington’s “Do I Make You Wanna” (Mercury) rises 12-8 on Country Airplay, i ncreasing 8 percent to 29.8 million impressions. It’s his 15th top 10 ... Midland achieves its first Country Airplay top 10 with debut single “Drinkin’ Problem” (Big Machine), which moves 11-9 (up 7 percent; 29.8 million in audience).
RADIO STAYS ON ‘ROAD’ Sam Hunt’s “Body Like a Back Road” (MCA N ashville) extends its rule on Hot Country Songs to 22 weeks. Only Florida Georgia Line’s RHETT (left) and MORRIS “Cruise” has led longer, for 24 weeks in 2012 and 2013. “Road” likewise leads Country Streaming Songs (17.8 million U.S. streams, up 6 percent) and Country Digital Song Sales (50,000 AIRPLAY COMPARISON Beginning the week of July 9, the Hot Country Songs sold, up 1 percent) for a 22nd week each. chart now includes a column titled “Country Airplay Rank” for readers to more On Country Airplay, where it ruled for three weeks beginning on the easily compare songs’ positions on Hot Country Songs (which blends radio May 6-dated chart, “Road” ranks in the top five (4-5; 37.2 million impressions, airplay, streaming and sales data) and Country Airplay (based purely on radio up less than 1 percent) for a record-setting 15th week. Thomas Rhett’s “Craving You” (Valory), featuring Maren Morris, ascends 2-1 in its 15th week on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated July 22), increasing 7 percent to 45.2 million audience impressions in the week ending July 9, according to Nielsen Music. On the airplay-, streaming- and sales-based Hot Country Songs chart, it pushes to a new high, bumping 4-3. Dave Barnes and Julian Bunetta wrote the duet/launch single from Rhett’s third full-length studio album, due this fall. The love song marks Rhett’s eighth Country Airplay leader, while Morris achieves her first. “I can’t believe we’re sitting here talking about my eighth No. 1 single,” Rhett tells Billboard. “I am so proud to be able to share this with Maren and can’t thank her enough for lending her talent to this song. ‘Craving You’ wasn’t initially written with a female vocal part, but now I can’t imagine the song without her voice on it.” Morris reigns in her fourth Country Airplay a ppearance. Her debut, “My Church,” yielded her p revious high, reaching No. 9 on May 21, 2016. Additionally, Morris’ current solo single, “I Could Use a Love Song” (Columbia Nashville), from her album Hero, ranks at No. 26 on both Country Airplay (9.9 million, up 7 percent) and Hot C ountry Songs. She is the second woman to top Country Airplay in 2017: Lauren Alaina’s “Road Less Traveled” led the April 22 list.

ECLIPSE SHINES LIGHT ON OPRY
A rare total eclipse is scheduled to darken Nashville on Aug. 21, and the Grand Ole Opry will celebrate the once-in-a-lifetime moment with a pair of extra shows at the Opry House. Little Big Town, Darius Rucker, Wynonna and Charles Esten have c ommitted to an Aug. 20 evening installment of the WSM-AM Nashville broadcast, while an Opry Total Eclipse Plaza Party is set for the afternoon of Aug. 21 as the moon casts a shadow over the Earth. The Plaza Party lineup has yet to be announced, though an official Opry release promises live music, specialty drinks and free eclipse glasses as the company serves a “one-of-a-kind” soundtrack to the event. An eclipse occurs when the moon comes between the sun and the Earth. While all of the continental United States will experience at least a partial eclipse on Aug. 21, a total eclipse — in which only the corona around the sun is visible from the ground — is limited to a 70-mile-wide band that stretches from northern Oregon through Charleston, S.C. Nashville is in the heart of that path, meaning the city will experience its first total eclipse in more than 500 years. The Opry Plaza Party will begin at 11 a.m. The partial eclipse starts at 11:58 a.m. CT and ends at 2:45 p.m. The total eclipse, which lasts a mere two minutes, begins at 1:27 p.m. The Opry is not alone in capitalizing on the phenomenon. The Westin Nashville is holding a rooftop party with priority attendance for guests who book two nights. And the Nashville Sounds minor-league baseball team is hosting its own viewing party in conjunction with several city agencies before a 4:05 p.m. game against the Iowa Cubs.

