From The Rabbi's Desk People often ask me how I make it through the Holidays. This year the entire month of September is consumed- Rosh Hashanah begins on September 3rd and Sukkot finishes September 27th. What's a rabbi to do? As you may recall from my email at the beginning of Elul, the Jewish holidays are a marathon. I too take part in training, warm-ups and stretches to make sure that I am able to get meaning out of the holidays as well as help facilitate meaningful services and experiences for the congregation. You might think that what gets me through the season are spirit-enhanced matzo balls, but in reality here is what I find helps: Get enough sleep! This may seem obvious but being Jewish can be exhausting. There is a lot of standing and sitting in services, a lot of intense concentration, a lot of singing soulfully (hint hint- we need your help singing). If you are able, take a nap when you get home. Allow all the prayers, greeting people, and songs to sink in. Part of my Shabbat and Chag routine is taking a nap after services. I always wake up refreshed and better able to reflect on the day. Talking to friends and family. Believe it or not the whole Jewish world is in a similar boat. I find that it helps to realize that I’m not alone. It helps to call colleagues at other shuls and friends and families to hear how things are going for them. We can share great ideas and commiserate about the exhaustion and remember that we are connected to a network of people around us.

Eating! Again, perhaps obvious. Oftentimes preparation for high holyday eating can be arduous- briskets roasting, chicken soup boiling, apple cake baking, taking time to really enjoy the fruits of your (or someone else’s’) labor. Take time to eat in the sukkah. Eat slowly and savor each bite. You need spiritual fuel for the coming year but you also need physical fuel. This year will be the greatest holidays, services, celebration ever. We are constantly improving, thinking of new ideas, trying new tunes, thinking of ways to engage people. Some of them will work. Some of them won’t. What counts is that we are continuously struggling to improve. Let's give ourselves credit for that. And, God willing, we will have another opportunity next year. I hope that the month of September- from Rosh Hashanah to Simchat Torah- is filled with joy and meaning. May we all be inscribed in the Book of Life.

RABBI H.DAVID WERB MEDITATION GARDEN AND TEMPLE BETH EMUNAH HONORS WALKWAY Would you like to commemorate a special occasion, such as a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, wedding, anniversary, or birthday; or honor or memorialize your loved ones? You can purchase a personalized, laser engraved brick to be placed in the Rabbi H. David Werb Meditation Garden or the Temple Beth Emunah Honors Walkway, both located in the Temple’s Korim Courtyard. The net proceeds go towards the Temple’s Endowment Fund, which helps our Temple and Religious School. Your purchases will keep Temple Beth Emunah strong for many years to come, and also add to the beauty of the garden - an area for reflection, relaxation and enjoyment. Please be sure to visit it when you’re at the Temple. 4” x 8” and 8” x 8” bricks are available, and are permanently laser engraved with your special inscription. Please pick up an order form at the Temple office, or call for more details.
From The President “Have a happy and healthy New Year.” These words just roll off our tongues each and every September as readily as we might say hello to somebody. What does that really mean? Are we really prepared to have at least a healthy New Year? We keep reading in print media or hearing on the television or the radio that Americans are overweight and that the obesity rate is exceptionally high. If this is the case then are we really on the way to a healthy New Year? Of course, if we are not healthy then it's unlikely that we will be happy. I hope that you will join me in trying to put the word “healthy” back into that customary greeting. At the same time, we can all be financially supporting our Temple. How can this be? It's really very simple. We need to think healthy, eat healthy and act healthy. This is something that we can all do together. Starting on Sunday, September 8, 2013 and continuing until Sunday, November 17, 2013, please join me in a group attempt to lose some weight, eat healthier and increase our daily physical activities. For each pound that I lose, I intend to donate the symbolic “chai” or $18 to the Temple with a goal of losing at least 10 pounds. I call upon each and every one of you to pick a dollar amount per pound that is comfortable for you and make the same pledge. As we go to press, we are finalizing arrangements with a personal trainer who is willing to give one or two classes on a Sunday morning on how to properly help ourselves get into better physical shape. We are also trying to arrange a few Sunday mornings for group walking all as a way of helping us achieve our individual goals. There is no magic here. All we need is a little support, a little nutritional information and some old-time willpower. While we will be asking you to sign a pledge sheet signifying that you are participating in the program, there will be no weigh ins, but only the honor system. Better yet, you are free to choose a special diet, an exercise program or any combination thereof to meet your personal needs. The goal is to become healthier in whatever manner that works for you. If you already exercise and appear to be at your optimal weight than perhaps you could pledge a sum of money for each hour that you exercise rather than for each pound you lose. Perhaps, you could match a pledge of someone else who is truly attempting to have a much healthier New Year. Let us all actually mean it, when the words “have a happy and healthy New Year” roll off of our tongues. L’Shana Tova Steve Merlin & Family
SAVE THE DATE HAVE A BREAKFAST ON US (REALLY!) One of the most famous movie quotes is from “Field of Dreams.” That famous line is “build it and they will come.” Around our Temple, we might say feed them and they will come or at least we hope so. Now that we have caught your attention, we, therefore, invite you to have a breakfast on us on Sunday morning, September 29, 2013 starting with Minyan 9 A.M. It is time to focus on both the regionalization events of the last two years and, more importantly, how to implement a positive plan as we move forward especially in light of the failure of the regionalization plan to materialize. It is an important part of this process that everyone be included. Future planning must involve the entire Temple community. Let us start with a Temple wide program wherein we can begin to discuss and visualize the next phase in our Temple's history. There is no specific plan on the table. Rather we must all work together and create a new vision. Please make every effort to join us on Sunday morning, September 29, 2013 starting with the morning Minyan at 9 A.M. when the important issues of the day will be discussed and where your voices may be heard. After all, a new vision needs ideas and ideas can only come from maximum participation. We look forward to seeing you. For planning purposes rsvp to the Temple office by Wednesday, September 25, 2013. L’shana Tova

