the kick off A warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of League Cup winners Dungannon Swifts to the Loughshore Hotel Arena for this evening's Danske Bank Premiership match. Our visitors’ tremendous victory over Ballymena in the League Cup Final was met with almost universal acclaim, and I would like to add my congratulations to that. The silverware is reward for a club that has established itself in the Premiership, strengthened steadily year on year, and deserved to see that progress manifest itself with a first Senior trophy. In this paragraph, I could almost just paste in the same comments as many previous ones. Against Glenavon we matched the Lurgan Blues for much of the game, but we’re on the wrong end of a crucial refereeing decision that ultimately contributed to losing. I appreciate that the officials have a tough job, not helped by the antics some players deploy to gain an advantage, but there have been more howlers this season than I can remember in any previous campaign. Or maybe it is just that I can now

“It’s looking increasingly like a two horse race to avoid automatic relegation to Championship1”

review these incidents on TV or the internet. Either way, I have seen penalties awarded that clearly were not, others not awarded that were stonewallers, and don’t start me on Aaron Smyth's red card a few months back (and the subsequent three match ban that, unlike another red card around the same time in a more high-profile game, was not rescinded). Big, big decisions that make the difference, come the business end of the season. With the League split now just three games away after today, it’s looking increasingly like a two-horse race to avoid automatic relegation to Championship1. We are four points ahead of Ballinamallard, but seven behind Warrenpoint. The rest of the teams are now well out of it. Realistically, we need to pick up at least twelve points to have any chance of catching the Point, and probably six to keep the Ducks at bay: that’s assuming both of those sides don’t suddenly find a run of form themselves. When you break it down, our results against those two teams have cost us dear. Ballinamallard have won just 2 league games out of twenty-nine, one of them against us. Warrenpoint have accumulated twenty-one points, a third of those from us. Six key matches where we have fallen short. Just four points from a possible eighteen. Big chance, post-split, to put that right, as I think our squad is much improved during the transfer window.

Enjoy the game and have a safe journey home.

mcalinden’s comments We now find ourselves with 9 League games left in what has been a very challenging season so far. I won’t focus on the past games as we can no longer influence them, except to say that if we can learn from certain mistakes we will be miles better off in terms of points. I listened this week to a podcast hosted by Joey Barton, featuring Sean Dyche and they discussed reasons for outcomes of results and situations and as they put it, “No one really gives a …..” what the reasons are, it’s simply the end result that matters. We have never focused on trying to make excuses for anything and that won’t start now. We will stick together and give everything to fight against relegation. The work on the training ground has

www.carrickrangers.co.uk

been very good and to a degree we have been pleased with recent performances, but we must start to turn those into results. In fact, results are all that matters so if we play poorly but give every ounce of sweat and effort we can and win games that won’t displease me one bit. I completely understand the frustration, disappointment and at times anger towards results, I feel it with everyone and so do the staff and the players. We are all aware of what’s at stake and pride ourselves on getting the job done in the next 2 months. I believe we can win this fight. I hope and trust we are all united and together. I appreciate all the support and backing, I will repay that. Bounce Bounce…

captain’s corner Welcome to tonight’s game. Another close call on Saturday but close isn’t good enough at this time of the season. Close is something we have come too often this season and there’s no doubt our inability to convert close calls has really put us under pressure. It would be easy to down tools and accept that we need luck and that there’s nothing we can do about our position in the league. It would be easy for fans to turn their backs and say, “I’m not going back to watch the same close calls every week!” But that’s not what’s kept us in the league the past two seasons. To coin a phrase from an old manager, “it’s time to circle the wagons”. In other words, it’s time to pull together and fight our way out of the mess we are in. As I mentioned last week, we are more than

4

capable of doing this, believe it or not. I know the players and management are working harder to achieve safety and I know the fans are too loyal to turn their backs on what is THEIR team, THEIR community, THEIR club! Tonight’s opponents have the ability to beat anyone on their day and their football can be a joy to onlookers but they’re a team we have had positive results against. The players will keep on battling, you can be sure of this! Keep the belief, right until it’s impossible. This is what has made the impossible possible before and can make the unlikely a reality again. Enjoy the game. Amber Army!

