ECE 591-01 Wireless Networks and Mobile Computing Project Descriptions Instructor: Honggang Wang ECE Dept, University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth 1. General Description The project is designed for students to undertake projects that address real research and practical problems in the technical areas relevant to the class and students’ particular interests. The project requires a project presentation and report. 2. Project Objective Though the project, each student will be expected to achieve the following goals: (a) Understand the fundamental theory and materials for the topic (b) Review current literature relevant to the project (c) Investigate or develop an application that can realize the technologies studied in your projects. (d) Possible research paper output 3. Project works and form 3.1 Proposal The project topic is determined based on students’ interests and its technical relevance to the class. It is critical to make sure that the topic you choose is an important area of wireless networks and mobile computing. Each group need to write a 1-2 page proposal and submit it to me before Feb 26th . The proposal should clearly describe the project to be undertaken, including Project Members: name all the team members. Project Title: indicate the tentative title of your project report. Project Topics: indicate the topics to be covered. You may select one of the suggested project topics, or you may devise your own comparable project. Work to Be Performed: describe any investigation, development, simulation, or experimentation to be conducted. Expected Results (what do you expect to learn from the project). Relevant Literature: include the literature you find so far for your project, of course, you may add more later if necessary. Proposals will be reviewed and must be approved by the instructor. 3.2 Meeting To ensure the progress and quality of the project you will do, each group should schedule a meeting with me before your proposal is submitted. The meeting should have completed by Feb 22 (Friday). The meeting will help you to finalize the project and expectations for the project.
3.3 Project Presentation See project requirements from teaching website. http://www.faculty.umassd.edu/honggang.wang/teaching2013/spring2013_ECE591.htm
Each group should deliver 30-40 mins presentation. 3.4 Project Report Each group should submit 7-10 page report in the IEEE transaction formation (double column) required format. The available word format is available at : http://www.ieee.org/web/publications/authors/transjnl/#magnetics. It must be submitted in soft-copy by May1st. 4. Time-Line Please plan your project ahead, and do not wait until the last minutes Project proposal due on 6:15 pm on Feb 26th , 2013 Meeting with me for finalizing project topic due on Feb 22, 2013 Mid-term project presentation, April 9, 2013 Final Project presentation, Week of April 22, 2013 Project final report delivery, May 1st, 2013 5. Grading The project grade occupies 60% of your final score in this class. It is important to delivery high quality project report and presentation. The grading is based on the quality of your proposal and technical report as well as your presentation performance. The depth of technical content and writing quality in your report, your presentation and attendance at project presentation are the main criteria to evaluate your project.
6. Potential Project topics Students have academic freedom to choose any topics that are relevant to the class. However, instructor will help students to check the feasibility of the project and make sure the project can be conducted smoothly by students. The topics will be suggested in my class presentation. You can choose one of the listed topics. However, you are welcome to propose a new topic and new idea for your project. Students must submit their proposal by Feb 26. During this process, please let me know if you have any difficulties and concerns.
