This involves working with a network of marine specialist through out the world and assist in the implementation of projects globally. The marine program also provides the policy guidance on marine and fisheries issues for the whole union including the 1000 staff in 43 countries and the work of the 10 000 members in IUCN’s commissions. As part of the Department's Blue Team, I was responsible for the development and implementation of the Freshwater, Coastal and Marine Environments Programme. I have done extensive operational support, developed guidelines and strategies, designed training programmes and written technical papers. I was involved in the hiring and supervision of consultants for the Programme as well as building an international network for information exchange, collaboration and funding. I was able to raise US$5 million from bilateral donors to support the Programme. I was responsible for publishing seven books and various documents on coastal and marine environments. I handled and arranged numerous week-long conferences in Africa and Asia as well as lectures for The Bank and other organizations. I also led cross-cultural teams very successfully and have been involved in sector work. Participated in a very large number of international conferences in the environment field including several on coastal management related topics as well as global governance, science and technology policy, development economics, disaster preparedness, marine biodiversity, geographical information systems, ecological economics and several more. Represented the World Bank at several major international conferences like COFI, Coral Reef ) Initiative, UNEPs Land Based Sources of Marine Pollution and the Arusha Conference on Integrated Coastal Zone Management in East Africa and the Island States. I have also participated in several of the preparatory meetings to UNCED as well as other UN coordinating forums for development of and follow up to Chapter 17 of Agenda 21.