view from the board A good evening to you all. On behalf of the Directors, I would like to extend a special welcome to the officials, players and supporters of Dungannon Swifts Football Club to the Loughshore Hotel Arena for this evening’s re-arranged Danske Bank Premiership match. First, congratulations to The Swifts for their terrific BetMcLean League Cup victory over holders Ballymena Utd earlier this month, winning their first senior trophy in a 3-1 win. Our previous home fixture back in October, our last home league win, saw us winning 2-1 but our poor performance in the reverse fixture back in November resulted in a 0-4 defeat. Since that match, Dungannon’s league form has dipped, having only three wins from their last 11 games to date. Top scorers Ryan Mayse and Ryan Harpur are the ones to watch and we expect a tight game this evening against Rodney McAree’s side. We have now lost 2-1 in our last three home games and we must put that right tonight with a positive result as our next three games are against top six opposition before the split. The onus is on us to get ourselves in a position where we are not reliant on having to win all our split matches creating added pressure on ourselves to lift us clear of the bottom two positions. Hard work ahead, but I believe with our current squad of new and old faces, in a consistent line up and continuing the work rate shown in recent weeks, we can do it. The Academy have recently launched a 2013 age group with a registration evening set for tomorrow night from 6.30 to 7.30pm in the Dugout. Demand for places is expected to be high so please get yourself along early if you want further information. There is still time to register 2011 (6-a-side) and 2012 (5-a-

www.carrickrangers.co.uk

side) groups for the Summer SSG programme to be held on Saturday mornings from 19th May on the 3G pitch. Contact Paul McIlwaine if you know of any teams interested. The U20’s league matches in February to date have seen an upturn in form with a 5 -0 win against Warrenpoint, a 3-4 defeat against Ards and a 2-1 win against Ballinamallard. There are nine home games scheduled for March and April, so come along and give your support. Players’ shirt sponsorships are still available – both home and away, including all new signings; contact Andy Sloan for details. We encourage you, the supporters, to help spread the word on the various sponsorship deals at the club and if you know of any local businesses or individuals that would be interested in putting an advert in the matchday programme or availing of perimeter advertising or sponsoring a matchday/ matchball, please ask them to contact any board or Supporters Club members. We are indebted to all our main sponsors and, as always, thank them for their valuable support. Fixture News: Our next league match will be away to Linfield on Saturday 10th March, 3.00pm and then home to Cliftonville on Saturday 17th March, 3.00pm. We ask for as many of you as possible to attend and support the lads. Please continue to check the website for confirmation of fixtures and times. Enjoy the game and let’s get behind the team this evening. We thank you for your continued support and have a safe journey home. Gary Coppin CRFC Director

last time out A late penalty saw Carrick Rangers fall to at third consecutive 2-1 defeat against 10-man Glenavon. Midfielder Bobby Burns had the first opportunity of the afternoon as he tried his luck with a free-kick from 20 yards out, however Harry Doherty was equal to his effort as he gathered comfortably. Young Burns then blazed over the top, before Joel Cooper did the same with his shot. Gary Hamilton’s men kept on the front foot as Andrew Hall’s corner-kick floated all the way to the back post where Stephen Murray side-footed the ball towards goal, beating Doherty but going past the post. Substitute Eric Foley had the final chance for the away side in the first half, but he wasted it as his free-kick sailed over the bar. Two minutes into the second half, the ‘Gers took the lead. A long punt up the pitch from Doherty caught the Glenavon defence sleeping as Darren Henderson latched onto the ball to poke past the onrushing Jonathan Tuffey. However, Rangers’ lead lasted only four minutes. Burns’ corner from the right picked out the unmarked Rhys Marshall to nod into the net from close range and draw his side level. As the game approached the hour mark, Keith Kennedy reduced the Lurgan Blues to 10 men as he produced

