Capitals' Ward was trapped in Dallas bathroom usatoday.com - Washington Capitals forward Joel Ward has done several things in his NHL career to earn accolades from his teammates. But nothing is likely to match the team-building experience he had prior to a Capitals' road game against the Dallas Stars. According to the Washington Post, after a team breakfast at the Omni hotel in Dallas, Ward excused himself to go to the bathroom. He then found the door to his stall would not open. Suddenly trapped, Ward took to Twitter (@JRandalWard42). "Stuck in the washroom … someone help?" he tweeted Saturday morning, along with the hashtags "#Dallasproblems," "#OmniHotel" and "#validexcuse." Before long, an awkward moment was stretching into several minutes. "Basically we had the whole Dallas SWAT team come in and still couldn't open the door," Ward told the newspaper. "The latch on the inside where I was would turn but the bolt wouldn't move; I think it was stripped." After more than 40 minutes of hotel staff attempting to rescue Ward, teammates Karl Alzner and John Carlson found a ladder and managed to help him climb over the top of the stall door. Naturally, the entire adventure was documented on Twitter by Carlson. Shortly after, the team stepped on the bus for the trip to American Airlines Center.

99-year-old Iowa woman gets high school diploma
Did you know that a bushel of corn weighs around 56 pounds.
SORVA merges, becomes SCMTA
Associated Press WATERLOO, Iowa – A 99-year-old Iowa woman who dropped out of a high school in 1932 has finally received her diploma. Audrey Crabtree was surrounded by family and friends on Monday as Waterloo Community Schools presented her with an honorary diploma during an education board meeting. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports Crabtree dropped out of high school as a senior in 1932 due to an injury and to care for her grandmother. She went on to run her own business for nearly three decades. At the meeting, Crabtree received a diploma, a copy of her last report card and high school memorabilia from her time at Waterloo East High School. She also received more than 100 handmade congratulatory cards from middle school students.
MANISTIQUE — The Schoolcraft County Snowmobile Association (SCSA) and SORVA of Schoolcraft County have officially merged into one organization that will henceforth be known as Schoolcraft County Motorized Trails Association (SCMTA). The merger was done to better utilize limited resources of time, manpower and money.
Family Farm Memories: Mother Hen and the Ducklings CAPPER's Staff www.cappersfarmer.com An Oregon woman tells the story of how Mother Hen, one of her Leghorn chickens, raised a clutch of orphaned ducklings. In the springtime on our family farm, our white Leghorn chickens would be ready to set. A nest of up to 15 eggs was made ready for these hens. In three weeks small, yellow fluffy chickens pecked their way out of the eggshells. Their downy feathers were so soft to touch. They soon grew, with the soft fluff being replaced by feathers. Wild Mallard ducks nested each year near our grain field. On one occasion our dog caught and killed a mother duck who was on her nest. Our dad rescued the eggs and brought them home. They were put under a setting hen. In due time they hatched. Mother Hen was so proud of her family and was soon able to take them out into the farmyard. The young ducklings realized there was a pond nearby and were soon swimming merrily. Poor Mother Hen stood on the shores "clucking" for her brood. The young ducks were happy until dusk and then were glad to return to their Mother Hen and their nesting box. This continued day after day, with the Mother Hen waiting for her family to come to her. The ducks grew and soon Mother Hen let them go to the pond alone while she stayed in the yard with the chickens. Myrtle Barker Monmouth, Oregon
Birthday cake attacked in Wash. courthouse KELSO, Wash. (AP) — A woman in Washington state brought her child's birthday cake into a courthouse, thinking that would be safer than leaving it in the car with her dog. She realized her error when a stranger grabbed and ate handfuls of the cake. The chocolate cake passed through a metal detector and was sitting on a table when it was attacked. Cake and frosting went flying when a Cowlitz County sheriff's deputy grabbed the cake molester and took him to the ground. The Daily News of Longview says more deputies rushed to help, only to end up smeared with frosting. Deputy Joe Connor told KATU-TV that 50-year-old Robert Fredrickson was arrested for investigation of third-degree theft. The Daily News says the man had been on his way to a court appearance. A local grocery offered to replace the cake.

Man Stuck In Chimney After 'Stupid Pet Trick' In Washington State TACOMA, Wash. — Firefighters chiseled a hole through bricks to rescue a man who had gotten himself stuck inside a 20-inch wide chimney space at a Washington home that had been converted to apartments. The young man was not hurt and was not suspected of a crime, but it's unclear why he apparently climbed into the unused chimney, Tacoma Battalion Chief Dyre Fudge said. "Stories range from `hide and seek" to `repairing the ceiling. Nobody was able to get the straight story," Fudge said. "I'm in my 35th year, and it's something different every day. You can't make it up," he said. Firefighters were called about 1:30 a.m. to help the young man who was wedged at the second-floor level of the three-story house. A technical team trained in confined-space rescues was called in to rip through a wall and use power equipment to cut a hole in the chimney. Firefighters lowered a rope to the man to hold him in place until he was able to step out about a half-hour later. "He was never very panicking and had no real respiratory distress," Fudge said. There were other people living in the house, but no one seemed to know why the man apparently climbed into the chimney at the third-floor level and slid down like Santa Claus. "No real clue," Fudge said. "Just one of those stupid pet tricks, maybe."
Dangerous Walk to the Outhouse CAPPER's Staff, www.cappersfarmer.com The old outhouse is quite vivid in my memory, especially the cold winters, or during an electrical storm. One outstanding incident that is told often in our family doesn't pertain to either of these, however. We lived on a farm in northeastern Kansas. I had three older sisters, so when I needed to go out back there was always someone to go with me, because we had an old hen that would attack me. Even after her chicks were grown she would flogg and peck me. One fall after my sisters started to school, I asked my mother to accompany me, but she was busy canning and couldn't leave it. She told me to pick up a stick and hit her if she started after me. I went out the door very quietly, but there was no stick in sight. When I was about halfway to my destination, I heard it coming. I was by the woodpile so I picked up a stick of cookstove wood and swung for her head. She staggered a ways then dropped. I was afraid, for it wasn't the hen but the big Rhode Island rooster. I didn't see how I could hide anything that big. I then remembered where I had started to go. I drug him in and managed to drop him in a hole. I didn't say a word to mother about it. It wasn't long until father came home for lunch. As soon as he got in the door he asked what was wrong with the rooster, that he was making an awful fuss about something. They decided they had best go check. I decided right quick that I had best tell them what I knew. It turned out what I thought was a dead rooster was only stunned, and when he came to he was a very unhappy rooster. Father opened the service door on the back of the outhouse and set it free. My parents didn't waste any time about substituting the stick of stovewood with a lighter weight stick. They didn't want me to knock out anymore of their chickens. Vera Howard Grants, New Mexico

