WMMC Receives Recertification for Surgical Programs Two Western Missouri Medical Center (WMMC) surgical programs have been recently recertified by national quality improvement programs. The Joint Commission (TJC) recertified WMMC’s orthopedic clinic, Western Missouri Bone & Joint, for both total knee replacement and total hip replacement with the Gold Seal of Approval ®. These triennial certifications follow a rigorous on-site review where TJC experts evaluated WMMC’s compliance with national disease-specific care standards as well as hip and knee replacement-specific requirements. Clinical practice guidelines and performance measures were also assessed. The medical center has held these certifications for three years prior to the recertification. The Gold Seal of Approval ® is a symbol of quality that reflects WMMC’s commitment to providing safe and effective patient care. Western Missouri Bone & Joint offers a variety of orthopedic services including partial, total and revision joint replacement, minimally invasive arthroscopic surgeries and sports-related injury treatment. The WMMC bariatric program at Surgical Services of Warrensburg has recently received re-accreditation through the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP), a joint program of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. The triennial re-accreditation cycle speaks volumes to the commitment of WMMC staff to high-quality metabolic and bariatric surgical care. The program’s original accreditation was received in March 2015. Patients seeking surgical weight loss treatment have a high-quality choice for receiving treatment at a nationally accredited program that meets the highest standards for patient safety and quality of care without the hassle of travel. The accredited center offers preoperative and postoperative care designed specifically for severely obese patients. Robert Kenney, DO, specializes in minimally invasive surgical approaches. The Captain and the Judge-Building Camps, Forts, Dams, Bridges and Character Across the Ozarks Book Signing Join us as we celebrate the release of The Captain and the Judge-Building Camps, Forts, Dams, Bridges and Character Across the Ozarks authored by local residents Natalie (Jr.) Prussing Halpin and Lisa Irle at a book signing 5-7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 8 at the Warrensburg Community Center, 445 E. Gay, Warrensburg. The book follows the friendship and careers of Natalie Wilson-the Captain-who established Camp Carry-On in the Ozarks for young women and who later directed the Girl Scout camp at Knob Noster State Park from 1949-1952, and Judge Max Prussing, who married Wilson and later served as a Camden County official and as the chief civil engineer who oversaw the construction of Fort Leonard Wood. Prussing Halpin’s intention for writing The Captain and the Judge-Building Camps, Forts, Dams, Bridges and Character Across the Ozarks was to tell others the story of her parents, two hard-working individuals whose careers excelled in adventurous and groundbreaking careers, never seeking recognition. Prussing Halpin and Irle worked together to produce an inspirational piece that includes a collection of historical photos. The book signing will include remarks/readings from the authors, refreshments and an opportunity for attendees to have their book signed by the authors. For those unable to attend but would like to purchase The Captain and the Judge-Building Camps, Forts, Dams, Bridges and Character Across the Ozarks, please visit acclaimpress.com or any Cowley Distributing store location including Reader’s World, located at 503 N. Maguire, St. F, Warrensburg.

January 8 through February 3, 2018 OUR CHANGING LANDSCAPE Opening Reception, January 10, 3-5 p.m. Artist Presentation by James Brown of Lee’s Summit, MO Thursday, January 23, 2018, 9 - 10 a.m. A new exhibition at the University of Central Missouri Gallery of Art & Design presents an exhibit of contemporary fiber art sponsored by Studio Art Quilt Associates of Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. Our Changing Landscape opens to the public on Monday, January 8 in the Main Gallery. Lee’s Summit, MO artist James Brown will speak about his work and the exhibition on Thursday, January 23 at 9 a.m. in the gallery. The exhibit continues through February 3, 2018. Landscape as defined by Merriam-Webster is “a picture representing a view of natural scenery” or “the art of depicting such scenery” and is also defined as “a particular area of activity” as in “the political landscape.” The show features over 25 pieces made by members of the Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma region of Studio Art Quilt Associates. Artists were encouraged to interpret their own “Changing Landscape” whether abstract, graphic or representational. Artists may have been inspired by a representational landscape or have chosen a broader interpretation of a particular area of activity. Our Changing Landscape could encompass concepts such as seasonal changes, climate change, changing / lost habitat, the Internet, urban vs. rural, day vs. night, etc. Pieces were chosen for Our Changing Landscape by artist Judith Trager. Trager is an early proponent of the art quilt, who has been a studio artist in Boulder, CO for more than 30 years with more than 400 quilts to her credit. Her work is represented in prominent collections including the National Quilt Museum, the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum, Kaiser Permanente, and many health care and corporate collections. Trager is the author of "Rooted in Tradition: Art Quilts of the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum," many journal and magazine articles, and an instructor with Craftsy.com. "Our Changing Landscape provides an opportunity to share a collection of contemporary quilts that reflect the power that this art form has to serve as a voice for expression and artist activism,” explains the exhibit’s organizer Christian Cutler, UCM Gallery Director. The UCM Gallery of Art & Design is located in the Art Center Building at 217 Clark St. in Warrensburg, just across the street from the James C. Kirkpatrick Library. Hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., select Saturdays from 12 to 4 p.m., or by appointment. Admission is free, and groups are welcome. For more information or directions phone 660-543-4498. For Additional Information: Christian Cutler - Gallery Director