10

a second yellow card for Cooper following a foul on Daniel Larmour. Looking to capitalise on their numerical advantage, a Carrick substitution saw Andrew Mooney replace Ryan Nimick. Foley then drew a great save from Doherty as his low free-kick was pushed past the post. Ten minutes from time, the Mourneview Park outfit were awarded a penalty. Hall’s throw-in from the right found Andrew Mitchell just inside the area who softly fell under Ralph Kottoy’s presence, with Keith Kennedy not hesitating to point to the spot. Andrew McGrory stepped up to the mark and hammered the ball home to send his side in front. The ‘Gers made a late change as Eamon Scannell came on for Mark Edgar, but it wasn’t enough to change a disappointing outcome in what was a positive display from the hosts. Ryan Clarke

tonight’s visitors Dungannon Swifts travel to Carrick Rangers as History Makers 2018 Dungannon Swifts are BetMcLean League Cup Champions after their triumph over Ballymena United. Two goals from Man of the Match Ryan Mayse and a magnificent strike from Cormac Burke sealed the win as the silverware made its way back up the M1 to sit pride of place at Stangmore Park. After the many celebrations around Dungannon, it was back to league action at the weekend against a Ballinamallard side looking to bring the Stangmore Blues back down to earth with a bang. This wasn’t to be as two second half goals from McElroy and Hegarty sealed a much needed three points for the Swifts in the race for the top six. It was a shaky start for the Swifts as Ballinamallard came out of the blocks, all guns blazing. Saved by the woodwork and some last ditch blocks, the Swifts weathered the Ducks’ early storm to send them back to Ferney Park with nothing. This was a very welcome three points as the Swifts closed the gap on 7th place Ballymena after the Braidmen lost to Crusaders. Tonight's match against the Amber Army won't be an easy one for the Swifts. The saying “but can they do it on a cold Tuesday night at Stoke?” certainly can be used to describe going to the Loughshore Hotel Arena amidst the “Beast from the East” making its way over to Northern Ireland. Dungannon will be hoping they can do it on a cold Tuesday night

in Carrick as they continue to push up the table. Carrick haven’t been in the best of form as they have only managed to pick up one victory in twenty-one games in all competitions but as we all know form counts for nothing in the Northern Ireland Football League. So far this season, it's a home victory a piece for each club - Carrick winning 2 -1 and Dungannon winning 4-0 at Stangmore Park. Carrick will be hoping to replicate their home victory as they look to get out of the relegation playoff position come the end of the season but I’m sure Rodney McAree will be letting his side know about giving up a 1-0 lead in this fixture. Dungannon would like to wish Carrick the very best for the rest of the season. Charlie Calderwood

chester’s chants When I was a lad, quite some time ago now, the FA Cup Final was one of the true highlights of the year. It didn’t matter which two teams made it to Wembley. I’d be glued to the TV from early morning watching the players having breakfast at their hotel, trying to answer the questions on the football themed Question of Sport, laughing at the antics on the “It’s A Knockout" teams bedecked in the colours of the two Cup Final Teams. Excitement mounted as live coverage of the team buses travelling through a sea of supporters. Then the players having a pre-match dander around the pitch to soak in the atmosphere, followed by the game itself and the presentation of the Trophy. Almost a full day. During the week, I was chatting in work about the FA Cup, and none of the four fellas in the group could remember the result from last season's Final. It was only nine months ago! We then had a quick ‘competition: how many results of Cup Finals of the 70’s could each of us recall? We each managed to get at least 8 totally correct (in some cases we knew the scorers too, for a bonus). Then, same question for those since 2010. Nope, not a clue. 24

The romance of the Cup seems slightly less, well, romantic. Games played in front of banks of empty seats, teams fielding under-strength sides in order to concentrate on securing 14th place in the Premier League, destroying at least half of what made Cup Final Day special by moving the semi-finals to Wembley, making the official ball bright pink or deep orange in colour, moving the kick-off time to 5.15 in the evening and ignoring protests from supporters who’d quite like to attend a football match in London without having to stay the night afterwards whilst crowing about meagre increases in television viewing audiences. It’s likely that the FA Cup mattered as much as it did in the past because the final was one of very few matches shown live on the television over the course of any given season. It can’t be just that, though. Maybe we need to refocus on what football means to all involved in it: more about dancing around a halfempty stadium with the lid of a trophy on your head than worrying about the financial and prestige costs of losing a place at the top table for a year or two. It’s a nice thought, but likely fanciful. After all, football is Important these days, and Important Football doesn’t often seem to have too much time for enjoyment.
