Special Programs Planned as UCM Prepares to Host The Wall That Heals WARRENSBURG, MO– The Wall That Heals, a major component in the University of Central Missouri’s efforts to engage discussion, honor service members, and educate students and area citizens about the Vietnam War, is coming to campus June 29-July 2. The free exhibit is open to the public along with a number of other special opportunities planned in conjunction with the event. These range from an advance preview of a heralded new Ken Burns and Lynn Novick documentary about the war to a special memorial service recognizing local veterans whose names are on the wall to a Veterans Stand-Down and exhibition at UCM’s McClure Archives and University Museum. Approximately 250 feet long, The Wall that Heals is a mobile half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (often called The Wall) in Washington, D.C. It is a program of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, and includes a mobile Education Center, providing more information about the Vietnam War, as well as photos of service members whose names are on The Wall, a timeline of the Vietnam era, and letters and memorabilia left at The Wall in D.C. The exhibit is made possible through an extensive and competitive application process. It is under the auspices of the McClure Archives and University Museum, and is brought to campus, in part through funding provided by the Office of the ProvostChief Learning Officer. Located on the first floor of the

James C. Kirkpatrick Library, the McClure Archives and University Museum was awarded the opportunity to host The Wall That Heals as part of the traveling exhibit’s 2017 schedule. As such, the display will be stationed on the west side of the library, and will be open 24 hours a day beginning at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, June 29, until close at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 2. Amber Clifford-Napoleone, associate professor of anthropology and director of the McClure Archives and University Museum, said bringing the exhibit to campus is consistent with the Archives and Museum’s designation by the United States Department of Defense (DoD) as a Vietnam Commemorative Partner. As such, the university also is playing a role in gathering and sharing veterans’ stories leading up to the nation’s 50th anniversary observance of the Vietnam War in 2025. The Wall That Heals is hosted by the McClure Archives and University Museum, which also joins in sponsoring the event with KMOS-TV, Museum of Missouri Military History, UCM Office of the ProvostChief Learning Officer, and UCM Military and Veterans Services. For more information, visit ucmo.edu/ archmusm, or contact Amber Clifford-Napoleone at 660-543-4649, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at James C. Kirkpatrick Library 1470. June is Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, a global initiative promoting awareness for cognitive decline and the mission to find a cure. Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia that causes memory, thinking and behavior problems, currently accounting for 60-80% of dementia cases. There is no current cure, but treatments for symptoms and research efforts continue to fight this disease. With Alzheimer’s or other dementias, early detection matters! Knowing the ten warning signs of Alzheimer’s and scheduling an appointment with you or your loved one’s primary care provider can help maximize the benefit of treatment. 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s: (According to the Alzheimer’s Association) 1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life. 2. Challenges in planning or solving problems 3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, work or at leisure 4. Time or place confusion 5. Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships 6. Problems with words in speaking or writing 7. Misplacing or losing things 8. Decreased or poor judgment 9. Withdrawal from work or social activities 10. Changes in mood and/or personality

The greatest known risk factor is increasing age with the majority of people with Alzheimer’s are 65+. Western Missouri Medical Center (WMMC) and Bridges Senior Behavioral Health are proud to serve area seniors (65+) who are affected by any cognitive decline. Bridges Senior Behavioral Health is a 12-bed, secure, acute care senior adult unit that provides special behavioral and psychiatric needs. By maintaining a safe, therapeutic environment and providing education to seniors, as well as their families/caregivers, Bridges Senior Behavioral Health is able to help bridge the gap between seniors living with cognitive delay and their families. Seniors also often suffer from increased depression, grief over a loss, anxiety, changes in memory, appetite loss and combative/aggressive behaviors that require specialized care to meet their unique emotional and safety needs. Seeing these changes in your loved one can be scary, but the staff at Bridges Senior Behavioral Health is available to discuss your option. To learn more about cognitive delay, other behavioral changes you may see in your senior loved ones or begin the referral process, call Bridges Senior Behavioral Health at (660) 262-7590 or schedule an appointment with your primary care provider today.

As you accomplish each task, you will feel a sense of accomplishment, which will fuel you to take on the next challenge with vigor and determination. By working in this piecemeal fashion, you will achieve the objective of the bigger picture without getting bogged down by it.

6 Tips to Crushing Your Deadlines By: KC AGU A lot of us are usually overcome with excitement at the prospect of a new job or taking on a new challenge. Unfortunately, the novelty does not last very long when we get hit with wave after wave of deadlines.

4. Work in terms of urgency, not importance When scheduling tasks in your calendar, start from the one with Not everyone is mentally or physically capable of handling that. the closest due date. It may not be as important as subsequent With every assignment we fail to complete, report we forget to tasks, but if its time of completion is shorter, that is all that turn in and meeting we arrive late to, we push ourselves further matters. Besides, you need to get everything done, anyway, so into the wormhole. might as well start at the start. How do you turn this situation around? How do you stay on top If you are so bothered about the more important tasks, do your of the situation and accomplish all of your tasks in good time? best to complete the preceding tasks as quickly as possible Here are a few tips. so you can finally start work on more pertinent issues. 1. Do not rely on mental notes You might have amazing brain power, but you still shouldn't trust it to hold every little piece of necessary information. The avalanche of tasks you have to complete daily at the office often puts us under a lot of pressure.

5. Shut the door on distractions While you have control over how you fragment projects, schedule activities and prioritize tasks, it's often hard to anticipate or plan for distractions. No matter how important these may seem, these distractions will ultimately only serve to slow you down. Try to avoid as many of these interruptions as possible by delegating your other responsibilities to your most trusted and capable employees. Shut off your phone and internet connection.

Whenever a new job arrives at your desk, don't just make a mental note of it and go about your duties. Schedule it in your calendar immediately, with duration and due dates indicated. This provides a task map that clearly represents the chronological order of your responsibilities. Also, use taskreminder apps to help you stay on alert about your duties. That way, even if your mental note fails you, you can always rely on You can even leave the office and check yourself into a resort if you have to, but make sure that these steps ensure zero your trusty calendar. distractions and interruptions. 2. Now is the right time If there is a project on your desk, do it immediately if possible. Yes, we set start and end times for every project, but it doesn't make any sense to put something off if you don't have to. That way, you can stay ahead of time and lessen the risk of not meeting your deadlines. It also creates a buffer period that will allow you much-needed time to retrace your steps if you derail or make a mistake while handling the project. 3. Break down your project Don't look at the big picture of a project. Instead, it helps to fragment the project -- to break the big picture into smaller digestible units. Then, set miniature deadlines for each of these tasks and tackle them one after the other.

6. Always plan one step further. I personally see project deadlines as the same as making travel plans. You wouldn't just hop on a plane without planning, and I don’t wait until the last minutes before I begin planning my project deadlines. Sometimes, these two things can intersect. For example, I need to travel to other countries for business meetings. And, for a little while, I used to miss these meetings or arrive at locations haphazardly due to hectic schedules. Now, though, I personally pay and handle all my flight issues in advance using Justfly. Planning ahead is always a good idea. Not only will it help you meet diverse deadlines, but you’ll end up ahead of future ones, too.
