TITLE: Teacher Aide, Assistant, Associate Teacher and Teacher RESPONSIBILITY LEVEL: To work with a team of assistants under the supervision of a Head Teacher to carry out a developmentally appropriate program in accordance with Center policies and procedures. RESPONSIBLE TO: Head Teacher and Program Coordinator GENERAL STATEMENT: Responsible for supervising individual and groups of children between the ages of 6 months and five years. The Assistant Teacher is a sensitive, mature individual who is able to relate well to both young children and adults. Responsibilities include but are not be limited to the following duties. SPECIFIC DUTIES AND (PERCENT OF TIME): Classroom Management (80%) • Assist Head Teacher in implementing curriculum • Treat each child with dignity and respect in thought and action • Develop awareness of each child’s individual needs, interests, and personality • Provide observations of primary children • Maintain positive parent-teacher communication Classroom Maintenance (10%) • Assist in maintaining an orderly, attractive learning environment • Assist with daily set-up and clean-up, indoors and outdoors Staff Development (10%) • Discuss teaching style and problem-solving strategies regularly with Head Teacher • Evaluate performance and individual goals throughout the semester • Read articles supplied by the Head Teacher and Program Coordinator • Attend a professional workshop or conference at the Center’s expense • Maintain a neat, appropriate appearance and be prompt for work hours • Maintain confidentiality of all children, parents and staff QUALIFICATIONS: Must be a student at SFSU enrolled in a minimum of 6 units and able to perform the essential functions outlined in the Teacher Handbook. A limited number of five-days per week part-time associate teachers may be hired for continuity of care and/or to meet licensing requirements. Teacher assistant job titles are used for our Wages + grant and match the Child Development Permit: Teacher Aide has 0–5 units in early childhood education/child development and no required experience Teacher Assistant has at least 6 units in early childhood education/child development and no required experience Associate Teacher has 12 units in ECE/CD core courses or CDA Credential and at least 50 days of 3+ hours per day of classroom experience Teacher has 24 ECE/CD units + 16 GE units or AA in ECE and at least 100 days of 3+ hours per day of classroom experience TERM: Part-time employee hired on a semester basis. All part-time employees are eligible for re-hire based on classroom enrollment, job performance, continuity of care, seniority and supervising Head Teacher’s recommendation. The director may re-hire a part-time employee no longer enrolled at SFSU if necessary to maintain NAEYC accreditation.