The first signing in Chris Young (left) met up with the expanded firm is a forthcoming Nashville Convention & Visitors album from Universal Music Nash- Corp. president/CEO Butch ville solo artist Dan Tyminski … Big Spyridon when a reported 240,000 Machine Music and Tree Vibez signed people attended the city’s Let songwriter-producer Daniel Ross to Freedom Sing! Music City July 4th, a joint songwriting agreement … The headlined by Young. Scooter Brown Band signed deals with David Corlew & Associates for management, APA Nashville for booking, BFD for distribution and 117 Entertainment for PR in conjunction with a fall album release … Bluegrass band Wilson Banjo Co. signed a recording contract with Bonfire … LaDonna Gatlin, who has performed with The Gatlin Brothers, reached a management and booking agreement with the April Potter Agency as a speaker and singer … Former record executive Howard Stark died June 15 following surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Associated with ABC/Dunhill in the early 1970s, Stark founded Mary Tyler Moore’s MTM Nashville office with Alan Bernard in 1984. Among the artists and executives who got starts during the label’s run were Judy Rodman, Holly Dunn, Trisha Yearwood and Big Machine Label Group president/CEO Scott Borchetta.

MAKIN’ TR ACKS TOM ROLAND
[email protected]
The key to understanding Kelsea Ballerini’s “Legends,” the first single from her forthcoming sophomore album, lies in the sixth line as she documents the “blood, sweat and heartbeats” of a love gone by. It’s a slight reworking of a familiar cliche — blood, sweat and tears — that pointedly replaces “tears” with a powerful sign of life. It’s a subtly t ransformative statement, lodged in a transformative song, written roughly two years ago. “I was going through a breakup at the time, and I had written a lot of sassy, angry, bitter songs about it — which you will hear on the record,” says Ballerini. “But I really wanted to write a song about choosing to look back on the relationship fondly, which is hard sometimes when you’re out of something and heartbroken.” The starting place for that exercise was an ascendant piano figure, created by songwriterproducer Forest Glen Whitehead (“Peter Pan,” “Love Me Like You Mean It”) on a v irtual k eyboard in Logic prior to an a ppointment at his off ice with Ballerini and songwriter H illary L indsey (“Blue Ain’t Your Color,” “God, Your Mama, and Me” ). The chords landed on the o ff beats in the measure, while synthetic p ercussion held the tempo together. Something about the pattern seemed appropriate for “ Legends,” a simple title Ballerini had been BALLERINI weighing for a month or two. The title and the chord progression created a grandiose atmosphere, and the song began to unfold with a distinct dramatic flair, almost like a movie. “ ‘Legends’ has that cinematic feel to it,” says Whitehead. “You just immediately get in the vibe of what that track is trying to tell you, and I feel like that’s why she found the title so quickly. It came together pretty easily b ecause it was what was on her heart, and it just aligned perfectly with e verything else that was going on.” They began working at the start of the song with only a vague notion of what the “Legends” chorus would be — “We didn’t even know if we were headed to ‘We were legends,’ ” recounts Ballerini — but they got there with a mix of large concepts and flashes of color. Many of the words — such as “fame,” “glory,” “we went down in history,” “epic” — carry out the big-sized ambitions of that “Legends” title. “I love songs that are consistent; where it all goes together like a puzzle,” says Ballerini. It’s clearly a bright puzzle. Other lyrics — including “golden,” “fire,” “permanent marker” and “We were neon in a gray crowd” — add vivid shades to the proceedings. “We wanted to paint this picture of this couple that was just fearless with their love,” she says. “They were the couple that everyone looked to and looked at and watched.” When they finished writing “Legends,” Ballerini did a quick vocal with Lindsey supplying harmonies over a fairly spare track, one of 214 songs that were considered for the upcoming album. It would stay on the shelf for more than a year before Ballerini recorded it, but it always seemed destined to make the next project, in part because it played such a major role in Ballerini revising her outlook on that broken romance. “This song,” she says, “was the first step of letting it all go and being able to just move on.” With that kind of emotional weight behind it, Whitehead and co-producer
