Training and Problem Solving 2 Abstract The effect of cognitive training on an everyday problem solving measure was assessed in 315 participants (64 – 96 years) who participated in the 1998 Seattle Longitudinal Training Study. The everyday problem solving measure utilized in this study was the Everyday Problems Test (EPT), which assesses problem solving skills associated with instrumental activities of daily living. Participants were trained on either Inductive Reasoning or Spatial Orientation Ability based on their prior cognitive status. Of those trained in 1998, 65 participants were first trained in 1984 and 85 were first trained in 1991; the remaining 165 participants were first trained in 1998. Those initially trained in 1984 or 1991 received booster training in 1998. To investigate training effects on everyday problem solving ability, a 3-year (initial train in 1984, 1991, 1998) x 2 training group (space, reason) x 2 occasion (pre-test, posttest) ANCOVA was employed. Age in 1998 was included as a covariate. Results indicated that there was a significant main effect for age (p
