SURPLUS SURPLICES (OR COTTAS) FOR CHILDREN

www.wers.org.uk 86 copies of Complete Mission Praise Words Edition are looking for a good home (ideally as a job lot).

Berwick Parish Church has a growing junior section as part of its choir. We are now in the position of having used up all the cottas and surplices we had on stock and are looking for more which are in good condition and would fit 7-15 year olds.

Currently tucked up safely in a slightly dusty box at the Diocesan Office at Church House, North Shields NE29 6HS, the books are in excellent condition and ready to be collected by arrangement.

We would be interested either in purchasing such garments, or removing unwanted ones which are languishing in vestry cupboards. Please contact Christopher or Christine Smith (01289 330735) if you can help.

Great North Festival is a charity committed to celebrating the pioneering achievements of the North East and reviving the creative and innovative spirit of the region.

Frances Ashton Charity Help for serving and retired Church of England clergy and widow(er)s of clergy now deceased. Since 1747 Frances Ashton’s Charity has been helping those who spend their lives serving God and their parish. The Frances Ashton Charity will consider a modest grant for almost any purpose which is causing financial hardship. For example, we could help with: • The cost of a new pair of glasses

It is concerned to work with others to awaken the spiritual and moral wellsprings of our regional life, especially for the benefit of the young.

• A respite care break for a disabled family dependent • The cost of a family holiday • The cost of repairing a broken boiler

We are a group of five; Bob Langley, the former Archdeacon of Lindisfarne, Paul Southgate, the Director of the Vincentians in Partnership, Gordon Morris, a freelance journalist, Liz Robson, a Researcher with Newcastle University, and David Goodacre, a retired priest in the Diocese of Newcastle.

Particular priorities for support include unforeseeable emergencies, medical or care needs for the applicant or their dependents. In some cases, the trustees may be able to help at any point during the year. There are a few exceptions where the Charity is unable to help, for example private education.

GNF ran a series of events in 2013, described on our website: www.greatnorthfestival.com We now publish a quarterly newsletter to spread our ideas – free to subscribers, who subscribe on line – or by writing to [email protected].

For an application form and guidance please contact the Trust Administrator.

If you are a serving or retired member of the clergy of the Church of England or the widow/widower of a member of the clergy who has passed away and you have a hardship, please ask us for an application form and the full guidance notes.

It is an amazing opportunity to gain experience in the exciting and varied world of Christian Media and it is wonderful to see people who take part, going on to use their newly acquired skills to help their studies or give them much needed experience to help them into work. Annual Sponsored Steeplechase (part of the national ‘Ride & Stride’)

The Steeplechase has been held every year since 1980, and has been the largest single contributor to the Trust's funds. Most other county trusts hold similar events, previously called The Bike Ride or similar, but now all are part of the national event called Ride and Stride. For more details of the national event click here. The main aim of the Steeplechase is to visit as many churches as reasonably possible in the day, with participants being sponsored for the number of churches they visit. Other ways of raising money are also acceptable, such as a church being sponsored for the number of visits it receives; or sponsoring younger children for circuits of the church yard. The income from the Steeplechase is shared between the Trust, and individual churches and chapels nominated by the participating Steeplechasers. In 2014 the event raised a total of nearly £8,000, an invaluable contribution to the upkeep of our historic churches.

Roughshod Theatre Company will be in Newcastle with its new show

IrRESISTible

The 2015 Steeplechase will be held on Saturday 12 September. Many of the region's churches and chapels are fascinating and interesting places to visit: in the North East we are blessed with a particularly long and rich Christian heritage. So please come and join the 2015 Steeplechase: as you can see from the photograph the event is open to all age groups and you can use any means of transport - all we ask is that you take care. All the documentation you will need to take part can be downloaded here.

bringing death-defying stories of hope, courage and resistance. IrRESISTible asks 'Would you be brave enough to change the world?' For those with courage, conviction and enthusiasm this may be an irresistible idea, but life presents hurdles that can deter even the most determined.

See IrRESISTible on:

Tuesday, 5th May,7.00pm, St Luke's Church Hall, Claremont Road, Newcastle, NE 2 4AH

As Archdeacons we get to visit many churches and the annual NHCT Steeplechase is a great opportunity for lots of people to share that privilege and pleasure. It's good to have a purpose for your walk or bike ride; this way you can get into great company too, and support the work of the local churches you visit as well as the conservation work of the Trust. Why not get out there in God's good air and discover - or rediscover - some of the places where his people meet to praise him and pray for his world?

Admission: Free Five young actors depict inspiring stories through a mix of bold drama, music and comedy. We meet a life-style guru whose advice goes one step too far, a desperate daughter who takes hold of her destiny and an intrepid bible smuggler who discovers hope in the darkest places. Whilst touring, the company will also be performing and leading drama workshops in community centres, schools, prisons, churches, cathedrals, military bases and many other places which rarely encounter live theatre. For 2015 the company is in partnership with Open Doors, a charity that has served persecuted Christians across the world for the past 60 years.

The show – performed by the band’s founding drummer Ray Laidlaw and guitarist Billy Mitchell – is topping the bill at the first-ever Holy Island Festival from June 25-28.