Maryland woman facing charges after car goes into lake while texting WALDORF, Md. – The Charles County Sheriff's Office says a woman told authorities she was texting behind the wheel when her car left the road and landed in a Waldorf lake. The sheriff's office says the 25-year-old Temple Hills woman was driving on St. Charles Parkway on Tuesday when she lost control and hit a tree. The car was then propelled 60 feet into Westfield Lake. The car was submerged in five feet of water, but the woman escaped through a window. She didn't have any visible signs of injury, but officials say she was taken to an area hospital for treatment. The sheriff's office says the woman told investigators she was texting when she lost control of the car.

Thanksgiving Turkey Trauma? Call the Butterball Hotline Butterball.com - One aspiring Thanksgiving chef who was short on time had a great idea: thaw his frozen turkey by wrapping it in an electric blanket. It was Nicole Johnson’s job to tell him that wasn’t the way to go. Johnson is one of 57 food experts who will staff the Butterball Turkey Talk-Line this year. While most of us are enjoying our turkey dinner, they’ll be manning the phones at hotline headquarters in Naperville, Ill. “We’re here to counsel people through what we call ‘turkey trauma,’” she told ABC News. Butterball's hotline, 1-800-BUTTERBALL, is open weekdays from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. CST in November and December. Calls are answered in English and Spanish. The Talk-Line got its start in 1981. That year 11,000 people called in during November and December, the two months when the help line is in operation. Last year, there were 12,000 calls on Thanksgiving Day alone and thousands more questions online and through social media. Johnson, who has a degree in nutrition dietetics, says, “The number one inquiry we get is, ‘How do I go about thawing my turkey?’” (Hint: Forget the electric blanket.) The most important advice: Don’t thaw the turkey on the countertop or in the sink, that’s a perfect way to grow bacteria. The best method is in the refrigerator, but that takes a lot of time, 24 hours for every four pounds of turkey. You can also submerge the bird in cold water for a thawing time of half an hour per pound. But you have to change out the cold water every 30 minutes. Talking turkey is serious business; those taking the sometimes frantic phone calls go through Butterball University to learn everything there is to know about turkeys and how to cook them properly. Of course on Thanksgiving Day, Johnson and her coworkers won’t have time to cook their own turkeys; they’ll be too busy telling callers how to safely and deliciously cook theirs. Johnson doesn’t mind. For those in the turkey talk game, that day is the Superbowl.

Ohio capital city fights rat problems with fliers COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Without money to bring back its rat-control program, the health department for Ohio's capital city plans to map complaints and spread fliers educating residents about dealing with the rodents. The Columbus Dispatch reports the city's service line has received over 200 rat complaints involving rental properties this year, almost reaching the total for last year. In August, Columbus also started logging complaints from nonrental properties, with more than a dozen so far. Some people hope Columbus Public Health resurrects a rat-control pilot program conducted a few years ago, but the proposed 2014 budget doesn't include money for that. Virginia Tomolillo has trapped 22 rats in her yard this year. She blames a neighbor who leaves dog food outdoors, and she says city education efforts might help.

Man stole bags of crawfish tails THIBODAUX, LA., (AP) - A man stole bags of crawfish tails from a grocery store in Thibodaux, La., and then ran to his car, which had been fitted with an ignition interlock device as a result of a drunken driving conviction. He tried blowing into it to start the car, but he was so winded that he did not succeed in his first few tries. When the cops came to his home, he told them he had been at work until 4:30 p.m. They arrested him “after telling him it was not yet 4:30.”
Hunter Orange Clothing Requirements MDNR - You may not hunt with any device, or trap with any firearm, on any lands during daylight hunting hours from Aug. 15 - Apr. 30 unless you wear a hat, cap, vest, jacket or rain gear of highly visible orange color, commonly referred to as hunter orange. Exception: This law does not apply to those hunting waterfowl, crow, wild turkey, or to those engaged in the sport of falconry. $100,000 reward offered in missing student case
Thoughts to put a smile on your face
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A $100,000 reward is being offered to help solve the case of a Michigan State University student who has been missing for five years. The Lansing State Journal and WLNS-TV report police believe 34-year-old Krista Lueth was a homicide victim. Investigators have said they don't believe her disappearance was a random act. Officials on Wednesday announced the reward, which was made possible by an anonymous donor. Lueth was last seen the evening of Nov. 11, 2008, at the house she rented in Lansing. Lueth was pursuing a second bachelor's degree in horticulture and had attended classes at the East Lansing school earlier that day. When Lueth left the house, the State Journal reports she locked the door, leaving a pan of food on the stove covered by a plate.

