We are delighted to welcome the first citizen of South Dublin, Mayor Dermot Looney, to Ballyroan Library to launch Children’s Book Festival on Tuesday October 1st at 10.45am. This will be followed by Jack Flash’s Fantastic Magic Show. You are invited to enjoy magic and juggling along with loads of audience participation. Watch and laugh as a child makes an 8 foot straw appear, smile when eggs appear and disappear, and giggle as Jack’s invisible rabbit Hoppy runs amok. 5th and 6th class children will enjoy this.

Ballyroan Library on Monday 1st of October at 10.45am

Presented by South Dublin Libraries with the support of the Writers in Libraries Scheme (Poetry Ireland), this project will bring the events of 1913 alive to 6th class children. Brian Gallagher will talk to each class about his book, Across the Divide, which is set during the Lockout, and about writing fiction based on real events. The children will also receive a writing workshop with author Maura Byrne to enable them to produce newspaper articles relevant to that time. In addition, each pupil and teacher will receive an information pack on the 1913 Lockout produced by South Dublin Libraries.

This promises to be a brilliant and exciting session with renowned author and illustrator Mo Willems. We’re sure that Mo’s bio from his website “Mo Willems makes funny drawings that hopefully will make you laugh” gives the correct idea about this event! Mo Willems’ works in children’s books, animation, television, theatre, and bubble gum card painting. He has been awarded 3 Caldecott Honors, 2 Geisel Medals, 6 Emmy Awards, 3 Geisel Honors, a Helen Hayes nomination, and multiple bubble gum cards. He is best known for his characters Knuffle Bunny, The Pigeon and Elephant and Piggie. This event is in association with Children’s Books Ireland and Walker Books. All teachers booking for this event will also receive a free classroom activity pack. Children in 2nd and 3rd class will love this event.

It takes a hero to defeat a God and something monstrous is happening under Dublin…. Well we can’t wait to hear what Alan Early, author of Arthur Quinn has to tell us about this. Alan’s third title in the Arthur Quinn trilogy, Arthur Quinn and Hells Keeper, has just been published so you can ask him all about it. This event is most suitable for children in 5th and 6th class and each session will last approximately 50 minutes. Sheena Wilkinson has won a number of literary awards including two Children’s Books Ireland awards (Honour Award for Fiction and Children’s Choice). This year she published her first novel for younger readers. Too many ponies has received rave reviews and is a must read, especially for anyone who love horses. Suitable for boys and girls in 3rd to 5th class. Clondalkin Library on Wednesday October 2nd at 10am and 11.30am

Kevin Kiely’s latest fiction novel for young readers SOS Lusitania is set on board the huge liner that was sunk off the coast of Cork in 1915, just three years after the Titanic disaster. But unlike the Titanic, this was no accident. Kevin’s earlier title A horse called El Dorado is a hugely popular classroom novel. This event will suit 4th to 6th classes. Alan has been drawing and writing comics for a few years now. His best known work is Sancho, which he co-created with Ian Whelan, in fact he was short listed for two Eagle Awards for it. Alan is also the creator of The Big Break Detectives Casebook, a graphic novel for younger readers, and the Murder can be Fatal mysteries. He is a graphic designer by day, and spends his evenings writing, drawing, and attempting to keep his children from stealing his pencils! Booking is essential for the workshop which is suitable for 3rd to 5th classes. Each session will last for about 1 hour. We are delighted to welcome Irish author Erika McGann to our libraries this year. Erika’s first book, The Demon Notebook, was published in 2012 and the follow up, The Broken Spell is now available. “Trainee witch Grace and her four best friends love to have fun with spells. But the daring friends make a magical mistake that drags the past into the present. Suddenly Grace has to work out who she can really trust ...” Erika is looking forward to discussing the book and her writing with children from 5th and 6th Class Clondalkin Library on Thursday October 10th at 10am and 11.15am

Dance, drama, fun and cowboy hats are all on offer in workshops facilitated by author Gillian Perdue. In 2002 Gillian won the Eilís Dillon Memorial Award for her first book Adam’s Starling. She has written three books in the O’Brien Panda series featuring the brave Conor, a boy who does things his own way, no matter what anyone thinks. 1st and 2nd classes will love this event which will last for about 50 minutes. Artist Olivia Golden is visiting us for the first time in 2013. A talented artist, Olivia has illustrated 19 books varying from novels for the teenage market to picture books for the very young. She will give 2 workshops on creating comic strips. Each workshop will last about 90 minutes and is best suit to children in 4th, 5th or 6th class. This was a huge hit in our libraries last year and we are delighted to have it back again. Little Big Top theatre group invite children into a sumptuous environment full of colour, shapes and fun! A mischievous Peg-a-saurours, an urgent shape hunt and a bubbly finale all add up to make this the most engaging maths lesson you’ll ever see. Each show lasts for about 45 minutes and is most suitable for Junior and Senior Infants. This should be a morning of fun and laughter and a brilliant learning experience.

