Broadway’s close connection with the arts stretches back over 130 years to the famous Broadway Colony of artists - the group of painters, musicians and writers, most notably John Singer Sargent - who came to the village and found inspiration for their creativity. Broadway remains a destination for art-lovers and an inspiration for artists to this day

Visit www.broadwayartsfestival.com/events to book online or from the ticket office from 25th May.

The Festival also looks to the future and as a registered charity makes financial grants to young arts students from the local area. They, in turn, have been generous in their support of the Festival. Hopefully, they will also play their part in carrying forward Broadway’s rich artistic heritage and its place as a vibrant centre for the creative arts. John Kiszely Chairman of Trustees The Broadway Arts Festival Trust

The biennial Broadway Arts Festival, founded in 2010, now attracts attendance and participation from far and wide. As it has grown, so has the task of organising it, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Karen Bloch and her management committee for all their hard work and skill in producing this year’s exciting programme. I would also like to thank our sponsors, benefactors and friends for their generosity.

The biennial Broadway Arts Festival is proud to present its fifth and what promises to be its best programme yet. Eminent speakers include Andrew Graham-Dixon, Sir Roy Strong, John Julius Norwich, Tristram Hunt and Lachlan Goudie. Music lovers will be entertained by the popular Trio Severn and international jazz star Ben Powell. There are two high quality art exhibitions: the premiere of a special World War One Art Exhibition and the increasingly prestigious Open Art Competition. But increasingly the Broadway Arts Festival has developed into an opportunity for wider participation and creativity. Building on the success of the previous programme of art and craft workshops, we are running an even larger number of these events in an extensive range of media aimed at every age and ability. We are repeating the hugely popular choral workshop and performance, this time featuring Mozart`s Requiem. An extensive free schools programme provides the opportunity for participation and creativity for Broadway`s children. The Great Broadway Paint-Off is a new event for artists of all ages to paint with professional artists. Whether you come to the Festival to watch and listen or to participate, we are sure that you will be inspired and stimulated. You will certainly be most welcome! Art of The Great War 1914 – 1918

The Broadway Colony Room

Born in 1932, John Noott well remembers talk of the Great War as the country was busy preparing itself for the Second World War. These were formative events in a young life and proved to be foundational for a later passion that has seen John gather together an important collection of war art during his 50 years as an art dealer.

A permanent exhibition about the world-famous Broadway Colony, of renowned artists, writers, musicians and actors, most notably John Singer Sargent, has now been permanently installed in a dedicated room of the Broadway Museum and Art Gallery on behalf of the Broadway Arts Festival.

Showing the humour as well as the horror, on the front line and the home front, this exhibition is a curated mix of original art and prints, by both official war artists and amateurs. In a time when the last surviving veterans are no longer with us, it offers us a fascinating first-hand insight into one of the most significant events in modern world history.

Venue: Broadway Museum & Art Gallery Admission prices: £5, £10 per family

This important piece of Broadway heritage recounts the interestingly interwoven lives of those who came to live, work and play together here in the late 19th and early 20th century. Written and curated by Karen Bloch, this fascinating story is told in a beautifully illustrated and highly informative display. Venue: Broadway Museum & Art Gallery. Experimental Watercolour: Demonstration with Ann Blockley

‘Going Wild in Watercolour!’: Demonstration with Jake Winkle

Ann’s demonstration will be based on the projects described in her new book ‘Ann Blockley’s Watercolour Workshop’ published by Pavilion books on March 1 2018. She will be creating a new interpretation of one of the pictures in the book using a combination of different water-based mediums to demonstrate ways of creating loose, expressive marks and textures with a range of unusual techniques .

Jake paints watercolour with passion and expression, capturing the essence of his subject with fabulous colour and dynamic brush strokes. He practises watercolour at its most uncluttered and with apparent simplicity brings his paintings to life... each picture telling a story! Come and be lured into the wonderful opportunities of this exquisite medium.

Situated at the heart of the Festival, this exciting new strand showcases the work of some of Britain's top artists, designers and artisans. Watch printmakers, sculptors, ceramicists, designer-makers and a host of traditional artisans demonstrating their skills. Talk to them, learn about their creative processes and buy work direct.