Beef 101: How To Choose Wisely (NAPSA)-Food for thought: What do you know about the meat you eat? More and more consumers are looking to demystify the meat counter and answer such questions as: Why choose grass-fed beef? What about antibiotic-free meat? What are the best value cuts? Armand Ferrante, a 40-year veteran of the meat industry and recent champion of Whole Foods Market’s 2012 Best Butcher contest, offers five tips to help shoppers choose the best beef for their table and their budget: 1. The best cuts for the money? London Broil, Flat Iron, Tri-Tip or the Jersey Boneless Short Rib steak, a tender new cut that Ferrante created for the Best Butcher contest. 2. For lean beef, look for grass-fed. 3. For super savory, tender beef, choose dry-aged. 4. Know how the animal was raised. At Whole Foods Market, all beef comes from animals raised without antibiotics or added hormones, and the 5-Step(tm) Animal Welfare Rating tells customers about farmers’ raising practices. 5.Questions? Just ask. A trained butcher can custom cut, grind to order, recommend value items and easy cooking ideas and more. A flavorful dry rub is a foolproof way to season any cut of beef. Chef Tim Byres of SMOKE and Chicken Scratch restaurants (Dallas) created a flavorful recipe that’s designed for easy kitchen preparation. Just dust it generously over the beef and voilà-the cut is dressed to impress.
Bet you didn't know..... It is impossible for most people to lick their own elbow. (try it!) A crocodile cannot stick its tongue out. A shrimp's heart is in its head. In a study of 200,000 ostriches over a period of 80 years, no one reported a single case where an ostrich buried its head in the sand, or attempted to do so. It is physically impossible for pigs to look up into the sky. The "sixth sick sheik's sixth sheep's sick" is believed to be the toughest tongue twister in the English language. If you sneeze too hard, you could fracture a rib. Rats multiply so quickly that in 18 months, two rats could have over a million descendants. Wearing headphones for just an hour could increase the bacteria in your ear by 700 times. In every episode of Seinfeld there was a Superman somewhere in the picture. November 23rd is Family Volunteer Day http://www.generationon.org Family Volunteer Day, a Points of Light signature day of service, demonstrates and celebrates the power of families who volunteer together, supporting their neighborhoods, communities and the world. For 22 years, Family Volunteer Day has been held on the Saturday before Thanksgiving to “kick-off” the holiday season with giving and service. This year Family Volunteer Day takes place on November 23rd. Volunteering as a family is fun! Family volunteering encourages the members of a family to volunteer as a unit. It can be done by the whole family together, by one parent and one child or teen, or with extended family such as grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. It can be as simple as creating cards for children in the hospital or as complex as bonding hundreds of families together in a day of service at a community park. However families choose to do it, families engaged in service can help mobilize thousands of new volunteers and instill in the next generation a lifelong commitment to volunteering. Families are super teams! The combination of ages and generations in your family means you have everything needed to effect meaningful change in your community: energy, creativity, passion, knowledge, experience and different perspectives and skills. Chances are that you will learn something from the experience of helping others.
The Daily Mining Gazette Those of us old enough to remember how stringently the Three Rs were once taught might appreciate the following quotes from various age groups: Some are new, others familiar: A first grade school teacher presented each child in her class the first half of a well-known expression and asked them to come up with the remainder of the expression. The results might surprise you: Happy is the bride who - gets all the presents. It's always darkest before - Daylight Saving Time. Never underestimate the power of - termites. You can lead a horse to water, but - how? Love all - trust me. A penny saved is - not much. A miss is as good as a - Mister. You can't teach an old dog new - math. If you lie down with dogs, you'll - smell bad in the morning. The pen is mightier than the - pigs. An idle mind is - the best way to relax. Two's company, three's - the Musketeers.

Largest collection of ‘Star Wars’ memorabilia
Steve Sansweet has amassed an estimated 300,000 unique “Star Wars” items at Rancho ObiWan in Northern California. As of May 15, 2013, only 90,546 of those items had been accurately audited and catalogued — but that number was sufficient to beat the previous Guinness World Records figure by a factor of four. Sansweet estimated that the cataloguing process will take years to complete, as his collection continues to grow. PHOT BY: Ryan Schude / Guinness World Records

Pigeon fancier ordered to get rid of birds ENGLAND - Roy Day of Northfleet, Kent, England, had 20 homing pigeons in his garden shed. Neighbors complained of the noise and smell, and the Gravesham Borough Council notified Day that the pigeons were a health problem and that he would have to sell or give his pigeons away. Day says that if he took the pigeons somewhere else, they would come back, because that is what homing pigeons do. "They gave me a seven-day deadline to get rid of them, but even if they went 150-odd miles away, they'd still come back — they are homing pigeons." He is still trying to find “new” homes for them.

Montana dog that ate 5 $100 bills gets bailed out by US Treasury Department HELENA, Mont.(AP) – A Montana man who painstakingly gathered and reassembled parts of five $100 bills eaten by his golden retriever has been reimbursed by the U.S. Treasury for the “muttilated” currency. Wayne Klinkel of Helena received a $500 check, the Independent Record reported. “It was great to get the check after all the crap I went through,” Klinkel, a graphic artist at the newspaper, joked. His 12-year-old dog, Sundance, downed all but half of one of the bills in December. Sundance, a rescue from a Wyoming animal shelter, snacked on the cash left in the family vehicle while Klinkel and his wife ate at a restaurant, but left a $1 bill untouched. They were on a road trip to visit their daughter in Colorado. Klinkel carefully picked through the dog’s droppings over the next few days to recover parts of the bills and his daughter recovered more when the snow melted in the spring. Klinkel cleaned and carefully reassembled the bills, put them in plastic bags and sent them to the U.S. Treasury in April with an explanation. He got a receipt for the bills 10 days later, and didn’t hear from the Treasury until he received the check. “I gave Sundance a pat, showed it to him and told him not to eat it,” said Klinkel. He said there wasn’t any correspondence with the check, but the memo section in the bottom left read: “MUT.CURR REFUND.”
Bear Obeys Command JUNEAU, Alaska AP - If only all unwelcome bar guests were this obliging. A black bear walked into the bar at the Alaskan Hotel in downtown Juneau. Bartender Ariel SvetlikMcCarthy says she freaked out and yelled, "No bear! Get out! No! You can't be in here!" The bear complied, leaving the bar within seconds. State biologist Ryan Scott says it's rare for black bears to go inside Juneau businesses, but they have wandered inside homes before. He tells KTOO the staff did a great job, and it was good news the bear left. State wildlife officials have killed two nuisance bears in Juneau this summer.