Jason Massey treated “Legends” differently than they did the songs on Ballerini’s The First Time, which was released May 19, 2015. Whitehead and Massey invariably built those songs one instrument at a time, often framing the vocal Ballerini sang the day she wrote the music. But “Legends” needed more of a group approach. “We wanted it to sound epic with a band situation in the choruses,” says Whitehead. “That’s a lot different from the demo vibe, so it was trying to find the balance of the two. The verses are pretty sparse, and then we let the chorus kind of open up and let it be more of a radio chorus in the more ‘up’ sections.” The players gathered at Ronnie’s Place, a Black River studio named after former owner Ronnie Milsap, and provided a new context for Ballerini’s demo vocal. Dave Cohen t ransformed the computerized keyboard into an acoustic piano, Nir Z laid down a film-q uality drum groove, and Rob McNelley punctuated the track with haunting guitar tones. “We just talked about the dynamics being very up and down,” recalls Whitehead. “When it came to the chorus, we needed everybody to the wall, and then whenever it came to the verse, minimal, to create the hills and valleys and the cinematic-ness.” With the live band making a signif icant change to the atmosphere, Ballerini came back in to resing the vocals on “Legends” and match the heightened emotional texture of the production. “I really wanted it to be perfect,” she says. “I’ve never done that before. I’m a big stickler that I want my record to sound like what I sound like in real life. I don’t sound perfect, and sometimes my voice is tired and scratchy, and sometimes I don’t hit all the notes, and that needs to be translated on my record. But for this song, I just wanted to sing it until I felt like it conveyed the emotion of the lyrics.” “Legends” was particularly challenging because it tested her range more than her prior material. “There’s a lot of flips into head voice, which I had never done a lot of before,” she says. “I really wanted to make sure that I could do it and that it translated well.” Ballerini very consciously split the title into two words — “Le” and “gends” — when she sang it, lacing it with an extra dose of gravitas. “It was one of those left-footed things that makes you listen,” she reasons. “We did think about trying to combine the two [syllables], but it just sounded right,” adds Whitehead. “Sometimes, the way somebody says something in conversation might not be the correct way. Whenever she broke the words up, it just had a different ring to it.” Ballerini added “Legends” to her live set during a May 26 performance in Bakersfield, Calif., and Black River released it to radio via PlayMPE on June 7, the same day it received its TV debut on the CMT Music Awards. It’s now at No. 45 in its fifth week on Country Airplay. The song has taken on a different meaning since its inception. Ballerini is engaged to Warner Music Nashville artist Morgan Evans, and she now sees “Legends” as a reflection on the foundation they’ve built in their first year. But it also demonstrates to her the bond between performer and fan base. “It can be any kind of relationship,” says Ballerini, “so it’s kind of been a c hameleon of a song for me, where it has so many different meanings personally. That makes me feel like no matter if someone is in major love, or is falling out of it, or just has a lot of people around them that they have a good relationship with, that they can hear their story in that song.”

