UCM Distinguished Alumnus to Present Keynote Address at Pre-Patriot Day Event An annual ceremony honoring the men and women who died and those who responded to terrorist attacks on the United States Sept. 11, 2001 will be observed by the University of Central Missouri Friday, Sept. 9. The ceremony begins at noon near the flagpole at the quadrangle, and is open to members of the campus and local communities. This Pre-Patriot Day event is planned two days prior to the 15th year anniversary date of 9/11, and will feature U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Arnold N. Gordon-Bray (Ret.) as the keynote speaker. Other individuals representing the city of Warrensburg and the university will also participate, as well as members of the Johnson County, Warrensburg, and Whiteman Air Force Base fire departments, and community first responders. A special tribute will be performed by the Lee’s Summit High School Armed Exhibition Drill Team led by Col. Rick Milligan, United States Air Force (Ret.). Members of UCM’s Army ROTC unit and faculty leaders from the Department of Military Science and Leadership also will join in the activities. The event is being coordinated by the Office of Military and Veteran Services, and in case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved to Hendricks Hall, located in the Administration Building. Brig. Gen. Gordon-Bray is a university graduate who was honored in 2012 as a UCM Distinguished Alumnus. He earned a bachelor’s degree in art from UCM plus master’s degrees from the U.S. Air War College and the Naval War College. He culminated his career in a Four-Star Headquarters in the U.S. Africa Command, headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany. As a military leader, he commanded at every level, ranging from a platoon of 40 men to a Brigade Combat Team of 4,500 men and women in the famed 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions. He held staff positions that included the Joint Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg, N.C., and the Installation Management Command, headquartered in San Antonio, for all Army bases worldwide. He is an Airborne Ranger with numerous awards and badges including the Army Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Army’s highest peacetime award; the Defense

Superior Service Medal; multiple Legions of Merit and two Bronze Stars. The Pre-Patriot Day ceremony is an opportunity for the university and local community to come together to pay its respects to the nearly 3,000 men and women who perished and nearly 6,000 individuals who were injured in the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. The worst terrorist attacks on American soil involved two airplanes that were hijacked and flown into the World Trade Center twin towers in New York City; and one that crashed into the U.S. Pentagon in Arlington, Va., and a fourth airplane that was being steered toward Washington, D.C., but crashed near Shanksville, Pa., as passengers tried to overcome hijackers. More firefighters and law enforcement officers died in these events than in any other single event in U.S. history. For more information, contact Delilah Nichols, coordinator of Military and Veteran Services, at 660-543-8977 or email [email protected].

The Ike Skelton Lecture Wednesday, Sept. 21 9 a.m. & 2 p.m. Hendricks Hall

Servant Leadership Lecture Series Every legacy, big or small, begins with a leader. The Servant Leadership Lecture Series, presented by Whiteman Air Force Base and the University of Central Missouri, features speakers who reflect both organization's shared values of service and leadership. Since its founding, UCM's focus on "education for service" has remained unchanged, and together, Whiteman AFB and UCM serve as the largest educators, employers and leadership training centers in the community. In 2011, UCM and Whiteman AFB enhanced their collaboration and formed The Whiteman Advantage, a program aimed to create a shared vision of community while improving opportunities for servicemen and women. During his time at Whiteman AFB, Brigadier General Thomas A. Bussiere strengthened the partnership among Whiteman, UCM and the Warrensburg community; his legacy of selfless, community-focused leadership provides the foundation for the series. The premiere event for the series, the annual Ike Skelton Lecture, will feature public leaders, including politicians, military figures, educators, business leaders and journalists. Speakers will focus on the spirit of service and leadership displayed by Ike Skelton during his life and the shared missions of Whiteman AFB and UCM.

Ike Skelton Lecture Cedric King (Master Sgt., U.S. Army) The third lecture of the series features Master Sgt. Cedric King. King will present the Ike Skelton Lecture at 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016 in Hendricks Hall. King entered the United States Army in 1995. During a career that took him from an infantry private to a position of leadership in the elite Rangers, King graduated from a number of distinguished Army schools. These included the U.S. Army Jumpmaster Course, U.S. Army Pathfinder course, Air Assault course, the U.S. Army Ranger Course, and others. He is the recipient of the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal, and is a four-time Best Ranger Competition participant. On July 25, 2012, during his second tour in Afghanistan, King was severely injured by an improvised explosive device. The blast caused major internal injuries, permanent loss to part of his right arm and hand, and the amputation of both legs. He applied the same determined, can-do mindset to his recovery that he had relied on to succeed as an elite Army Ranger. With the love and support of his wife, Khieda, and daughters, Amari, and Khayma, he began rebuilding his life. Just 21 months after losing both legs, King completed the Boston Marathon, running on prosthetic blades. He has competed in a number of physically daunting events, including a 70.3-mile half Ironman Triathlon, the 2014 New York City Marathon, and the 48.6-mile Disney Marathon series. There, he successfully completed four runs in four days -- a 5k, 10k, half marathon, and full marathon. King shares his inspirational story of endurance with audiences across the country, including schools, churches, the National Football League, and Fortune 500 companies. Just as he led and motivated men and women in combat, he now leads and motivates others to see their possibilities.

Free Entrepreneurial Education for Veterans and Their Spouses

Thursday, September 29, 2016 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Small Business & Technology Development Center at REDI 500 E. Walnut St. Columbia, MO 65201 The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) St. Louis District Office, the Veterans Business Resource Center (VBRC), the Small Business & Technology Development Center, and the Missouri Women's Business Center will present a one-day entrepreneurial education program, Boots to Business Reboot, to veterans and their spouses.

WEEKLY POSITIVE NETWORKING® TIP+ No. 658 August 31, 2016 By Gayle Hallgren-Rezac, Judy Thomson, Darcy Rezac

This program is offered by the SBA in partnership with the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University (IVMF). It is modeled after the existing Operation Boots to Business: From Service to Startup program. The curriculum provides valuable assistance to veterans exploring self-employment opportunities by leading them through the key steps for evaluating business concepts and the foundational knowledge required for developing a business plan. Participants are also introduced to SBA resources available to help access start-up capital and additional technical assistance.

HOW LONG IS TOO LONG? Thank goodness someone has finally answered the question (in a research study) regarding how long we should maintain eye contact. It’s a question we are asked during our networking workshops, and it was great to see this article on LinkedIn entitled “Psychologists have identified the length of eye contact that people find most comfortable” by author, speaker and friend Ray Williams. In a nutshell the research shows: “On average, the participants were most comfortable with eye contact that lasted just over three seconds. Looking at the distribution of preferences, the vast majority of participants preferred a durations between two and five seconds. No one preferred eye contact duration of less than a second or longer than nine seconds.”

This program is available free of charge to veterans and their spouses, but registration is required. Lunch will be provided. Register today! When you reach the registration page, click on Two-Day Course Registration even though this is a one-day program. When choosing the location, select Columbia, MO - 9/29/16. For questions or additional information, please contact Angie Wells at [email protected] or 314-539-6613.

Try the experiment yourself by watching this short video and see which length of eye contact you prefer.