Take a Hike By Heidi Hunt www.motherearthnews.com It's the holiday season and — for better or worse — we are all affected by it. This is a time that some yearn for all year while others wish it would just never happen. Whichever side you are on, there is no denying that the holiday season can be stressful. So, maybe this week you might consider chucking all of the shopping and planning and cooking, just for an hour or so, and take your family out for a walk — no, not at the mall! The mall can be a great place to exercise during inclement weather, but the goal of this walk is to relieve stress and spend some noncommercial time with your family. No matter where you live, you can go outside and walk. Walk around the block, to the corner market, the school playground or your neighbor's house. Take a few deep breaths before beginning, walk with a long stride and notice the world around you. Look at the trees, listen to the birds and smell the aromas of winter — moist soil, crisp dry nose-stinging air or soggy aromatic air. For the more adventuresome, you might want to go to a park or find a quiet dirt road for your walk. But sometime in the next few days, just for an hour, take a walk, I promise you will all feel better for doing so. Read more: http://www.motherearthnews.com

ROYERSFORD, Pa. (AP) — A suburban Philadelphia man has perhaps the most valuable tenspot you'll ever see. Thirty-nine-year-old Billy Baeder, of Royersford, owns a 1933 $10 silver certificate that an auctioneer says is worth at least a half-million dollars. The bill bears an unusual inscription, "Payable in silver coin to bearer on demand," and has the serial number "A00000001A." It is perhaps the most valuable bill printed since 1929, when bills were shrunk to their current size. Baeder told Philly.com that his late father, also a collector, bought the bill two dozen years ago for about the price of a compact car. Matthew Quinn, assistant director of currency for auction house Stack's Bowers, says the bill "would easily be Or visit worth about $500,000 and up." Baeder says he's already turned down a $300,000 offer.

18-foot-long sea creature found off Calif. coast LOS ANGELES (AP) — A marine science instructor snorkeling off the Southern California coast spotted something out of a fantasy novel: the silvery carcass of an 18-foot-long, serpent-like oarfish this past month. Jasmine Santana of the Catalina Island Marine Institute needed more than 15 helpers to drag the giant sea creature with eyes the size of half dollars to shore.. Staffers at the institute are calling it the discovery of a lifetime. "We've never seen a fish this big," said Mark Waddington, senior captain of the Tole Mour, CIMI's sail training ship. "The last oarfish we saw was three feet long." Because oarfish dive more than 3,000 feet deep, sightings of the creatures are rare and they are largely unstudied, according to CIMI. The obscure fish apparently died of natural causes. Tissue samples and video footage were sent to be studied by biologists at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Santana spotted something shimmering about 30 feet deep while snorkeling during a staff trip in Toyon Bay at Santa Catalina Island, about two dozen miles from the mainland. "She said, 'I have to drag this thing out of here or nobody will believe me,'" Waddington said. After she dragged the carcass by the tail for more than 75 feet, staffers waded in and helped her bring it to shore. The carcass was on displayfor 5th, 6th, and 7th grade students studying at CIMI. It will be buried in the sand until it decomposes and then its skeleton will be reconstituted for display, Waddington said. The oarfish, which can grow to more than 50 feet, is a deep-water pelagic fish — the longest bony fish in the world, according to CIMI. They are likely responsible for sea serpent legends throughout history.

Marilyn Monroe "Last Sitting" portraits sell at auction NPR - A special edition of Marilyn Monroe photos sold for $41,250 this past month as part of Freeman's Auction, more than four times the $10,000 estimate. The pictures were taken in June 1962 by photographer and portraitist Bert Stern, who was commissioned to shoot the model/actress at the Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles for Vogue magazine. Over the course of three days, he took more than 2,500 photographs -- just six weeks before Monroe's death at age 36. It's no surprise the shoot would later become known as "The Last Sitting." The session featured a mix of fashion, portrait and nude portraits. Some of the photos would later surface in Stern's book, "Marilyn Monroe: The Complete Last Sitting." According to a press release, although it's not hard to find singular photographs from the shoot, it's much less common to see a complete set like the one sold at the latest auction. The auction comes just months after Stern died at his New York City home at age 83.