THE STARK REPORT PHYLLIS STARK
[email protected]
Paul DiGiovanni, a rising star in the country music world, recently had a lifechanging experience he describes as “surreal.” Between the time he walked into the Music Row offices of Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) Nashville to write a song and the time he walked back out a couple of hours later, the celebratory banner outside the building had been changed, with the new one lauding his first No. 1 as a writer, Dan + Shay’s “How Not To.” “I’m still really digesting it,” the songwriter-producer says of having a charttopping song (written with Kevin Bard and Adam Hambrick). “It’s the biggest dream of mine coming true, and I’m just waiting for it to all to sink in.” He may be new to the top of the charts, but DiGiovanni is hardly new to music. He first gained fame as the lead guitarist in the pop-rock band Boys Like Girls, which formed in Massachusetts when he was just 17 and scored a record deal with Columbia. He left high school to tour with the band, which remained active until 2012. During that time, he got his first taste of the country music world when his group recorded the song “Two Is Better Than One” with TayDiGIOVANNI lor Swift for its second album, Love Drunk, in 2009. Now living in Nashville for a little more than three years, DiGiovanni is fully immersed in the format and poised to become a very familiar name. He’s p roducing the debut albums for new Universal Music Group Nashville artists Jordan Davis and Brandon Lay, and also produced Jackie Lee’s current single, “Getting Over You.” He has songwriting credits on projects from Lee, Dustin Lynch and Chase Bryant, as well as multiple cuts from Davis and Lay, and a new cut on the next Dan + Shay album. Additionally, he has become a go-to collaborator for producer Scott H endricks, who tapped him to do the programming (including loops, synths and overall polish) on several Warner Music Nashville albums from a rtists i ncluding Blake Shelton, Chris Janson and Michael Ray. It’s a great partnership, says DiGiovanni, because Hendricks encourages him to “be daring instead of too conservative. I don’t have to be afraid [that an idea]
is too crazy.” DiGiovanni’s success in country music has come under the guidance and nurturing of UMPG Nashville, which signed him to his first publishing deal in September 2015. Despite his obvious potential, UMPG Nashville e xecutive vp/GM Kent Earls says even his team has been astonished by DiGiovanni’s fast ride in a music community generally known as “a seven-to-10-year town.” Senior creative director Missy Roberts brought DiGiovanni into the fold, and Earls says she “has done a tremendous job with Paul. Together, as a team, they have taken things to a new level very quickly. “For a new writer to come in and have the success that Paul’s had already is amazing,” says Earls, who anticipates that several more of Paul’s songs will climb the charts in the next 12 months. “He’s got incredible co-writes coming up out on the road with some of our biggest artists, [and] he’s already writing with a lot of the b iggest w riters in town like Ashley Gorley, Ben Hayslip, Jonathan Singleton and Rhett Akins.” Earls confidently predicts, “We’ll end up with two or three [more] No. 1s in the next year” from DiGiovanni. In the video for “How Not To,” director P atrick Tracy took the storyline in a completely different direction than the one DiGiovanni and his c o-writers intended, with a poignant plot about a young couple who separately hit rock bottom, get introduced at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting and then turn their lives around with each other’s support. DiGiovanni was not only onboard with the new storyline, he and his girlfriend — professional actress and American Idol alum Katie Stevens — appear in the video. Stevens takes the lead role, while DiGiovanni has a cameo as the boyfriend she’s with while she’s still drinking. “I have an embarrassing, stupid little 10-second cameo,” he says. Look for DiGiovanni in the scene where “she’s screaming, and it cuts to my face, and I do this epic eye roll and she throws a lamp at the floor and smashes it.” While more acting may not be in his future, there’s little doubt DiGiovanni is destined to become one of Nashville’s behind-the-scenes superstars.

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE

Lonestar ‘Amazed’ Audiences At No. 1 In 1999, the group scored its biggest hit, which also topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 2000

On July 17, 1999, Lonestar logged its third trip to No. 1 on Hot Country Songs with what became its s i g n at u re s o n g , a s “A m a z e d ” a scended 2-1 for the first of eight weeks at the summit. No song had led the list for that long since David Houston’s nine-week No. 1 “Almost Persuaded” in 1966. Aided by a pop remix, the ballad crossed over to pop a nd adu lt formats. On March 4, 2000, it became the first country No. 1 to rule the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 since Kenny R ogers and Dolly Parton’s “Islands in the Stream” in 1983.
Lonestar debuted in 1995 with t he No. 8 Hot C ou nt r y S ongs hit “ Tequila Talkin’,” sporting an original lineup of frontman Richie M cDonald, John Rich, Dean Sams, Michael Britt and Keech Rainwater. The band has banked 36 entries on the chart, i ncluding 18 top 10s and nine No. 1s. Rich, who is now half the duo of Big & Rich, left Lonestar in 1998. Outside of McDonald’s departure from 20072011, the other four founders have remained intact and still record and perform as Lonestar today. In 2016, the group released its 10th studio album, Never Enders. —JIM ASKER
Lonestar performed at Shepherd’s Bush Empire in the United Kingdom in October 2016.
