This week in Diversity in 1994 Today of the 2.5 million in incarceration, more than half the nation’s prisoners are African American, even though African Americans make up only 13 percent of the overall U.S. population. This racial imbalance is also present as 42 percent of the prisoners on death row are African American. Sentencing practices are often identified as one of the sources of this imbalance.