The Gift Of Life Starts With You
(NAPSI)—Many people believe that organ donation begins and ends by checking the box next to “organ donor” when they sign up for their driver’s license or by signing up online. That’s the most important step and one that more than 100 million people in the U.S. have already taken. But what exactly does it mean once you sign up to be a donor? First, actually becoming a donor doesn’t happen very often. Most often, it happens when a potential donor is in the hospital after a life-threatening accident or illness and on machines that keep blood flowing through the body. While everything possible is done to save that person’s life, there are times when that life cannot be saved. After a person dies and if he or she had previously registered to be a donor, then donation can be a possibility. Even if the deceased had not registered, a family can still agree to allow that loved one to become a donor. And through this unselfish gift, the donor can save up to eight lives by donating organs...and improve up to 50 more by donating corneas and tissues. Time becomes a critical factor after the potential donor has died and authorization for donation has been obtained. First, the hospital contacts its regional organ procurement organization (OPO), which manages the organ recovery process. The OPO searches a national transplant waiting list for people who would be good matches for the donated organs. Matches are based on a number of factors, including blood type, tissue type, body size, how ill the waiting patient is and the distance between the donor’s and patient’s hospitals. Once matches are found, the organs are rushed to the hospitals where the waiting patients receive their lifesaving transplants. Having more people sign up for organ, eye and tissue donation is critical. Right now, more than 117,000 men, women and children are on the national waiting list for organs. Each week, more than 100 of them will die waiting, because the right match was not available. But each of us can make the decision to help others receive a second chance at life. To learn more, visit www.organdonor.gov. While there, you can also register in the state’s donor registry. And make sure to tell your family and friends that you want to be an organ, eye and tissue donor. There are many patients depending on the generosity of people like you.
Michigan: 4.2M walleye stocked LANSING (AP) — The MDNR says 4.16 million pondraised walleye fingerlings have been stocked in 120 water bodies located throughout the state this year. 30 walleye ponds this year and says "most rely heavily on the support of local sportsmen organizations." Eggs are taken from adult walleye from the Muskegon River and Little Bay De Noc. It says the eggs are hatched at Thompson and Wolf Lake state fish hatcheries. 'Bethenny' gives 'Wheel of Fortune' player who lost $1 million chance a luxury trip AP - Paul Atkinson may have lost the chance to win $1 million dollars on "Wheel of Fortune" after mispronouncing the answer to a puzzle, but he's getting quite the consolation prize. Talk-show host Bethenny Frankel invited the contestant and his wife onto her show to discuss his loss, and surprised the couple with a seven-day luxury trip to Antigua. "I think it's great you have such a great attitude," Frankel told the Atkinsons, later adding, "I think your attitude is worth 10 million dollars." Though Atkinson appeared shocked that his answer of "corno curo cabinet" was rejected when he attempted to solve the puzzle after landing on the $1 million wedge on Tuesday, he took the rest of the game in stride, and even joked about about his mispronunciation later. (Not that "Wheel of Fortune" actually denied him the huge prize. The wedge only gave him a shot at the million bucks. He would've had to make it to the bonus round without landing on "bankrupt," then spin that wheel and have it land on the $1 million again, and lastly solve the final puzzle.) His wife Lindsay told Frankel that when he called her and told her what happened, she was't too upset either. "We weren't really expecting that much," she said. "I mean, really, we were like, 'Well, it would be cool if we could pay off the car' or something like that. So we weren't expecting, like, this huge thing to come out of it." But Lindsay did admit that Paul was "so embarrassed."
whatsupmi.com EVERYDAY CHEAPSKATE BY MARY HUNT
EVERYDAY How to Afford Big Ticket Items Finally, you have a couple of months where things are going well. The bills get paid on time and you actually have money left at the end of the month. Then POW! The water heater bursts, the car breaks down and the first half of the property tax bill is past due -- and you're broke. How can you possibly plan or budget for life's bigticket items? Many people believe it just can't be done, that they have no choice but to rely on their credit cards to cover the cost of emergencies -- whether it's something they should have predicted or not. There is a way out: Anticipate these expenses. You know they're coming, so cut the price tag on that big-ticket item into small pieces and make it as routine as paying the phone bill. --Define the goal. The first, most important step is to figure out what your next big money decision will be. Let's say, for example, your refrigerator is slowing down. At 12 years old, you anticipate it has about three years left. Knowing this gives you something valuable: Time. Time to start researching and saving. What style and size do you need? About how much will it cost? Are there options you should consider? Brands you should avoid? Look into it now. --Identify the terms. If you start saving for the refrigerator right now, you'll have about 36 months. Let's say you determine that it'll cost about $1,600. Divide that amount by the term of 36 months. The result is about $44. You'll need to save $44 each month, starting now, so you'll be able to replace your refrigerator in three years. --Make it smaller. Cut your goal into pieces -- smaller payments are psychologically easier to handle. Instead of 36 months, divide the cost of the refrigerator by 156 weeks. Snyder signs legislation on immunization rules LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Gov. Rick Snyder has signed legislation updating the grade at which Michigan students must submit a certificate of immunization to schools. The new laws singed require students to submit the certificate upon entering seventh grade instead of sixth grade. The governor's office says the change will better accommodate the age at which most students receive vaccinations and will allow school districts more time to alert parents about needing vaccinations. It also gives parents and health care providers more time to schedule immunizations. In 2010, vaccinations for tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis as well as meningococcal vaccines were added to the existing Michigan school rules and required for students entering sixth grade if they were at least 11 years of age at the time they entered sixth grade.

Texas man brews beer in his stomach NPR - A 61-year-old Texas man swore he didn’t drink when he came stumbling into the emergency room, but the breathalyzer test the hospital administered told a different story: It read .37, almost five times the legal limit. While some doctors attributed the man’s sudden dizziness and nausea to “closet drinking,” NPR reports that Barabara Cordell, the dean of nursing at Panola College in Carthage, Texas, and Dr. Justin McCarthy, a gastroenterologist in Lubbock, thought differently. Cordell and McCarthy ordered a 24-hour test on the man in which they observed him as he ate carb-enriched food and noticed that his blood alcohol level rose to .12 without any liquid encouragement at all. As it turns out, the Texas man had an infection that caused “Auto-Brewery Syndrome,” which was the result of brewer’s yeast in the subject’s gut causing his body to take any food heavy in starch, like pasta or bagels, and turn the food’s sugars into ethanol. Cases like these are rare with and date all the way back to 1970s Japan, according to NPR.

Man arrested for 3rd DWI after telling deputy his dog ate his seat belt THIBODAUX, LA – A 27-year-old man was arrested for his third DWI after he was pulled over for not wearing his seat belt. When the deputy asked him why he wasn’t wearing it, he replied “my dog ate it.” The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that the incident happened on shortly before 6:00 p.m. The deputy conducted the traffic stop on a vehicle being driven by Zachary Ordoyne of Thibodaux. “While speaking to Ordoyne, deputies detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage, and Ordoyne’s speech was slurred,” Deputy Brennan Matherne, Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, said. “He admitted to consuming alcoholic beverages and showed deputies a half-full bottle of an alcoholic beverage in his vehicle.” Ordonyne allegedly performed poorly on a field sobriety test. He later submitted to a breathalyzer test, which showed him to have a blood alcohol level of .104 percent. Ordonyne was arrested and charged with DWI (3rd offense), Possession of an Alcoholic Beverage in a Motor Vehicle, and not wearing his seat belt. He was booked into the Lafourche Parish Detention Center. His bond was set at $50,150.
New from Hershey: soft caramels
Associated Press NEW YORK – Chew this. The Hershey Co. is launching a new candy brand, its first new brand in 30 years, a soft caramel creme line called Lancaster. And for the first time it is taking a double barreled approach, debuting the candy in the U.S. and China at once. The move comes as China increasingly becomes a focus for U.S.-based consumer goods companies that are seeking to offset slower growth in developed markets like North America. Hershey, which makes candy such as Kit Kat, Twizzlers and Hershey's Kisses, said its most recent quarter that new products in both the U.S. and overseas helped its net income rise 18 percent. "China and the U.S. are major focus markets for the company," said Steven Schiller, senior vice president of sweets and refreshment. China is the second largest sweets market behind the U.S., he added. The Lancaster name stems from founder Milton Hershey's first candy company, The Lancaster Caramel Co. founded in 1886. And the candy comes after two-and-a-half years of research into consumer tastes and the global confectionary market. A category the company calls "comforting richness" — caramel or milk-based soft candy — was under tapped, Hershey found, even though at $1.5 billion dollars it was big business in China. Caramel is also a fast-growing category globally, Schiller said, growing faster than chocolate and other non-chocolate candies. "It is one of the fastest growing segments in the food industry," Schiller said. So Hershey developed caramels that could fit into the niche. The products in each country aren't completely the same, but tailored to their markets. In the U.S., Lancaster caramel's will come in three flavors: caramel, vanilla and caramel, and vanilla and raspberry. In China, where the company already sells Hershey's Kisses, Hershey and Ice Breakers, the candies will be more similar to milk-based candies that are popular in that country. The target demographic is men and women in their twenties and early thirties. The candy will hit store shelves in January 2014 and come in two sizes for about $4 and $2.50. In China, it has already launched in three cities, with wider distribution set for 2014.