Irish artist and book illustrator, Jonathan Barry visits us to chat to children about art and illustration of books. He has illustrated many famous children’s books, including The Narnia series, The Wind in The Willows, Alice in Wonderland, and The Secret Garden. Jonathan has a keen interest in both the Titanic story and Dracula so these sessions promise to be very entertaining. Author and illustrator Oisin McGann needs little or no introduction. He has written and illustrated numerous titles including the Mad Grandad series and the Forbidden Files series for younger children and many novels for the older reader. Oisin visits our library in Castletymon to read one or two of his shorter books. Using an easel and display pages, Oisin will bring the pages of these books to life for the children attending. Children from 1st to 3rd class will enjoy this event. Castletymon Library on Monday October 14th at 10am and 11.30am

This lively session with storyteller Patrick Ryan is something we are really looking forward to. Patrick has worked as a storyteller, writer and teacher for over three decades. His practice has developed through the influences of family and friends in America, Ireland and Britain where he has collected stories and studied storytelling all that time. 1st to 4th class children will be totally enthralled. We’re delighted to welcome Paula Leydon on her first visit to South Dublin Libraries. Paula is an award winning author of The Butterfly Heart and The Sleeping Baobab Tree. Both of these wonderful titles have been endorsed by Amnesty International. Paula will facilitate two creative writing sessions for children from 4th and 5th class. Calling all valiant Beast Quest fans! Help the good wizard Aduro, in this interactive event, to solve cryptic puzzles and free the beasts from Malvel’s evil spell and participate in a Beast Quest Tournament . . . Also get a sneak peek of Adam Blade’s new series, Sea Quest! Deep in the water lurks a new breed of Beast . . . This promises to be a fantastic event for children in 3rd to 6th class who love the Beast Quest series. This event brings together 3 of the best known Irish authors who will discuss and chat with the children about their books and writing. The event, aimed at 3rd to 6th class, will appeal particularly to boys but as we all know….girls do sport too!

Born in Dublin, Gerard Siggins has lived almost all his life in the shadow of the old East Stand at Lansdowne Road. His earliest memory of the ground is at age seven, when he was flattened by Ken Kennedy when the Ulster hooker crashed into the touchline seats! This sports reporter will be discussing his first book for children, Rugby Spirit. It is a great read for 4th to 6th classes and will particularly appeal to those hard to reach boy readers. Joe O’Brien needs little or no introduction. This event will focus on his trilogy of sports books; Little Croker, Féile Fever and Tiger Boots all featuring Danny Wilde and the adventures of his GAA team Littlestown Crokes. Alan Nolan is well known for his comic books and graphic novels. Alan turns his hand to sport in his new book due out in early 2014. Fintan’s Fifteen features a school hurling team and will be a mix of text and Alan’s famous graphics. Gerard Siggins is a Dublin journalist with a keen interest in many sports. His book for children Rugby Spirit features a young Eoin who has just started secondary school in a famous rugby school not far from Lansdowne Road. The exciting sequel to Rugby Spirit is due out in Spring 2014. Sarah Webb needs little or no introduction. An award winning author of several adult books she also writes a hugely popular series for readers of age 10+, Ask Amy Green. Sarah is an expert on children’s books and reading and is looking forward to reading and chatting to children from 5th and 6th class. Ballyroan Library on Monday October 21st at 10am and 11.15am

Author and illustrator Tatyana Feeney is visiting us for the first time this year. She is the author and illustrator of several books, including Small Bunny’s Blue Blanket and Little Owl’s Orange Scarf. She is originally from North Carolina but now lives in Trim, Co Meath. Her workshop will consist of story time followed by an art activity and is most suitable for junior and senior infants. Mobile Library Service on Wednesday October 23rd at 10.30am and 11.30am

Printing & Origami Printers Hat-making workshop with the National Print Museum. This workshop comprises of two activities and children are split into two groups. Group 1 will start with the Handsetting & Printing session, while Group 2 will begin with the Origami Hat-making session. Following this the two groups will swop over so that each child has the opportunity to complete both activities. This great hands-on workshop will last about an hour and will be a treat for 1st to 6th classes.

Andrew Lane is the author of the Young Sherlock Holmes series of young adult novels, starting with Death Cloud. He has also written numerous spin-off novels based on the BBC sci-fi television series Doctor Who, as well as definitive guides to Babylon 5 and the Wallace and Gromit films, and is the author of The Bond Files: An Unofficial Guide to the World’s Greatest Secret Agent. This is a simply wonderful event for 5th and 6th classes. County Library, Tallaght on Monday September 30th at 10.30am

Conor Kostick is the author of several books including Epic, Saga, Edda and Move, as well as The Book of Curses for younger readers. Conor was the recipient of a Special Merit Award at the Reading Association of Ireland Awards in 2009 for his book Move and for his contribution to science-fiction writing in Ireland. He has achieved international success with Epic and Saga. His visit is suitable for 5th and 6th classes. Lucan Library on Tuesday October 22nd at 10am and 11.15am

Carmel Ui Cheallaigh brings her Irish picture book Spidey to life in this interactive bi-lingual author visit. This is a class visit that is suitable for junior and senior infants. Spooky Tales: Creative Writing Competition Ok… get those creative minds working and write us a very short story. There are three age categories for this competition, 7 – 9 year olds, 10 – 12 year olds and 13 – 15 year olds. Any entry in excess of one page will be automatically eliminated; short and sweet is the order of the day. Don’t forget to include name, age, contact number and school on the back of your story. Teachers, pick your three best entries and we are asking you to get those to us by Friday 25th of October.

Colouring Competition For those of you who prefer pictures to words, why not colour in one of our competition pictures. Pick up a copy in your local library or email schools@ sdublincoco.ie for an ecopy. Age 6 and under.

Anna Kelly leads a fun and creative jewellery making workshop in which each child gets to design and make their own jewellery & keep it as a memento. As with our writing competition we would ask that schools only send in 3 entries per class. The closing date for this competition is also Friday 25th of October.
