WHO WE ARE : The Carlos Oliveira Soccer Academy (COSA) has been operating in New York City since 1999. Directed by its founder, Mr. Carlos Oliveira a former professional soccer player in Brazil with Santos F.C. and many other clubs, he is also a professional soccer coach now with coaching experiences in Brazil, Mexico, Japan, Bolivia and Finland. The soccer academy utilizes highly trained soccer coaches from Brazil, Latin America and the US who work with children at their developmental level. COSA’s programs have grown from a summer camp in Riverside Park to be a year round program operating both indoors and out doors on the Upper West side and Lower East side serving several thousands of kids from ages 2 1/2 to 18 each year. COSA aims to expand its programs and to use its full potential. Besides COSA’s winter, spring, fall and summer programs, COSA is expanding into serving the school system by providing the Brazilian soccer system training in New York City schools during recess and after school activities. The After-school program operates within the same structure of the COSA Recess Soccer Program described above. COSA coaches apply the same methodology with the students for one hour and fifteen minutes during the after-school hours. This involves warm-up and skills practice, such as, dribbling, passing and trapping through fun games; play-making and field sense skills. The after school sessions start at school hours within the school premises. However, if the school has limited space, COSA aims to provide transportation to a different location where the classes can take place.
Project Overview The Carlos Oliveira Soccer Academy (COSA) Soccer Recess and After School Programs is a soccer training program for children grades Pre-k--12 which takes place during school’s recess time, after school and summer and winter indoor programs. Our soccer programs provide an engaging and positive experience that incorporates structured soccer skills building activities in combination with fun games. It is a pilot project of Carlos Oliveira Soccer Academy that was founded in New York in 1999.
The COSA Soccer Program works to develop children’s soccer skills through age appropriate activities. These include: 1. Team play; 2. Practice dribbling, passing and trapping through fun games; 3. Play-making and field sense skills. Through the COSA Soccer Programs students learn the fun Brazilian soccer system made famous by such soccer luminaries as Pele, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo to name a few. The recess Soccer program is an alternative activity that students can engage in during recess, which provides extra physical activity for students while promoting positive interaction during recess under the guidance of the COSA instructors as well for all the other programs we also offer like, after school, school vacation, summer and winter programs. The Carlos Oliveira Soccer Academy (COSA), founded in 1999, is a pioneer Brazilianstyle soccer training in the United States. Its soccer training during the winter, spring, fall and summer programs for children ages 2 1/2 to 18 are designed to instruct boys and girls in individual skills, and tactics as well as the fundamentals of team play through developmentally (age and skill) appropriate training instruction taught by highly trained coaches.
Mission The COSA Soccer Program aims to provide a more inclusive and peaceful way to promote physical activity through soccer. Vision · · · · ·
Inspire students interest and knowledge in soccer Motivate students to be physically active Promote positive interaction among students Improve group respect and discipline environment Provide social support for students
Soccer Program Goals 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Promote health and well-being of students Promote inclusive games through soccer Encourage students to get the most playing time Promote organizing and social skills. Increase students physical coordination and agility
Statement of Need Many studies have shown that students have become less physically active and there is a significant increase of aimless wondering. At the same time it can be a lonely experience for some students due to difficult interaction with other peers or a very frustrating one for others due unnecessary fights and arguments with peers. Additionally, the existing lack of organization and resources during recess often lead to students’ idleness and a recess period without purpose. As a result, students fall into the old pattern of boys-chasing-girls and vice versa. Target Participants The COSA Soccer programs are available for all age groups that wishes to participate and be part of our academy. The program is structured to engage small groups of all ages for five days per week. Group size will be limited depending upon playground yard size, field or gym size. Students are encouraged to sign up for one day of the week, which becomes his/her soccer day for the entire year. Staff One to five coaches (TBD), depending on group size will work with two or more groups of students. They will be instructing fundamental skills of soccer (dribbling, passing and trapping) through fun age appropriate games and then organizing students in team games. Target Outcomes Soccer Program will: 1. Increase team work efforts 2. Increase physical coordination 3. Promote positive behavior 4. Promote discipline