Lake Superior November 10, 1975 http://www.shipwreckmuseum.com - The legend of the Edmund Fitzgerald remains the most mysterious and controversial of all shipwreck tales heard around the Great Lakes. Her story is surpassed in books, film and media only by that of the Titanic. Canadian folksinger Gordon Lightfoot inspired popular interest in this vessel with his 1976 ballad, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald." The Edmund Fitzgerald was lost with her entire crew of 29 men on Lake Superior November 10, 1975, 17 miles northnorthwest of Whitefish Point, Michigan. Whitefish Point is the site of the Whitefish Point Light Station and Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. The Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society (GLSHS) has conducted three underwater expeditions to the wreck, 1989, 1994, and 1995. At the request of family members surviving her crew, Fitzgerald's 200 lb. bronze bell was recovered by the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society on July 4, 1995. This expedition was conducted jointly with the National Geographic Society, Canadian Navy, Sony Corporation, and Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. The bell is now on display in the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum as a memorial to her lost crew.
When It Comes to Preventing the Flu: Don’t Wait to Vaccinate (NewsUSA) - When flu season comes around every year, it’s important to make sure you’re protected. Flu seasons are unpredictable and can be severe. An average of 5 to 20 percent of the U.S. population becomes ill with the flu each year, and more than 200,000 of these individuals are hospitalized due to complications. The flu can be especially serious for children. Each year, an average of 20,000 children under age five are hospitalized as a result of flu complications. Children ages two to 17 are twice as likely to get the flu as adults. Such setbacks resulting from the flu can affect a family’s life, but there are steps you can take to help prevent the flu. Through the “Don’t Wait to Vaccinate” campaign, soccer legend and mom Brandi Chastain encourages families to keep these four tips in mind: * Get an annual flu vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends everyone six months and older should get a flu vaccine each year as it is the single best way to help prevent the flu. * Don’t wait. Every year, it is important to get yourself and your family vaccinated as soon as vaccine is available in your community, which can be as early as August. * Know your options. It’s important to remember the flu vaccine comes in two forms — the shot or nasal spray. Talk to your doctor about which type is right for you and your eligible family members. * Practice good health habits. Taking everyday preventive steps, like staying away from sick people and washing your hands, helps reduce the spread of germs. If you are sick with the flu, stay home from work or school to prevent spreading influenza to others. “Flu viruses are constantly changing, and the strains that circulate from season to season may be different,” according to Anat Feingold, MD, a leading influenza expert and division head of pediatric infectious disease at the Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, New Jersey. “Because of this, flu vaccines are updated from one season to the next, which is why the CDC recommends getting vaccinated every year.” Additionally, a person’s immune protection from vaccination declines over time, so annual vaccination helps provide optimal protection.

Burglary Suspect Falls Through Ceiling in Calif. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A burglar who tried to break into an ATM at a bank in San Francisco was arrested after he hopped onto the roof of a nearby building to escape and fell into an apartment, police said. "There was a hole in the roof where he fell through just as we were ordering him to put his hands up," police Sgt. Wilfred Williams told reporters. "I've responded to several different silent alarm calls at banks, but this is the first time when someone fell through a roof." The suspect, whose name was not released, was not seriously injured. Police said he weighed 230 pounds. Police said he had tried to use a crowbar to break into the ATM inside a Bank of America branch in the Portola neighborhood around 3:45 a.m. The man apparently got into the bank through a ventilation shaft, which triggered a silent alarm. He was spotted by officers as he fled, police Chief Greg Suhr told KPIX-TV. Officers notified the K9 unit after realizing the burglar had fled onto the roof. A Fire Department ladder truck was called in as part of the search. The suspect was spotted on the roof. As he was trying to surrender, he fell into the apartment. Police said no money had been taken.

Kenny Rogers reflects on long shadow of his legacy NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Kenny Rogers still records and performs - when the mood strikes him - but he's glad he no longer lives the life of a pop star. "I wouldn't be out there today if you paid me," he joked. Rogers long ago cemented his legacy in the world of popular music, and there will be another reminder of this when he's finally inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame on Sunday with Bobby Bare and the late "Cowboy" Jack Clement. Many believe Rogers' induction is years late since few have done as much to spread country music beyond its once rural borders. Rogers is remembered for "The Gambler" and other country hits like "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town," but the 75-year-old repeatedly strayed into pop music over the years. Now country is more pop - and popular - than ever, and Rogers had a lot to do with that. "When I came in it was Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard, and then all of a sudden I did "Through the Years" and "She Believes in Me," started working with Lionel Richie and did "Lady" and started working with Barry Gibb and did "Islands in the Stream," and as successful as they were, they weren't what those people thought country music was. I think now they look around and say, `Whoa, he was a lot more country than we thought.'"

