Abstract. To assessthe capabilityof Global PositioningSystem(GPS) phase measurementsfor the determinationof transientvelocity,we have made measurements with a GPS antennaon a movingplatform. The antennawas translatedin the horizontal

planeat a constant velocityof t mmh-• for a periodof somewhat morethan24 hours while GPS data were recorded simultaneously.Other stationaryantennasat distancesof t0 m to -1000 km were also simultaneouslyrecordingGPS data. We calculatedan averagevelocityof the movingantennaby modelingits time-dependentpositionas a randomwalk and fitting a straightline to the stochasticestimates. We have found that the accuracyof the resultingvelocityestimatesis dependenton the observingperiod and the baselinelength. For 24-hourdata time spans, rmshorizontalvelocityerrorswere lessthan 0.2

mmh-• forallbaseline lengths; forsimilar timespans, rmsvertical velocity errors were0.30.9 mm for lengthsbetween tOOand 1000 km, and •> 1, then we will have a weakly constrained itly assuminga rectilineartrajectoryfor its motion and ignoring solution and will allow for estimated variations in ax and v the correlationsbetweenthe estimatesof position.(If the ve- whichare muchgreaterthan the true variations. If sc
