Gaelic culture at its best
“C
eilidh” (kay-lee) is Gaelic for “gathering,” and a journey along the Ceilidh Trail (Route 19) offers an opportunity to experience the true meaning of the word. Spending time with friends and neighbours is a staple of life in this region and people here are proud to show off their Gaelic heritage.
Meet the locals by stopping into the Celtic Music Interpretive Centre or The Red Shoe Pub for some live music and dancing (see pages 244 & 245). Continue along the trail to Port Hood where you can enjoy a delicious meal at The Clove Hitch Bar & Bistro overlooking the ocean. Don’t forget to say “hello” to artist Ann Schroeder at her oceanfront studio; take part in one of her Fabric Dyeing by the Sea workshops, or peruse her beautiful hand-painted quilts and silk scarves (see page 245). A trip to Mabou wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the Mabou Farmers’ Market, where over 40 vendors offer up delicious food, beautiful jewellery and art, produce, and, of course, live music. For the golfer in your group, visit the renowned and scenic Cabot Links in Inverness, with its greens sculpted amongst the sand dunes (see page 246). This region has long been a melting pot for Celtic, Acadian, and First Nations people. Nowhere is this more evident than at the state-of-the-art performance facility, Strathspey Place, where the music, dance, and folklore of these cultures are celebrated (see page 244).
Glenora Distillery (see page 244)
Ceilidh Trail
The Red Shoe Pub (see page 245)
Unexpected Discoveries No, our livestock hasn’t gotten into Glenora Distillery’s whisky— this is a not-to-be-missed culinary delight. The hand-crafted preserves at Galloping Cows gained international recognition when they were featured at the Golden Globes, the Oscars, and the Toronto International Film Festival (see page 245).
Bellemeade Farm, Mabou Situated on a working dairy and sheep farm, this charming shop is filled with Cape Breton crafts, hand-woven tartan blankets, throws, rugs, scarves, knits, and a large selection of yarn, including hand-dyed specialty yarns. 166 Rankinville Road, Mabou Fabric Dyeing by the Sea (see page 245)

Not-To-Be-Missed Experiences This area is rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. The following suggestions offer you the quintessential Ceilidh Trail experience; see page 244 for details on these and other area attractions. Tune in to Cape Breton music Celtic Music Interpretive Centre, Judique Take an interactive journey through samples of song, stories, dance, and bagpipe and fiddle music. Interpretive media displays let you try your hand at a fiddle tune or learn how to stepdance (see page 244).
Cycle the Celtic Shores Coastal Trail various entry points between Port Hastings and Inverness This 92-kilometre multi-use trail winds through the communities of Judique, Port Hood, Mabou, and Inverness. Along the way, you’ll find active fishing harbours, beaches, exhilarating views, museums, restaurants, and accommodations. Include the trail in a multi-day cycling or trekking itinerary, or stop for an hour or two to take in the natural beauty of this area (see page 246).
Create a silk scarf inspired by the sea Artist Ann Schroeder shares her passion for colour in her inspiring workshop, Fabric Dyeing by the Sea. In Ann’s hillside studio overlooking the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the rolling dunes of West Mabou Beach, you’ll discover the magic of dyeing silk scarves, cotton fabric, and/or T-shirts with rainbow hues. No experience required, just be willing to play and try something new. Book at least 24 hours in advance (see page 245).
Delight your palate with a tour and tasting Glenora Distillery, Glenville Canada’s only distiller of single-malt whisky is cradled in a glen in the picturesque Mabou Highlands. Enjoy a tour of the distillery, followed by a taste of Glen Breton Rare whisky—the closest to authentic scotch outside of Scotland (see page 244).
Delve into the arts Inverness County Centre for the Arts This fine arts centre showcases the works of local and international artists in its gallery, music studio, and shop (see page 245).
Golf at Canada’s only authentic links course Cabot Links Resort, Inverness With its golf greens sculpted around the sand dunes and ocean views offered at each of the 18 holes, Cabot Links is the recipient of continuous accolades, including SCOREGolf’s ranking as the #2 course in Canada in 2014. Enjoy fine dining at the Panorama Room Ceilidh Trail or casual pub fare at the Cabot Links Public House (see pages 245 & 246).