Tiny reptile keeps 370 on the ground AUSTRALIA -An 8-inch mandarin rat snake that stowed aboard a jet from Asia was found in the passenger cabin of a Qantas Boeing 747, leading to 370 passengers being grounded in Sydney, Australia, overnight. Qantas said the jet would be fumigated before returning to service. The mildly venomous Asian snake was about the width of a pencil and thus no match for the last Qantas hanger-on: a 10-foot python on a wing in January.

CLASSIC
LANDERS
Dear Ann Landers: I am concerned about the advice you gave "Befuddled," the teenager who was afraid her girlfriend, "Lottie," might be a lesbian because she slept in the nude when they shared a bed. You told her to continue the friendship but not to accept any more invitations to sleep over. Your response left me with a sinking feeling. When friends are uneasy about something like this, it is not OK to ignore it. Also, a friendship that is not based on trust can be hollow at best. As a woman who works with lesbian and gay young people, I find it highly unlikely that Lottie is a lesbian. If such were the case, she would not have risked a negative reaction from her friend. Rejection from those they care about is one of the principal concerns of gay youth. All teenagers, gay and straight, should be encouraged to be honest with their peers and not engage in deception. If the writer has worries and does not deal with them directly, the friendship will suffer. Please let her know that being gay is not the issue. The real issue is empowering young people to be forthright and vocal with each other about situations that make them uncomfortable. Staying silent accomplishes nothing and leaves them frustrated and confused. -- C.M. in the Southwest Dear C.M.: I had several complaints about my response to that letter and am inclined to think my answer was a dog. Your last sentence is a far better response. Thanks for cleaning up after me. Dear Ann Landers: This is about the overweight woman who was flying to California. She may not need to pay for an extra seat if she flies during non-busy hours. If she had a vacant seat next to her and an arm rest that lifts up, it would be an ideal set-up. An aisle seat is usually best, and many have arm rests that also lift up. Some larger people prefer the bulkhead seat for the extra room, but the food trays can be uncomfortable. Also, the woman should try to board first so she doesn't get in anybody else's way. And please tell her she can ask the flight attendant for a seat-belt extender. Many travelers aren't even aware that there are such things. Just wanted to pass along a few additional suggestions, Ann. -- Been There in New Hampshire Dear New Hampshire: Thank you for giving my overweight readers some tips on how to avoid possible problems and fly in comfort. Restoring and Seasoning Rusty Cast Iron
www.motherearthnews.com By Sarah C. - There are a few tools that every cook should have in their kitchen - a great seat of knives, a heavy-duty stand mixer, a food processor, stainless steel nesting mixing bowls, a Dutch oven, and a cast iron skillet. Cast iron is one of those things that people either LOVE, or it scares the beejesus out of them because they don't understand it. The reasons against cast iron are that: 1. "it rusts" 2. "it’s heavy" 3. "I don't know how to use it." Once you cook with a well-seasoned cast iron skillet, all of the above reasons just fall away. The problem for most people lies with the “well-seasoned” part. Unless you have a granny ready to hand down some cast iron to you, you’re likely going to have to do some of the seasoning yourself. And what is better way to reduce resources, save money, and preserve a well-loved tradition, than to purchase cast iron at a thrift store or garage sale. Much of what is available out there is pretty rusty and damaged. Follow these simple steps, and you will soon be cooking on a well-seasoned piece of history. 1. Clean the skillet with soap and water. In my humble opinion, this is one of the last times your skillet should need soap. 2. Then put it in a 300 degree Fahrenheit oven for about 10 minutes. 3. Remove from the oven and pour a puddle of oil (I used olive, but any kind will work) and a generously helping of kosher salt in to the center. 4. Using a rag you don't mind getting dirty, paper towels, a very stiff scrub brush, or pieces of newspaper, work the oil and salt in to all parts of the skillet. Pay special attention to the rusty areas.cleaning cast iron 5. Then, rinse off the skillet, and put back in to the oven until it is mostly dry. 6. Put it on the stovetop on medium heat with another puddle of your oil of choice and work it around with another rag. I used a pastry brush. Let it heat and "cure" on the burner for about 5 minutes. Careful, the oil will be hot! 7. Pour the oil off, and put just a dab of high-heat oil in the skillet. Some people prefer vegetable oil for this part. I'm not a veggie oil fan - including canola - so I used a dab of bacon grease. Let the oil melt/get hot, and then work it around to cover the entire surface of the skillet. Then, using a paper towel or piece of newspaper and remove all excess oil from the pan. Bake for 90 minutes at 300 degrees. 8. Then, everything from step 7, and bake for another 90 minutes at 300 degrees. Seasoned cast iron - You can keep adding oil and baking as many times as you want. After two times, this skillet was ready for its big debut in my kitchen. It made perfect eggs the next day. A quick and final note on cast iron. No matter how much seasoning you give it, you'll always need a pinch of fat (butter, oil, shortening, etc.) in a hot pan prior to adding food to it. Officials confirm cases of influenza in Michigan LANSING, Mich. (AP) — State health officials have confirmed the first cases of influenza in Michigan during the 20132014 flu season and are encouraging people to get flu shots. According to the Michigan Department of Community Health, the four cases of the contagious respiratory illness are the first identified by a state lab this flu season. "Each year, we expect the first influenza cases to appear in the fall and this year has proven to be no different," James K. Haveman, director of the MDCH, said in a statement Wednesday. "We continue to encourage all Michigan citizens to get vaccinated as it is the single best way to prevent the flu." The department said the illnesses occurred in children and adults from two southeast Michigan counties. Three of the cases have been confirmed as influenza A (H1N1) 2009 viruses and one has been confirmed as being an influenza A (H3N2) virus. According to Michigan health officials, it's too early to tell what influenza viruses will circulate or how severe the influenza season may be. Michigan's flu activity will be reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as "sporadic." That's the second lowest of five categories the federal government tracks. Nationally, a mix of sporadic influenza viruses has been detected during the past month.
The $142,000 Pickup: Truck With 1.3 Miles Tops Vintage Car Auction
Bill Chappell NPR - A car auction unlike any other took place in Pierce, Neb., where hundreds of cars that were stockpiled by a Chevrolet dealer are finally being sold — many for the first time. The Lambrecht Chevrolet collection stretches back to the 1950s and has drawn bids and interest from around the world. "Thousands of people — ranging from serious bidders to barbecue eaters — are pouring into this rural county seat town of nearly 1,800 people" to bid on cars, or just to see what the fuss is about. The vehicles include trucks, sedans, and sports cars — some of them with only a couple of miles on their odometer. They're a mix of models that never sold and trade-ins that the dealership's owner, Ray Lambrecht, decided not to sell. About 25 were stored indoors; others were left to face the elements in a field near the Lambrecht family's home. More than ten thousand people have descended on Pierce (pop. 1,700), poking around in that field to check out "survivor" cars that are being called a time capsule of U.S. automotive history. "Finding cars in this condition is unheard of. It's the holy grail for collectors," Ryan Robertson earlier this month. "Some cars still have the plastic on the seats and the price sticker on the window. The old Impala would have sold for about $3,000 in 1964. It could now be worth 40 times that." The auction has been tracked by television's Top Gear show and the History Channel. Here are the four vehicles that fetched the highest prices: 1958 Chevrolet Cameo pickup truck with 1.3 miles: $140,000 1963 Chevrolet Impala with 11 miles: $97,500 1978 Corvette Indy pace car with 4 miles: $80,000 1958 Chevrolet Apache 31 Series Pickup (5 miles): $80,000 Almost all of those vehicles come with their original paperwork and a new Nebraska title and bill of sale. The Cameo pickup's transmission is a "three on the tree," with its shifter located on the steering column. For long-time Pierce residents like Lyle Ven teicher, the auction brought back memories of the thrill of seeing new models of cars hit the showroom. "Several of us guys would walk the four or five blocks from the high school to the dealership during our lunch hour to check out the new Chevys," he tells . "My grandpa had a light blue '64 Impala. I thought it was the prettiest car ever built."
Cat survives 11-story fall JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - A house cat in Alaska learned the hard way not to chase mosquitoes after following one out a window and falling 11 stories. The 2-year-old cat, named Wasabi, survived but suffered a fractured leg and broken bones. The Juneau Empire reports the cat was chasing the mosquito Monday in her owners' apartment in Juneau, about two blocks from the state Capitol. A mosquito escaped out a window, and Wasabi went after it. Stephanie Gustafson says her mother watched the female cat fall. Wasabi landed in a parking lot, and Gustafson found her huddled nearby, bloody and wet from rain. The cat underwent an operation, and has pins and wires holding together her fractured leg and broken bones in a joint. She also is sporting a pink cast. Gustafson says Wasabi is expected to heal in about six weeks.

