The Cask of Amontillado Literary Analysis Literary Analysis Quinn, Erik, Savanna Carter-1A

Symbols• Fortunado- hate, jealousy • Catacombs- death • Wine- deception • Symbols from this short story help to create a dark tone. The narrator's hate of Fortunado is also supported by these representations.

Imagery "The man wore motley. He had on a tightfitting parti-striped dress..."(Poe, 61).

This piece of imagery is significant because it builds the tone of the story, which is a dark one, as the description of the costume makes it seem somewhat creepy.

Literary devices • Repetition- "Amontillado" - This shows Fourtunato's doubt about the wine being Amontillado. • Dialect- "I will not impose upon your good will." - The way the character talks suggests that they are in the past and educated.

• Onomatopoeia- "ugh...ugh, ugh...ugh." - instead of just saying that Fortunato had a cold or was sick, the author used onomatopoeia to show the reader that he had a cough and was very ill.

Tone • The tone of the story is dark and creepy. Through numerous symbols and literary devices, the tone is set up effectively. • The tone continues to be the same in the story through the use of repetitive and spiteful adjectives.

Themes • The main theme of this short story is that you can not always trust the friendly.

• This theme directly relates to the story as the narrator was so friendly towards Fortunado and he seemed nice but he still was not a trustworthy person.