From the Desk of The Educational Director
There is a Jewish tradition that when a student first learns the alef-bet, a drop of honey is put on the top of the page. The student uses the honey to trace the letters and then, as young children do, tastes the honey on his or her fingers. This actions expresses tangibly the sweetness of Jewish learning and the community’s hope that the student experiences joy in their Jewish education. Similarly, on Rosh Hashanah we eat apples and honey to symbolize our hope for a sweet New Year. It is significant that in both cases of newness and beginning we, as Jews, put an emphasis on the idea of sweetness. Not only do we hope that our lives will be filled with happiness, but also we hope that our lives will be sweet, joyful, and meaningful. We can extend this idea to Jewish learning as well. There is a real hope, as we formalize our Jewish education and continue to grow and learn year after year, that our learning will be enjoyable, engaging and interesting. Thus, the honey not only signifies the sweetness of learning today, but the hope that Jewish learning will continue to remain sweet throughout our lives . As we begin this new partnership between Temple Beth Am and Temple Beth Emunah’s religious schools in our collaborative school, B’Yachad South Area Religious School, may we begin with sweetness and joy. And as our name B’Yachad calls to us, may we join together as a school community to create new and inspired paths to Jewish learning and living. We will have our first formal opportunity to do this as a community on Sunday, September 15, at Temple Beth Emunah, with the B’Yachad opening event! Parents and students will learn about all the exciting things planned for the 2013-2014 school year and also put their own handprint (literally) on the school! Parents and students should plan to attend the event which will be held from 9am-12noon and wear clothes they do not mind getting dirty. In addition, parents of students in grades 2-6 should plan to attend a meeting on Tuesday, September 17 from 4:45-5:45pm at Temple Beth Emunah to learn about the new exciting Hebrew curriculum called Mitkadem. Finally, save the date for the evening of Wednesday, September 18th for a special Sukkot event at Temple Beth Am for all religious school families. I look forward to meeting you all in the near future and having the chance to wish you all a very sweet New Year! Shanah Tovah u’Metukah! Brotherhood News KEEPER OF THE FLAME
Every year, the New England Region Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs honors a member of the Brotherhood from each Temple that is a member of the Federation. Honorees are chosen for long and distinguished service to their Brotherhoods, Temples and communities. The Brotherhood of Temple Beth Emunah takes great pride in the service it does for the Temple and the community. We are proud to announce that this year’s honoree is Stan Marcus. Stan Marcus has been an active member of Temple Beth Emunah for many years. He has participated in almost every facet of temple life. He is a regular weekday Minyan leader and his beautiful voice can be heard many Shabbat mornings, leading us in prayer. Stan has served as Brotherhood President, and was honored with the Brotherhood Man of the Year Award. He has led services for the World Wide Wrap, the Brotherhood Shabbat, and Shabbat Under the Stars. He tutors B’nai Mitzvah students, and has represented Temple Beth Emunah on the Executive Board of the Brockton Interfaith Community. Wednesday mornings you can find Stan preparing food for the evening Bingo games, and during the games you will hear his melodious voice calling out the bingo numbers. In addition to all his temple activities, Stan has a strong sense of community. He is a Jewish Big Brother, a volunteer at MainSpring House, delivers books for the Brockton Public Library, and tutors at the Arnone School for the literacy program. A Marine Corps veteran, who loves to sing, he puts his talent to good use by entertaining the disabled veterans at the Brockton VA. He is also very proud to have earned his black belt in karate at the age of 52. After thirty years working for Social Security, he retired from the federal government, and enjoys spending his leisure time with Dina his lovely wife of 34 years, and his son Michael. Stan’s leadership, commitment, and love of Judaism is an inspiration to all who know him. He is a true example of the word “mench”. We are very pleased that he will be honored as a Keeper of the Flame”. Stan will be honored at a dinner on Sunday, October 27 at Temple Ner Talud in Peabody. Watch mail & October bulletin for details.

SALAD DAZE The cooks from Social Action felt like pioneer women when they arrived at Ronald McDonald House in August. The DPW had shut off water on Kent Street, leaving us dry. Fortunately, with a little imagination and some bottled water, we were able to wash the vegetables and fill one large pot for pasta. By the time we needed quarts of water for the second salad, water returned, earlier than its announced 1 PM time. Good thing we weren’t baking chicken! We prepared a selection of salads and desserts for the guests of RMH. Our menu was Asian chicken salad, Israeli salad, and Rotini salad, full of pineapple chunks, scallions, broccoli, red pepper, and peas. To round off the meal were lemon cookies, cinnamon cookies, and peppermint double frosted brownies. Lest any one feel peckish, there was a selection of muffins. You can help us continue to make life a little easier for the families at RMH by donating any amount to the Temple and writing RMH Dinner Fund on the memo line. You, and your children, can make desserts. We will arrange for pickup. Please contact Tina at

My Brother’s Keeper, in North Easton, serves area families, supplying them with food, furniture, and clothing. At Christmas, My Brother’s Keeper adds a scarf, hat, mittens or gloves to every delivery. We can aid a local charity by donating these items. Social Action is sponsoring this collection that will run all year until November 30, 2013. There is a large green storage box in Hebrew School room one. If you knit, this is the perfect time to create hats, mittens, gloves, and scarves in any size, any color. This site provides a basic hat pattern. www.hjsstudio.com/hat.html For gloves or mittens, www.knittingonthenet.com/patterns/kidsmittens.html This pattern serves both kids and adults.