Natural Remedies for Nasal Congestion, Sore Throat and Aching Muscles http://www.motherearthliving.com By Susan Melgren, Web Editor I was home sick this week with a stuffy nose, sore throat and aching muscles—all the symptoms of a cold or flu. So what does a natural health blogger do when she’s sick? Research the effectiveness of natural flu and cold remedies, of course! Nasal Congestion Steam tent If you're having trouble breathing because your nose is clogged, cover your head and a bowl of hot water with a towel and inhale the steam. The moisture will move the mucus along, helping you to breathe again. Wanting maximum relief, I opted for the "steam tent". For this remedy, boil a pot of water on the stove. When steam starts to rise, drape a towel over your head, lean over the pot and inhale. The towel should trap the steam in. Naturally, make sure to keep your face at a safe distance from the pot so as not to scald your skin. Although I felt somewhat silly bowed over the stove with a towel draped over my head, I found this remedy effective. While my nose wasn't completely cleared, my breathing was almost normal after the steam tent! Sore Throat Once I could breathe again, I turned my attention to my sore throat. A quick Internet search found a variety of remedies and cure-alls for this ailment, from drinking a cup of tea to gargling with salt water to sipping on a hot toddy. Lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, honey and cayenne pepper tea: Among all the natural remedies I turned up for a sore throat, these four items appeared the most. The acidity in lemon juice and apple cider vinegar kills bacteria, honey soothes and heals, and cayenne pepper is a pain killer and healing aid. I felt overwhelmed with the multiple possibilities of mixing these ingredients, so I started with a tea recipe that called for all four: 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar, 1 teaspoon of honey, juice from a fourth of a lemon and a dash of cayenne pepper mixed well in a cup of hot water. Although it sounds disgusting, the ingredients were in such minimal amounts that they didn’t overwhelm my palette (or gag reflex). However, because the ingredients were in such minimal form, I found the pain relief to be minimal as well. Tea with honey and lemon To ease the pain of a sore throat, add lemon juice, honey and apple cider vinegar to a cup of tea. Cayenne pepper gargle: My throat felt slightly less sore after the tea, so—with a little bit of new-found faith in the ingredients—I tried a different approach: the cayenne pepper gargle. To make the gargle, I mixed about half a glass of warm water with half a teaspoon of cayenne pepper. I gargled with the mixture a few times. After gargling, my mouth felt on fire—but my throat felt much better! Aching Muscles Ginger bath: With my nose and throat feeling better, I turned to my final complaint—my aching body. To soothe my muscles, I shaved about four tablespoons of a fresh ginger root, placed them in a cloth bag and let hot water run over them while I drew a bath. Ginger’s warming properties increase circulation and help muscles to relax. The ginger bath relaxed my whole body and let me get a few hours of desperately need sleep.

Back on this day Nov 22, 1988: Stealth bomber unveiled history.com - In the presence of members of Congress and the media, the Northrop B-2 "stealth" bomber is shown publicly for the first time at Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, California. The aircraft, which was developed in great secrecy for nearly a decade, was designed with stealth characteristics that would allow it to penetrate an enemy's most sophisticated defenses unnoticed. At the time of its public unveiling, the B-2 had not even been flown on a test flight. It rapidly came under fire for its massive cost--more than $40 billion for development and a $1 billion price tag for each unit. In 1989, the B-2 was successfully flown, performing favorably. Although the aircraft had a wingspan of nearly half a football field, its radar signal was as negligible as that of a bird. The B-2 also successfully evaded infrared, sound detectors, and the visible eye.
